Shadow Lawn Inn is a beautiful, family-run business located in the heart of Rothesay, New Brunswick. In addition to fine dining in the dining rooms and casual dining at The Side Door Cafe, the Inn has 11 rooms available all year long.
Small portions, arrogant service. Once, our party got 'bumped' (our reservation was cancelled by them) because they got a reservation from a larger and more lucrative group (of physicians).
In an affluent suburb with tree-lined streets, palatial homes, tennis, golf, and a yacht club, this inn fits right in with its clapboards, columns, and antiques. Some bedrooms have fireplaces and one suite has a whirlpool bath. The chefs honed their skills in some of the finest upper-Canadian kitchens, and their creative ideas are reflected in the dining room's Continental and seafood dishes.... more
Shadow Lawn Inn has the potential to be a wonderful place, unfortunately the customer service was some of the worst we've ever experienced. The inn itself is old, but well maintained, and there's no denying that the food they serve is wonderful. However, when the staff treat guests so terribly, it's hard to have any positive feelings about the place.... more
I stayed here after coming across on the Digby-St John ferry. Got in a bit late, was met my the owner who carried my bags and took me to a huge, lovely room on the second floor. Such a comfy bed, and a huge, remodeled bathroom. I ate in the restaurant for dinner, and had one of the best meals... more
I expected an updated room from the photos and the reviews I read, but I didn't find it here. It was a very busy weekend for them, as they were having a dinner the night we arrived and a wedding the next day. So I can understand that they were especially busy. But no one was at the door when... more
The room was huge, the meal was delicious and the staff were very friendly. My wife and I stayed here in celebration of our anniversary and I would highly recommend their anniversary package. We will definitely stay again.
There is no pool or fitness centre so disregard that rating in my review...

I booked a private room for a dinner party of 15 people. Everyone love the food and atmosphere. The staff was extremely accommodating. Will definitely be going back to experience the delicious menu again. The sticky pudding was out of this world!
Really enjoyed the dinner last night. The soup was fantastic, a Thai curry with some seeds (pumpkin?). For the main course, I had the scallops. Perfectly done (although, for my taste, a little too heavy with the salt in some spots) and loved the accompanying succotash and puree. The dessert was a tough choice, but I settled on the creme... more
Stayed three nights in spring 2013. Room was huge, comfortable, quite and had a sizable ensuite bathroom. There is a relaxing lounge below with a bar. The hosts are excellent, very helpful and friendly. Additionally, the restaurant is high quality.
I also recommend the Inn for hosting events. They were able to accommodate 60+ of us without issue.
Can't find anything wrong... Food, service and atmosphere are second to none! Roaring fire in the lobby. Can't wait to come back. You must try this.
This Inn continues to be a jewel in the Maritimes and they have hired a superlative chef to make the experience more delectable and one that will bring us back for dining alone. This is now the best dining experience in the locale. Interesting menu and delicious food. Not to be missed.
Thank you so much to Jamie, Nancy Fox, and the entire staff of Shadow Lawn, for going above and beyond to make our Christmas dinner for 60 go off without a hitch during a prolonged power outage. Not only was the meal delicious, but the festive atmosphere of this historic building was enhanced by the fire in the fireplace and... more
We stayed with our daughter at the Shadow Lawn Inn for four nights and it was fantastic.
The staff continually went above and beyond our expectations. The owners, Jamie and Ann-Marie, are very friendly and welcoming. The kitchen staff made whatever our daughter wanted and brought it right to our room. The service was very attentive, the rooms are beautiful...

What a wonderful venue for a wedding! The rooms are beautiful, bright, very spacious and the beds comfortable. The food delicious. The staff was amazing and accomodating. Whatever was needed, they made it happen! They were friendly and greeted us every time we came and went. I would recommend this location for a wedding, overnight or longer stay. Thank you... more
We hosted a retirement dinner for 2 employees at Shadow Lawn Inn. The front room and foyer was a cozy spot to mix, mingle & have some drinks prior to being seated for dinner. The service could not have been better & the food was delicious. The staff made every effort to make sure we had what we needed for... more
We really appreciated our one night stop here and wish it could have been longer. The highlights for us were the well appointed, spacious bedroom and the ability to have a drink and meal on the premises without having to go out. The bed deserves a special mention for size and comfort. Small touches, like sparkling wine and chocolate covered... more
Do yourself a favor and stop and stay at this world class inn and you will impressed beyond words! Owned by a lovely couple a continuation of the family business it is beyond a doubt the best experience we have ever had. It rivals world class hotels here and in Europe . The beds are so comfortable you will not... more
My husband and I stayed for the evening in the beautiful honeymoon suite, we were impressed by the comfortable bed, huge jacuzzi tub and tasteful decor. We had a beautiful supper and cocktails and were treated like family by the incredible staff and owner. I cant recommend the inn highly enough, what a perfect weekend!
This is more of a boutique hotel than an inn - the staff was not friendly at all (except for the kitchen workers, who helped with directions) and we felt like we were at a chain hotel in terms of our welcome. But the building is lovely and the bar is in a beautiful room. Location is a bit out... more
We selected Room 1 for our stay at the Shadow Lawn and it was almost perfect. The room was very spacious and modern with a flat screen TV, seating area and comfortable bed. Here are our impressions:
1. This is a very old home without elevators or bellman (it's an inn with limited staff) so prepare to shlep your stuff...

