Service was good. We enjoyed a window seat to appreciate the sites of downtown. The service was very good, The steak with dijon pepper was done just to my liking. I know that the cod was excellent and there was a good wine selection. The only issue was that some food and wine was not available on a Sunday night. The experience over all was good and I would recommend it as a place to start an evening downtown.
This restaurant is now a Mediterranean place. We read good reviews on the pepper mill but when we arrived if was a Mediterranean restaurant.
We had a family dinner here and enjoyed our food very much. All of it was done exceptionally well; no one walked away from that meal hungry. Go for the fresh seafood when in season, and most likely, you will not be disappointed.
Good food but take note of Pepper in the title of the restaurant:) We have steak and I felt the pepper was a little overdone, I like to 'taste' my steak:)
What a great little treat to find such good food after wandering looking for an eating spot. We were fortunate to stop by early enough to make a reservation for later that night.
Great east coast seafood options, friendly service, of course, because it's Nfld! The coffee was the best of our journey so far! Highly recommended!
Whenever my son visits from Alberta this is the one restaurant he does not want to miss. It is a small restaurant with a nice atmosphere. I would recommend reservations as some nights there is not an empty table to be found. Staff are friendly and service good though some may find it a bit slow. When I go out... more
We decided to go out to dinner for New Year's Eve and lucky for us the Peppermill had an opening for two. Unlike most restaurants, they stuck with the regular menu. We were delighted to order the halibut, which is a signature dish for this restaurant. We were not disappointed. It was delicious and filling. I can't wait to return... more
The Peppermill is a quaint, small restaurant close to the Waterfront in St. Johns Newfoundland. My husband ate there while in the city with friends of ours and has been raving about the halibut ever since.
I went with him on his last trip in November and the four of us went to this restaurant together. I was not disappointed...

I wandered in here while I was looking for a place to eat. I had the cashew crusted fresh cod - it was amazing! I am still salivating over it. Fast service. The dish was perfectly cooked, and the fish was fresh and sweet. It went well with the chardonnay. The brownie cheesecake was nice, nothing spectacular, but delicious anyway.... more
We ate at this restuarant for our first anniversary, and it's now an anniversary favorite for all of our close friends. The menu is small but excellent, very nice ambiance.
My wife and I joined another couple for supper at the Pepper Mill a few nights ago. We were very pleased with the meal, although my friend who goes there fairly regularly said that the cooking can be a bit hit-or-miss. I had soup followed by blackened halibut served on a bed of pasta. The soup was a tomato-based puree... more
We were here the first of Oct, tourist season over, but by the time we were finishing our early supper, place was almost full. It does seem to be difficult to find moderately priced restaurants in St Johns, but this was good. I had 3 appetizers for supper, seafood chowder, very good, mussels with a cream sauce, again very good,... more
Came in 30 minutes before close, greeted with excellent service! The wine suggested to us paired nicely with every course we ate. The broccoli blue cheese soup was mouth watering, the phyllo-wrapped brie had a touch too much blueberry and not enough brie. Our main entrees (steak and pasta) were divine! The chocolate patee for dessert went beyond expectations. Will... more
We have been wanting to return to this spot and when I heard that halibut was in season, it was the perfect time to return. The Peppermill is known for it signature dish...Blacken Halibut. The food was spicy and tasty with a really good portion size. We made a reservation and got a window seat, which was nice. I wish... more
We went to the Peppermill twice during a five-night stay in St John's: once for dinner and once for dessert. We were there without reservations both times, which wasn't too much of a problem. We enjoyed our dinner very much, but service was not very attentive. The food was excellent, though, including the chowder, cod tongue salad, and pan fried... more
I had the pan fried cod which was excellent and the others in our group had the halibut which everyone agreed was good. The problems are with the service. The waitresses just don't know what to do and given that the owner was present all the time we were there, I'm guessing she doesn't know how to serve either. The... more
We wandered by late one evening and Peppermill still had a table. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of this restaurant. The food was very well prepared and tasty. Service was great. We loved it and it was reasonably priced.
Five of us had dinner there on a Friday night. You need a reservation as the place is small. - and a bit crowded. We all enjoyed our dinner except one who ordered the lobster poutine and said that it was more a guys meal and felt it a bit much for her "foodie" palette. I shared the seafood appetizer... more
There are no lack of restaurants in St. Johns's and you'd better make a reservation for most of them especially during tourist season.
We picked the Pepper Mill for our last night and quickly realized that we saved the best for last.
Everything was delicious, fresh, and cooked to order (although so much so that we "had" to get an...

