My husband and I decided to get away for awhile and took a 4 day holiday in our own city. We stayed at The Macdonald Hotel. I never felt so welcomed at a hotel before. The food was excellent and the employees so attentive. We will be doing this again.
From the outside, with its limestone facade and gargoyles, the Mac looks like a feudal château -- it's no wonder that this is where Queen Elizabeth II stays when she's in town. Originally opened in 1915, the restored Hotel Macdonald has retained signature elements such as its deep tubs, brass door plates, and paneled doors. Everything, including the service, is absolutely top-notch -- including... more
Fairmont's MAC Scone with Whipped Cream and Berry Compote at Taste of Edmonton this year would be my 2nd favourite in this event! The dish was presented well and very tasty. If I have to nitpick on this dish though, I would have wished that the scone was a bit softer. Other that that, a very good dish!!!
The nice thing with big brand hotels is you know what you're going to get.
This Fairmont is in a stunning building that's celebrating its 100 year anniversary right now - it's all dark wood and high ceilings and super impressive. They currently have a giant lego model of the hotel in the middle of the lobby, too! So cool!
The staff were polite and courteous, and my room was lovely. Obviously...

The Fairmont Hotel MacDonald is completely gorgeous old-school class, and after 100 years, they very well pull it off to perfection. Not your kind of luxury, Jay-Z - think Queen of England (who I've heard has stayed here on occasion (unconfirmed). It's the kind of luxury where everyone calls you sir or madame, and everyone working here is named Jeeves. (also unconfirmed.)
That said, when I...

Always a lovely experience. Whether I'm just popping in for an event, or dining at one of their three dining establishments, or staying for a night or two, I always leave thinking "I've got to come back here more often!" They really do set the bar really high and very few other business can touch it. One might feel intimidated by the fact that it's upscale, but I'd urge you to look a little... more
Great hospitality and service in a luxiourious setting.
Fairmont is a chain. But it has excellent standards and frankly always lives up to its good name. Every fairmont has its history. This location does too. As a yelper we got a nice tour of the hotel, a aquasize class and a garden party.
Try to drive in by crossing the river valley from the south side and going up north on grierson hill....

Every event or experience I have ever had at this particular hotel has been marvelous. The staff here take their jobs very seriously. I've been really impressed by the care and effort they put into their jobs. I've attended social activities, booked events, and toured through this hotel over the years. I even like the staircases as the windows have such excellent views.

I went to the Fairmont Hotel "Pool Party" with the yelp fit club. The facility was super nice with complimentary towels, toiletries, coffee, tea and water. We did an aquasize class - which although it wasn't up to my usual level of intensity when working out- it was still super fun. The instructor they brought in (Sue) was so funny. I had stayed at the fairmont once a few years ago and I... more
Great event last night at the Hotel MacDonald. The aqua size class was hilarious put on by a very energetic lady. The tour of the hotel was amazing and it was really cool to hear all the stories of the celebrities that have stayed there.
This Magnificent piece of Edmonton's history is a must see location in town. If you ever have a chance to tour it and find out about its history being 100 years old this year, it will blow your mind how much this building has been through.
It was remodeled in the 80s and many parts of it are protected for their historical value. A great venue for an upscale wedding or other classy event.

Is there a nicer balcony to view the manicured gardens and the view across the north Saskatchewan river? Just a step outside onto the patio of the splendid Lounge? Do the bartenders not make delicious drinks, and the servers give attentive service? Isn't the ambience in the lounge and throughout the building elegant, tasteful but comfortable? And isn't the food fairly divine. This was and is... more
This hotel is certainly one of the more regal and prestigious hotels in town with history and views of Edmonton that many love.
Many of the banquet halls are certainly dated, which is part of the charm I suppose. My review will be limited mostly to my food experience over the years.

If it's good enough for Her Majesty the Queen, then it's good enough for lil' ol' Fairy.
I didn't get to stay in the Queen's suite, but my corner room digs overlooking the snow-covered North Saskatchewan River Valley - the largest urban parkway in North America - was just as magical. Okay, not magical, but the room offered old world luxury, plenty of space, delicious Le Babo bath products,...