Stayed at the Shadow Lawn Inn for a wedding and spent three nights. The property was lovely - and definitely felt of a slightly higher caliber than most bed & breakfasts. Sometimes B&B's can feel like you are guests in someone's mid-sized home - but Shadow Lawn is big enough (and run well enough) that you feel like you are... more
My hubby spent a night to celebrate our anniversary. Upon our arrival we were welcomed in our beautiful room with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries...The room was the nicesest hotel room ive ever been in,well stocked and very very clean. The next business trip to the Saint John, NB area, I will happily stay at this elegant, historic inn. The rooms have been carefully renovated, maintaining it's historic feel with all the modern requirements of a business or vacation traveller. Besing in Rothesay, and not in downtown Saint John, gave the Inn a relaxed feel. The staff are welcoming and... more
So we're getting on the car Ferry tomorrow to Digby, NS. Wanted sometime better than staying in Big City St. John.
Andrew and the staff at this quiet retreat take VERY good people that discover this treat, and come back.
Dinner was wonderful! Breakfast is included.
Try it, yu won't be disappointed!
My family of four has just returned from our vacation on the East Coast and I simply had to take the time to write a review for this delightful Inn. We arrived late evening with two small children (5 & 3) and the owners greeted us by name. Our very spacious, comfortable apartment was a welcome sight after a very... more
I re-visited Shadow Lawn to see what it was like in summer (my winter visit was so positive). It was even better. Several of the rooms have been redecorated, and the grounds in summer are lovely. The food also was divine. This inn should not be missed if you are travelling in the Saint John area and want a beautiful,... more
The Inn is comfortable and the renovated rooms are a treat. What a pleasant oasis. We had two meals in the dining room and both were superb.
I visited Shadow Lawn for the first time this week - business traveller. Upon arrival, after driving thru some nasty weather, I asked for, and received, a nice cup of tea. This set the tone for the rest of the stay. Very good service, excellent food, and a very comfortable room on a cold winter night. I look forward to... more
This elegant hotel is on one of the main roads in Rothesay. Access to the hotel is very easy, with ample parking places, and the hotel and gardens are well kept up. The restaurant is wonderful and the food was delicious. The rooms are large by European standards and well furnished. The service is good and the hotel in a... more
My husband and I recently stayed here for a weekend to attend a couple of family events in the area. Our overall reaction was the whole place was a bit "tired". The whole interior had a dreary feel to it. Our room, Room#2, was pleasant enough, but the window frames were peeling and the TV remote didn't work. {obviously I'm... more
I have been coming to Shadow Lawn Inn for at least 15 years as a business traveller and have loved the charm of Shadow Lawn Inn located in beautiful Rothesay close to Saint John, NB. Beautiful place. The staff were excellent. it was a wonderful experience all around...highly recommend staying here. and the food was fantastic as well.
We booked a room at Shadow Lawn as a wedding gift for our close friends. The room itself was spacious and clean but the wall-to-wall carpet was worn and the decor was not appropriate for a heritage inn (looked like low end chain hotel decor). Towels were scarce, toilet paper and tissue ran out & there were no extra stocked... more
Shadow Lawn is a great alternative in the St. John area to the tacky chain hotels and mall madness that is springing up. It has old world charm and elegance. The rooms are elegantly appointed. The value for the price is astounding. A more comfortable matress would be the only thing I would change.. On the night we stayed there... more
What a fabulous old Inn this is! From the grand entrance to the sweeping staircase - every detail is wonderful. Large comfortable bedroom with huge bathroom and the surprise of a mini kitchen too.
