Review from October on their older page.
Just got back from staying at the Walper for Oktoberfest in Kitchner.
When first arriving it was confusing where to park as the signs were small, but after driving by 3 times we found the lot.
We checked in and went up to our room. It was clean for the most part, but one window had the screen partially taped with scotch tape. Why not just change it?...

Weird, I thought there was another listing for this place? Anyway..
great classic hotel that's been redone for modern era. Rooms aren't incredibly pricey so I've stayed here on two business trips. The room locks are a bit janky so the key is really big and the keychain is also large. You can leave it at the front desk if you want or lug it around with you.
Rooms are large and some are bigger...

Would have been better if it weren't for the guests above us make noise all night (walking, dropping things, etc).
Found a historical spot in this old hotel. The room floor is squeaking and yet everything is great.
I was expecting a standard continental breakfast, but it turned out to be a sit down & order kind of thing. It was great to have a warm meal (sausage, eggs, potatoes). The menu also had pancakes and breakfast sandwiches (which were yummy!) Breakfast that was included was SO much better than i expected.
I had a great experience everything was excellent except for the buffet breakfast the next morning was a very lacking in food and there was been a lot of space in the dining area
Our room was a mish mash of furnishings and finishes. There wasn't any hot water in the bathroom. The heating system was poor. We did not enjoy our stay.
The stay was fine. I've stayed at the hotel many times before and probably would again. I love the bedding and the look of the old building. Love the art in the hallways. I had an exhausting day and currently there is no room service which was a bit of a downer. Things are being renovated. Breakfast and coffee was good in the morning. The room itself had a few small problems, trim coming away... more

This is our 3rd stay at this historic hotel for Oktoberfest. We love the ambiance and character of the Walper as well as the convenience of the location. We were pleasantly upgraded to a large suite due to overbooking. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The weekend breakfast buffet was delicious and we loved the freshly-baked almond croissants. We definitely recommend this hotel and will... more
Have always known about this hotel but never stayed there. It is in a very convenient location in downtown Kitchener. The old rustic and grandeur still comes through in many aspects but they have successfully done quite a bit of modernization. Although some can argue a room is a room, this place does give a feel that you are part of history.
We had the upgraded room - they have done their best with an historic hotel but it leaves a lot to be desired - not bad value for the money
Walper was built when "room with bath" had significance. Half the rooms had baths, half had to use common toilet and shower rooms at hall's end. Now rooms without baths are joined to rooms with bath as their living room. You get nice sense of space, aided by a flat-screen TV in each room. Staff was great except those serving breakfast. We picked the hotel for rave breakfast reviews but at 10:00... more
The room was small and oddly setup - slightly warm and musty smelling. This hotel is trapped in the 70's with the feel of a sophisticated road-side motel. We stayed for a wedding, wouldn't stay again except out of necessity. Parking is located in municipal lot - strange. Disappointing overall when you factor the price... The best times are passed for this relic and the prices should reflect that.
The front desk staff were extremely pleasant and helpful in all encounters, and offered good suggestions for places to eat/visit. We were upgraded to a nicer room without asking. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was quite good.
Clean, quite and comfortable bed in a older downtown building. Was a little disappointed at first with there parking. They have none, need to park around the back at public parking lot and is not included with the price of the hotel. Big rooms with kitchenette and separate living room.
Very nice quaint hotel. Very historic, good location, walking distance to many downtown businesses. The room, although recently updated, still felt a little dated. I am sure they are trying to maintain a historical presence. Neat bathroom and very old light fixtures in the room.
We had a wonderful stay at the Walper for 2 nights in July. We loved the atmosphere, the furnishings, and the surrounding area. We were able to park the car and walk to shops and restaurants, including the coffee shop attached to the Walper, great sandwiches, muffins etc, with very reasonable prices.
The staff was friendly and always helpful.

