we have been going to Sai Woo for a long time. We usually order the set dinner which is good for about 10 people. Combo, includes soup, fried calamari, fish, crab, veggies/beef, chicken, sweet/sour pork. mushroom/bok choy, etc. The food is always delicious and very tasty. The service is normally good but can can vary, as the evenings can get... more
Everything in this restaurant is old and worn: the decoration, the carpet, the chairs. Ignore all that and go for the food. We have been coming here for decades, and are never disappointed in the food. It is our favorite place for large group celebrations.
We almost always start with the deep fried squid; nobody makes it better. Winter melon...

I wanted to try 'authentic' Chinese food. My friend recommend this place. The food was authentic. Fresh fish, you see them catch it out of the tank (lobster too). The sweet & sour soup I LOVED. The rest was ok. Service was only ok too. At 1st it was good , but at the end we waited over 1/2 hour... more
Love Sai Woo .. like previous posters have suggested...you should ask for chinese menu or style. So many Edmonton restaurants cater to really questionable tastes...the thick sauced noodles etc... Sai Woo does fall prey to that on some western themed dishes as wellBUTand the difinative BUTSai Woo does make 2 of the best dishes in edmonton...in more than Edmonton IMHOthe fried squid is legendary... more
The best fried squid I have ever had the opportunity to taste. If you are looking for ambiance you should stay far away from this place.
For over 25 years our family has been dining with this restaurant and previous restaurants run by the same establishment, and although we have eaten Chinese food all over the world, we have never found another restaurant with the same quality of sauces and food as Sai Woo and we always look forward to another dinner celebration there. Our favourites:... more
If I had to pick, this is Edmonton's best Chinese restaurant, which means Southern Cantonese cuisine. The food is authentic and very well executed. There is good variety on the menu, even the English one. The decor is classic old school Chinatown and the service is attentive, helpful and welcoming. Portions are generous and priced like any other restaurant, so they're good value. Their... more
Sai Woo may have excellent food, sure, but after reading the results of their restaurant inspections on the Alberta Health Services website, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Instances range from cockroach infestations to raw sewage dripping on the food. Anyone interested can check for themselves by looking up "Alberta Health Services restaurant inspections" on the internet.
This is where we go anytime we're too lazy to cook and are craving Chinese food. The quality of the food and service is excellent, and I've never been disappointed here yet! Like Paula K. says, you get huge portions, so definitely your buck's worth, and chances are you'll be taking some home with you too. The restaurant is big and accomodating, and there's usually a table available whether you... more
Saiwoo (Gardens) ranks among the best in Edmonton , if you are looking for Cantonese style food at reasonable prices. Their fried calamari is legendary. You can get authentic food if you ignore the first few pages of the "chicken balls" menu. It is only open for dinner but open late. Crowded on Sundays between 6 and 8:30 pm.
Great food but a bit dingy ... but then again what Chinese restaurant in Chinatown isn't? We had the Szechwan Beef and Chicken and it was amazing! I would definitely recomend it. The chicken wings were okay ... about the same as the salt and pepper wings you would find on your typical wing night ... maybe not worth the... more
Decorations are kinda stuffy, but the food is good. Actual Chinese food, not the c@!%!y north-americanized versions.
Huge portions, excellent service, and bustling, busy restaurant full of all kinds of people is what makes the Sai Woo a wonderful place to dine. Located in Chinatown, the portions are gigantic -- be prepared to take some home with you, along with some of the rice you may order to the side. In these meals, the chicken, beef, or whatever other kind of meat comes with a dish is served in an... more
It's the one and only restaurant in Edmonton I truly miss now that I live in Toronto. I've been going there since I was about 3 years old. Easily the best calamari I've ever had...try the sweet and sour pork, the fried tofu, and the Shanghai noodles too. It's not pretty in there - the Food Network's designers would probably... more
This was a bit of a disappointment for me, though my visit was roughly 2 years ago, so things may have changed.
Great late night food, if you can forgive the lack of prettiness in the room
You HAVE to have the deep fried squid. You'll never have better!!!
