We planned a stop to see the murals, but we also found a really great place for lunch.
I had the mulligatawny soup (never heard of it) wow....you gotta try it.
The peanut butter cookies were also very good.
I had not been in Chemainus for many years and wanted to take a break during my explorations earlier today. I found Utopia in an alley off Willow Street and parked in front of a mural. I ordered a roast beef sandwich on rye and a coffee; the coffee was superb and the sandwich was a delight. The waitress and... more
Friendly, place with decent sandwiches. Big plus for me – peanut butter cookies!. Could use more seating. Have fun getting your picture taken with the First Nation sculptures.
Best pastries in town, and good to have lunch in such a beautiful place. I ordered my lunch and waited before got it, but the waitress said they were at rush time. Later the owner came to us, said sorry, and gave us a piece of brownie for free!
We went to this bakery a number of times during our stay near Victoria. The trip here was worth it! The bread was always fresh and wonderful, and the goodies in the display case could never not catch my eye! Well worth a visit. Plus you can look around the cute town at all the murals.
We went around 1:30 PM before seeing the play there. The food was delicious, but the service was disappointing. The management of work could be improved since our meals were overdue and we felt an attitude problem coming from the workers. Not only that, they mixed our meals from one another, so in the beginning, we were eating the wrong... more
Strongly recommend Baguette and a lot other pastries. All handmade and of guaranteed quality. A must-go place in Chemainus.
Greeeeaaaaat food! Nice staff and many parking space available. The cookies and pastries are soooo delicious! Must go when visiting Chemainus!
We were lucky enough to get here on a Thursday when they serve their most popular soup...mulligatawny. I am a soup connoisseur and this was by far, the best mulligatawny I've ever had. And the service! They gave us a sample of the soup, then they saved us 2 bowls for after the theatre performance, then offered us more free... more
I know I should not eat as much bread as I do, but when it is as tasty and fresh as Utopia's Cranberry pecan sourdough, I cannot help myself. Sorry Mom, but this is the best bread I have ever eaten. Mom's oatmeal molasses buns come second.
We had a lovely light lunch here. We sat outside on the veranda and watched the world go by. We had some great home made tomato and basil soup with the cafe's home baked, melt in the mouth, croissants . We indulged ourselves further with their hot sausage rolls which were just as delicious and finally managed an apple puff... more
Great gluten free bread and pastries. Also able to order a Dozen loaves at a time and can preorder cakes too.
Called in for lunch. Was really impressed with not only the variety of food to choose from but that it was baked fresh on site. My husband and I shared a sandwich and each of us had a cake they were delicious.
This is a great little gem in Chemainus for soup lovers. For under 5 dollars you can get a delicious home-made soup and bread rolls.
Our favourite: mulligatawny Thursdays with sour dough rolls.
We actually just dropped in here for a loaf of bread -- which was very good -- but the site has much more going for it than sandwich material.
You can get a very decent cup of coffee there, some of the cakes are delicious, snacks abound and the whole atmosphere is one of relaxation amid the aroma of bread...

Wonderful bakery selections, especially if you love almond flavoured or marzipan goodies this is the place to go. To many scrumptious items to choose from, such a problem, eh? coffee was very good.
After an early morning rise and a tour of the famed Chemainus wall murals my wife and I, having become accustomed to the local periodical "coffee fix" called in to this unasuming little shop where we had the most delicious coffee at the most reasonable price of our 28 day tour of Canada and Alaska. Relaxing with our coffee at... more
First thing first, they have the best iced Chai! Stopped here with family while exploring the area and very happy we did! Wonderful bakery with a great selection of goods as well as lunch menu. Everything is fresh and you can tell! Would highly recommend to everyone. Service was a bit slow but there were a lot of people and... more
Great breads and a wide array of cookies and cakes all baked in the Dutch tradition for your eating enjoyment.
Lunch consists of sandwiches and soups made to order from fresh ingredients and not fast food. Great service.