Though we had a reservation for four people, the table was only set up for three which we found to be odd especially since the restaurant was not full. The table they put us at was round and more like something you'd see in a friend's basement rather than an expensive restaurant. As such, the legs were in the way... more
I am always a little confounded at where to take an out of town guest and get tired of my two "standby's". Tea Garden Holyrood, Get Stuffed.
Being a picky eater, I let guest perruse online menus first and she picked Peppermill. She LOVED her meal. The service was efficient and friendly and the atmosphere relaxed. We went two weeks...

Sad attempt at upscale food. Wine list deplorable and to make matters worse, our first selection was ' not available' as was our second and our third. Had to settle for a mediocre fourth choice or what may have been better would to have left. Restaurant was stifling hot, air conditioner non-effective. Salad came drenched in dressing, was sent back... more
I ate here April of 2012. This place doesn't have much for seating space, but the food it so flavorful. If you are looking for tasty fish look no further. Staff was very friendly. Parking is a bear, since it is downtown. Would highly recommend.
We look in and I thought we were back in the 1980's. Make sure you stay to eat. Food was very good and service even better. If you order the mussels for an appetizer, skip dinner. More than 30 and some of the best I ever had. Chicken dinner was just as good.
Great food, great service & a nice overall atmosphere.
My tour group of 11 ate here recently. I was very impressed how efficiently they dealt with the large group, and everyone agreed the food was outstanding. We felt fortunate to get a reservation on a Saturday night of the long weekend. I had the cashew-encrusted halibut...very tasty! Service was great, friendly and not slow at all. Highly recommended.
We had a really nice meal here, the local Canadian Gewurztraminer was a great aperitif before the meal.I started with Signature Chowder which was delicious and then had the Cashew Crusted Cod, my husband had the Curried Broccoli and the Cod Fillet which he had had before and loves. Highly recommend a visit here.... more
First of all note that this is a small place and if you don't have a reservation getting a table may be difficult, there were several people turned away during our meal. Greeted and seated promptly, specials explained and orders taken efficiently. Appetizers (Cod cakes and scallops & prawns) were properly cooked, seasoned and flavourful. Mains (Seafood Carbonara and Pork... more
Wanted to try the local delicacy Pan Fried Cod and it didn't disappoint.
It is a small place, but food and service are exceptional. I had dinner there the other night, food was fresh and delicious. Prices are very reasonable compared to other places in town. Servings are generous, as somebody else here noticed.
We ate dinner at the Peppermill and had an excellent dinner. I had the duck with partridgeberry which was cooked to perfection. The serving was very generous too. And the sweet potato fries were outstanding. My husband had the chicken stuffed with canadian bacon which he enjoyed enormously. We brought our 8 month old and they were very accommodating.
Dinner, once again was lovely : Salmon and Lobster tail with a beautiful sauce cooked to perfection and chicken with a great reduction. WOW !! Service was friendly and efficient. We are never disappointed. Reservations a must as they turned away a number of people. Great place for an intimate dinner.
Consistently great food. In need of an update on the look/feel of the place. Seems a little dated and old now.
A few of us tried the Pepper Mill this past Friday. We each enjoyed our meal and will definitely return! I had the fish cakes to start, the seafood Carbonear linguini as my entree and the white chocolate and mint creme brûlée. I can honestly say that it was one of the bet meals I've had in a very long... more
We made reservations for dinner. The restaurant is small so I would recommend reservations. The service was some of the best I have received on the island. I had the mushroom app which is a must. The halibut comes highly recommended as it should but it is spicy. I personally had the cashew encrusted cod, which is five stars. The... more
I've eaten in a few of the better 'so-called' restaurants in St. Johns, and I find this has been one of the more reasonably priced and satisfying restaurants of the bunch. Hoping that doesn't come across as negative, because it it not intended to be. This is a fine restaurant.
Decent atmosphere in a room that holds maybe 30 people...

