The food is always good, but you gotta be patient if you're ordering take out. Make sure you check your order before you leave because they're notorious for screwing it up. They don't even apologize or offer up a freebie if they make an obvious mistake! You're better off to eat in or check your order first.
Sun Sushi is quite possibly the best sushi in town! It never disappoints!
Although the restaurant wasn't full (maybe 7-10 tables) we must have caught our server on a bad night. She was abrupt and borderline rude when taking our order. Service aside, the food is fantastic and there is definitely something for everyone.
Your best bet is to order take out and enjoy from the comfort of home!
The sushi here is definetly great, although it is a little pricy compared to sushi places in montreal toronto and Vancouver, but for what we have acess to here in town it does the job! I come here as often as possible to cure my sushi cravings!
This is by far the best sushi i have enjoyed in St. John's. they have a few nice wines to enjoy with fantastic sushi variety.

I would give 1 1/2 starts, so I was nice in giving 2. If you have been to Japan or even reading Japanese food found in Vancouver/Toronto, your going to be very disappointed. I can cook more traditional Japanese food from home. Very limited in things, and nothing like real Japanese foods. Great for people who never had real Japanese flavours, as it is very westernised. As for me, I expected more... more
Came back for some sushi as I had a hankering for some. I asked the server what were the most popular rolls and she mentioned the spicy tuna. So I ordered a spicy tuna, spicy salmon and a rainbow roll. All were okay for my expectations. I'll be honest with you, I'm not a sushi snob, okay maybe I'm a bit spoiled as my level of measure is Vancouver and Toronto sushi.
Sushi is okay, not wow...

We technically wanted to have more seafood (well, sushi could be it?) in Newfoundland, but we tried Sun Sushi anyway. Food was ok, the salmon scallop roll is really yummy but it took them really long to get us the food. If you are starved, don't come here. Tea was good too. Might come back... more
We were there in July 2014, for dinner on a Friday night. It was very busy. Still we were brought a menu and then a bowl of soup fairly rapidly. Our sushis took longer. At one point, we realized that people who came to pick up sushis did not seem to wait much. We asked our server and she explained... more
Yes, the menu does look like as if it offers Japanese food but the servings have nothing of the refinement and clarity typical of Japanese cuisine. The salmon sashimi was fine but the tuna was tasteless and had to be served seared. We inferred after a conversation with our waiters that they couldn't serve the tuna raw because the fish... more
This is not quite the worst sushi and sashimi I have ever had, but close. The tuna has to be seared as it can't be obtained fresh, the shrimp were tasteless, and processed fish was used. The rice was tired. Accompanying friends had the chef's special roll that looked interesting but was coarse and very confused, exhibiting none of the... more
Quick service. Decent prices. Food was tasty. For the price, pretty good sushi! We will definitely return.
Grabbed a takeout. It was ready within ten minutes. As others have noted, the atmosphere is lacking, but I was not staying, so it was not an issue. I ordered a veggie meal. While it was decent, it was not more that that. I wish there was something between average and very good as that is how I would rate... more
Friendly and laid-back atmosphere. Fresh sashimi. We also tried their soft shell crab roll and St. John's s roll and were all done well. Good place to go if you are craving sushi while in St. John's!
Had a decent meal here. Enjoyed the sushi rolls and beef teriyaki. Service was attentive. Will be back to try more items on the menu.
Sun Sushi is one of my favorites in St. John's, have been going since 2005. My favorite roll (of all time) is the Gold Casino, its delicious, huge and filling. Very big menu with all your staples, complimentary miso soup. Service is sub par a lot of the time and the place needs some decorations (it has an empty feel)... more
The sushi is really good, no complaints about the food. The menu has a great selection; it's a book. The restaurant is in a strip-mall, and is a big room, but it is pretty empty. There are numbers over the tables, which really takes away from being personable. The music they play must be from some kids ipod, because there... more
Always a favorite, Spicy tuna roll and Golden Casino roll for the beginner sushi enthusiast is recommended!
There is very little in the way of sushi in St. John's. Surprisingly, Sun sushi still manages to do a decent job considering the lack of competition and small market. The salmon is superb, very fresh and while I suspect flash frozen product has to be used for some of the other seafood, the flavour and quality is still decent.... more
Portobello's was fully booked the night that I was staying at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland, and so I wandered into Sun Sushi instead. I really wish this place would listen to reviews (not just this site) and work on the customer service. I must be honest and rate this place an average. The sushi was pretty good, but that was about it.
The atmosphere was alright.
Servers were friendly and helpful, even if they got our order wrong. They at least got it resolved.
All in all, decent meal out, but a little bit of a let down.
I went to Sun Sushi yesterday evening with a few friends and I had a wonderful experience! It was my first time in the restaurant and my second time having sushi. We picked this restaurant because we were starving, it was late, and we figured that you really can't mess up sushi too bad. We were wrong. I have read mixed reviews of this place and had more concerns with slow service when in fact it is the food quality that people should be concerned with. The sushi is terrible. Always great service and consistently good food. Parking is always difficult around this place but worth the effort.
Love the food and the clientele makes it an interesting spot to be; even though the service is hit-or-miss we go back again and again. A new favorite.
I've eaten sushi on all my travels. which have reached as far as Hawaii, a great place for sushi! Guess what, Sun Sushi; beat that! Best of all my travels. For price and quality
Personally, service usually makes or breaks an experience, and the service here is always slow and fairly inattentive.
I'm a vegetarian, so I can't speak about the quality of the fish, but their vegetable tempura rolls are alright, and their avocado rolls have a lot of avocado, so that's good. Vegetable quality can vary though, as it's hard to get decent greens on the island.
Title says it all about the food, however, the service is deplorable. Miso soup brought promptly, but waited 15 min before the server came to take our drink order. No gluten free soy sauce and, I didn't think this was possible but their wasabi was literally NOT HOT!
I ate there twice, once with family and then with a friend. Both times the service was bad. Didn't get a smile from anyone there once.
The first time we were ignored the whole while we were eating. We had to grab another waiter and ask for refills of water.....we were all empty....and you know how thirsty sushi makes people....