Hotels are hotels, anywhere you go they all seem similar. That's what makes the Walper interesting. Yes the building is quite old, but not old enough to be an antique feel, it still has a historic feel to it. They keep it in good condition, and have a few historical plaques around the hallways. It is also centrally located, with... more
The Walper sells itself on old world, historic charm. It wants to be a sophisticated, culturally central part of downtown Kitchener. Yes and no. Yes, it's got a great location. Yes, it's old with lots of rich, dark wood and high ceilings. My renovated room had a few old fixtures. Yes, its got a lovely cafe on the street corner.... more
When we called in for the St Mary's Hospital compassionate rate we were quoted a higher rate than we could get through Expedia. As well parking was extra although St Marys had advised it was free parking. At check out the staff did adjust our bill for this. As we are from a rual background, arriving downtown in the evening was a little unsettling as we are not used to the downtown culture and... more
The hotel has nice downtown location. The room was large and mostly well maintained. The air conditioning in our room did not work; apparently temperamental temperature controllers are an on-going issue in some rooms. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was disappointing with under cooked poached eggs and toast that was baked dry.
it was like coming home to an old relative Ihad a great sleep in a wonderful bed-everything so convenient and well laid out-my bus was 1 1/2 hours late-i had to iron and shower and get unpacked and get to blues reception-i was late for the buffet but I would have been much later whtout my booking at The Walper-and breakfast was very very comfortable-we will be back
Building in good condition. Has been updated. Staff are very friendly. Brunch was a little disappointing.
The staff were pleasant and check in/check out was very quick and painless. The room itself was good, with a comfortable bed and clean bathroom. The problems were lack of light (lamps gave off nothing and there was no overhead light), cap on volume on TV (we found a quiet channel we could barely hear over the very loud a/c) and lastly the a/c was not very good, would turn off randomly and was... more
Checked in at 815pm after booking via Expedia. Not a lot of parking available. Staff VERY helpful and told us if our room wasn't suitable to tell them (we had 5 & 3 year old with us). Room was very nice with a King bed and pullout couch but not quite enough space for the kids to sleep. They set us up in a room with 2 queens which was great. Also recommended parking just around the corner (new,... more
Opted not to stay in a chain for a change and decided on an independent downtown hotel. Great decision. Everything about the Walper was terrific. Definitely would stay there again and recommend it highly. Some street noise in the morning but it was expected since it was downtown.
Absolutely enjoyed my stay at The Walper Hotel. Staff on several occasions went out of their way to be helpful and make my stay wonderful. From the housekeeping staff who advised me on the bus routes and prices, to the front desk staff who made this a wonderful holiday and not forgetting the breakfast staff who attended to my dietary needs and made sure my coffee cup was always full. I live in Toronto with my two sons. As everybody knows it is a very busy city.Looking for an exciting but relaxing weekend we went to Kitchener to see our favourite band: Aerosmith. We had a wonderful staying at the Waller hotel. We liked everything around and we enjoyed the delicious brunch/breakfast. We hope we would be able to return next year for the music festival again. Thank you very much.
It was really nice. I didn't know the history of the hotel when we booked and am glad I was able to read about it. The staff were very friendly and accomodating.
We stayed two nights for a concert, and I guess to start the bed was a king and very comfortable! There was a keurig k cup coffee maker with cups of coffee and tea which was nice! Very clean and inviting with big windows. I would say my only negative comment would be that our room was small, the bathroom door was very large and was awkward to manuver in there. We used the valet parking and they... more
Booked a room for 4 and was pleasantly surprised by the sitting room as well as the adequate size of the bedroom.
We don't think the room hadn't been cleaned in a bit. There were dark long hairs all over the washroom, the toilet was soiled and fresh stains on the duvet. I would not stay their again. My coworkers had the same experience.
I'm satisfied during my stay there for one day. I loved the food they prepared for breakfast and the all staff were friendly.
Good service, very good breakfast, hotel needs some renovation.
Wedding venue for my son shower barely worked the ministers did not work at all it has started the renovations that are badly needed
The hotel is downtown Kitchener, and has not parking available unless you pay $20 for valet parking. You have to park down the street in public parking. It is an old hotel, which has some charms, but when you get past the front lobby and enter the hallways to the rooms and into the room, it did not have the... more
The hotel has a certain charm however this is overshadowed by excessive outside noise and malfunctioning equipment. The heat/AC system did not work optimally in either of the rooms in which I stayed despite some adjustment by hotel staff. Located in the heart of downtown, there was a lot of loud traffic noise, especially motorcycles, as well as a number of 'street people' in the area both day... more
This is an old hotel in downtown Kitchener that is undergoing renovations. My room had been renovated and was very nice. Spacious, nice bathroom and amenities, free wifi, etc. Guests should be patient since the work is still ongoing. However I do recommend it and will return. Staff were friendly and helpful.
I was so happy with the Walper Hotel. Our stay included myself and my three daughters. We had such a wonderful stay, that one of my daughters stayed one more night, with friends of hers.
First time staying at the Walper. Had previously stayed at the Delta numerous times and a few hotels further out from the core. The staff made the difference in my opinion of the hotel. They were always friendly and helpful. That isn't so easy to find these days. A few points: Do not stay on the East side of the hotel as the noise from King street is so loud and goes on almost all night that it... more
Our hallway smelled like urine, old mismatched furniture, poor service, desk wouldn't break any bills so I literally had to leave the hotel and go around the corner to buy water. Was told that although check out was at 11 you would be given a grace period. By 11:10 the concierge was giving us a hard time to check out. I was very disappointed. Also the door locks kept sticking.
My girlfriend and I attended a wedding at the Walper Hotel May 24th.
Pros:
Everything was set up beautifully and the staff and servers were very friendly.
The enterance to the area the reception was held was very well furnished and looked amazing, especially at night time.

