French country cooking with local ingredients and reliable service excel at this hopping yet cozy brasserie, where tables are first come, first served. Chef Sean Brennan provides the standbys: moules, steak frites, endive salad with lardons, rich onion soup, but the plats du jour really show off his chops. For example, chicken paillard ($23) with chard, pancetta, and chanterelles in a Dijon... more
"High-quality" French cuisine built on "good ingredients prepared to mouth-watering perfection" earns Vancouver Island's Top Food honors for this "always-crowded" "true bistro" in Downtown Victoria; add in "exceptional", "knowledgeable" servers and a "relaxed" atmosphere, and fans have "no hesitation" about spending their "hard-earned money" here; P.S. no reservations, so be "prepared to wait."
In the overheated world of food fashion, it's so refreshing to find simple French bistro fare deftly prepared and served at reasonable prices. L'Ecole's menu changes daily, depending entirely on what comes in fresh from Victoria's hinterland farms. Because honesty is what's on offer at this warm, comfortable restaurant, preparation is simple, no big reductions or complicated jus, just... more

Never eaten here. That's because they appear unfriendly to single diners. When I went there was a queue ... however they didn't seem all that enthusiastic to accommodate me. The place has a tight-packed vibe of classy pretentiousness anyway.
A true culinary experience. Worth the wait (no resos). Steak frites are always an excellent option. Highly recommended.
Sean Brennan makes the best creme brûlée on the planet. Having done the "Creme Brûlée Tour of France", I feel qualified to make this judgement. ;-)
Lining up for what is supposed to be Victoria's hottest eatery was not too onerous in the 15 degree temperature. Brasserie L'ecole does not take reservations. From reading the reviews, nearly all five stars, the trick is to get there before 5:30 and join the line. Because the restaurant is small and fills quickly, you'll most likely be seated for much later. They'll text you when your table is... more
This is by far the best restaurant in the city! The price is a bit on the high side, so it's great for special occasions and couples. I had a fish dish that was GF, and creme brûlée for dessert. It was my first CB, so yes it was the best creme brûlée I've ever had ;) We accompanied our dinner with a delicious bottle of red wine. The service was impeccable. The atmosphere is nice, it is a small... more
We arrived early, at 5:00 pm and were the first, but by 5:30 the line was down the sidewalk and full up for the first serving. My wife and I shared mussels and a salad to start, and the salad was served on two plates, both large portions. Mussels fresh and delicious. We ordered two main courses which we split, fish and a burger, both superb. The bottle of Vacqueyras was reasonably priced and... more
Great atmosphere, great staff and quite possibly the best burger I've ever eaten. A hidden gem.

A beautiful fine dining french restaurant. I went here for my girlfriends birthday. I had always wanted to come here but that no reservation thing had me. To my surprise we rolled up around 6pm and just walked right in (it was a wednesday mind you).
The staff and service was extremely friendly and knowledable. I was debating the french onion soup or the mussels. A price difference...

Truly enjoyed this unique place! Menu is one if a kind. Every dish was scrumptious & large potion sizes. Only downside was how long we had to wait for a table. They don't take reservations but we were told we could put our name on a list if we showed up at 5 and come back at the assigned time. No one was waiting to eat at that time so no list. Cake back at 8 & waited an hour for a table. Wish... more
You may be looking at this place and wondering "why is there a fancy French restaurant in the middle of China Town in Victoria BC?" I have no idea, but it's good.
There is a trick to getting a table at Brasserie L'ecole. They open at 5:30, but who the heck wants to eat that early when you're on vacation? So don't even bother going early and waiting in line. It's a small restaurant with only...

I was expecting something magical. This place didn't blow me away, but the food and service were both great. Everyone is right, the frites are fantastic. Huge lineup though, so get there early.
First off, it seems Canadians may use tripadvisor more than yelp b/c this place didn't have many reviews (only 67 at the time) yet on TA there were almost 1000. We strolled in at 6:00, half an hour after they opened, for two of us, and we were told to come back at 730 for a table. It's THAT busy. They were out of the liver mousse and beef paleron, ironically the two things I wanted!
However,...