I've been to Sun Sushi many times and have never left disappointed.
This restaurant was reasonably priced but you certainly got what you paid for. The sushi rice was falling apart and the rolls were very loose. Considering that there are less than a handful of sushi options in St. John's, I would go back but with limited expectations... more
I’m very surprised by all of the negative reviews on here. My boyfriend and I have been there 7-8 times in the past year and it’s always been great. The service has always been fast, and the sushi is always amazing. I have to admit that the servers often seem distracted and are not always super friendly when it’s busy, but I’m fine with that as long as I get my food promptly.
Just paid $21.00 (tax in) for a teeny tiny spicy tuna roll (6.99) and the delicious (but still overpriced at 12.99) palm spring roll. Might I suggest a more reasonable $4.99 for those teeny tiny spicy tuna rolls, and $8.99 for the palm spring? Seriously – I’m still quite hungry. We pay wayyy too much for things like this here in St. John’s. Although come to think of it I could have stuffed my... more

My daughter and I love sushi so for a treat we headed here for lunch. There aren't too many places in St John's that provide this.

Amazing food! Salmon scallop roll is to die for! We will go again when we visit St Johns in the future. Good job guys and gals!!
We were so happy to find this restaurant, just wish we'd found it earlier in the vacation. Very tasty food, good service, good for our kids, comfortable atmostphere. Great value compared to prices in sushi restaurants in Ontario, and food just as good. Lots of non-sushi options too, which were also tasty from what we had.
The service can be sketchy at times, but the prices are good and the food is always consistently delicious!
It is a shame that Sun Sushi has no reasonably priced competition in St. John's. This is probably due in part to raw fish not being compatible with... more
Their sushi has gotten smaller. This was the case about a month ago, but then decided to give it another chance. No, it’s not very good value.
Can’t say I’ve actually eaten there, but I saw the sign claiming “sushi and bubble tea” and was so excited. I love bubble tea, and previously thought that there was no place in town to get it. We had the chicken rice bowl, which had a total of 4 thin slivers of chicken in it. Save your money and go elsewhere... This place served us a roll with Jumbo Shrimp, and we could barely see the shrimp inside. I ordered a spicy salmon roll at Sun Sushi to go in March 2012. A few hours after eating my supper I experienced the WORST food poisoning of my life. I was sick for 3 days and I missed out my birthday celebrations. I will not be going back here anytime soon. Beware!
tried this place several times. Only once was I pleasantly suprised nothing was bad. Bad customer service, the fish is usually frozen (yes, frozen ... you bite through ice crystals)
:)
I have had sushi from several different restaurants in Canada and the US and have always found Sun Sushi the best yet. The spicy tuna is my favorite.
Wonderful evening, simple atmosphere, very fast service. Great food!
Maybe one thing to check into: The room was quite cold and drafty, not very pleasurable for a longer meal.
I eat sushi regularly around Toronto. Not only do the servers operate a flawed process, and got my order wrong, but I spent $50 between two people and still are nowhere close to full. Unorganized, loud and overpriced. Servings are half the size of any other sushi place I have tried, and the food comes out looking nothin like it... more
Typical sushi selections with vegetarian options. Just ask and they will let you know if you have specific concerns on ingredients.
Service was typical for many japanese/sushi style restaurants I have visited across the country. But, the prices were very reasonable and the portions were good.