The Mac is definitely beautiful. As we pulled up to it for the gala dinner were going to it was quite the structure to see. It had been a year or so since I had been in there.
Elegantly set overlooking the river valley it is a sight to see.
The gala was set in a beautiful ballroom which required very little dressing, actually none. I believe they only put up some lights.

We had our lunch here with office mates and tried their signature dishes, food was great but the view is better! Kinda pricy but worth it. The Staff and Hotel Got you in the Christmas Spirit!
I was the project manager on a similar hotel [ renovation. $ 15 mill ] in Winnipeg -- the Fort Garry Hotel - built in 1911,,, the macdonald hotel is clean, the rooms and public areas are not neglected, the ballrooms are more than acceptable for public lunches and social events,, there is no lack of maintenance and upkeep,, there is no ventilation noise in the bedroom at night,, I had a good... more
Work ended up selecting this hotel due to its close location to the Shaw Centre. It has a great downtown location. The staff was great. Love the beautiful yellow lab that greets you at the door. My only issue is the entrance/exit. I had to drive around in circles trying to figure out how to get into it!!
I like the hotel, sure it's a little more pricey than most hotels in edmonton, but it's worth it. I love the pool, hot tub, steam room, sauna. We go every morning. Everyone says hello to you and are super friendly. I like to stay for going to events in the city like the CFR, as the LRT is such a short walk to get to.
GREAT ! Staff were very friendly and helpful . Food was delicious.
Good job good staff, restaurant was nice. I enjoyed the details of the furniture and like the look of the hotel.
This hotel is very impressive on the outside, but looking in deeper it was not that great. Yes, the beautiful architecture, and indoor decor was exquisite. It was worth seeing and taking photos of, but my room was not so great. The bathroom was not very clean. There was hair around the bathtub and the bathroom drinking glass had a large dirty streak running down it. The bathtub was old, and the... more
A lovely, luxurious place to stay. We just visited overnight from out-of-town, so we could attend David Suzuki's Blue Dot Tour at the Winspear, and thought we would make our stay special by staying at the Hotel MacDonald. They upgraded my room to one with a view. Great! However, my room had a dead fly on the middle of the bed and then had 2 other flies flying around. I wanted to change rooms but was too tired to do so as I was only there one night. In the end, the flies did not bother me. It was strange to see, though since it is a posh hotel. It was unexpected.
For the price you pay, you would expect WiFi to be free. Had fruit flies flying around my food in the conventional lounge.
Staff and hotel make you feel like you are on a European holiday. Room was clean and very nicely appointed.
Absolutely awful, you pay through the nose for everything. Especially for the little things like the wifi; it's an extra 16 $ a night for something the would come free at something simple as the holiday in ! Than something as little as a bottle of water is nearly 10 $ only decent thing about this hotel is the the workout room and pool. Bathroom is so tiny I could barely fit inside when when... more
Overpriced everything, the shower was a joke, the restaurant wasn't even an option. Get a normal hotel room and give the rest to charity
made to feel right at home; consistent professional service
Lovely hotel. Lots of character! Perfect location
Really enjoyed hanging out in the lounge. I expected to find free wifi in the room in this day and age without having to sign up to membership deals. Also breakfast buffet closed at 10am was a bit early. A roaring duct on building opposite meant we had to keep the openable windows closed.
Enjoyed my stay here very much. The McDonald hits all the high notes. From sitting outside on the lovely terrace to dining in your room, the hotel takes good care of you. The staff are very professional and responsive to your needs.I might like to see more vegetarian dishes on the menu and the sheets could be replaced, soon.
I got married here in a small and intimate wedding. Beautiful place and friendly staff. The Sunday brunch is probably one of the best I've ever experienced in all of my hotel escapades throughout the world. It's a delight from the free flowing mimosas and decadent spread. Absolutely must try for all.
Gave us free drinks and other goodies as we waited for our room. Fromt desk is somewhat thinly staffe but staff is very helpful and excellent. Staff in restaurant recognized my name as a result of emails exchanged and were very courteous. Good to great service in retaurant, though service in bar and at the patio can be slow. Same staff have been there for a few years.
We had a wonderful experience just our check in was questionable.....arrived at 7;20 pm, were told we had no room assighned to us and may have to go to another hotel.....needless to say that was not what we wanted to hear after a little bit of negative feed back from us about this they did find us a room and all was well...... more

