The three levels of bars and cafes here are rue Crescent landmarks, and the New Orleans-style sidewalk and first-floor terraces (open in warm months) make perfect vantage points from which to check out the pedestrian traffic. Inside and down the stairs, the pub, with English ales on tap, attempts to imitate a British public house and gets a mixed crowd of young professionals.

"I may be drunk, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly," reads the Churchill quote that is the motto, of sorts, for this watering hole. Yup, the odds of waking up next to someone regrettable are high. The odds of remembering the night before? Nil to zilch. Throngs of hard-up, done-up suburbanites and tourists flood this Crescent Street landmark looking to get loaded and... more

Winston Churchill is one of the more popular bars on Crescent, and for good reason. During the day, they have great drink specials (including a gigantic Hoegaarden) as well as a balcony for dining or drinks. Their waitresses will also politely laugh when you ask who the portrait on the wall is.

But at night, it's a whole different story. There will be a long line to get into the basement ($10... more

I've been here many times over the years. It was actually one of the first bars I ever went to.

Seems like a MTL institution. Sort of pubby / restaurant during the day, then the BASSment (play on words, yes), turns into a full blown club with VIP booths, a dancefloor, with expensive covers and coat-check. So so place to hang out. Low ceilings, and, you definitely know you're in a basement.

Went there on a sunday night, not crowded but the service was still sub-par. Drinks were okay. Nothing special. About the same price as anywhere else. However, there is an obligatory 15% gratuity for just two people. We were using US dollars and they did not exchange it properly, ended up paying a fair amount more than we should have.

Whether your mood dictates a little elbow bending or cue-stick finesse, striking up a conversation or just people watching, few places in Montreal allow you to do it better than Churchill's. One of the first success stories on Crescent Street, this bar has been one of the city's best known for more than 30 years. The atmosphere is chummy, with smiles and laughter all around, though some might... more

This complex has been a mainstay on Crescent Street since 1967, and helped usher in the nightlife for which the area has become famous. In addition to two outdoor terraces overlooking Crescent, there are three floors, each with its own distinct personality: the cozy Sir Winston Churchill Pub, the more upscale Winnies Bar and Restaurant, and a stylish dance club/lounge called Karina. In the pub,... more
