If you're going to art school or just want something to help with a hobby, this is a good store that will have everything you need at a fair price. Not cheap, but fair.
This store is stocked with the professional artist in mind. Lots of unique items to inspire you here, all at a good price, and they can order things in. Not an art supply store for getting crayons for your kids.
There aren't a lot of art supply stores I can think of in Calgary, but this is one I remember for sure. They have a lot of materials here, likely what you're looking for, and they can order stuff if you need something unique. Knowledgeable staff make a big difference too.
Great art store for any ACAD student! They offer 10% off with student ID. Great selection when I can't find what I'm looking for at the ACAD bookstore, just a bit more pricey. The service is excellent! Everyone is super friendly, helpful, and answers any questions I have. Great selection of pretty much everything! Paints, sketch books, markers, pencils, pens, and papers!
Although I enjoy Art, I'm not really an Artist (unless you call OCD-fueled review writing to be a craft). However, I love wandering through Art Supply stored and my recent stroll through the Kensington area did not disappoint. I ended up with a cool all-weather pen, a few odds and ends, and only left behind a few temptations around sketch books and journals. The good folks here were nice and it... more
I'm not much of an artist. The most I could ever draw was an epic forest for my art class which was h@!%!**#~d drawn the night before. I ended up taking the most expensive sheet of paper in our class and taking my drawing pencil and paper shader and mushing out the crappiest (but eerie) group of trees. My art teacher, who was also my volleyball coach, decided to let his only left handed spiker... more
Well stocked, well organized, well staffed. I was finishing a painting for my mom for Christmas and needed a few supplies to complete it. So I popped into Kensington Art Supply.
All I needed was a few brushes and some acrylic paint. It was super easy to find, but even while I was standing there, one of the employees stopped by to see if I needed any help. I hadn't been in the store for more...

All I have to say is that I will drive an hour to get my supplies from this place, including custom canvas frames and quality paint. The staff is very friendly and have gone out of their way to fill my orders. If you need professional quality supplies, Kensington should be your destination.
What a great store. The staff is super friendly and helpful, both over the phone and in person. The move to their new (well, as of January 2011) next door location was a good decision, as the store looks much cleaner and brighter, making it a more pleasurable shopping experience. They deserve a good space. I am by no means a crazy, high needs craftswoman, but I've always found what I'm looking... more
So my lady got it in her head that she was the next Picasso or Pollock.
This was after shopping around for art which we both found to be way too expensive for "just a bunch of colourful shapes and lines".
Hence the "I can do better than that" attitude, so off we went to the Kensington Art Supply, which was recommended by a friend.
Now, granted, it's pretty intimidating walking into a real art...

This store reminds me of a tiny version of Curry's Artists' Materials on Queen St. West in Toronto.
They carry everything you would need for that masterpiece you've been working on, and then some. All types of paints, all types of brushes, and all types of paper and canvases.
I LOVE the fact that this place is easy to get to. Whether you're walking from downtown, or taking the train (get off...

The customer service here is really, really good. There were two women working there last time I went and they helped me find exactly what I needed, plus they were friendly.
I hadn't known about the student discount and the cashier made a point of asking if I was a student, which I thought was nice. The discount is 10%.
Everything is well organized and they seem to have a wide selection.
This location is 10 times smaller than Mona Lisa but you know what they say good things come in small packages.
The store is organised very well, everything is easy to see and they seem like they have all areas covered. There is even a back space where they carry a selection of paper and canvas sizes.
But the most impressive thing beside their good quality stock for me is their customer...

I really love little art spaces like this one. Kensington Art Supply recognizes their main audience pretty well - the ACAD students up the hill. So they offer a pretty good student discount, and have all the things a student might need.
The staff know their stuff, and they are always helpful and never snotty. I appreciate that in an art store. They have a good selection of brushes, oils,...

It's not a big place, but they definitely have a good selection of water colours, oil colours and oil pastels, brushes and sketch books.
They also have this tie-dye kit so you can get that authentic hippy look. The guys were just young working there, but they seem to know their stuff and were quite friendly. I'll be back....