I love the food at sun sushi. However, they seem to mix up my order a lot. Not to mention the service is horrible. I’ve never been served my more boring, lifeless individuals as the servers are there. I’ll continue to go there, just because it’s quick and cheap. But as for going out for a nice sushi meal, i’ll take Basho and their amazing service any day, and the sushi isn’t even comparible. It... more

While the sushi is very good and the prices are reasonable some of the servers difficulty with English really holds back the experience. I ADORE this place! Yes, the service can be a bit lacking (I’ve received wrong orders a couple times, but I was given the right one and on one occasion, a free appetizer!) but given many of the staff don’t speak fluent English, it’s fine. This sushi place was alright. I understand it can't be amazing because of location and lack of high quality and certain ingredients. Such as having no raw tuna for sashimi, instead overly seared tuna that was poor quality. The rice I ordered was like mush it was very overcooked. A lot of their seafood has been previously frozen which causes it to lose its natural juices and flavor when thawed.... more
I took off a star per complaint:
1: They sometimes have slow sevice

My girlfriend and I popped in today looking for a quick bite before the supper rush (about 4pm) — just a salad and a roll each. The most incompetent service I’ve ever received, anywhere. It took 40 minutes to get menus, one member of the party was served in 15 minutes while the other 5 watched him eat. Best sushi on the rock. I cant even count how many times I’ve been there and I’ve never been disappointed by the food. Loves the spicy salmon and sushi pizza. Absolutely delicious!
Really good sushi, I've been to sushi bars all over and this place is better than many. Lots of choice, great service and good quality.
I have had sushi in many places including Hawaii and NYC and I have to say, for the price, Sun Sushi is not bad. I’ve loved this place since it opened but their service is 50/50 siding from alright to terrible. Being that there are 3 choices in the city for sushi, you’re stuck if you decide to stop going to 1 of these restaurants.
I totally agree. The worst sushi I have EVER been served. I am shocked to read how many people rave about this place. Perhaps they never get off the island, poor things.
I have sampled sushi around the world and have to say that the stuff served at Sun Sushi is a total disappointment. I am new to St. John’s and was looking for a place to get my regular dose of sushi. I gave Sun Sushi two tries and was disappointed both times. Tasteless and uninteresting and I confess I felt a bit off after both meals.
The taste and quality of the food has always been great. Their prices are really good too. The service is about a 0 out of 5. It’s been tolerable because the food is always good, but our most recent visit will be our last. Unbelievably bad sushi.
I really can't believe all these reviews that give this restaurant such glowing ratings, it's shocking.
I have eaten sushi in dozens of restaurants all over North America. The sushi at this place ranks at the very bottom.
I’m a huge fan of Sun Sushi, though I agree with everyone else – their service is the worst! I think their prices are really reasonable, their food is always good, the tables are clean (I’d probably avoid the washrooms if possible). I have never gotten take-out there before but I should probably consider it! It would be a great way to avoid the bad service!
While I generally enjoy Sun sushi’s food, and atmosphere, every time I go there, something goes wrong on our order. Something is forgotten, or mixed up, or left in. Every time I ask about having s little bit of seaweed salad instead of a house salad, I get a different answer.
I honestly ADORE Sun Sushi. The Baked Tilapia Roll! Oh, and for dessert, don’t forget to ask for the Banana Tempura! It’s not on the menu, but it’s delicious. Last time I had it they were out of vanilla icecream and we tried it with ginger icecream instead. It was an interesting experience!

