The Grilled Cheese in Kensington Market has taken a simple concept, perfected it and unleashed it on the neighbourhood at just the right time to capitalize on the mass patio exodus that fall instigates. The Grilled Cheese serves variations on traditional plain grilled cheese and nothing but (save for an accompanying daily soup). Their menu ranges from the basic 'Classic' grilled cheese which... more
stumbled across this small restaurant while visiting a family member in a nearby hospital. Doesn't look like much from outside but the food is so good. A number of great choices on the menu and I had a hard time deciding on what to order. Don't let the outside fool you they know how to make a great grilled cheese.
Little more than a shack in the funky Kensington Market area of Toronto this place sells the best grilled cheese sarnies around, you have got to try it, by the way you can have them brought to you at the bar across the street, it's called Ronnie's I think.
Big time follower of YOU GOTTA EAT HERE and I've been pretty happy with most of his eatery reviews. Today DID NOT disappoint!!!!
I won't repeat what people have said as this being a terrific place for a niche clientele and I am so happy to be part of that group!!!! (Although I will take a bit off the top...

Yes, a grilles cheese only restaurant. We were introduced to this restaurant by a tour guide ans it was the most unique place we ate while there. The building itself looks like it is about to fall down ( it isn't), the location is right near the busy area, and the varieties of grilled cheese sandwiches you could choose from... more
The Grilled Cheese is a simple, small restaurant that serves a very specific product to a niche demographic: Those who want high-end grilled cheese sandwiches. The menu offers a few variations — different spreads, meats, perhaps some spinach or mushrooms — but otherwise sticks to the basics. As a result of this focus, the accompanying sides (potato chips and a pickle)... more
Located on a quiet street across from a neighbourhood bar, the Grilled Cheese had a wide range of options to serve any pallet. The food was reasonably priced and the service was very quick. They had a selection of meats, cheeses, and vegetables that went into the sandwiches. There was outdoor seating available at picnic tables, and tables inside. The... more
Located off a quieter street in Kensington, the Grilled Cheese is hard to miss with its huge sign and out of place log cabin exterior. Their menu consists of 12 different combinations, but they also offer add-ons such bacon, ham, eggs, etc. to allow you to customize sandwiches to your taste. Even the most significant sandwich, the Beast, will only... more
Great classic grilled cheese and other creative sandiwiches with grilled apples, avocado, spinach extra. reasonably priced with potatoes chips and pickles. I personally don't like the pickles, too sour for me. There less than a dozen choices. You can easily pick what you like and everything is tasty.
We stopped at this little 'restaurant' during a visit to Kensington on a bright sunny spring day. They offer only grilled cheeses sandwiches and have some very interesting combinations. I enjoyed the one with avacados. I have to compliment the young owners who have tried hard to give this little place a unique feel in its décor and for creating... more
Cheese toasties seem an afterthought on the menus of the few places that even offer them - usually greesy spoon diners and that sort. Not here.
As the name suggests this is the one and only item offered - although in many different forms. There is a selection of about a dozen sandwiches, each with a different combination of cheeses...

Saw this joint on 'You gotta eat here' and finally tried it out. I ordered the Apple Crisp (cheddar, caramelized apples and red onions, avocado). It was superb. Cheese melted perfectly. Not overly buttered. Perfect size of chips and pickle to accompany. I did not feel too full afterwards, nor was I left hungry. I was nicely sated.
My slight...

With all the eclectic places to eat in Kensington Market this just adds to this great neighborhood. What a delight to have the mushroom grilled cheese....even with the slightly stale potato chips. Quite filling and the best meal to have when you need some fantastic comfort food.
Highly recommend this fun little spot!
Had the grill worx. It wa awesome and the added pickle was a nice touch. The peppers cheese and spinach were totally made for each other and the bread was toasted well with no aftertaste.
They add rippled chips on the side in red plastic baskets.
The decor was filled with old preserves. Menu choice was adequate.
Service was good....

