An experience

As soon as you walk in are you met with the red bricks, bikes and forgotten posters that you would if you walk into an alley -- IN THE GOOD WAY! The locale captures perfectly the feeling of being at a little oyster shack by the sea; prices are a little steep, but worth it for the phenomenal takes on meals. The appetizer bread is in-house baked, the butter salted to perfection. Beers are local and paired perfectly to meals, as is the wine list. Ordering oysters comes with a slew of traditional, new and invigorating toppings.

We came out on friday night around 8pm and good we came in a bit early cause we did not have reservation and it's packed. We got a seat at the bar, which is pretty cool, got to see all the oyster actions.

The oysters are soooo good. From the west coast to the east coast. Loved ones from PEI. We got a deal $35for a dozen. Sooooo delicious!

Whalesbone is good, certainly fun, but perhaps my expectations were a bit too high when I walked in to their dark garage of a restaurant. The menu--beyond the main attraction, oysters, that is--feels a bit erratic and scattered. Paired with a space that is sparsely decorated, Whalesbone feels like the kind of place my friends and I would have conjured up in university--plentiful beer, a... more

I'm in town visiting for a few days and decided to try whalesbone based on a local's recommendation and the great reviews on yelp.

The place is fine, but not worthy of 4.5 stars! I started with a dozen oysters, which were fresh and delicious, but poorly shucked. For a place with "oyster" in the name, I expect better. I had oyster shell in almost every piece. As I was sitting at the bar and... more

Great lunch. Seems to be a "men who lunch" kind of haunt. Go early, it gets crowded and it will always be small. Avoid sitting at the tables just across from the bar. I got an elbow in the head.

Seafood was excellent. Lunchtime menu has simple hearty stuff (bahn mi, fish and chips, lobster roll) etc.

Friendly service. More like you just dropped in to a buddy's place than formal dining.

My previous experience with Kenny Rogers and food was limited to his chain of chicken joints which were popular in the late 90s. This changed when I walked into Whalesbone and heard him crooning on the turntable behind the bar.

As I was drinking a local pint, eating an array of oysters and listening to Kenny's dismay about Lucille, I was feeling that life was good.

The euphoria didn't go away... more

Most of the review is look good. So we were based on those reviews to try this restaurant. But after our dinner the feeling was not very good. 1, their kitchen ventilator is not working very well, so you feel very oily smoke inside the restaurant seating area. 2, their oyster was just average, no surprise

Whalesbone never fails to deliver. Cute and cozy, friendly and knowledgable staff (Hi Eean! Thanks!), good beers and wine. Last night we brought the inlaws in from out of town here. I got food poisoning! Went to whalesbone on kent the day before Mother's Day to celebrate with my mom because I was working Sunday. It completely ruined our whole day! I had to walk out of the theater so I could go home to puke. Missed a day of work to. I work in a restaurant and Mothers Day was really busy, they had 350 people that day. May 12, 2013

The portions are very small and very expensive. I only eat sustainably caught fish so was excited to try the Whalesbone. My friend and I had to go down the street and get a pizza slice at Pizza Pizza right after we left and we are not huge eaters. Frankly it was a rip off.

Now that we've been, we don't have to go again
May 02, 2013

For more than two years, I have been agreeing to go to the Whalesbone Oyster House with my husband. For many reasons we never went - until last night. The restaurant is in an old building, very narrow and very small. Okay, it could be likened to eating in one of those 'in' places in New York City, tucked away... more

Expensive but worth it for special occasion or if you've got money to blow. Small place and reservations are a must if you want a table. Bar seats are more fun though and are 1st come 1st served. Staff goes above and beyond and they all work together to make you experience a good one. They take turns picking records to play on the old record player behind the bar....mostly upbeat jazzy blues... more

Very nice spot for lunch
April 29, 2013

The restaurant is cozy and the service is friendly. It wasn't my choice because I'm not a seafood person, but I was very happy with my meal. My family loves the oysters there. Not my thing, but rave reviews. The desserts are amazing. The space is a bit cramped, but not uncomfortably so. Many tables have a clear view of... more

Terrific Food without the stuffiness
April 22, 2013

Excellent food, service, and ambiance. Chic, gourmet, delicious food without the attitude is what we liked best. A real mix of people as well, small, cozy and loud...an oasis of life and vibrancy in Ottawa.
Will become our staple go to restaurant when we want to splurge.

