A Horrendous Experience

A good friend of mine had booked a large scale back piece with Kevin Polanski at DistINKtive a month prior to our arrival on appointment day; I was on the market for a tattoo sleeve and was under the impression I'd be able to sit back with my friend as she had her piece done, gauge the artist's skill level, and potentially book an appointment with Kevin for a large piece as well. I had driven in from out of town to accompany my friend and was excited to see her get her first large scale tattoo.

Upon arrival we were greeted by an artist who told us to wait for Kevin as he was unavailable. We waited for some time and when Kevin emerged he seemed confused as he looked through his appointment book; he said he'd be right back. He left us in the waiting area for some time when a female employee approached us and said that my friend had not been properly booked and the time she had anticipated to be tattooed was now double booked with another one of Kevin's clients. We were puzzled as my friend had been to DistINKtive on several occasions prior to discuss details, including the length of time it would take for Kevin to finish the tattoo (which he explained he had hoped to do in one sitting,) as well as confirming her appointment in itself.

Kevin returned to discuss the matter with my friend as I waited patiently on a couch nearby. He assertively explained that his other client had phoned the morning of to confirm their appointment, therefore the other client's appointment somehow took precedent over my friend's. My friend had booked this appointment nearly a month in advance as she had an event approaching where she had hoped to show off her new ink.

Kevin was not apologetic in any sense of the word and sternly offered to re-book the appointment at a later time; my friend respectfully explained her situation and the reason she had booked her appointment ahead of time (even though she had done so prior to appointment day.) Kevin remained unapologetic and didn't seem to care for my friend's business at this point, he even stated that he "doesn't remember every client" as though he had no prior knowledge of my friend's situation, even though she was proactive in having everything set up. My friend kindly asked for her deposit back as she was now, for lack of a better term, screwed, and Kevin became very angry -- his tone, pointed. He stated that no matter what, a refund for her deposit was "not going to happen" and pointed to a sign that stated as such. Given the circumstances, however, it was obvious my friend was entitled to a refund as DistINKtive's questionable organization skills were to blame.

At this point I see a man I believe to be in his 40s using foul language and raising his voice to a 20 year-old girl. I approached Kevin and my friend to be the voice of reason and make peace; I kindly asked Kevin if there was possibly a manager we could speak to to discuss a potential deposit refund; Kevin scowled at me and said "I'm the f**cking owner of this f**cking shop" to which I replied, "Oh, my apologies, I had no idea. There's no need to swear." Kevin then pointed to the front door and said, "You. Get the f*ck out of my shop." -- I was horrified. I had approached a heated situation between a grown man and a young woman with dignity and respect, was verbally harassed, and then kicked out of an establishment. I told Kevin that his behaviour was inappropriate and that I'd be happy to leave.

I walked outside and waited for my friend for a few minutes. She advised me that Kevin tried to entice her to keep her appointment with DistINKtive and that he'd even tattoo her the next day (which was by no means an option five minutes earlier.) My friend respectfully declined and eventually got her deposit returned to her even though Kevin stated whilst returning her money, "I don't usually do this, but --" and that was the last time I will ever step foot into that establishment again. In 2013 I expect so much more from the tattoo industry; it has come such a long way and the tattoo artists I've encountered in my life have given me the utmost respect, and vice versa. It is encounters such as these that solidify and reinforce the stigma attached to tattoo shops and people with tattoos in general.

Head my warning, if you want to get tattoos in Brantford, go elsewhere. I'd suggest Kreative Khaos personally.

Sorry about your experience

Your right juss that doesn't sound very professional. I am very sorry about the luck you had at the other shop in town. But it still isn't my requirement to fix yours, or their mistakes. I would never do something so terrible. Again...the staff and I at DistINKtive are truly sorry your experience there. In the Future we will try not to laugh at other artist's skills or people's misfortunes. It will be hard but we will try.

The fantastic reviews that we have earned are from the astounding work we do. I wish I could reverse time and give you the tattoos you deserve. Tattoos are forever. Obviously. Oh... and your attitude was not that of one of my amazing clients anyway. I wish I could tattoo everyone, what a beautiful city this could be
