Yep. Ed Hardy, Hello Kitty and Yamamoto do make frequent appearances during an average night, but who cares? We're here for the sake. Backlit LCD walls resemble Japanese pagodas in moonlight, while the mocha coloured wooden tables display Japanese diligence. Smart menu, clean surfaces and friendly staffers keeps Granville Street tourists and singles that want to mingle keep coming back.
This review comes after my 6th visit to this fine Japanese restaurant. The Tuna Tartare was excellent as was the Volcano Sushi Roll. The taste and presentation suggests a high end restaurant yet the prices are affordable. The restaurant charges for the tea but the pot is refilled. All-in-all, this isa high recommendation. Excellent Japanese food!
Famished and tired, me and my mum found this place after a quick Trip Advisor search on our phones. So glad we did. We sat outside, right on Granville Street, watching the people go by! The service was excellent and well presented. We had the Farmer "Energy" Bowl which was delicious - highly recommended. We also had some Veggie Rolls,... more
I checked this place out after work. High quality Japanese food beautifully presented. The assorted sashimi was fresh and well presented. The octopus umae was delicious,as was the ankimo(monk fish liver). A must try is the drink god of thunder. The only disappointment was that several items on the menu are no longer available. Great sake selection. This place is... more
Attentive and reliable service makes this a pleasant dine-in location for friends and coworkers. Food arrived quickly which is a must for work lunches and was very fresh and flavourful. Now on my radar for reliable places to eat and bring others.
We enjoyed the food, ambience and service at this restaurant. It's in the middle of the busy city, but is quiet and elegant inside. Very good sushi, sashimi, miso soup, salad, and beverages. Good place to visit while traveling.
Great food and great service. We went for the sushi and were not dissapointed. Deffinitely recommended for sushi. Was busy so if it around 7pm you might want to reserve a table. Was also a bit noisy but we sisnt mind that.
Came without a reservation on Saturday night and they were very accommodating. The service was friendly and efficient throughout being especially welcoming to our children. Highlight: the barbecued ribs were outstanding. Good: popcorn shrimp, tempura, chicken teriyaki, avocado/cucumber roll. Lowlight: Rainbow roll. It just didn't taste all that fresh. But overall a very positive and pleasant... more
We actually ate here twice, because the food here was incredible. The appetizers were a good amount for the money. We had the ebi gyoza which was an unusual presentation - a whole shrimp wrapped in pork and chicken in a dumpling skin. Perfectly cooked. The sushi was very good as well, we ordered nigiri style and also rolls. The... more
Visiting Vancouver (or any big city for that matter) is akin to me taking the Hajj. And for the 96.8% of you in Canada whom are not Muslim, I'll have to explain myself. The Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca done every year by millions as a duty to their faith. And like that righteous journey, I feel compelled to... more
We are finishing our meal now. The food is excellent: so fresh and delicious. Our waiter Jeff made the evening with his excellent service and recommendations. We stumbled into this place and what a great find.
the sushi selections were very nicely prepared, our wait staff very professional and we were seated and served quickly.
Really enjoyed this place. Food was very good and served in a fun way. Relaxed, very casual atmosphere.
I booked this reservation very much in advance. Was called 15 minutes before I arrived, asking if we could leave within 2 hours to make room for another reservation. The food took so long to come, that some of my guests had to cancel their orders. I didn't even get to eat dinner, just had a pitcher of beer before we had to leave
Good food and accommodating. service was a little slow but it allowed more conversation.
Excellent food, great discorery! They have an impresive sake menu!
Delicious Japanese fare with flair. Warm welcome, knowledgable and friendly staff, service was great and the food was tasty , unique and reasonable. Would recommend.
Went to this restaurant at the recommendation of the bellman from our hotel. Excellent service. Had the wild salmon teriyaki - so good and the godfather roll. Casual atmosphere with good food.
Even though we weren't feeling our best (jetlag day 2), we had a good time at Shuraku. We had a friendly waiter, Jeff, who helped us to pick out some nice sushi and nigiri. We will def return here in July.
Excellent service and food. Will go again. I am frustrated with not being able to send this review in easily. It says I am either too long or not long enough in characters. I suggest letting reviews be submitted easier
We went for a late dinner and were greeted immediately. The waiter was excellent and made some recommendations for both food and drinks based on a brief discussion with us.
He didn't let us down, as the food was soooo fresh and tasty with great flavors and the selection of drinks complimented our meal perfectly.
You have to check this place out!
The variety of the food was what I would expect from any other tapa style Japanese restaurant. The service was attentive though, our server never left the teapot empty for too long.Presentation of the food itself was great and quality of the ingredients are definitely there. A more loungey/louder environment though, so if you're looking for a quiet romantic dinner this might not be the best... more
This was the first time I've been to this restaurant in close to 10 years. There were a lot of innovative twist on traditional starters and cooked main courses but the sashimi selection was on the limited size.Food did seem to take a bit long to arrive. We have been to their sister restaurant Zest which is the more formal, fine dining with linen type. It was interesting to see the wide range of... more
Liked the service after we got past the door (the management was a stickler and did NOT open the door until 12:00 PM SHARP.
Food was good as always, and fairly quick to respond considering the lunch rush.
Wonderful find. There are few restaurants on granville and this one fits the bill nicely. Service was quick and we were able to have a leisurely meal before heading to the orpheum almost across the street. The food was wonderful and although we didn't try the saki the list was impressive.
The exact words of my kind waitress. I was welcomed by the maitre d' and he provide me fantastic insights about sake. I tried a plum and oolong tea wine that was extraordinary. I had 'il padrino' roll that is with prosciutto, capres and cream cheese and was great but I fell in love of the Enchanted Forest Roll... that... more
The food is always fresh, hot, and tasty! Service can be spotty at times but generally very good.
We were pleasantly surprised by this sushi restaurant. In a casual atmosphere we really enjoyed the great service and food. At the urging of our waiter we tried raw prawns, a seasonal specialty. The flavour was a subtle sweetness with just a perfect texture. I could have eaten them all night. All the sushi was delicious and we'll presented. I... more
I always order the stone curry bowl with either pork cutlet or chicken karage, which is usually good. However, my last experience was not so pleasing that the chicken was not fresh, with a stinky taste. I have asked my friend to try a piece, and he confirmed that the chicken meat has turned bad. I asked the server, who asked the manager to report the bad chicken. He took it back and gave me the... more
Delicious, fresh sushi and greens! Unfortunately server got a dish wrong and actually came out to "discuss". Luckily another server made sure it was corrected and finished off the service with us. Have been here before so knew it was not an ongoing problem. Sitting on the patio can get a little noisy and feels a little close to the pedestrians going by but the inside is lovely and quiet. Will... more
What a great find! Both the food and the service was wonderful. Many items to choose from.
I have walked past Shuraku so many times, and finally I had the chance to eat! The food was stunningly flavourful, amazing Black Cod!
A reall good option in japonese food in central Vancouver. The service is fantastic and the prices are adequate.
The food was great, the service was excellent, and it was few blocks from our hotel. If we ever go to Vancouver again we will have a dinner there again
An excellent place to stop for sushi before hitting the theater. This place has become a favorite hang out for our group of four - the food is always fresh, service friendly and knowledgeable. Very responsive if they know you have another engagement and will tailor their speed of service to your needs. Love the energy as they greet a group coming in or going out - does not seemed forced but... more
We shared some tuna and salmon sashimi at this restaurant today and both of us were sick immediately after. While the servers were friendly, poorly handled raw fish is inexcusable. AVOID
Tried Shuraku without any knowledge of it. Food arrived quickly and was delicious. The ambience wasn't to the same level - needed dimmer lighting and more professional serving staff. A great meal though and would recommend to any sushi lover.
We arrived at 5 PM which was much earlier than their usual evening rush. However they have an outdoor patio and several people were seated there. All the staff greeted us and said goodbye. We ordered the black cod at $13 which wasn't to our taste and a teriyaki chicken donburi which was delicious. Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I keep going back there as I usually... more
This place was lovely! Right downtown near all the night spots and open late on the weekends it was perfect for a few friends to grab great sushi before a night out. We found other spots nearby that we're a little easier on the wallet but if you are not on as tight of a buget as I am then... more
The staff was so accommodating and found some wonderful GF/Vegan options for us - YUM! I highly recommend getting the tofu and avocado salad then paying an extra dollar to sub more ago for the tofu ;)
Went there for the first time due to a recommendation with my dinner companion. Very pleasant atmosphere and service, though the service was a little slow in the beginning. The food is good and reasonable priced, I'd personally would give it 4 out of 5 stars and would come back.
Don't expect much if you're going to this restaurant. Food and service, really just okay only. I wouldn't wanna go again.
Food is always freshly made, tasty, and hot! Love the lunch options, variety, and reasonable prices. Definitely one of my favourite dining spots!
Within easy walking distance of my hotel, Shuraku proved to be a great choice. I made a reservation online (for a Wednesday lunch time) which was a good idea as the place soon filled up. The fish was fresh and tasty and as noted by others, the right temperature. I enjoyed the hot sake flight which came with detailed information... more
I went one evening, and loved it so much that I returned for a snack the next day.
Service was exceptional - polite, timely, courteous. I asked questions about the menu and received clear answers and great recommendations.
I had the Tuna Tartar and the Rainbow Roll. Both were very fresh, vibrant and delicious. It's hard to find a flaw...

