The Waverley is adorned in high Victorian style, as befits its 1866 provenance. Flamboyant playwright Oscar Wilde was a guest here in 1882, and perhaps he had a hand in the decorating scheme? There's walnut trim, red upholstered furniture, and portraits of sourpuss Victorians at every turn. Headboards in the guest rooms are especially elaborate -- some look like props from Gothic horror movies.... more
My husband and I chose to stay here as it was close to the hospital and restaurants. We were delighted with our choice and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to our friends.we'll definitely be back!
Went to Halifax for the night for our wedding anniversary. We enjoyed the Grafton Street Dinner theatre and walked from the Inn, it took about 15 mins. FREE parking as well. After we checked into the Inn we walked to the waterfront and market and stopped into a number of places.
Very pleasant stay--easy check-in, lovely room, charming, character hotel.
Pleasant old hotel. All necessary facilities available - clean with friendly and helpful staff.
Enjoyed 2 days in downtown Halifax. Hotel was very well located near major places of interest. Our room was4 levels up. No elevator so need to be fit. Good breakfast.
We stayed in the P.T. Barnum room (Barnum & Bailey fame). All antique furnishings made us feel that we had stepped back in time.
Loved the historic honey feel. No coffee in room but it was right down the hall 24/7
It was close to the event I was attending. Nice continental Breakfast buffet.
We stayed for 4 nights during a university tour of Nova Scotia and were extremely disappointed with the Inn. We would have relocated but there was little else available during the busy summer season. The rooms are crowded with bulky antiques and not terribly comfortable and not terribly clean - there were a lot of cob webs hanging from the ceiling of our second room. Breakfast was very mundane.... more
We stayed for one night in August but had also staid here a few years ago. We enjoyed our stay both times. Staff we're friendly and accommodating and the breakfast was very good.
This is a lovely hotel however our room looked a little tired and not up to expectations
Great place to do walking tours of the waterfront and downtown area. Close to shopping areas and restaurants. Lovely decor inside and out. Very complete offerings for breakfast.
We loved our stay .. beautiful rooms, walking distance to pier 21 and the harbour walk plus close to shopping and restaurants. For those that have trouble with stairs ask for a main floor room.
The Waverley Inn is ideally suited to elderly people who are nostalgic. Moderately priced, very comfortable and relaxing, it has a lovely parlour where one can converse with other travelers who have a little free time. Their spacious breakfast room is a great way to start each day. The inn's staff are very attentive and will do anything to please. All of which means that the Waverley is better... more
Great comfortable room. Facilities were suitable, location was ideal to the waterfront and the centre of town.
we have always loved staying at this hotel because we can park (free parking!) and walk every where, which is a real plus... stroll the boardwalk or up Spring Garden Road to the Public Gardens... this last trip however the full hot breakfast was not quite as sumptuous as in previous times, and I especially missed that bowl of cut fruit
Good location, within walking distance from most downtown sites and lots of good restaurants. This is a good hotel for someone who doesn't plan on spending much time at the hotel, just looking for a place to crash for the night. The bed wasn't very comfortable. We had a non-smoking room and everything was great at first but when we returned to the room later on that evening our room smelled... more
Beautiful old Victorian mansion walking distance to most of Halifax's key locations and sites. Painstakingly restored to its original glory. The rooms were comfortable, historic, clean and spacious.
A unique building with equally unique rooms and furniture. We loved the Victorian atmosphere. The Inn does not have some conveniences eg: stand alone a/c unit was a bit noisy and there are is no elevator but if you want that go to the sheraton. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Rooms were a bit small but they were laid out in the 1880's
Loved all the antiques and all the history. Staff was excellent and the breakfast was very good
Wanted to try something different from the larger chain hotels. Room was small yet quaint and very charming. Housekeeping stall kept it spotless. Free hot breakfast as well as free parking was a definite bonus.
I was only there for one night as I was visiting my son who lives in Halifax. There were a lot of great restaurants within walking distance as was the waterfront with a beautiful walkway. We also walked through the Park with gorgeous gardens. The bed was very comfortable and the room was perfect.
Stay here regularly whenever we need to go to Halifax. The decor is charming, the rooms are comfortable and the staff very gracious and attentive. Super location with several nice restaurants nearby. If you are looking for old charm this is the place.
Vanja and I enjoyed both stays at The Waverley Inn. We spent two nights there at the beginning of May, at the onset of a three week tour of the Atlantic Provinces, and two nights at the end of the three weeks. Both rooms were on the main floor. The first room was a little nicer , particularly the bathroom... more
What a great place to stay. Beautiful rooms and a great price for Halifax. So many historic figures stayed here. I was in a room Oscar Wilder stayed in. Clean and great staff. You are away from the core but a very short walk to it. Some good restaurants around it also.
Fantastic place, such decor and history! We stayed as a family of three in a two double bed room. The beds were amazingly comfortable, and the decor was gorgeous! The breakfast included was also quite good, the location is excellent, not far from Alexander Keiths, Spring Garden Road, or the waterfront. I would return for sure.
Historic and picturesque, but has been modernized over the past decade or so and for the price it's a serious bargain. Comfortable, reasonable amenities, friendly and helpful staff, and convenient parking. And right where we want to be when we go to Halifax. Breakfast, included, is okay, though we wouldn't write home about it; afternoon tea in the lobby was... more
the good - close to downtown
includes parking and continental breakfast

