Hmmmm smokeee meet !! best smoke meet in montreal, ideal for lunch .. and to loose weight :P
You cannot come to Montreal and NOT eat here. It would be just wrong. :)
Any time I'm in Montreal, Schwartz's is a must stop. Love the massive smoked meat sandwiches! If your visiting Montreal, do yourself a favor and stop in.
I'm drooling as I write this review. This place has the best montreal smoked meat I've ever had. Piping hot stack of smoked meat on thin rye and wonderfully well spiced. There's enough meat for 3 or 4 sandwiches in my opinion. Worth the effort to visit here when you're in Montreal.
Ok, so this spot is a real hole in the wall---but IT IS a Montreal landmark & YES, THEY ARE renowned for their famous smoked meat.
Lengend has it that Schwartz was the establishment that inspired the "Soup Nazi" on the sitcom, Seinfeld.
Perhaps Jerry was inspired by a trip to Schwarts while he was in MTL for the Just For Laughs festival---
Why would Schwartz have been an inspiration, you ask?
Once you`ve visited Schwarts & experienced service where the waiter may actually slap your hand if you attempt to pour your own soda from the can into your glass---you`ll understand why.
It`s a bit of a strange concept (treat me like dirt because I`m dying for your smoked meat)---but I suppose it`s all in good fun.
This is a great little place on St-Lawrence. For the decor, they kept their classic look over the years. On the walls there are all the pictures from all the celebrities who have been there.
The food is great and the service is very fast!

Every day of the week there was lines out the door I recommend if traveling and you want to stop and go during a weekday as soon as it opens don't wait. The shorts can also be found in the local grocery stores hint hint chopped a version or slices.
After visiting a couple of Montreal delis, I have to say that Schwartz's is the best one and is the quintessential place for a smoked meat sandwich in Montreal.
Yes there is an unfriendly lady managing the pay counter but the sandwiches, the meat quality and speed of service for what you pay are pretty on point.

Schwartz's is a smoked meat deli in Montreal. They are famous for their hot smoked meat sandwich and smoked meat by the pound, which has been compared to pastrami in NY.
There were two lines for Schwartz's. One for take out and one for sit in to dine. We opted for the take out, since that line was much shorter (and involved an indoor wait).
We ordered 1.5 pounds of the smoked meat and one...

Visiting from Toronto and waited in line but it was worth the wait. Best smoked meat sandwich I've ever had! first time but will be back someday soon! Service was fast and efficient and they regularly keep people in line updated/informed on time to wait, open tables, etc. great spot!
Most famous deli meat sandwich place in Montreal.
The meat is so juicy and made with just enough spices so it's not too much and not too salty. It is served so well with pickles ! Must go and try at least once -- but I'll tell you now, you will fall in love with it!
The star of the show here is the spiced and brined beef brisket, hot-smoked and steamed, yielding something similar to corned beef or pastrami but taking it a step further. Jews from Eastern European introduced the smoked meat sandwich to Montreal nearly a century ago, and one of the main vendors of this specialty is the legendary Schwartz's Deli.

Assuming you like smoked meat, you will like Schwartz's. It's delicious and getting a plate and splitting it is perfect. I don't think it's overhyped as in it's not that good, but it is maybe over hyped in that there are other restaurants that will provide similarly delicious smoked meat.

So I went back again. And this time I went into the dine in as opposed to the take out section.
The sandwich was much better this time and they used a different kind of bread. Also not as dry as the previous one I had from the take out section.
They do, however take cash only. There is an atm in the shopper's next door which has a desjardin atm. The service is great as always.

Smoked meat sandwich - no smoky flavor but the mountain of meat was so soft and warm. Good mix of lean, fat and peppery crust. Top with mustard for more flavor.
We were in line for like 20 mins or so. So many people were waiting when we got inside. We ordered No.4, which basically it was a smoke meet sandwich with mustard sauce, and a poutine.
Smoke meat was really nice with awesome flavor. Poutine was also great with thick gravy and cheese.
This place is totally worth a try!
You have to stop in, right? This Jewish Deli is a mainstay in Montreal. They've been serving up their smoked seasoned meats for decades. Celine Dion even bought the place a while back to keep it going (so we heard). The #4 is what you want if you're a first timer. It's served on rye with mustard. This is a must eat in Montreal! If you like Kat'z in New York, then you will also like this. I actually prefer this over Kat'z. The meat is fattier and much tastier in my opinion. Don't bother line up for the restaurant unless you are dying to sit down. Next door does take away sandwiches, and it MUCH quicker.
Look for the steamed-up windows! This is one of those Montreal legends, but it's so small we nearly walked right by it. And when the waiter asks if you want regular or fatty smoked meat, of course say fatty. Or is it 'lean' vs. 'regular'? At any rate, get the fattier end of the brisket--why not? You're on vacation. (Smoked meat is the name of the game here--like pastrami, but so much better!)
Schwartz's smoked meat are to die for. The flavors are wonderful and the texture is awesome. The 'sandwiches' are really just a huge stack of these lovely smoked meat in between two little slices of rye bread. This place has to be experienced to really appreciate the hustle bustle of this classic deli. It's a bit of a greasy spoon and a sure throwback to 50's, and a not to miss Montreal dining experience!
Favorite Dish: Though the sandwiches are quite small compared to NYC deli's, the prices are about half, so bite right into one of their absolutely packed smoked meat sandwiches, and wash it down...

The line can be horrendous on weekends, the service is impersonal at best, and you are likely to be shoehorned into a table with a gaggle of total strangers. That said, the classic meal of a smoked meat sandwich,... more
