Great food - best to make a reservation.
I am all about supporting local business but sadly this will not be one of them. After reading the Yelp reviews for Sauter's Inn we decided to try their breakfast menu. Big mistake.
I ordered Eggs Benedict. This dish is the measure of any good breakfast cook/kitchen and when done right you can usually trust everything else on the breakfast menu to be palatable. I was served overcooked yolks! I...

Usually we receive great service but of late the food has been a tad inconsistent. We have been going here since the place opened. The original owner sold the place many years back. He remained onsite to help with the transition for awhile. Since then some of the items on the menu have taken on slightly different flavours. They are okay but unexpected. I will return because it is fairly... more
The wife and I have driven past this small enclave of Bavaria on Kingston Road in Ajax multiple times and said we should try it out.
So we stopped by. Before entering I checked Yelp! Sadly there were only 5 reviews but with the majority offering 4 of 5 stars we went it.
The place is the German version of an English pub. We were there at 6:15 pm on a Thursday. There was only us and another...

I was excited to visit Sauter's for the very first time on my birthday. We were a party of 4 and immediately mentioned that we'd be ordering schnitzel. Since I know Schnitzel is usually made with veal I didn't bother to ask but my husband thought we should since I don't eat pork. To my surprise the server said "it's pork!". I asked if it was all pork and she said yes but there is chicken too or... more
Do you want German food? This is the place. Geat schnitzel and the best escargot in garlic butter anywhere. We have been these numerous times and never had a bad meal yet. Goulash soup, good German rye bread, red cabbage and all the other goodies are available. Lunch meals offer excellent value and dinners are reasonably priced.
The $4.99 special is what drew us here. We were surprised they still offered it on the weekends. One slice of toast, 3 eggs, home fries and your choice of one of the following: 4 sausages, 2 pieces of peameal bacon or 2 pieces of side bacon. Everything was cooked perfectly and delicious. The coffee is bottomless and an extra $2.25 but it is worth it. This was hands down the best coffee we've... more
This German Inn's restaurant will be a favourite of mine when in Ajax. The place has a nice stucco/wood German style atmosphere and yes some wall decor it might be from the 70's but, that makes the history of the place for good food & drink. If you go home hungry from here it's your own fault, as the portions... more
Wanted something different for dinner. Wife suggested Sauter's. Authentic German food. Prices a bit higher than other restaurants but you get a lot of food. The dinner for 2 fed 4 of us with leftovers to take home.
Can't wait to go back.
The food was average and the decor is from the 70's. Time to gut the place and bring it up to date. Not a nice atmosphere for diners.
My favourite eating establishment since the 70's. I would imagine that i've eaten there approx. 50 or so times since and love the food, service and facility. One minor complaint which occurred last time we ate there, 3-4 weeks ago, was the food was a little cooler than normal. If you like soups, schnitzel, liver and German beer this is... more
My wife and I eat brunch here on Sundays almost every week. They have a great breakfast special for $4.99 that keeps us coming back. The food is good and you get large portions for the price. The service is friendly and quick. We've been going there every week for almost a year and haven't had a bad meal. The decor is old school and quirky compared to any modern restaurant but that's what makes... more
We went there for my birthday dinner and had a lovely time. We ordered a schnitzel, fillet of sole and calf liver which all came in huge portions and were delicious. For dessert, we had the apple strudel, peach melba and crepes. The apply strudel had a nice crumbly crust and oozing filling. Yum. Because it was my birthday, dinner... more
I know New Years is a challenging time for restaurants, however, we were asked to move tables when we had barely finished dinner to make room for the band who was setting up during this time. Apart from the fact that the band should have already been set up, we were squeezed into an area where we were now quite far away from the make shift stage. There were intoxicated patrons where we were... more
This was a special dining experience. Great ambience with Christmas music, quiet atmospere with excellent service, a varied menu, excellent food, reasonable prices and friendly guests. This restaurant has a Bavarian theme, but the focus was more on a pleasant dining experience than on German culture. It was very relaxing and enjoyable. Highly recommended!
what a cute joint! a half-timber building with a dining room decorated in a ton of German/Hungarian knick knacks all over.
super quiet during lunchtime on a Saturday; we (including a few others after us) had come in thinking the signs outside meant all-day breakfast, but alas brekkie ends at 12 here. the lady (owner?) was kind enough to suggest a different place down the road for all day...

