Great location over looking the lake.
The restaurant had a nice decor and ambience. We were seated right away and given menus. At initial glance, I noticed that their prices for their main dishes were very expensive!! My friend and I ordered the butter chicken ($18), rice (4.90 x 2) and paratha ( $2-3).
As we were waiting for our meal we noticed that they microwaved our rice before serving it...

This place is better than a lot of Indian places in Toronto. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Next time we do Indian in Barrie, we try Spice and compare. Portions were also generous, I had enough leftovers to make lunch for myself (well, I had to make a bit of rice).
Very popular as tons of ppl called and picked up from here. Quiet, even with several tables of people on a Sunday evening....

1. Excellent service
2. Amazed to find such a good selection of vegetarian food in Barrie
3. Great portion size.
4. Lovely peaceful environment to eat
If I could ask one thing.. put a non alcohol beer on the menu! There are so many to pick these days all will go well with a curry....

Service, food, drinks and atmosphere are simply amazing. I have been on a couple occasions and have never been disappointed. Brought some friends in for a nice dinner and we all had a fantastic time. Chicken tikka masala is my favourite so far!
My husband and I had our first experience with this wonderful restaurant a couple of weeks ago. We will definitely go back...The Service was above and beyond and the food was incredible! So good, soo much and reasonably priced! If you are in Barrie and you love Indian Cuisine...Go to TARA
My wife and myself read so much about this restaurant that we went there for our anniversary.
We have eaten at many different Indian restaurants so we are not new to the food so...
We started by ordering 2 papadums and 1 order of Onion Bhaji. We received 1 papadum and 6 Bhajis. I mentioned to the waiter that we...

If you aren't a regular you won't get very good service. My fiancé and I tried it for the first time because there was a wagjag and I have to tell you... The food was good but it was not worth the high prices and the slow and not very friendly service. It cannot be blamed on the dinner rush... more
Apart from good location and food, everything is bad service is the worst with rude staffs, and it's costly
I had various bad experiences with this reastuarant, i usually avoid going with family or client and have stopped going myself as well. I still remember at one instance i complianed about the uncooked biryani and the staff started arguing &...

I have been to this restaurant many times over the last 17 years, the same owners have always been there and the food is good, you can easily go wrong with Indian food but these guys know how to prepare it, you won't get the same quality any where outside of Toronto. Don't know what all the bad reviews are... more
We had heard so much about this restaurant, and as we love Indian food, made it a special occasion night a while back. The restaurant is tiny, cramped and uncomfortable. It was a cold night, we were seated near the door, and we nearly froze to death. Our server was hurried and verging on rude and honestly, we HATED our... more
Have to say the Lunch special is wonderful . lots of variety stacks of fresh hot bread baked in the old way , both spiced dishes traditional flavors as well as mild .

Love the chicken korma, chicken dhansak, seekh kebab and vegetable samosa. Worth every penny you pay here. Flavour of the food here keeps me coming back.
Tara is an authentic Indian cuisine restaurant and I had the misconception that their treatment would also match the authentic Indian Values, but sadly they didn't, I had the most unfortunate experience when I visited this place in the second week of January.
The buffet food was not ready although they knew that we were expected, their excuse was they...

It was such a total let down. Given its in one of the best restaurant in Barrie you expect the quality of food and service to be good! However my experience was the staff to be extremely rude. The quality of the food average. I ordered vegetable samosas for a starter. Very dry indeed with no chutney or accompanying sauce... more
Visited this place first weekend of January 2014 with another couple based on reviews in Trip Adviser. I wanted to surprise my girlfriend with good Indian Cuisine. "Surprised" I was with waiting for over an hour to get seats and table not cleaned. It took a further 10 minutes for the waiter to come and clean our table. We noticed... more
Tried this place again and they again jacked up the prices. Wow. Moreover, you will get wayyyy better service if you are a man (ie: you will be called "boss" over and over) however if you are a woman you will be overlooked. Disgustingly high prices. And if you use a tiny wagjag and still spend $70 the owner looks... more
The word "Tara" in hindi means a star. This place was far from being a star. Rude manager, rude server. Dont have words to describe how they screwed our afternoon.
We had reservations at Tara for 12 people; guess what - the table wasnt ready when we got there. After we passed through the confusion of setting up a table...

I am writing to air my complaints about the very poor service that I received at your resturant, Tara, on the 18th of January in regards to the staff's and the manager's attitude and lack of communication which have spoiled our high expectations of your resturanat and eventually spoiled the afternoon for our special occasion.
First of all, we were...