Extremely friendly service and excellent quality of pastries and bread. We came there by chance during the afternoon in order to have a snack. My husband had the best (freshly made) sandwich ever (cheddar turkey on whole meat bread). And I enjoyed a delcious pancake. Don't miss this bakery whenever you visit Chemainus!
We arrived at the bakery past 6pm and disvocered that it was closed already when someone frome the parking lot walked towards us. It was the owner of the bakery who had seen us standing at the door. He reopened the shop especially for us again though we told him that we only need a little bread. We were impressed... more
Although we have visited Chemainus on several occasions, we have never visited this bakery/restaurant before. It is located about 1/2 block off the main shopping street so is not highly visible but is worth searching out. They have delicious breads and pastries which make for a great lunch or snack. All sandwiches are freshly made with your choice of meats... more
Finally, gluten free bread that is soft and delicious....and so many varieties. We've tried them all. European style Utopia Bakery and Cafe also bakes up delectable goodies. Gluten free and regular. Such a treat to find this place. Be sure to check it out when you're in the area. The staff are amazing too. So friendly and warm.
I have been frequenting this shop for over two years. The daily fresh breads from victorian, sesame seed, cardamom melt in the mouth. The pasteries are a variety one will find no where else on the island like marizpan delights. Besides the above the one of the greatest assets this shop offers are gluten free pasteries that compair to no... more
I have been to that bakery in Chemainus and it the quality of the food is very good
I think it does very well and lots of people seem to shop there too...
We always visit that bakery.
Make sure you go to this wonderful bakery in Chemainus. They have everything from the best cup of coffee in town to gluten free and normal bakery items. Amazing bread. Most delicious croissants and great coffee. Wonderful oasis while travelling the back roads of the coast.
Kees & Wendy Docter run Utopia Bakery Cafe, where fresh Baked Bread, Pastries and Cookies
are created the Europian way. Also their Cafe Menu has a taste of Holland in it, try the Dutch Pancakes or Bouncer. Also the have a nice soup on every day. Open 7 days a week 6 to 6
We parked at the North End of Chemainus near the grocery store, and decided we 'd walk until we found a restaurant we wanteto try. Well, Utopia was the first stop, and we decided it had everything we could possibly want: clean, delicious rye bread, great soup and sandwich, and if we bought coffee or tea, a free cookie. We... more
This is a must if you are in Chemainus and want to stop for a snack or have a craving for european style pastries. Staff are friendly and there's a small outdoor area to sit and have a coffee.
Busy place reasonably priced and top quality product!
Real sour dough and excellent Dutch baked treats. Had a very nice lunch with a great conversation on organic grains with the chief baker. What a nice surprise find this place is. Loved the Olie Bollen.
Best gluten free bread ever and their turnovers are to die for! They also have the best multi grain bread I have ever tried. Mmmm
Chewy crust, rich, yeasty, soft, flavorful inside.. Warm their baguettes, or sourdough or any unsliced loaf in a hot oven, and serve this crusty bit of utopia to your forever impressed and grateful family and guests.
We first experienced Utopia at the Cedar Farmers Market. We are still there every Sunday to buy their breads. We stopped off with family at the bakery itself and everyone had a great lunch. From their soup to their sandwiches and over course their desserts..YUM!
Best bakery ever. Breakfast there everyday during our stay in July
Though Utopia Bakery is off to the side, it is a wonderful bustling bakery AND coffee shop. The outside porch is screened with plexiglass for protection from street noise and wind off the ocean. The coffee is wonderful and the scent of freshly baked bread is...well scrumptious doesn't do it justice....it is one of the best combinations in the area
I have traveled all over the world and honestly feel that this is one of the top few bakeries I have been to. Amazing selection, high quality, nice vibe, great prices, friendly service. I think it is run by a Dutch couple who moved to Chemainus. It's a real gem on Vancouver Island.
This is an amazing bakery and cafe. The baked goods are just so great I had to go buy a cooler so I could fill it up and take it home with me. The customer service was awesome, we where welcomed with smiles and so much help with all my questions. We even sat down at the tables they had... more