If you don't like chain hotels, this is the place for you. It's different and feels more personal.
The Waverley is in a great location - close to the harbour, Public Gardens and Spring Garden. There is a Superstore 2 blocks away and lots of great restaurants nearby (try the Thai restaurant across the street). The free parking was great (large lot) and the included breakfast had a good variety of fruits, breads, etc as well as hot items. Our room was comfortable but being one of the smaller... more
I stayed at the Waverley Inn and walked to a conference I was attending @ the Marriott Waterfront. The Waverley was excellent and the location was easily accessible to the conference location. Charming and warm hotel. Very welcoming, great location with free parking.
I stayed one night at the Waverley and was impressed with both the facility and the staff.
also, the breakfast buffet was disappointing, compared to the reviews that I had read on the internet.
Very nice, period decor with very comfortable bed, clean modern bathroom. Parking and good breakfast included with price. Could walk to everywhere very easily. I appreciated the tea, coffee and cookies always available in the lobby. I would stay here again.
Along a main street close to points of interest, and the waterfront, but no city noise. Amazing antiques in my room, but all mod cons in the bathroom.Good hot breakfast included.
Our recent stay at Waverley Inn was great. It is a lovely Victorian home and makes you feel like you've gone back in time with the furnishings and surroundings. It was within walking distance to the attractions we wanted to see. I would definitely stay there again.
Comfortable and convenient - right down town - the Waverley Inn is a nicely preserved piece of the city's past. The wifi, parking (a spacious lot, not a low ceilinged, cramped garage) and breakfast are all included in a price that appears to be the best available in the downtown area for accommodations of this calibre. I've stayed at most... more
This was a wonderful place to stay - This is one of those hotels where first inmpressions should be dismissed!! The inside of thisplace is fantastic. We stayed in the Oscar Wilde room, Wow! We had a really good stay here, staff were excellent in offering help, recommending places to eat and thigs to see.
Just overnight but wonderful in every respect. Close to city centre, great little pubs and an array of great places to dine.
If you like the B&B experience, there is no better place than the Waverley Inn in Halifax. We have stayed at B&B's all over Europe and honestly, the Waverley is right up there with the best of them. The service is super, the breakfast wonderful and the room very clean and comfortable. We left our IPAD charger behind in the... more

A fabulous historic inn close to the waterfront in downtown Halifax. Walking distance to the Maritime Museum, Pier 21 and Citadel Hill. Very close to some great restaurants and a large grocery store. A most pleasant accommodation steeped in Victorian charm. Beautiful antiques and appointments. Staff pleasant and helpful. Excellent central location near to the places we like to visit in Halifax. The breakfast room is down a set of fairly... more
I returned to the Waverley after not having stayed there in several years and was impressed, as always. Outstanding hot breakfast in an open room decorated with beautiful artwork. Comfortable sleeping quarters and highly attentive staff. I will return soon!
We were impressed with this little inn. Wonderful antique atmosphere with lots of character. Service was good, breakfast was above average, free parking and location were very convenient. Our room was a little small (top floor with slanty roof), but it was nicely appointed. Recommended!
I enjoyed my stay in this character rich hotel. The only downside was the lack of an elevator.
Even though this is a historic building and lots of the original features/flavor of the furnishings are there, they did a nice job of working in lots of modern, updated amenities. And the bed was super comfortable!
We always like The Waverly. Free parking and breakfast are an added bonus. The breakfasts don't seem to have the variety they had a few years ago but still good. Also having newspapers available is appreciated. We can walk to most places and always enjoy stopping off at Bearly's across the street. Our rooms are always clean. Our only complaint this time is our bed only had a table on one side.... more
Staff are friendly and helpful. The room was stunning and close to everything. Breakfast was just ok and you eat in the catacombs of the building. Coffee and treats are available all day. Pack light, you have to take the stairs.
The Waverley Hotel has an old fashioned ambience (in a very good way). It has hosted Oscar Wilde and other famous visitors to Halifax since its founding in 1876. Some even claim Wilde's ghost has been seen there (but not by me over the course of several visits). The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel is very clean and its location on Barrington St. near the VIA station puts it... more
This hotel has the best location! We walked everywhere and it was perfect. We loved our room. It was very small, but charming. Victorian decor was spot on! Loved this Inn. So historical. Decor is fantastic. All rooms have beautiful antique beds. We booked this since it is super close to the historical part of town as well as Dalhousie U. The breakfast had healthy options and better than any hotel chain. Very clean and quite.
If I was going to blow a bunch of money on a room, this would be the kind of place I would do it. One of many historic buildings in Halifax, the Waverly was the home of wealthy merchant family, the Chipmans circa 1866 until their financial demise in 1870. A pair of spinsters bought it on auction and turned it into The Waverly Hotel in 1876.

We stayed for one night before touring round NS. The staff were really friendly, very helpful, and were more than happy to supply us with local knowledge, directions and even a free map. I liked this spot. Beautiful building in a great downtown location. Walking distance from everything. Room was a but different with the sink and vanity in the room and the toilet in the bathroom, but I guess that's what you get with renovated old buildings.
Overall, the food, staff, and hotel itself was nice for a perfect east coast stay....

A very quaint spot at one end of Halifax's main street. Charming rooms with lots of antiques (the hotel was built in the 1880s so has a country inn feeling). Within walking distance of the Spring Gardens shopping district and close to some good restaurants. Definitely our new hotel of choice for Halifax. Free parking is a plus, and complimentary buffet breakfasts were very good.
We have stayed here a few times and love the ambience of the hotel. The service and the surroundings inside are quite lovely and hopefully we will continue our visits here as we love Halifax also,
If your idea of a hotel is a Ramada, you won't like this. If you want to be in a place with genuine character (and whoever's choosing all the furniture and art certainly has attitude), that's close to everything touristy (and most things business-y, too), and yet is also amongst real people, living in real 19th-century homes, then this is a grand place.