Fresh
April 16, 2013

Had to wait about 30mins to get my order of oysters. I was surprised they didn't have a second person shucking.
It was worth the wait. Very fresh. They had 4 different oysters in season to choose from. We got a mix of all
The menu has a wonderful variety of flavours. Very hard to choose what to eat.

This review is for the retail store, not the restaurant. I ordered two dozen assorted oysters to bring home.

Good: Ordering is easy - I just gave them a call 2 days before and spoke to the kindly oystermonger about what I needed. No forms to fill out, no deposit needed.

Better: Service is great. We asked to have ours shucked and they were done so perfectly. Easy to transport and came placed... more

Went for a meal with colleagues, quaint eclectic setting, make reservations if you wan to get in... Very small and limited seating! 5 appetizers and 5 main dishes, loved the limited menu, pushes you out of your comfort zone! We started with an oyster plate, great presentation! And who knew single malt scotch was great sprinkled over oysters!!! I think... more

Ambiance was fantastic, service was personnel , food was amazing and original presentation, we both had the lobster and I think the combination of flavours was perfect. You won't leave hungry.

It earned its Price of $$$ but if you care more about quality and experience its a must go. Ottawa has few choices when it comes to small quality restaurants.

Oyster house that serves delicious vegetarian food
January 31, 2013

Ate here for a friend's birthday and being vegetarian I thought I was going to go hungry because there was nothing vegetarian in the menu but the chef prepared a vege dish for me that was really delicious - still salivating from the crispy chickpeas they sprinkled on my dish. I will be back for the random vege dishes they'll... more

Too big for it's britches
January 27, 2013

Got off to a bad start. My daughter, a student, called for a reservation – a Christmas present for her Dad. She was informed in a perfunctory way that a credit deposit was required; $50 if we were late arriving and $50 more if we stayed beyond two hours. And $50/head if we cancelled. When she commented that this practice... more

Great seafood! A wonderful place to share oysters and prosecco with friends
January 24, 2013

This place is a great seafood joint in Ottawa. We sat at the bar and shared a plate of oysters that were opened right infront of us and some prosecco. The bartender was great!

The best seafood in town bar none! I'm going to give it the tag of the most overpriced restaurant in town as well though. It's also gone downhill a bit from a few years ago.

I've been here on numerous occasions for the seafood and it's been always pretty good. There is one thing that I really enjoy from here and that's when they have sword fish. The thing is like a damn steak with a fin! Think... more

Been going here since it opened. It doesn't quite match the heyday of Vardy or Charlotte of late, but it's still one of the top 3 restaurants in Ottawa. Beautifully prepared fresh dishes, heavy on the seafood, but also organic and local greens and meat. I think an underrated part of their menu has always been the desserts as well and no matter how many times I have oysters in Toronto, every... more

Try to avoid giving out 5 stars unless there is a major X factor. This place is simply unique and special. The service is great and friendly, it's a great cozy ambiance, and the food is terrific. The Lobster Risotto is simply one of the 5 best things Ive ever eaten - flavors are on point, great textures, portion size and lobster. The gazpacho is also awesome as is the oysters. I love seafood! And this is the best place to have seafood in Ottawa. Even if you don't like seafood, this place is a place to eat. I had one of the most amazing brisket's ever here, it was cooked in duck fat, it was a religious experience.

Took my wife here for dinner for her Birthday. She is a huge fan of oysters, and to that end she was not disappointed. That is where the good ended.

While my wife dove in to her 18 Oysters, I had the 'Clam' Chowder. I could not detect a clam, potato or anything else that resembled what goes in a chowder. Just a creamy base with a hunk of Rye bread plopped in the middle

Our mains then came out... more

Business Description from the Web
English
August 08, 2014

Brick walls and wooden tables make for a cozy atmosphere where chefs hang out in their spare time. The rustic yet refined, sustainable, sea-to-sea menu changes daily, but oysters are a specialty (east and west coast), with different sauces and add-ons. Dubbed “the best fish in town” by Ottawa food writer Chris Knight and noted as one of enRoute Magazine’s Best New Restaurants in Canada.
