Delicious Japanese tapas and hot sake.

I don't eat sushi but I do enjoy Japanese tapas. First time trying anything like this and I love the concept of sampling many dishes and sharing with friends.

Modern environment, not too busy and very affordable for the amount of food. I'm definitely coming again. Udon is particularly good, broth is very tasty.

Great Japanese Tapis!!!!!!

The sushi was very good! especially the fresh "UNI"
Oysters from the East Coast on Friday's are a treat!
The service was good and food was very tasty!
However this was definitly not like the neon stools in the photos. Very quiet and calm atmosphere.
Nice for a quick pint and bite with a friend's company!
Will go back next time I'm in the mood for a treat!

Great food and great service!

My wife and I had never been to an Izakaya. The food was delicious and the owner was very friendly and gave us a lot of her time! The sauce in the spicy salmon roll was SOOO good! She told me most restaurants use honey but they do not. Unfortunately she did not divulge the secret recipe. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants some great food, a drink, and a friendly environment!

Great Toronto Izakaya

Fun Japanese restaurant with great atmosphere on Church street! Really enjoyed the takoyaki and love the fact you can order Japanese izakaya food and Japanese sushi as well. Would recommend it to anyone who's feeling like Japanese food.

A real taste of Modern Japan

My lunch there was delightful as the decor was very modern and cozy at the same time. There food was delicious as the small plates gave us the opportunity to try a variety of japanese food at a reasonable price! The sake was just right as some restaurants serve warm/hot sake cold!

More than sushi, it's Japanese tapas.

First time trying izakaya or Japanese tapas; everything we ordered was delicious especially the hot sake. Perfect for a cold day and the best complement for sashimi.

You do have to order more than a few dishes tough as each plate only has about 4-6 pieces (or one per person).

Better than Guu.

Why is Kokoni Izakaya better than the other downtown Toronto Japanese Izakaya restaurant?
1. No line-ups or long waits
2. Slightly cheaper izakaya/appetizers
3. Slightly cheaper drinks and INCREDIBLE selection of sake
4. Larger portions! You will be full without having to spend $30+
5. Modern, lounge atmosphere

I love Guu, but I cannot deal with the long lines, small portions and noise.

Kokoni Izakaya is the latest Toronto restaurant to jump on the popular Izakaya trend offering a variety of small, tapas-style specialty dishes that go well with beer and cocktails. Found in the heart of the Village, this restaurant serves lunch and dinner but also transforms into a dance club late in the evening.Open for about a month now, Kokoni Izakaya is run by a former instructor from the... more

This was pleasant enuf, but I found the menu quite limited in variety. Prices were good. The sushi was amply portioned, but kept falling apart. The fish was very fresh. The music! Holy moly! Started with light piano jazz, kept getting louder, then turned to blaring disco. Decor is nice & subdued. Service was impeccable. I'll go back if I'm craving sushi, as Tuesday is $1/piece.

What a great addition to the area this place is!  Finally some good food in Church-Wellesley. I finally got a chance to visit this place with my partner, and we loved it!  The menu is a mix of all kinds of foods.  The Chicken Teriyaki Dinner came with the chicken on a bed of veggies, along with salad, and rice for $14.  It was big!  We ordered a Dynamite Roll as well, and it was both delicious... more

I was ready for my solo Izakaya experience at Kokoni Izakaya... so I can sip on some hot sake or sake cocktail while munching on some Japanese tapas style snacks...just like all those Japanese men does getting drunk like silly... But when I saw the Tuesday Specials: SUSHI for $1 each!! I just could not resist Specials... and specials for sushi.. I am IN!! Almost all the sushi are $1, except... more

I tried this place last night with my family. There was a total of 6 of us and i had been in line at Guu south of KOKONI for 1hr. It started raining and my grandmother was with us, so i decided to walk on over to this place.Environment: the restaurant was completely empty. During the duration of out stay there only 2 tables had filled up. (Saturday night, 7-930 ish)The restaurant was clean and... more

it's not guu. but it's still pretty good. great service, tho the restaurant was pretty empty when we ate (~ 6-7pm) .. so no waiting, but also a bit too quiet. food was good, nothing spectacular. And the menu had less variety than guu. like the previous yelper mentioned, there was complementary salad and soup. i think this place stands on its own as a japanese restaurant, but i just have higher... more

If I had KNOWN that this would be my last stop for dinner this Wednesday night, I would have ordered a few more items here.  Right beside Chino Locos we went inside and was totally awed by the setting which was how Izakaya should be.  The Lantern/Sake Bottle shrine right at the entrance is very representative of an IZAKAYA and others should take note but understanding it's downtown most other... more