Was excited to try The Grilled Cheese after hearing about it from "You Gotta Eat Here". Typical grilled cheese sandwich with special toppings. It was made well and tasted good, but don't think I'll be returning any time soon since it's pretty expensive for a grilled cheese sandwich ($7-12). I had the Apple Crisp and it was cheddar cheese with... more
The Grilled Cheese is a foodie stop in Toronto for sure. The unique flavour combinations offered on primarily grilled cheese makes for a conversation starter. The small intimate setting in Kensington Market makes the Grilled Cheese a spot for foodie and hipsters alike. The rustic cottage-like feel makes the warm comfort food of the grilled cheese very appropriate. The menu... more
It's not amazing and it is not terrible.
If you want to try a unique, over-priced grilled cheese sandwich served with a side of store brand potato chips then this is the place for you.
I found nothing special about this place, nor did my brother or my father. The food is good, but I wouldn't eat there again. I...

Had lunch at the Grilled Cheese today. The best grilled cheese I've ever had. Had the apple crisp. I can tell you it sounds weird but it was amazing. Added avocado. Comes with potato chips and a pickle. My husband had the Grill works (I think) he really liked it also. We split a generous portion of homemade soup too.... more
My husband and I saw this restaurant on the Food Network's 'You Gotta Eat Here', so we did! I wanted the Mushroom grilled cheese with their olive pesto and tomato and apparently I ordered the Black Jack! It was very good. I would have been happy with even the plain old grilled cheese. The place is very very small, and... more
Saw this place on "you gotta eat here" and tried it. So good! I had a menu item an soup and friends had the special of the day. All delicious!
I recently saw an episode of "You Gotta Eat Here!" After seeing the episode I had to try it out! It was as good as it looked on TV! The place is nothing to look at-- a true hole in the wall! It has wooden benches and a wall of jarred preserves for decoration. There were two guys only that... more
This place is very small. I hesitate to even call it a restaurant. Grilled cheese sandwiches are the only thing on the menu and they have some pretty boring options. I happened to order the most expensive sandwich and was not impressed. Seem to be cooked so long to melt the cheese, that the bread is hard as a rock.... more
I learned about The Grilled Cheese while watching one of those Food Network shows. I was heading to Toronto so my husband and I said, why not? We went on a holiday Monday around 2p and it was packed! I got the classic (grilled Cheddar cheese sandwich) while my husband got his classic with bacon. Both sandwiches came with chips... more
Me and my mom shared 2 of the types of grilled cheese! So delicious and cozy! Very hot in the place tho until they opened up the garage window thing. Strongly suggest buying the one with the olive pesto... Mmmmmm

If you like grilled cheese sandwiches, this is definitely a place worth trying. I ate here with two of my friends and we all got the Blackjack which had olive tapenade, spinach and other delicious toppings on it. It had a nice, quirky atmosphere and we liked how it was so open. It's nothing fancy but it really hit the... more
But then, they are actually grilling & making your GC from scratch.
Awesome! Would also be more than awesome in the summer when they open the garage style windows onto the street. They also have a nice arrangement with the pub across the road where you can enjoy your beer at the pub's open patio while chewing on your delicious...

We were very hungry when we came into the Grilled Cheese. I was excited because I love grilled cheese sandwiches and variations are always welcome.
However, I had a not-so-great visit for 2 reasons. The first is that this establishment is cash only. They have an ATM, which I'm kicking myself for being ill-prepared for that, that charges a $2...

Cute little rustic Grilled Cheese cafe with awesome grilled cheese at a reasonable price.
I got the Mushroom Madness and added bacon which was huge and melty-amazing.
I really wanted Tomato soup with it, but the soup of the day was potato leek. There should Always be tomato soup to go with grilled cheese, people! it's a MUST!

The most basic and easiest comfort food is grilled cheese. This place makes you feel like you are at home. The only difference is someone besides your Mom is making the grilled cheese for you. No Kraft Singles here!!!! I had the "Mushroom Madness" with bacon. FANTASTIC! Maybe I am biased as we (the family) took a stroll through Kensington... more
Wen went to this restaurant on a really hot day in July which was not a good idea. This is winter food--hot, heavy and really filling. It was super busy so we shared an outside picnic table with too many other people. The service was S-L-O-W. The food once it arrived was good but we quickly realized it was inappropriate... more