Get your old fashion key and enjoy a great room with fridge and Kuerig coffee machine! Nice duvets and linens. Towels were very soft and bathroom was stunning. Organic soaps and shampoos. I will definitely book there again. Just walk out the door to grab a cab! Parking down the street is an extra $14.50 overnight.
We enjoyed the building, the staff were very helpful and informative. Our room was too small but in good condition and with a comfortable king sized bed. Our waitress shared some of the hotel history that we found interesting.
TV did not work in room. Asked front desk to look into it while I was at dinner. Came back to room after dinner and TV still not working. No note or voicemail from front desk. Had to call front desk again - staff member I had spoken to before went offshift - had to repack and move rooms. Very inconvenient.
Decent hotel, rooms could have been bigger though. No parking included either
The Walper is one of those mildly run-down 19th century North American hotels that I usually appreciate much. It is surely a charming place, even if not in the best of all shapes. It makes a point of having been freshly redecorated in the 80ies, but then, this was not exactly yesterday. Obviously, a good feeling for style was not... more
It was very enjoyable! The room was beautiful and was located in downtown Kitchener where there are lots of places to go! They were clean and my room had a modern but historic look. There was also a Keurig coffee brewer in the room. The service at the front desk was very helpful when I asked them various questions about the hotel, parking, and the surroundings. The one criticism would be that... more
Hotel well past its prime. Rooms have cracked ceilings and plumbing that does not work well. Street noise and adjacent room noise a big problem. Beds were ok. Room rate higher than newer and nicer hotels closer to our venue. As well, parking is an additional $14.50 a night. I will not be returning to this hotel. On the plus side, the hotel bar, below street level, offered both excellent service... more
If you enjoy a place with alot of history this is your hotel. Built in 1896 it has a great story of having hosted Prime MInister and various other famous people. Overall I enjoyed staying in a older hotel, it has been well kept, however the standard room is a tad... more

I have learned that I should ALWAYS check on Trip Advisor before booking a hotel! I went on someone's recommendation that this was an OK hotel close to the function I was attending. I think it would be best to list my complaints in point form:

It was okay. One elevator was not working and the dining room is hard to fnd. The rooms are old fashioned which we liked. Our room was spacious and had a small kitchen.
The staff were pleasant and check-in was efficient. That's where the good ends. I stayed at this hotel because it was close to a client that I was visiting and saw that it had a 3.7 - 4.0 rating on most review sites. I'm not sure how it achieved that rating though, since the rooms look like they haven't been updated since the 70s. The pipes rattle when you run the shower and the walls must be... more
Had meeting close to hotel by which the placement of hotel made it easy to get to.
First, there are no security cameras anywhere. So, at 11pm, 12am, 1am, 2am, etc., when a creepy looking man that turned out to be with a traveling music show, but did not speak English, kept banging on my door and calling, the hotel "security" would get there 10 min later, but did not actually run into them til about 4am. THEN, I get back and my bill is (still) completely messed up. Charged me... more

The location is OK. But the hotel is really old. Rooms have only air conditioner heating / cooling that runs every few seconds. Had to turn it off in order to get to sleep. I stayed here on a business trip in January. My group was obviously given the unrenovated rooms, as we all reported the same problems in the morning. The Walper is teeming with history. No, it may not be the best hotel for business travellers, and no, it may not have the highest-quality of amenities. I really wanted to like this place because it is historic and it has a beautiful exterior. They state on their website that the hotel was renovated in 2011. It would be easiest for me to sum this up by room:

Many of these reviews describe the hotel as charming. You might agree, but only if your idea of a pleasant night's stay involves sleeping in an incredibly outdated, cramped, paper-thin-walled hotel room. I found that the Walper had little value or comfort to offer me as guest.