I was skeptical way back when Sun Shushi opened – having lived in Japan for several years i considered myself something of a sushi aficionado!
After eating at numerous sushi locations all around the country, Sun Sushi is definitely up there in quality and price. I tried many specialty rolls and the were all fantastic.Complimentary green tea and miso soup.
no soy paper substitution for their sushi rolls, horrible noodles, and frozen, boxed dumplings. No thanks.
Love Sun Sushi but am currently completely disappointed with their lack of regard for their customers. They have been inexplicably closed for about a month and a half now, not only this but I was told the would be open on the 8th which i found out today has been changed to the 15th. Due to this i am seriously considering not going back there at al even though it is great food.
I have to say out of the Sushi places I’ve visited Sun Sushi is my favorite. The tea and soup are complimentary with the sushi rolls you order (I think). Someone commented that there is no green tea, however the Genmaicha tea they serve is a combination of green tea and brown rice and is delicious! I have heard that Asian Tastes is good though, so they may have some competition there.
We eat here almost all the time, and really love the food! The service is nothing to mention, its not good, its not bad...its a bit robotic. I have eaten in a lot of sushi restaurants across the country, this ranks middle...the ambience is not typical of private sushi restaurants. Food is really good though, no issues.

I actually agree with that. The quality of Sun Sushi compares favourably to any Sushi place I’ve tried off the island. Admittedly I’ve only been to a few sushi places off the island, but it’s better then all the fancy Toronto sushi joints I’ve been in. Sun Sushi hasn’t disappointed me yet.
Best sushi on the rock. In fact, in its class Sun Sushi would probably rank up there as some of the best sushi in Canada. Well maybe. In any case there is nothing quite like ordering their party pack for take-out and eating it all by yourself without utensils.
The food here is sooo good, and the prices are pretty decent. You can have a feed for under 20.00. The service is a little vague, but once your order is in, it doesn’t take long to get your food. Definitely on my list of favourites.
Why oh why would they assume you like fish eggs in your california roll…
Twice now I’ve ordered some kind of sushi roll, and it came with fish eggs in it, when they were clearly not listed along with every other thing that the roll contained.
and you can’t pick them out, they stick to everything :(
Service a little slow at times – but certainly better than most digs in St. John’s
I’ve been to Sun Sushi twice. Love the food, but the service I received BOTH times (was most recently there this past June) was horrible.
tasty rolls but the price and size of the fish inside the rolls are awful. I am completely turned off paying for sushi that barely has a bite of tuna in their “spicy tuna” rolls. they charge too much for the amount of fish you actually get. more rice than anything else.
still, their recipes are interesting and flavorful…just wish they’d drop the prices… it’s a ripoff.
The sushi is good, the prices are O.k., the service is c@!%!y. Get yourself a takeout order and enjoy.
Some of the menu items are seasonal, which kinda stinks. Wish they carried more imported beers. The full menu is available on the website so you can pick what you want before you even arrive!
Decent mid level sushi restaurant. Good & quick food, spotty service. Recommended.
The food is yummy, but I have also had terrible, terrible service there before.
My husband loves the BBQ eel roll, but I always get the cooked menu items…love the ton katsu chicken, orange chicken, rice bowls, vegetable tempura, and age gyoza. The food is always fresh and hot. The selection is amazing.
I was very turned off from Sun Sushi the first time I went there. The service was quite bad. They didn’t even have any green tea! I thought about suggesting they go buy a new kettle. I go to Asian Taste for all my sushi cravings.
