First and foremost, the Whalesbone is Ottawa's Oyster House. Located at 430 Bank Street since June 9 2005, the crew has become renowned for quality oysters and an outstanding kitchen brigade. We are Ocean Wise certified, which means we only serve sustainable seafood choices that are caught, harvested or farmed in a way which ensures the long term health and stability of that...

As soon as you walk in are you met with the red bricks, bikes and forgotten posters that you would if you walk into an alley -- IN THE GOOD WAY! The locale captures perfectly the feeling of being at a little oyster shack by the sea; prices are a little steep, but worth it for the phenomenal takes on meals. The appetizer bread is in-house baked, the butter salted to perfection. Beers are local and paired perfectly to meals, as is the wine list. Ordering oysters comes with a slew of traditional, new and invigorating toppings.
We came out on friday night around 8pm and good we came in a bit early cause we did not have reservation and it's packed. We got a seat at the bar, which is pretty cool, got to see all the oyster actions.
The oysters are soooo good. From the west coast to the east coast. Loved ones from PEI. We got a deal $35for a dozen. Sooooo delicious!
Whalesbone is good, certainly fun, but perhaps my expectations were a bit too high when I walked in to their dark garage of a restaurant. The menu--beyond the main attraction, oysters, that is--feels a bit erratic and scattered. Paired with a space that is sparsely decorated, Whalesbone feels like the kind of place my friends and I would have conjured up in university--plentiful beer, a... more
Good food. Service is attentive. Portions a little light for my likings. Deecent wine selection.
I love it. Great oysters with many choices of great sUces, and I'm not even a big oyster fan. Can be hot and crowded.
I'm in town visiting for a few days and decided to try whalesbone based on a local's recommendation and the great reviews on yelp.
The place is fine, but not worthy of 4.5 stars! I started with a dozen oysters, which were fresh and delicious, but poorly shucked. For a place with "oyster" in the name, I expect better. I had oyster shell in almost every piece. As I was sitting at the bar and...

This place is amazing! It's everything I thought it would be. Funky atmosphere and great service. The wine list is phenomenal. I had the mussels in a thai coconut broth and they were outstanding. It definitely lives up to the hype. I will definitely be returning.
So this is our second time at the Whalebone and despite our visits being almost two years apart the food is still outstanding. Love this place. Highly recommend you try if you're ever in Ottawa.
The steelhead trout I got was one of the best fish meals I ever got... Highly recommended, I love that place!
Brilliant oysters. Relaxed and hip atmosphere. Inventive and delicious cuisine. Fantastic service.
Great lunch. Seems to be a "men who lunch" kind of haunt. Go early, it gets crowded and it will always be small. Avoid sitting at the tables just across from the bar. I got an elbow in the head.
Seafood was excellent. Lunchtime menu has simple hearty stuff (bahn mi, fish and chips, lobster roll) etc.
Friendly service. More like you just dropped in to a buddy's place than formal dining.
My previous experience with Kenny Rogers and food was limited to his chain of chicken joints which were popular in the late 90s. This changed when I walked into Whalesbone and heard him crooning on the turntable behind the bar.
As I was drinking a local pint, eating an array of oysters and listening to Kenny's dismay about Lucille, I was feeling that life was good.
The euphoria didn't go away...

We're so fortunate to have sustainable fish/seafood oysters in ott. This is truly a gem in the city.
Most of the review is look good. So we were based on those reviews to try this restaurant. But after our dinner the feeling was not very good. 1, their kitchen ventilator is not working very well, so you feel very oily smoke inside the restaurant seating area. 2, their oyster was just average, no surprise
Whalesbone never fails to deliver. Cute and cozy, friendly and knowledgable staff (Hi Eean! Thanks!), good beers and wine. Last night we brought the inlaws in from out of town here. We had oysters, obviously, which are always amazing with their selection of sauces, along with the chowder (mmm!), ceviche, walleye, and the trout, which for me was the dish of the evening. We finished off with both... more
Went to the Whalesbone for a special occasion tonight and heard good things, left disspointed.
Just kidding it was the best meal I've had in my life.
We started with the oysters, (I recommend the west coast) and a bowl of mussels. Both were excellent. The service was phenomenal and the staff were very knowledgable and friendly. The ambience is great as well.

Always a favourite and one of the tops in my go-to list. Great menu that changes often enough, great service, and, of course fantastic selection of oysters. If you haven't been, go. Go right now.
Our annual trip to Ottawa and to the Whalesbone. Quite simply the best seafood you will get anywhere on the planet. I even had the 'scallop ceviche' as an appertiser! Great people, great fun, and ask Jay for the Chef's table if you want the full experience. Not cheap though!
Really good food, cozy ambience, and awesome staff, but the price point is just a tad high. I appreciate their approach to sustainable seafood, but if they could lower their prices $3-5 an entree it would be a place we would go often, rather than once a year.
I should probably downgrade elmdale tavern to 3 stars as well....
It pains me to give this place a 3 because they source from local farmers and only serve sustainable seafood which are things that matter to me a lot.
The servers are extremely attentive and nice.
While the food was decent, we had the lobster risotto and Ontario walleye with BC clams, it is not worth $100 (after tax, tip, tap...

The lobster risotto was amazing as was everything else I had. From the pre-appertizers oysters and the decontructed banana cream pie, there wasn't anything I didn't love. Will definitely be back.
I hate to rain on this parade, but..
Had the lobster risotto, and it was good. Not memorable, but good. Lobster might have been a tad overdone, but it worked. If I had paid $30 for this dish, I'd be satisfied. For $45, I feel cheated.
I went here based on some previous reviews claiming this dish was "phenomenal" and "one of the top 5 dishes I've ever eaten", but I only had it 3 hours ago, and...