This is one of my family's favorite places to eat!! We have been eating at the Tara for over 10 years and the services is great and the food is truly amazing. We usually get the Butter Chicken, Beef Curry, Lamb Vindaloo, Palao Rice, and Nan Bread.
I have eaten in many Indian restaurants all over the world and Tara definitely holds their own with the best. It has a really nice ambiance and the selection of food is broad. I haven't had anything in their restaurant that I didn't like and, although it is a tad expensive, you at least know you are not gambling with... more
small packed restaurant. I liked the chicken biriyani and the butter chicken. will definitely return on my way back up to Barrie
Their butter chicken is the best I've ever had. The service is mediocre and is a little overpriced but the food is amazing. Best in Barrie for Indian cuisine!
I was there on opening night many years ago and continue to be blown away by the delicious flavours that come from the talent in the kitchen! People often brag that they know the best spot for good Indian food- but I have yet to find one that compares- even remotely- to Tara.
They may want to be careful that...

Good indian food on Dunlop. The service was excellent. I had the lamb karma medium-hot (and it was hot!!!) and my friend had the butter chicken. My only complaint is the price as it is quite steep for Indian food. One beer, one bottle of wine (36$), pakoras for appetizer, no desserts, our two dishes were 113$ before tip....

We had not been dining out in Barrie because we had a summer full of house guests and barbeques. Last weekend we went back to Tara, always a favorite spot for us. We have been coming back for more than 10 years.

We happened on Tara while spending the week- end in Barrie. We had driven past our initial choice, a very, very busy Chinese buffet and decided instead to go back downtown where we had passed Tara earlier in the day.

Recommended and I've been there a few times with no problems at all. One of my favorite Indian restaurants.
I have tried many other Indian restaurants as I travel around Southern Ontario, but Tara always ends up being my favourite. Great onion bhajis, butter chicken, chicken korma and sag aloo. I am allergic to peppers and my sister doesn't like coconut, but they make our food individually, so we can both enjoy it.
You have to go for the "slow" food here, like the stews fall off the bone tender, that sort of thing... lamb was fab, even if you don't like lamb, there's no gamey here.
Don't go for the typical Indian food stuffs at this place...
It's an authentic Indian restaurant... *not a "Canadian/Indian" restaurant.

Delicious food but the price for take out is outrageous. I recently had the Chef's Special for 2 delivered to my home and I think it will be my last time. Have always enjoyed my meals at Tara. The lunch buffet has a nice assortment for the price and the dinner menu has a wonderful assortment of Indian items. They are very friendly and such a bright place to enjoy a meal right in downtown Barrie.
I first started buying onion bhaji's, naan bread, and curry dishes from Yar and Noor back in 1994. their cooking is fantastic, their Naan bread is exceptional. Butter chicken is to die for. Tara's been around a long time because it consistently serves up excellent food. Since all food is prepared fresh, they will custom add/subtract ingredients and adjust spicing to your taste.
Not inexpensive, but worth every penny.
Went on a Tuesday night and the place filled up pretty quickly. The service was attentive, and the food was quite good. Shared the appetizer platter and that was tasty. What a great gem in downtown Barrie. I went based on a recommendation from a local. Fantastic food. Quick and efficient service. Incredible value.
I went here with my husband and ordered Butter Chicken and Naan bread, there were very few pieces of chicken and the service was below average. Way too expensive for the value.
Have been going to Tara for about 20 years, mostly for lunch, owners are always friendly and welcoming......food is always very good but somewhat costly
best bang for your buck is the lunch buffet, excellent!
Long time Indian restaurant in Barrie. They were the first and are still the best. The owners are great and have provided a great atmosphere.
Tara is on a street corner, close to Lake Simcoe and close to a digestive walk along the shore, should you want one after your visit. It's menu has improved considerably to include a variety of regional Indian dishes (as gas as I can tell) and flavors. Don't ask for "hot" unless you want Indian-hot, this from someone who has... more

The cost for two adults, including sodas was $ 75.00 before tip. The location was great, on the main street into Barrie downtown. Enjoy, enjoy !!!!!
I have visited this restaurant on a number of occasions and without a doubt it is a favorite. The quality of the food is superb, the decor very comfortable and the price quite reasonable. The benchmark for Indian food in Barrie, Ontario. Nothing better.
The best Indian food in town. Yummy. Never disappointed. I even get take out if I need a fix.
I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, but when I can find some good dishes I am a happy guy. This place is considered to be one of the better Indian joints in town and I was pretty happy with the meal.