Reasonably priced and very good sushi, good service, lots of locals, very fresh big eye tuna was a hit
We had never eaten sushi before and sought advice from the concierge at our hotel. He recommended this place. It's lively, full of Japanese, and clearly authentic. We took advice from the waitress about what to eat. Ate excellent fish, good Japanese beer and had a very interesting meal. Excellent for Sushi virgins!
We found Shuraku on Tripadvisor, desperate for somewhere to eat with the kids that wasn't Maccas or Subways. This is not somewhere you would take kids unless you had to, but we had to and the staff treated them great. We really appreciated the prompt, efficient and pleasant service by Shuraku's waitstaff. Our waitress didn't forget a thing, even when... more
I have gone to this restaurant for 4 years now. Food is great. I was very disappointed that I reserved a booth 2 weeks in advance for 2 people and then they call me a day before to tell me it's been taken. Seemed to be they were more concerned about getting 4 people in a booth of more money potential then for the customer service of 2 people. I eventually was given the booth at the last minute... more
Probably a better sushi restuarant than many. Excellent selection of food. Good service and good selection of sakes.
I grew up on Japanese food. Whether I tried to or not, I was exposed to many variations of both home cooked, and restaurant type of Japanese cuisine in Canada, and in Japan.
In Vancouver, you have the option of the funkier kind of Japanese food like the Guu restaurants (my all time favourite place to eat in Vancouver), or...