Had lunch here a year ago and couldn't stop thinking about the banana cream pie so made sure to revisit this weekend while in Ottawa. The restaurant is very small so be sure to make a reservation. This was my second visit to the Whalesbone, and I was still impress by the incredible ambiance of the place, the super friendly staff, and of course, the excellent food. The only deception was that the menu was exactly the same has my last visit 5 months ago.
I got food poisoning! Went to whalesbone on kent the day before Mother's Day to celebrate with my mom because I was working Sunday. It completely ruined our whole day! I had to walk out of the theater so I could go home to puke. Missed a day of work to. I work in a restaurant and Mothers Day was really busy, they had 350 people that day. I lost $170 because of them. I will never return ever!
Really nice food! Best chowder I've eaten. Gorgeous lobster risotto. Food steaming hot...no dishes languishing around waiting to be served. Tiny gem, not to be missed.
Went here for the first time this weekend and must say......WOW!
Its just a tiny little spot on Bank St, reservations definitely required ahead of time but what a pleasant surprise. The food was stunningly fantastic and the great throwback atmosphere, we loved it and will recommend to any of our friends and family!

We went here for dinner last week and it was great. We had a large group so I called ahead to make a reservation. Well, I enjoyed the first two times as well. Oysters to start and fish main. Great, I mean great, service. Tiny place. We needed reservations for Monday at six, even. Maybe Ottawa's best seafood joint. Wonderful atmosphere. Lovely staff. Great for a date night or dinner, drinks and of course oysters with friends!
Not my first time here. Enjoyed first visit enjoyed nothing but the oysters this visit.
First of all expect to pay $55-85 per person (one app, one main, one drink, no tax, no tip).

Came here on a Saturday night during our short Ottawa trip the past weekend after reading the reviews here. Was expecting more choices on raw seafood but they only had oysters on the shell. This restaurant is a bit pricey but worth every penny. The fish and seafood are sustainably caught and the food is exquisitely cooked. The sauces they have for their oysters are amazing. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I live in downtown Ottawa and this is my favorite restaurant here.
I decided to walk down to the Kent St take-out location for lunch. Previously I had ordered a shrimp salad which was fantastic so thought I get the same or a variation. Being only a block away from my office, Whalesbone has been a great restaurant to meet with clients or even just to have a casual quiet lunch. I'm always impressed with the service and environment the restaurant offers.

Scallop ceviche, PEI oysters... Ended off with Churros con chocolate! Carefully sourced ingredients and eclectic interior make this place a worthwhile experience. I would highly recommend this... more
Definitely my favourite restaurant in Ottawa. Pub atmosphere with high end dishes. Perfect oysters, beautiful food, friendly and attentive staff. Perfect combination of relaxation and mouth watering dishes.
One of my favorite restaurants in Ottawa. Reservations are a must unless you plan to eat at the bar. The small, intimate, warm and nicely decorated atmosphere is perfect for a romantic meal or catching up with a small group of friends. The seafood is outstanding and the tunes coming out of the vinyl record table is the finishing touch on the homey vibe.

I have been walking past Walesbone for a long time now, peering in hopefully. From the street, to be honest, it is not very welcoming. Dull windows give into a long dark, bar-like room. I was contemplating 4 stars but decided on 5 due to the very friendly service and the fact that the wait staff took the effort to run outside and see if they could return the hat to the young girl that forgot her at the table (as it was -5 the would need it)

This small location offers an intimate and festive experience. In an ecclectic decor, the staff welcomes you with a friendly attitude. Made reservations the day before our visit. Oysters were fantastic. We had walleye and haddock for mains. Both were well prepared and the presentation was outstanding. I highly recommend this restaurant and suggest you make a reservation if you want a table. If I lived in Ottawa I would eat here at least once a week!
Nice atmosphere even if it's a small dim lighted place, music to our ears from an old record player with vinyl records...

The place is small and we went ther without a reservation, which meant we sat at the bar. That is the best. Food was all excellent. It helps if you like seafood, because that is certainly the theme of Whalesbone. Too bad (for us) it was so small and popular. This review is a little late. I went here back in June for a late dinner with some friends. The service was attentive but the food took a little longer than expected. The restaurant is very small so be sure to book reservations on weekends.

Charming décor in a small space with a lively atmosphere helped along by vinyl music. Garage door window brings the outside in, while the vines growing out front keep it private - cute! (Very beach house.)

The scallop cerviche is outstanding.
We sampled the mackerel and the walleye. Both were marvellous. The accompaniments were eclectic and creative; crispy egg plant and sauces with lime and a hint of delicate Thai.

Had a chance last week to eat at the Whalesbone Oyster House on Banks. What an excellent little find it was. Small menu but excellent quality and value. Oysters were very good. Service was excellent. Not a place you would stumble upon but worth looking up.
I agree with Andrew K: "This place is okay. Its got the best seafood I have had in Ottawa, which isn't saying much. This place wouldn't last a month in Vancouver. "

You really come here for the fresh oysters and funky atmosphere. The main dishes themselves are pretty average and generally expensive for what you get. For more than two years, I have been agreeing to go to the Whalesbone Oyster House with my husband. For many reasons we never went - until last night. Brick walls and wooden tables make for a cozy atmosphere where chefs hang out in their spare time. The rustic yet refined, sustainable, sea-to-sea menu changes daily, but oysters are a specialty (east and west coast), with different sauces and add-ons.
