Our resturant is in the heart of downtown Edmonton. It is a relaxed contemporary bistro. Has an excellent and well priced wine list. We are the late night dining destination in Edmonton with the kitchen open till 2am friday and saturday and Open till 12am every other night. We were established in 1984. Don't let cafe fool you. We have a full menu with many choices. Some of our specialties... more
This restaurant was incredible. The food was magnificent and the staff were well versed in their wines; a perfect pairing for each course. As we went for supper, and this is an off Jasper Ave. location, the parking was great, close, and free. I especially liked my desert; the best ginger cake I have ever had.
It has kept the flavour of the Old Select and still has the Mussels on the menu. The menu was trendy and the lighting great. Nice buzz in the restaurant.
Definitely enjoyed my dinner. Awesome service from Tannis and Joe! Excellent food and engaging servers
Just an all around great experience. Best service I think we've ever had. Our waitress was so efficient, personable and knowledgable and her wine knowledge was particularly impressive which sadly you don't find in most restaurants. Food was great and decor cozy. We will definitely be returning to this great little place, looking forward to trying out lunch too!
The food was delicious and beautifully presented, our waitress was both professional and personable, the wine pairings were to die for. Overall a great experience - I had not been to Select in 7-8 years, and this definitely was worth it. We used a Living Social deal, and the waitress did not treat us any different. She was thorough, there was loads of time to digest the gnocchi, salad with... more
We enjoyed Select very much. The cool atmosphere with the steampunk vibe enhances the experience. The food is prepared well, with the knowledgable waitstaff able to discuss details of the menu to help you make a decision. The lobster risotto was a delicious side dish to share along with our filet. Our waiter was happy to share information on additional wines beyond the wine list, helping us... more
1st time and will be back - service was great (our waiter, Mike, very attentive and charming and made good suggestions) - food was great, didn't have to wait too long, nice wine and beer list, and we loved our food. I had the little fondue appetizer for dinner (after an appetizer) and it was all I needed and scrumptious flavour combinations. dining partner had chicken - -very nice. we'll be... more
Went on a very busy Saturday, there was a large group dining there which made the vibe quite energetic. It's good to see that they can accommodate large groups like it, as I will consider it for my next event. Food was great and so were the wine selections, our server helped us select an excellent bottle which we thoroughly enjoyed. All in all an excellent dining experience, we will absolutely... more
Quality of food very good. Serving size was also plentiful. I had pork schnitzel and girlfriend had fish. Steak tartare as the appetizer also very good!
food has gone downhill, cheese fondu tasted like alcohol, gnocchi was cold. But the server was excellent
Believe it or not this is one of the best burgers in town. However, we made the mistake of getting the house salad and it was horrible. Stick to the fries or a caesar salad. The restaurant was virtually empty (one other person when we arrived). I find this a bit uncomfortable. It is nice to be able to talk and hear each other but it does not make for a pleasant dining experience. However, this... more
I have been to Select a number of times and the food and service has always been great. I have had a number of business lunches and several personal dinners. It is so good to have a place that I know will always meet and surpass my expectations.
So I had no idea that this place has been around forever. But the naked velvet paintings have been replaced with more 'modern' ones (like the one commonly known as the crack wh&%e!) but the ambience is fantastic. Owners seem to always be around, food is fantastic and service even better. Definitely worth the visit.
We made reservations (which I would recommend as it filled up quickly) and arrived a few minutes before noon on a Friday.
Once we looked at the menu, we couldn't decide what to order! But we both decided to get the Downtown Dining Week specials as they wouldn't last and we could come back to try other things.
We both...

Started with the Lobster Bruschetta, then we had the chopped salad and for our main course we had the Thyme and Dijon Chicken and Beef Tenderloin and we finished with the Creme Brulee and Mascarpone cheese cake. EVERYTHING we had was EXCELLENT and the service was superb.
Last time I went here, my review was not great. Quality of food was slipping and service was poor. This time I took my siblings, family, and parents for Mother's Day. We had the same server as last time, but the service was outstanding. She did a 180° turnaround compared to last time. The food was generally very good, but the schnitzel is still poor. My mother is an irritable old woman who is... more
The seared Article Char was dry I.e. Overdone. The veggies with it were not warm.
The Beef tenderloin sauce was too sweet.
Overall the food was disappointing (though priced rather high).
