I went to the Retro Diner on Monday May 5, 2013 with my daughter for Lunch. The food was excellent and the service was quick and fast. I'm going to be a regular customer I give them 5 stars from my experience. I would have to say one of the best places I've been to in Thunder Bay and I've been in most not many impress me like the RETRO DINER
Great concept and decor. Location has potential. Menu selection reasonable. Indifferent staff. Hours inconsistent. When are they even open?
I certainly agree with Behhna. The owner, Rose is a very demanding, driven boss. I can understand wanting to strive for excellence. However, her ability to competently guide her staff is less than desirable. This shows in the food and the service, her bad day becomes the same for all around her. I know, as I am one of many... more
The food was good; once upon a time.
The business itself lacks integrity as does the food preparation, kitchen clean up and overall atmosphere.
I knew people who worked for this owner. They were all mistreated. It definately makes an impact when you enter an establishment.
I enjoyed things on the menu - then they disappeared. So have I.
The scrambled eggs are cooked at 8am in kept in water on the counter (not refrigerated) and warmed up in the microwave as needed. The potatoes are pre-cooked and warmed in the oven, when they are not kept out on trays. The poached eggs are pre-cooked and kept in somewhat ice water. The bacon & sausage are pre-cooked & kept... more
Terrible!! We tried numerous times to go here because we hear its good....I think it's an urban myth! This place is never open. Don't even waste your time checking to see if its open....because likely it's not.
Have had breakfast here twice. Both experiences were very enjoyable. Atmosphere, decor, servers, price and food 'two thumbs up'. The service was not fast, but then I wasn't looking for an eat and run experience. The noise level was low permitting normal conversation.
On a downside, during cold weather the draft when the front door opens is not pleasant.
Will...

I had to write a review in response to the many negative reviews i have seen regarding Retro. Rose is a fantastic lady who puts her heart and soul in her baking and in turn now has a menu (breakfest and lunch) filled with classic favourites and new delicious specials. Breakfest on the weekend and lunch with amazing pasteries all... more
Rose has such a great concept - one that Thunder Bay has needed for some time.
She has great staff now, with more coming soon who care, are dedicated and make customers feel welcome.
Great vegetarian selections.
FANTASTIC desserts and the bread is top notch!!
Do yourself a favour and GO!
Been A few times, food ok but service is horrendous !! Waited 15 minutes for a can of pop while we watched the waitress sit and talk with friends. Ordered soup and sandwich got sandwich but no soup, reminded waitress about soup she still did not bring it. Finally another waitress brought out soup when we were done eating. The... more
I want to like this place. It's "homemade".
After months of not going because of poor service, Odd hours, Out of food, I went back... This is the second time I have gone back. The first time I stopped going was because they served my father mouldy potato salad, not a little bit of mould a lot a bit of...

I'm from out of town and was taken by a work colleague for lunch during the week. We went early as she warned that it gets busy and difficult to get a table. Enjoyed the retro decor, sat in a booth. Is not fast food so things a little slower paced. Had a meatloaf sandwich $9 came with tortilla chips... more
WONDERFUL FOOD & Wonderful service! +Open to suggestions for future take-out if they don't have what you are looking for. My take-out favourites: dark rye bread, sunflower rye bread and take-out meat pies. Wonderful little bottles of preserves. Their baking is absolutely to die for! Everything in the place is homemade and influenced by home-style and diner "classic" cooking. Reminds... more
Went in today looking for a good meal and was turned away 30 mins before they close at 2p. Was told they shut down the kitchen at 1:15p. The waitress waited until our jackets were off and we were sitting before telling us and then said we could order beverages. If you close at 2p you shouldn't shut down the... more
Everytime I go there the food is wonderful as ALWAYS!! and Good to see great friendly staff. Im telling all my friends to go and have some lunch and and fresh baking.
Seriously, stay away from this place. Food is forgettable and slow, rude staff. Was really hoping it had improved since my last visit, but defintely not. There are much better options in Thunder Bay. Spend your money at a business that deserves it.
The waitress suggested we forgot the homemade chicken pot pie because we were on lunch hour constraints....so we did..we ordered a simple sandwich (each) and it took almost 40 minutes to reach our table. The food is homemade....but slow in coming.
The decor is fun, the entrees are okay, the baking is good, but the service is absolutely horrible. As we were at the counter ordering, the woman walked away from us to talk to a patron at a table. When I told her that my husband had been in the middle of an order, she sighed and said "what can... more
Great service, wonderful wait-staff, cooks are great. Quality food, great variety too. Fresh ingredients and unique combinations. That is why I suggested TripAdvisor to add this restaurant in the first place!
Other then great food, wonderful breakfasts and personalities to match - they have a great bakery in the back - fresh breads, buns, etc.
Took dignitaries from Toronto here...

I ate at the Retro Bakery this morning and enjoyed their eggs benedict. They were well prepared, the sauce was good, though too little of it for my tastes, and the eggs were poached nicely. The restaurant is nicely decorated and clean.
The service today was hit and miss, our food arrived quickly but our waitress then seemed to forget...