how can you go wrong with a full breakfast for only 5 bucks and even comes with coffee. This place has not changed for years, could maybe use a reno or just a really good cleaning, German mugs are a little dusty
The decor inside the restaurant is right out of Germany/Austria. The staff are very friendly. We had 3 people in our party and were seated right away. Some European beers and wines on the menu. The fare at the restaurant is consists of many types of schnitzel and Hungarian delights like cabbage rolls and goulash. The portions are huge. My... more
We live near the Sauter's Inn and have driven by it for years, always saying we'd have to give it a try sometime. Decided to go out for brunch last Sunday morning, and thought it was the perfect time to give it a try since they advertise a $4.99 Breakfast special on their sign.

Having liven in Germany , coming to this place to eat reminded me of how authentic schnitzel should taste! Yes it is a little on the highe end....averages about $17.95 a place..but.. the portion is HUGE!..i had spatzle with mine..cooked homemade no less and a great pint of beer served in a ceramic stein.
The staff were really friendly and...

Delicious breakfast that is very well priced but they don't skimp on the portions. Nice beer selection, German beers primarily. Getting a little rough around the edges, could use a reno
Sauter's offers casual family dining with a European flair.
The staff is friendly and efficient. I remember their sauerkraut being excellent.
Staff are really nice, waitress especially was fantastic. Family just didn't care for the food tho. The sauces were too heavy and tasted off. The steak was greasy, tough, and disgusting.
My wife had the schnitzel and found it bland and tough. Neither of us are big on German food, but we had a good experience at a german place...

And by poor we mean overpriced and blah. The food was tasteless and boring. The bread, stale. The service slow. The "wide selection of German beers" consisted of two beers on tap. We went here for our anniversary, and it will always be a disappointment for us. I hope we live for another year so we can wipe the memory... more
We visited on of our favourite German style restaurants after a 10 year hiatus living abroad. We were not surprised to see that the ownership had changed, but were very pleased to see that the menu was unchanged (great selection of schnitzels), and even better the new chef was obviously trained on the best techniques to prepare schnitzel. My wife... more
My husband and I stopped in this past weekend. The service was good, however the food was mediocre. We started with bruschetta. The plate was hot, the food on the outer side of the plate was hot, but near the centre of the plate it was cold. Schnitzel was warm, veggies cold and the home fries looked as though they... more
Since the original owners sold years ago, there have been a succession of owners who are really trying to preserve the foods and style of cooking from years gone by. This used to be my Dad's go to place for his lunch/dinners. (He even has his own "branded" corner in the restaurant!) It's a shame that they just can't quite... more
not sure how Sauter's can serve such a substantial breakfast for $5!
cheaper to eat here, than to buy food and cook it at home.
Very satisfied
Traditional German food, the staff is extremely nice and welcoming. Pretty much the only people that go here are seniors that eat schnitzel, but the pasta I got one time was really good. It is a tad more expensive than a regular family restaurant but thats because its a really small family business.
Our entire family absolutely loves the Sauter's Inn Restaurant. If you love schnitzel, you have got to try it. Excellent beer as well.
We looked for an Austrian restaurant near our place (probably 15 KM - that's "near" in the suburbs) and we found this one. We've had lunch on a weekend and the food was great but the service not so. It started with trying to seat us too in a squeezed darker corner with 4 tables and all other 4 customers... more
I've been going to Sauter's Inn since I was a little girl with my family and I love it! I have a German heritage and love the authentic atmosphere and delicious food. My boyfriend and I decided to try something different recently. This restaurant is in his neighbourhood and it had a high rating, so we thought we'd give it a try. Great food, friendly European atmosphere with great service at reasonable prices. Best of all it's like dining in Germany.
Great breakfast in Ajax, service can be slow, but the coffee will keep you occupied.
Breakfast Sat & Sun until Noon… too bad Sun they don’t go until 2pm!!!
German/hungarian fare, flavor great, atmosphere "um-pah-pah"
If you like authentic German atmosphere and Cuisine, this is the spot.
Great food, great service, great atmosphere - just a touch pricey.
Love it. Have been there a million times over the last 10 years and have never been disappointed, whether with a large group or just as a couple.
Outstanding German fare - spatzle, wild boar, pork hocks, sausages, schnitzel... I have been several times and have never been disappointed. A homey dining room with family-like services adds to the experience. One of the rare treats in the Durham Region.