What a find! We arrived at around 8 pm and we're greeted with warmth and humor by the host. We were offered drinks while we waited, a nice touch. 15 minutes later we were seated and, despite our being dressed very casually, felt right at home. Was such a treat to be able to go out relatively late in Victoria and still have a warm reception and delicious meal. They have a fabulous European wine & beer selection, beautiful food, knowledgable staff, cozy and unpretentious ambiance.. The downside to coming in later is they had run out of some things (as they should - it's a small, busy place). The upside is, no lineup!
The restaurant is very small and narrow. Does not take reservations. First come first serve only. Plan on coming and waiting in line by 5:15pm to ensure first seatings. Chicken Liver and Chocolate Truffle Cake highly recommended. Yum! The waiter recommended the Duck which I would rate average but did not really like the sausage that came with the duck.
I love this place, prompt thoughtful service, a well thought out menu, the lamb was the best I have had, a nice wine list fantastic drinks in a great authentic spot, no reservations, full every night go early they will give you a time to come back, a hidden treasure
I've only been to Brasserie L'ecole once, but it was well worth the wait. We had made several attempts (they don't take reservations) to try the restaurant but always missed first seating and didn't want to wait for the next one.

Most recent visit: Stopped in late on a Friday night (10:30pm)... we were in town from Vancouver and I had not been here in years. I finally made it to Brasserie L'Ecole and it meets the mark of its reputation. Good food, good wine list, good service. No reservations which is nuts. We lined up and got a table. The restaurant is very dark. The menu is remarkably missing anything vegetarian. So not west coast. All in all, 8/10.
When there are five people in a party, there is always the chance that someone will be disappointed in their meal. Not so at L'Ecole. I can't say anymore than everyone else has but what I love most about Brasserie is that you can share anything you want on the menu. My Husband and I stayed in a condo in Victoria last September (2013.) My mother-in-law joined us for part of the week. We decided to go to the Brasserie L'ecole because it had gotten great YELP and Urbanspoon reviews and because it was close to where we were staying on Swift St. We were also looking for a replacement for a very elegant, eastern European restaurant that had closed. Table for six a little difficult to get as this restaurant doesn't take reservations. Judging by the lineup at 5pm, (open at 5:30) they don't need too! We ended up with a nice corner table. Service and decor very good. Value as expected for this calibre of eatery. Overall an excellent experience.
This is my top pick of restaurants in Victoria. If I ever want to have a great meal, and have a nice quiet romantic time, I come here. Absolutely amazing food, ambience and service. Very happy with everything. We got the mussels, oysters and dates for appies; steaks and fancy frites for dinner and truffles for dessert. Wine list was fabulous as well. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Wonderful food. Had mussels, sausage, chicken liver pate, olives. Home made sausage with whole grain mustard was yummy. Only disappointment was summer squash which supposed to be roasted but was boiled and flavorless.
What a brilliant restaurant. We arrived without a reservation - the restaurant was clearly very busy and, initially, we were told a 20-30 minutes wait but within 2-3 minutes we were found a table. The food, service and atmosphere at this restaurant were fantastic. The pork belly starter was particularly delicious.
Definite recommend.
They don't take reservations, but when you show up, if they are busy, they will take your cell phone # and call you when your table is ready. Informal classic French bistro dining, the food is always delicious. If you venture away from the Steak-Frites (the special frites w/ parmesan, garlic, parsley and truffle oil- very tasty), you will find the menu filled with fresh and seasonal local ingre
Wow! Best steak I have ever eaten, had truffle oil, was crispy on the outside and perfect red almost blue on in inside, frites with rock salt. I have not had something like this since I lived in Toronto....almost impossible to find good steak and frites
This is perhaps pound for pound one of the best restaurants in Victoria. The wine and beer knowledge of Steve the bartended is fantastic, knowledgeable and well timed. Marc is a gracious host who never hesitates to help in whatever way he can. I have not
Food, service and the room all have great personality. It was our 'last supper' choice before the birth of our daughter.
The frites, amazing! We were lucky enough to sneak a table without a reservation moments after opening. After being led to a small table in the back of the restaurant i began with the drink menu. A tour de force of incredible imported beers from Europe an
