Shin Ju is a Japanese buffet and restaurant on the Broadway and Hemlock area of Vancouver. I visited Shin Ju due to a craving for traditional Japanese cuisine. Upon visiting, you'll notice the settings are clean and spacious, the decor a little cluttered but modern, and the layout comfortable. Unfortunately, this does little to satisfy customers looking for a good dinner. The servers take and deliver your order, and then basically ignore you the rest of the time. The food is tasteless and spartan, the main portion size equal to that of an appetizer and the prices unfair. I would be surprised to see how anyone can return to this restaurant when there are so many far better choices within short driving and even walking distances. The food and service was so poor I didn't finish my lunch or check the washrooms, I simply paid my bill without a tip and left. The sushi reminded me of something I would find in a supermarket, except much smaller in portion size and much more expensive. The soup was tasteless and watered down, and was the last item served. Overall a very disorganized and improper way of presenting the food combined with poor service and poor quality food is enough for me to recommend staying away from this restaurant.
This place is your average neighbourhood sushi place. Nothing here will blow your mind, but nothing I've tried is bad either. The lunch boxes are very well priced at $7.50 to $8.95. The servers are prompt but not cordial, which is fine with me. If your in the area and want a quick cheap lunch, definitely drop by.
Went here for dinner after working out. The place was quite big and spacious but I was surprised because it was soooo quiet and there were only 3 customers. The staff was efficient but not super friendly.
The prices were reasonable, from $1.50 to $3.25 sushi pieces to $10-$12 tempura/ bento boxes. The cold noodles were on the mushy side and the tempura was just okay. The nigiri sushi was just...

My meal here left me very disappointed. We ordered a lot: spicy tuna roll, mexican roll, tempura udon, salmon sashimi, yaki onigiri (salmon) and oyster motoyaki. While things were inexpensive, the quality was definitely lacking. Everything lacked flavour. I did not like the rice in their rolls. They seemed really wet and sticky. The udon was tasteless. While the udon had a nice spring to it,... more
First off, I should say that my review is only based on the all-you-can-eat menu. I've never been to ShinJu for take out or anything else as it often looks deserted inside as was also the case this time.
A dollar more than its competitors' prices (Ninkazu, Fish on Rice, BC Sushi) Shin Ju's all you can eat menu looks pretty impressive and extensive on paper. In reality however, the quality is...

Just came back from an all-you-can-eat lunch at Shin Ju, a place I haven't visited before. I chose Shin Ju because it's close to home, I was craving Japanese food and I'm not a fan of Fish On Rice.
At $12 per person for a weekend lunch, Shin Ju has plenty of choices in the all-you-can-eat department. I should know. We tried them all.
The sushi was average. Not great but not horrible. The tuna...

I used to frequent this place, and it is a great go to. Serving up massive rolls, and being one of the only places that offers all you can eat and doesn't force each person in the dining party to order all you can eat this place is awesome.
For lunch time its always really busy, but if you phone in an order for pick up they will have it ready in no time! If you dine in service is always really...

*bleck...likely the worst sushi I have ever eaten....
The salmon sashimi tasted like an aquarium..and while I realize it's raw fish..good sashimi should not taste as such...
The rice on the rolls was dry and really disgusting..I am pretty sure it wasn't tuna in my spicy tuna roll...nor was the sauce on top spicy..it was sweet chili sauce..the tempura was ok...thankfully it would take a lot to...

It's so fast and easy to run in to their first-floor, corner location and order a sushi platter. They give me hot tea while I wait and I have never been able to finish a cup before my order is ready.
I get the value in their Sushi Platter Combo A ($27). I will grab this one for three people and it is a full meal. It has four pieces each of salmon, tuna and shrimp sushi. The pieces of fish are...

I have had me some good sushi over the years, and this was NOT one of those times. I walked in and placed an order for takeout, the service was slow and seemed to take a long time to get my order. I walked home and unpacked my sushi to my disappointment. I found the sushi to be warm, and the overwhelming smell of fish...... took one look, one wiff, and boom the whole thing was round binned. The... more