There have been decor changes since our last visit. They have stripped away the old warm wood and replaced it with a generic plastic look and three TV screens. That in it self blows away the ambiance.
Went with my wife and another couple. Our server was excellent. Saturday night, place was busy but server never made us feel rushed at all. Food was great. No complaints at all. I would go back, no question. A hidden gem in Edmonton.
Atmosphere was nice, food was good, service was great.
I have been a regular at this restaurant for many years. Never a place to disappoint, my dining experience now is becoming less consistent This last visit was sad. Despite having reservation, we must have been seated at the worst, smallest table in the house. I had the schnitzel, while my spouse had the pasta after we both shared the mussels to start. The mussels were as.good,as,usual, and the... more
We went to the restaurant for dinner, and it was generally a good experience in terms of food and friendly/efficient service (even if menu is slightly limited). But somehow the restaurant just missed that wow factor.
Lobster Bruschetta is now my favorite appetizer and I will be back just for it! The Gnocchi Fondue was my friends favorite. We shared the Seared Arctic Char and that is for sure a do again. By sharing we had room for the Mascarpone Cheese cake which of course we didn't share as we had to have our own slice and were glad we did.
The service and ambience were great. Meal was nicely paced and a great place to sit and visit with a friend or to have a romantic date night. My friend and i went for all seafood. The mussels were quite nice and good amount for the price. We also ordered the lobster risotto and the scallops. Scallops were delicious! Not over cooked and again a good portion for the price! The risotto is where... more
We had a great time. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and fun. We started with the mussels and potato cod cakes and they were fantastic. our main courses were simply outstanding. I had the Seared Halibut and my partner raved about his Beef Tenderloin. we didn't have room for anything else so we coming back for the Ginger cake and crème Brulee.
I highly recommend you try Select, you will...

I've been loving Select. The food is great, I highly recommend the gnocchi fondue, beef tartare and mussels!! The staff are unbelievably personable, they always greet me with fond recognition and even remember what I drink! Love the old movies in the background. Breakfast at Tiffany's was playing the last time I was in, an old Favorite. Keep up the great work Select!
Must try the chicken Masala perogies, they are amazing! The cod and Potatoe cakes are fantastic and we loved the Salmon BLT and the Select burger. Service was spot on and the room was warm and inviting.
I was in a bit of a rush which the server said wasn't a problem and it wasn't. I told her what I liked and didn't and she suggested the Chopped salad and Chicken Masala Perogies. Both were great! If I had room and time, I would have had the Salmon BLT, so I will just have to come back to have it!
Making my reso now! :)
Felt relaxed and was comfortable at lunch with a friend.
I would return to try more dishes.
Would be nice to have more choices on the menu.
Service was timely and friendly.
Would recommend to others.
Been here a few times now, and I've always found the service a little... not bad per se, but a little stiff? Just not that friendly/cheerful. This time though, the service was terrible; it was late and there were almost no tables, and the server was still not attentive at all - he was as little awkward, and did not replenish bread or refill water without being prompted. Basically any request we... more
No joke....this place makes a oustanding variety of soups during the lunch. Clients of mine concur, it's delicious.
If wine and someone special is on your spoon for the evening, then Select has the plate to match. This is a renaissance locale of a previous establishment, that's taken to a new vibrant level. The room has a very cool decorum, and equal to task... is the wine to pair. The staff I've dealt with there, are up to par, with a veteran sommelier. Its great to know that when guests are in town for... more
Its been a hit and miss last couple times we've been here over past few years. The last time we went the food was excellent (Mussels are to die for!) and the lamb was very tender. The service was alright (probably because we didn't order alcohol). It is pretty pricey but its considered fine-dining ~$80/couple with no drinks.
We first started coming to Cafe select 26 years ago and we have been coming sporadically over the years. We haven't been here on a while and much has changed. On a good note, the changes are good. The place is more open, and a bit brighter. The service is very good. The staff is friendly and the food was... more
Select is a must try.