Five of us went to the Peppermill for dinner a few weeks ago. Our thoughts on the food were a bit mixed, with the striploin and seafood carbonara well liked but the cod and salmon being about average (salmon was tad overcooked). However cod tongue appetizer was excellent. Prices were not unreasonable for a fine dining restraurant (just fix the... more
Charged with the task of finding an appropriate restaurant to take our clients to for a meeting in St. John's, I thought The Peppermill fit our moderate budget and restaurant type preferences. Normally, we pre-select our menu for ease of ordering and billing, so I called a month in advance to request a set or prix-fixe menu, as The Peppermill... more
Graet mussels, great scallops, great food and drink and wonderful service. Can't go wrong with that.
I was in St. John's on business and decided to find a decent restaurant for dinner. Based on TA recommendations I oped for the peppermill. At first glance the place looks nice and I was greeted with a smile. I was a walk-in which is always a risk, but fortunately they had room, I was early enough. I opted for... more
Dropped in with family on a Wednesday night and got the last table with many others turned away. Our family rated dishes as very good (fish chowder, mango chicken) to excellent (fishcakes, organic salad with wilted greens, cashew encrusted cod). Service was friendly but a bit slow. Main dishes were $ 20-30 not $ 15-20.

Visitied St. John for a week on business. My husband travelled with me and we stopped in at this restaurant on Tuesday night. I had the seafood carbonara and my hubs had the crusted cod. We were blown away at the quality and tase of the food here. We knew we we would be back! My hubs wanted to try... more
Well prepared seafood, some nice surprises flavourwise. Accommodating and enthusiastic servers. All round a very pleasant experience. Good value.
We walked in and were able to get a table without a reservation on a Tuesday night but we quickly could see that we were very lucky as many were turned away. The appetizers were flavourful and pentiful. Mussels in a beer sauce (26 we counted) were delicous. The baked cod was enjoyable. The lobster linguini was great with lots... more
the blackened halibut is excellent. you have an assortment of fish dishes prepared elegantly. you can also find traditional newfoundland dishes such as cod tongues and they too are delicious (skip the jelly bit tho..) great wine list to accompany and usually a lot of specials available. make reservations in advance!
This was our second visit to this restaurant, we went July 5, 2011. Our meal was fantastic, the sever was very pleasant and helpful. I had the cod dish with scrunchions and it was absolutely delicious. The rest of our party of 4 had fish dishes which were also much enjoyed.
I can highly recommend this restaurant.

We tried the obligatory cod's tongues here, which were good. Nice chowder and a huge steak meal (though slightly over done for rare). Great friendly service. Definitely worth a visit.
Ok food and ok service. Not a bad place but not worth the price by any means.
The prices for the food was reasonable to good for the high quality.
Staff was superb even when things went badly. A server tipped a glaas of water on one of my guest s, he took it in stride and strangely the whole evening got better.
The atmosphere was great, wine list good, menue varied and excellent.
Went to The Pepper Mill on a whim, had never tried it before but thought we would give it a go and didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly suprised! This is not a big restaurant, in fact I found it a little on the small side, but the food was delicious and I liked the menu. Overall a great experience.
The fresh food and atmosphere were a nice change. My husband had a stuffed chicken breast special and a piece of ligonberry pie. I had the fantastic mussels in white wine sauce and a salad. Great service. Look forward to going back when next I'm in St. John's.
My husband and I went and found a busy restaurant on a wednesday night. The food overall was good, but I was so disappointed by the seafood chowder - which was what i came for. It had lots of seafood, but lacked flavour. Not what I expected.
His cod however was tasty and my main as well. Service was cheerful,...

I went to The Peppermill last night for supper without a reservation after a hike up Signal Hill. The seafood was outstanding. Loved the food, loved the atmosphere. Try the wilted spinach w/prawns for lunch or the prosciutto Cod w/brie for dinner, unreal.
I only ate there once but I did feel as though it was the most disgusting restaurant food I had ever tasted! I would never go back there. The restaurant was freezing, there was water all over the floor (from snow), it was uncomfortable. The best thing about this place is the atmosphere, which really isn\’t even spectacular when you\’re faced with other choices in the downtown area.
great seafood and the rack of lamb is the best in st. john’s
i have always enjoyed the seafood at the peppermill and the rack of lamb is to dye for i would recomend it to everyone
My husband and I went here for dinner one night and were quite disappointed. My husband had cod which was so undercooked that it was practically raw. We won’t be returning : (
Waiter was hovering over our table and recomended every entree on the menu as 'good' or 'great'. Soup was ok, had to add salt, seafood chowder should have salt added during cooking. Salad was good. Tried 2 types of Cod Filet. Pan fried was tasteless. With Brie was undercooked. Actually it was raw. I wouldn't give this restaurant a pass. For a slow night (Tuesday) I would have expected... more
Very poor. Soup was tastless. They forgot about our salad. Kitchen staff were loud. Local radio station music was not good dinner music.