You get what you pay for. This was a fancy hotel, great service, rooms were alright, very clean & quiet. However, it's the Fairmont and be prepared to pay more. Great hotel.
Hotel staff very nice and helpful. Lovely garden and patio. Breakfast was expensive but not many options so for the most part A good stay
First time un Edmonton? You will enjoy this place, and thème the city area.
No hotel chain treats their customers better, from my experience. Always worth the money, always comfortable, never any discrepancies. Easy.
good. the fan blew directly on to the beds so had to be turned off.
Incredible food. Scallops tasted like candy they were cooked perfectly. The sable fish was exceptional as well. Great service... Beautiful patio to sit outside and look out over the river valley.
What more could you want?
I arrived after a long 8 hour drive to find out the Deluxe River View room I book was not available. Was given a base room with no view. Room is small and has seen better days. Overall I will suggest this place for anyone on a romantic gateway. Only that after booking I realised that the spa and swimming area was... more
We had a wonderful view of the River. We found our buffet breakfast to be a little pricey for what they had to offer. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Reserved 2 Queens got 1 King. No swimming pool or exercise rooms - down for renovations - but no discount. Not even complimentary coffee in the lobby. Buffet breakfast approx $30.00 was at least 3 hours old - just semi-warm, and never saw anyone adding anything new to it. Furniture in the main lobby really awful. Gammalt badrum med mögelspår i hörnen. Under skåp och sängar låg det lager av damm kvar. Gamla kaffefläckar på fönsterbrädorna. Lite snålt också av ägarna att ta betalt för flaskvatten och parkering. The hotel room we first got wasn't cleaned when we checked in, but the hotel did upgrade us to a room with a view and a plate of chocolate covered strawberries. They took care of us and followed up on our satisfaction of the new room. Overall was very impressed and the brunch is to dye for.
Couldn`t fault it. The Fairmount chain has now taken over from The Doubletree chain as our hotel of choice.
We stayed over night after our wedding, room was nice and clean. The food was absolutely awful.
Supernice service and location. Amazing restaurant and lounge.
Service at dinner on the patio was not good. Service at breakfast was great. Food was very good and the view on the patio is awesome. The cost for self parking is high.
Great location, it was quiet and the restaurant had delicious food, servers were great! It was nice neat hotel to stay in. You can easily walk downtown. Pretty river valley view.
Lovely three nights after working out how to use the tv and coffee machine and found the fridge that I thought was a safe! $15 for wifi is a little strange for a not cheap hotel
Too expensive for this tired hotel!
Enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone. We enjoyed our anniversary in the Harvest Room.
I booked this hotel for my tenth anniversary with my wife this past weekend. I really enjoyed it! My wife loved the bed, as she was finally able to sleep... Hot Sunny afternoon, patio, BBQ right there (great food Chef Megan and her friendly smile) with drinks. My early Fathers days gift was perfect!
In for a weekend for a trade show. Centrally situated in downtown core, good staff, decent views from room. Overall good spot to stay when in Edmonton.
We really enjoyed our stay. We had a great room with a great view. The room was quiet and peaceful. It was a wonderful experience. Just what we needed!
I just loved staying at the *Mac* service- rooms- staff-- excellent---the charm of a beautiful building and history in Edmonton--I was so sorry that I missed the Hotel Dog I think having the dog is such a lovely idea for guests who are missing their own pets. I also enjoyed my Alberta steaks the food was great. A truly relaxing stay.
Yet another fabulous Fairmont property. The Hotel MacDonald is conveniently located and sits above the beautiful river valley. The room was quiet and comfortable. My colleagues and I enjoyed a wonderful meal and delicious cocktails in the Confederation Lounge where the service was excellent.
This downtown skyline view is astonishing. Decor elegant, and room a fair size. I had a blast my whole night and would definitely recommend to my friend's or come back again myself. Thank you Hotel MacDonald for my awesome stay!
The "fairmont" in my understanding was all about "class" until I stayed there and learned otherwise.
Staff was friendly but room was less then impressive and we didn't get to sleep because there was drunken people roaming the streets yelling and we're not taken care of by security, could not wait to leave.
I try to stay at the MacDonald whenever I'm in Edmonton. I love the river valley view, the rooms are wonderful, staff terrific. I enjoy the atmosphere of the Confederation Lounge. Excellent get-away place for couples to enjoy and share memories and be a part of 'history'. It was a romantic experience worth every bit of $$. Service is wonderful and staff are great. Try a night or two and you will not regret.