impromptu visit managed bar seats (2), fantastic! great service, suggested wines were perfect and wonderful food. bunny was tasty and the suggestion wine - well, i ordered anotehr glass.
Big star of Victoria. Hard to get a seat.Yummy oysters on half shell. Steak was tough, but tasty. Blue cheese sauce was good. Romantic for first daters. Service was a little scatter brained, but super friendly.
transport's you to France ~ a lively & tasty french bistro experience. No snoot & top-notch moules frites.
Excellent meals, lovely French boite decor. Wine list is amazing and sommelier very knowledgable. One of the best in Victoria.
BRILLIANT. Best fries anywhere, gourmet and delicious. And the rest of the menu is delightful French cuisine, prepared and served beautifully.
Best restaurant in Victoria! Have been going there for years and continues to be consistently good. Menu changes according to fresh local food that's available. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and level of service.
Fabulous service! They were fully booked but made room for us to have dinner at the bar. The barman was very informative of seafood choices and let us try a variety of wines with our meals.
Food is top notch as is service. Very small. Need to reserve far in advance.
Best restaurant value in the city!!! Brasserie decor with excellent service. Loved the wine-by-the-glass selection and knowledgeable wine staff.
I love the attention to detail on the plate. Truly locally sourced - if only they had a decor that absorbed sound.
Consistently gets my butt in their chairs with well-price, well-cooked affordable bistro fare.
Just keeps getting better. Short ribs braised in red wine and chicken liver/cognac mousse pate starter were equal to any dishes I've ever eaten anywhere.
Authentic Parisian ambience; unpretentious warm welcome; top quality ingredients prepared with layers of flavour; chef and front of house know how to make customers happy; its a winner in every way.
Great steaks and chips! A beer and wine selection for every customer taste.
Best restaurant in Victoria by a mile. Great food, knowledgeable staff and a memo that's focused on French cuisine. Don't forget to try the excellent cheese selection.
Everything is right at the Brasserie. At times, food delivery can be slow, but the food is always beyond superb. The "frites" are beyond words (get the truffle oil!) Bring a friend and enjoy a nice Belgian beer while you wait.
You won't get a table unless you reserve at least the day before. Worth it, though. Good cheese, good beer.
One of our favourite restaurants. We make a point of visiting it everytime we're in Victoria and it's always a highlight. Beautiful french bistro fare with an excellent wine list. Small and cozy. I always get mussels and frites - delicious.
Amazing! Hidden in the middle section of this old, run down building on Government Street across from China Town in Victoria. All I hear are wicked reviews about this place, and it is very well priced for the quality and service that they offer.
Brasserie L'ecole is one of my favourite restaurants in Victoria. Great wine list, daily menu, good steak-frites.
Marc the Maitre D can be snarky and not as accomodating as he could be, but the food and anything by the glass concept is wonderful. Steak frites and truffled frites are to die for.
We happened to be there on the chef's birthday so it was very festive. I will definitely go back again when I am in Victoria in September!
Meh, food was okay....nothing to write home about...probably won't go back
This restaurant, which has won all kinds of awards since arriving on the Victoria scene less than 3 years ago, serves great French food without making you feel like an uncultured slob if you don't know what something is. They also don't present you with a plate with more white space showing than is covered with food. The portions are generous and the prices quite reasonable for what you are... more
Formerly a Chinese school, Brasserie L'Ecole is an authentic French-style brasserie. The interiors of this place are a rich blend of reds and browns with a polished wooden floor and slate-topped bar complementing it. The food is simple and the menu is dotted with the common specialties. Apart from these, wines are also available. The food, the decor as well as the warmth of this eatery are what... more
Brasserie L'ecole is a French, Italian, and Contemporary restaurant where most Menuism users came for a family meal, paid more than $50, and tipped more than 18%.
The multiple award-winning Brasserie L'ecole occupies what was once a Chinese schoolhouse (hence the name), with 14-foot ceilings, dark woods, and warm red walls. It looks every inch the French brasserie, and has the food and wine to match. Chef Sean Brennan is something of a local celebrity. He uses primarily local produce and meats to create classic French dishes like duck confit, steak... more
