New owners Darrell and Leslie Hannibal have transformed the once-formal bistro into a more cozy spot. They kept the service, cuisine, and wine list that the Smoking Dog's known for but relaxed the atmosphere. The result: a full house most nights for accessible French cooking, and lively patio action on sunny days. Witloof chicory salad ($12) and flatiron steak with fingerlings ($24) are always... more
To date, the little Kitsilano neighborhood of Yorkville Mews has remained a local secret, perhaps because the few tourists who do venture into this delightful 1-block stretch are immediately confronted with a confusing variety of choices. This French bistro with international fusion overtones is generally a safe bet for a good meal. The menu features strip-loin steak with bordelaise sauce,... more
Smartly, the Smoking Dog’s owners, Jean Séguin and Judith Andrews, have bolstered the wine list, kept the classics, but freshened the menu. The result: a full house most nights for accessible French cooking, and lively patio action on sunny days. Find the classic mimosa salad ($8), onion soup ($9), and very good steak frites ($15). And what’s this—some of the better pastas in town in a French... more
4 of us Went there for dine out, service was good, food was ok only, mine was snapper cooked with green bean, carrot in paper wrap. The green bean was not fully cook, so bland, not much taste, maybe because no other sauce besides lemon slices. Dessert was choc mouse, way too sweet and not using dark choc. But the ice cream was excellent.... more
We went here for DIne out Vancouver 2014. Did no really want to go here as the menu was limited but booked with 6 other friends and this was one place which was able to accommodate. The service had it's ups and downs. They were pleasant and tried their best when they were chatting with us. They asked us if... more
A little bit off the beaten path of restaurants, the Smoking Dog was a delightful find. It had a fairly good wine list however wines could only be bought by the glass or bottle. No 1/2 liters here.
Overall a really nice experience.
Six of us had dinner on a Saturday night and did the dine out Vancouver menu. It was fantastic. Portions were just right and very flavourful. Staff was hard working and the manager was terrific.
we had a groupon that was expiring so we had to use it or almost loose 50% of the value. we reluctantly went as we had been reading reviews on many sites. we actually were not that disappointed. we had a pleasant evening of food, attentive service and a pretty crowded place. perhaps others were using their groupons?

Went on Dec 4 expecting chef Robbie Robinson, recently written up. However, he has left and I suggest a less than honest approach by management that they had taken their website down. The Fraser Valley pate appy was dreadful, mushy, small, institutional garnishes. I will say that the tenderloin was excellent but small and poor value for the price.
Ate there last night and enjoyed great food, great service, and great ambience. Not rushed. Sat and enjoyed the meal for 2.5 hours. Definitely on my list. I recommend a name change: Smiling Dog?
Finding the Smoking Dog was pure serendipity, an unexpected pleasure and an absolute treat! The restaurant itself had great ambiance and a great location, a block or so off of the beach--perfect for Bard on the Beach! The service was friendly, accommodating, and efficient. Our server let us taste the wine we were considering, and offered great suggestions for those... more
We had a gift certificate for the Smoking Dog that we won through Dine Out Vancouver, so we decided to try it out tonight for the first time. We were greeted with news that it was a new menu and new chef, and our server admittted he was also new. We were not sure what to expect. We had a... more
We went to the Smoking Dog for the Dine-out three course meal; we’d been meaning to try this Kitsilano French restaurant for awhile.
The service was excellent. Staff is friendly and service prompt. The French onion soup was average; lots of onions but nothing special. The coq au vin did not taste like a coq au vin; it would best...

Went for lunch with colleagues. Good location, easy to find street parking. Menu had a good variety and atmosphere was great - cozy, warm and quiet. Ordered the mushroom ravioli and was shocked when the plate appeared - three small squares of pasta, beautifully arranged, but such a small portion. I was even more surprised when the rest of my... more
Angelo de Meo and his team do a good job here: the bistro has been nicely revamped inside, the atmosphere is warm, the staff offer friendly and pleasant service. Summer seating outside is pleasant, and you feel like you're in a quiet side pocket of Kitsilano, away from the hustle of 4th Avenue, Burrard Street etc. And the food is... more
We went as a party of 4 to The Smoking Dog, a 'local' bistro in a residential neighbourhood, in June before a nearby Bard on the Beach performance. We had a reservation and although relatively early, their were a lot of other theatre diners there. On this rainy night the space felt warm and cozy and despite the crowd, service... more
This small out of the way resturant was one of the best things that happened our trip to the Great Northwest and Canada. Its in a residentual area with parking easily found out front and food and service second to none. Our meals were small but enough and very well prepared and presented and the deserts were larger than expected... more
The outdoor patio is excellent in the summer. The street is not too busy, but there is enough activity for people watching. The food is also good. Try the spot prawns when they are in season (May and June).
We decided to have French food after work. We ended up at The Smoking Dog. As it was Valentine's Day, they had a 3 course set menu available, but we chose to order from the menu. The selections were standard french bistro food. I started with French Onion Soup. The broth was very good, but the cheesy crouton on top... more
The Dog is our local, and so went over Friday evening for a drink and some food. We waited in the entrance for 10 minutes, while two waiting staff sat staring at their screen ignoring us, and everyone else in the restaurant who was obviously looking for service. The third waitress prattled on and on about her summer plans to... more
We recently returned to this established neighbourhood favourite at 2nd & Cypress for a bowl of moules et frites on the patio. The bistro has "upped" the French fare on offer and we had an excellent late lunch with a lovely bottle of French rose suggested by our server. The goat cheese salad was wonderful and, in a cultural turn,... more
Visited the dog only a few times. The food is good and I like the menu selections. This is also a place where you might see a celebrity hanging out.
Expensive ($17 for pasta)
Poor Lighting - a light above the table, or on the table would've been great.
Loud music, hard to hear others at the table. The music was some sort of contemporary instrumental stuff.
Small portions - too small to make a guy feel full. Had to eat when I got home. Chicken Pasta contained about 3 small pieces of chicken.
Taste of pasta - bland, boring. French fries...

Great dining experience, fun atmosphere. See their website for evenings where there is live music.
A hidden gem in Kits - great food, great atmosphere and live jazz on the weekends. Cheers!
Realy Sad to say that it has gone down... WAaaaay down. The past few times we have been there our food took over 40 mins to arrive, but was still quite good.
We suggested it to some friends and we went there and was terribly disapointed. The appetizers took 40 mins to arrive (arrived cold). & then our mains took...