The hotel staff were amazing, they went above and beyond what there job required them to do. Everyone there made our wedding an amazing day.
We can not thank them enough for all they've done.
Excellent hotel, excellent rooms, excellent service. A lady's home away from home. Just a couple things that make this hotel so good is that it has windows that open and it has a lovely pool, spa, garden area.
Such a lovely and elegant place to stay in the Centre of Edmonton. This is a feeling of old world elegance. Staff are trained in way that does often exist these days. I would always recommend to stay here!
Great property, clean, gives you a feel for Edmonton. The room was large and spacious and had just been cleaned. The internet connection was rapid and worked anywhere in the room itself. The restaurant had great food.
tis hotel was awesome for a romantic getaway
The MacDonald Fairmont hotel offers charming rooms, excellent staff service, a great breakfast buffet and a convenient spa that includes a steam bath, a sauna, a fitness room and a lovely pool. It is located in the heart of Edmonton with easy access to the Edmonton LRT system, shopping, restaurants and parkland. I would recommend this luxury destination to others.
Quiet and comfortable. Able to walk everywhere in the downtown easily. Preferable room choice is on the river side. Great view and quiet.
I only come here once a year for Mother's day brunch, every year. This is hands down the best Mother's Day brunch in Edmonton. The cooks go all out, huge selection, great flavor. Its a nice 2 - 3 hr sit down. Afterwards you can go get some pictures, take a walk on the terrace, etc etc . Highly recommend.

I stay at the Hotel Macdonald often when I am in Edmonton. The staff are always very friendly and do what they can to make my stay great. The hotel is one of the grand old railway hotels. Rooms have interesting nooks and crannies. The hotel has a great lounge.
Rooms are nice - other than small primary bathroom.Wifi is $14 per night. - not acceptable when paying $200 per night for standard room. Restaurant WAY over priced - I'm sure it's good food but we ate elsewhere. Staff is phenomenal. They brought milk and cookies for the kids when we were in packing the car. Like any downtown hotel parking extra. $25 for self park - $35 for Valet. The walk from... more
The Fairmont Macdonald was the location of our office Christmas party this year. We had four tables set aside on the ballroom and partook in the buffet lunch which included a selection of salads, hot buffet dishes and carved turkey. There was also a large table of desserts and cheeses, and our lunch was accompanied by a festive punch.
Service throughout the lunch was fairly attentive with wine...

These days, every time I travel to Edmonton I stay here, because, the Fairmont Macdonald is a very elegant hotel and the staff is always very friendly as well as accommodating. I enjoy this Fairmont in particular compared to others, for a few reasons in particular; mainly because, I am definitely a "foodie" and this specific one has more menu options than the typical. A lot more interestingly... more
The hotel is magic. And for a holiday stay it becomes even more beautiful. Wonderful touches...like cookies and candy canes on Christmas Eve in my room and then when I opened my door to leave on Christmas morning there was a stocking with candy and an orange. Just perfect.
The view was great and all the staff were caring, thoughtful and so pleasant!
\n\n
The food at the restaurant was extremely expensive and no different than regular restaurant food..
The bed and pillows were very comfortable and had a geat night sleep. The breakfast buffet had a very good selection of hot and cold foods and they were excellent. The staff was very friendly and helpfull.
\n\n
The bathroom fan was set on auto and did not have an on/off inside the bathrioom.
The staff always went above and beyond to help us. The service was
amazing which we appreciated!
\n\n
To our surprise the rooms were not cleaned to our standards, and we were
very disappointed with the food in The Harvest Room! The breakfast
buffet on Easter morning was terrible, probably the worse buffet
experience we have ever had! ...For$56 we were expecting a higher
quality, better tasting...