Started with Gnocchi Fondue, Tartare and mussels. We told the server we wanted to take our time and make an evening of it. He was great, and let us take our time ordering but was always there to fill our wine glasses and water. We then had the Lamb Shank, Pork Schnitzel and Seared Halibut, everything was wonderful.
simple plainly plated food with high prices. Avoid this resto. Its bland and tasteless
We decided to check out Select after not being at Cafe Select since they closed their 109 Street location. We were warmly welcomed and were served by very friendly staff members. The food tasted great and the pacing of the courses was perfect. We found street parking as we arrived at 6 PM and downtown was starting to quiet down.... more
Great wine! Nice playlist, not too loud. To dip a tender pan fried gnocchi in creamy delicious fontina/Brie is such a treat! The beef tenderloin was superb and matching it with baked maple brussel sprouts is healthy tasty deliciousness! I switched the garlic mashed potatoes for the lobster risotto. Wow. The brussel sprouts and the risotto were the best I've... more
This restaurant was once called Cafe Select. In it's time it was a great restauant, but all good things come to an end. Then a Groupon arrived under the name Select. I thought maybe it's under new management (which it is), and decided to give it a try. My meal was amazing (not only tasty, but hot too)!! Starting with... more
We had good service and a very tasty lunch. Great appetizer-poutine. Nothing like any other poutine I've had before.
Food was tasty, service was a bit slow. (The place has changed it's name to Select now as well).
Was staying nearby and ventured into this little bistro as a friend used to frequent it years ago... Tried many of the items, and was rather pleased with them all. They have some great small plates: the wild mushrooms for example...

Loved the atmosphere. All staff were very friendly and accommodating. Food was delicious! We will be back, can't wait to try out their adorable patio this summer. I'd highly recommend this place :)
There were four of us. We shared the gnocchi fondue and extremely generous mussel appetizers. Both were excellent. Nice additions to the fondue were the prosciutto wrapped apples and asparagus. Service was attentive but not overbearing. The vegetarian main is panella. The other mains we had were t pork shoulder, Mac and cheese with duck confit and the Atlantic Cod.... more
I sent my son and husband for a nice evening out at Cafe Select on Nov. 27, and they were very disappointed with the food they received. The Steak was raw and tasteless, so my husband sent it back, the replacement was much smaller and very salty. My son had the Branzino and it too was very bland. Will never... more
service was exceptionally slow. Very dark. food was mediocre at best Can't imagine how they remain open
Went to Select (formerly Cafe Select) for a date night with the boy. Delicious food. The beet salad was really yummy, as was the Wild Mushroom appetizer. They even had a vegan selection, Panella, which was awesome...Spinach, potatoes, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, all atop some chickpea polenta. The chickpea polenta was also a part of the mushroom appie and was to... more
My first time here, early on a Monday evening with a friend. We got good service from the lone waiter who was charming and funny. We started with the scallops app, ample for two and interesting. My friend had the cod and i had the sea bass, both nicely served although mine had a bit of a pink gloppy sauce... more
Cafe Select has been a long time favorite restaurant located in downtown Edmonton. Over the 25 years I have been dining here I have seen several decor changes, expectable staff turnover, and slight menu revisions. 2012 saw Select taken over by an established restaurant from the south side, Packrat Louie. The big question would be: can Packrat take it over... more
Although I loved many items on the old menu, I was excited to try the new menu. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed. First, service was brutally slow for a quiet Thursday night given only 5 other tables were occupied. When our appetizers still hadn't arrived after 30 minutes, we advised our waitress that we had a play to catch. Appetizers finally... more
Great menu selections that change seasonally, I really love the mussels the every time I dine there, my only complaint is the service, they are extremely aloof, and could do a much better job.
Took my wife here for our first date & we just can from our 3yr anniversary !
Have you had a fantastic onion soup (French) ? This restaurant served a most traditional version, not too salty, lots of onions prepared with care. Oh and the mix of cheese on top was delectable and grilled to perfection. The duck confit was fantastic. Truly it was prepared with care as were the side potatoes. I bet you will look up with amazement after the first taste of these freshly mashed... more
Two friends & I decided to go here for supper, as we had been last summer and the food and dessert were absolutely to die for. Not so this time......
No complaints about service. The food however left a lot to be desired. We were dismayed to find the selection had changed drastically, and when we inquired as to why,...

Had dinner with a couple of friends at Café Select, the physical location and the interior design give you the impression that it's a very fancy restaurant that requires a suit and a tie, but it's just laid back, the setting is nice.

What happened to the brilliant dessert display? replaced by "well chosen" wines? No more will I go to Cafe select, their website doesn't even work anymore... so much for reservations.