My daughter and I went here after making a reservation on Open Table and we weren't disappointed. I enjoyed the sake and the sushi we had was very fresh and delicious. This place is a welcome surprise. Located on what used to be a seedy part of Granville near Robson, this restaurant serves really good Japanese food in a very competitive market. Very fresh fish, nice sized cuts of sushi and sashimi. Lots of items on the well priced menu. Some unusual choices like mussels and taro chips. Tempura batter is... more
We visited for dinner and ended up in a box for four in the back part of the restaurant. Refreshingly no TV was visible from our spot.
Sushi as well as all the meat and fish dishes we had were outstanding; very fresh and tasty. Especially recommend the beef and asparagus as well as the volcano roll.
Nice side note...

We arrived at the sushi place at around 9-ish, almost 10pm and we were still able to order most of the sushi that we want. Good overall quality and prices are decent.
Happened upon the ShuRaku while looking for a Japanese lunch location - Good Karma! A wide variety of choices all reasonably priced. I enjoyed the Stone Curry bowl with a Miso starter and vegetable salad. My partner had a Donburi with noodle salad. Our neighbors sushi was well displayed and their combination more than adequate for a midday meal. The... more
ok. the shuraku gozen lunch special ($17) totally ups my rating a full star. best japanese set lunch in town. better value than miku ($27) and better quality AND value than oru ($29). must try.
The restaurant is in an unremarkable narrow space on Granville Street near Robson, with comfortable booth or bar seating. The staff is extremely efficient and professional, and the extensive menu is loaded with tempting choices.
I opted for the Gozen lunch for $17.50, the most elaborate and expensive of several lunch-box offerings with components that change daily. Mine consisted of...

The ShuRaku on 833 Granville is certainly one of the very best Japanese restaurants in town. Most of the staff is Japanese and you'll get the real typical Japanese experience.
The menu offers many choices, especially sushi, sashimi, tempura and different grilled foods like spare ribs in Teriyaki sauce.
The quality of fish is really first grade !

We have lived and visit Japan frequently and always miss Japanese food that isn't just the sushi bars found abroad. This was perfect! We went here on Xmas day because it was one of the few places that were open (we were visiting from away and love sushi, so it was perfect). The spicy tuna was amazing. The server was hilarious and made us feel very welcome. I would definitely go back.
At the suggestion of our hotel, we dined at Shuraku. Wow ! A sashimi platter to remember, and outstanding sushi also. The place is run with true Japanese hospitality (even though the decor is 99pct western). It was so good we came back two days later for lunch (sashimi again).
Located on Granville, just off Robson ... Quite convenient, but...

The sushi was delicious! Their sake menu is rather extensive which is great if you know about sake. But if you just want some house sake at a reasonable price they don't have it and if they do have reasonable priced sake its buried in the menu. I don't know what the fuss is about with this place. It's on a dodgy block of Granville, the patio offers an intimate relationship with the Translink trolley bus, an overflowing waste bin and some fairly colourful neighbours.

My wife and I ate Japanese food in Japan for two and a half years while working there, and Shuraku comes closest to its Japanese counterparts in quality, service, and atmosphere. For good down home food on Granville, I suggest dining at Shurake Sake Bar & Bistro. The service is great with the authentic Japanese customs and courtesies.
Go with miso soup, wild mushroom salad, kogomi, avocado rolls, mushroom ohitash, live spot prawns, kuro macha, genmaicha, ebi gyoza, tuna isobe ago and salmon teryaki - all balance between veggies and proteins.
Tried Shuraku for lunch a few times mostly because a friend and colleague really likes this place. I think the location is great and the restaurant is nicely decorated, unfortunately, the food is kind of average and not great. I'm sure that I'll be back but not because I pick the place, hppefully I'll be more impressed next time.
This centrally located japanese restaurant serves up great sushi and their sake list is quite extensive, featuring bottles/glasses in all price ranges. We've eaten there three times now and have always been impressed with the sushi. We haven't tried much in the way of other traditional japanese fare, only the ebi gyoza, which quite frankly was a bit boring and... more

This restaurant is situated directly on Granville Street in the heart of Downtown Vancouver. It is relative hidden among other bars and restaurants close to Robson Street. The food was wonderful. Our only complaint is that we ordered several dishes assuming they would bring them over a period of time. Everything came almost at once. I don't know if this is usual in this type of restaurant. I would suggest ordering only a dish or so at a time to avoid this.