Loved the bar. Beautiful river valley view. Appreciated the complimentary upgrade.
The hotel had an old world charm with a modern twist. The bedroom was
excellent -size and decor and view! Staff wear very friendly, helpful

Charge for use of Internet. Furniture in bar / lounge area

excellent standards
Overlooks the North Saskatchewan river valley in Edmonton with the Riverboat

The noisy wedding party quests that stay up very late and like to talk loudly in the hallways.
Fairmont MacDonald is an upmarket brand so you have to accept that when booking you are going to pay a bit more. The location of the hotel is excellent and I enjoy staying in a building that has a genuine heritage. We booked the Harvest Room for our evening meal and choose the chef's recommendation which proved to be excellent. The service was efficient. On our experience we would certainly... more

The cost of maintaining a Wi-Fi system at the hotel is minimal, but then
charging for it is nothing more than gouging. Just one block away
Starbuck offers free Wi-Fi for the price of a coffee. Why then the hotel
charges so much for such a low cost service?
The service by the staff was outstanding, the porters were especially friendly. The location is great , and the view was great, even to someone who was born and raised in the city.
\n\n
I didn't like the cost of the parking!!
Genuinely friendly staff - had some great chats while checking in and at Breakfast the following morning. The saline pool and spa facilities are immaculate.
I received an unexpected room upgrade as well - thank you!
\n\n
Please upgrade to rum-cherries for Manhattan cocktails. Maraschino cherries just won't do at a Fairmont hotel.
The friendly people and professional staff.

I had booked a room that was not ready for me apon arrival. The stain on the carpet was unapeling and also stains were on the chairs. Also they couldn't give me a time limit on the original room I had booked. So I had to settle for a lesser room the bathroom was outdated and tub way to small for a romantic night with my wife. Thank you
The property is beautiful.

I specifically booked a "DELUXE King room", and upon checking
in , they said we were getting two double beds, and would be charged an
extra $30 a night for a king. After showing my confirmation from
Booking.com to them, they still insisted on the extra fee and that there
must have been some fine print that I missed! Only after requesting to

We checked in at 6pm and they did not have any rooms in our room type
ready so they actually down graded us to a smaller room. I would have
thought that if no rooms are available they should have upgraded us,
especially since we were not early.
Enjoyed a wondrful meal in the harvest room, best dinner I have ever had!
\n\n
Rooms were extremly dated aswell as the bathrooms making the seem dirty. Poor parking arrangements
I didn't like that you had to pay for parking, I excpect a place to
park my vehicle when I pay $200.00 to stay there. The tub still had hair
in it and was stained with pain spot, not very clean.
Almost everything.
\n\n
Booked room in advance with two beds, but they had me booked with only
one bed. I then had to pay an additional $30 per night($120).
Beautiful hotel. Beds were comfy but the friendly staff were the absolute best.
The staff were very friendly and went beyond the service they needed to provide us with to make our stay very special. The two dinners we ate in the hotel restaurants were excellent. Walking around inside the hotel looking at the historical decor in the different rooms made our stay even more enjoyable.
They upgraded our room to a suite at no extra charge, what a blessing!
\n\n
Unfortunately the hide-a-bed in the suite was uncomfortable.
I have been meaning to review The Hotel MacDonald for some time now..I went here with my other-half last Valentines Day, on the Romance Package (I think it was called). It was ok; though it didn't really live up to our expectations. The room was clean but nothing "special". The bed was nice, and the room service breakfast was about average.

Apparently this place is haunted since it's one of the oldest buildings in Edmonton. If you visit the restrooms you'll definitely believe the rumors and maybe even encounter a ghost! If you do, I'd ask it if the prices were as expensive back then as they are now! hahaha

Quiet, beautiful, elegant with old world charm and modern conveniences. Loved the pool, hot tub and exercise room, the lobby and having internet. Room was large and comfortable with excellent beds and specialty coffee. This is the place to stay and a quick walk to the river.
Okay, we use this place because my wife likes the gym - no ceiling fans. I don't - lousy equipment. Have enjoyed relaxing afterwards with a cheese plate in the snazzy Confederation Room.
So its nice and all but seems kind of outdated still? This maybe done on purpose but I dont get the elegance I expect from a place of this nature. The bar was wicked , service was awesome real quick. Okay, full disclosure first, I'm a Fairmont President's Club Premium member, so I've a history of liking these grand hotels. The reason I'm only giving it 4 stars is because I think that all Fairmont hotels are pretty ridiculously priced. I know that they are very luxurious and they are supposed to be "upper class" but I think it's a little over the top.