After I heard the renovations was completed, decided to go back there to sample the old favorites in their wonderful menu. We are early for dinner so the place is pretty much empty except for one other table. Its brighter now, but still the same tables, chairs, decor. As soon as you walk in, there are no more desserts greeting... more
We used to love hanging out here in the 1990's & recently went back for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised at the service & food. Its still a cool casual place to hang out & visit with friends. Food is good as is the service.
Although the menu is a bit pricy some of the appetizers are large and very nic
Great restaurant with great food and great service. Excellent wine list. Try the tomato soup, it's delicious
We havnt been to cafe select in a few years, and i hope its still there. When i was in my early twenties going to cooking school and living across the street from cafe select,in the now burnt down arlington. The place was magical to us.It didnt matter,a group of friends, coffee and dessert or on that special date,it was the place. The food was... more
The Cafe Select on 109 Street has now changed names to Original Joe's. Cafe Select had average food & slow service. Didn't last long.
...if you want that european cafe 'feel', this is the place for you... music is predominantly the clink of glasses and the sound of voices rather than big tunes from speakers... food is delish, especially the mussels, when in season... more
The food was FABULOUS!!!! But the price is quite steep. Admittedly, I splurged a bit on my meal ... but be prepared to spend 75-100 dollars per person. But the food is definitely worth it, and service was fantastic!!!
Absolutely awful service. Unprofessional right down to the management. Used to be great, what a downturn.
we had wine with calamari and scallop salad. it was realy delicious.severs are friendly. we got almost asian experience with sea food curry and vegetable curry. finally we had a fresh fruit experience with chocolate fondue.it was a fantastic night.
Before going I had high hopes for this restaurant and was looking forward to a fine dining experience. I was sadly disappointed with the level of service, quality of food, and the price. I don’t mind paying top dollar for good food, however, the food at Café Select was at best amateurish. I for one will never go back to... more
This is a nice little restaruant with great staff. it has a classy dark atmosphere which is great for a romantic meal. Everything about this restaurant is great. Not just great service but great servers.
the food is fantastic. It is the place to take you significant other for a start or end to a great night out.
I used to be a really good customer of yours – years ago. I was not only a frequent customer; I was a fan. The service was always brilliant. The food was wonderful. And the ambiance was that of a Turkish brothel. Not that I’ve ever visited a Turkish brothel – but I loved how it felt in your café.... more
I love taking my girlfriend out for dinner at cafe select. Excellent decor and the low lighting is rather romantic. Most importantly the food is exquisite.
Nice for friends night out
Dark. Good place for late night drinks.
This used to be on of my favorate places to go for special occasions. It has been a few years since I have been there.
Food & desserts good. Decor dark & cold.
Very good food but way too expensive!
Eh. It wasn't bad. Seemed a little generic. Food was good.
LOVE it! Great atmosphere, a near perfect menu - service was wonderful all 5 or 6 times I've been there.
Went for fondu with friends a few months ago, absolutely delicious, the portions could be bigger though.. lol
Modest restaurant with a delicious menu, but limited lunch/dinner selections. Fondues are delicious, as are the desserts (i.e., creme brulee). Slightly overpriced.
Another place to flaunt who can be more pretentious! lol!
this location is better than the southside
Used to be my favorite!! Really gone downhill. Don't even know when I will go again. I am so disappointed, I really used to love this place.
Wonderful food – most romantic restaurant in Edmonton.
Service was slow. Presentation of the food was quite nice. I ordered a Tomato Soup and Mussels. The soup was good but 6 for just a small cup. Mussels was ok but I like the mussels made in the East Coast better.
havent visited in awhile..but I remember their potatoes were delicious very romantic setting food was quite tasty
If you want a meal, this is the place. Huge portions for your hard earned dollar.
Great rack of lamb, with nice presentation. Portions aren't huge but quite satisfying. Awesome although somewhat intimidating wine list (a little out of synch with the rest of the menu?) The lighting is a little dim to read the menu. "Background" music turned up too loud. The menu selection was extensive, with a good range of prices and tastes.
A cozy restaurant with a contemporary upscale cafe design offers a distinguished wine selection and after-dinner-drink menu, which compliment the European fare. Two locations in Edmonton. Mon – Fri 11 am – 12 am; Sat 5 pm – 2 am – Sun 5 am – 12 am; times may vary for each location, call to confirm.
