Retro!

This place is cheap and is very retro looking. Whats neat about it is they show strange films. You won't find any new releases. Kinda nice to mix it up!

Old school theatre

Nice change to the big generic movie theatres. They play unusual flicks and there's a coupon in the Entertainment book that makes it a good deal (2 for 1?) can't remember. Love this location and the feel of it.

Cineplex? hmmm... I can't even remember the last time we went and forked out a bag of cash for movies since coming to Rainbow for movie nights or -- Tuesday nights ($5) I would say. Students with a valid student ID pay $7 on other days.

How can you not go to this place for the movies? There's that carnival lighting appeal that draws you into this space along with the old-school movie showtime... more

Great Quaint little theatre in the St Lawrence Market District. for watching every day movies! It's charming and artistic! Regular tickets are $10.00 for adults and onTuesday it's $5.00. I love the fact it's always quiet and you feel like you're sitting in your home movie theatre!!

I love this cinema. $5 tickets on Tuesdays for all ages is as good as it gets. It's free seating so come earlier for the best seats. I only come here on Tuesdays because of the cheap tickets. On other days it's normal price.

The only reason why this place doesn't get 5 stars is because I disliked the popcorn. To be fair, I'm used to caramel popcorn and this place only has butter popcorn.... more

Great place to go on a date the cinema is full of art and cool stuff to look around.. The staff are nice and friendly. The price are cheap specially if you're a student.. Great place to go see a new movie if you're not trying to go to a theatre that's going to be pack and crowded.

Awesome cinema. Cheap tickets and small cozy venue. Ventilation and screen quality may not be 100 percent but I love the feel here and the old fashion vibe . They have modern films playing and there is really no bAd seats since its a small theatre. Good selection Of movie treats and drinks. My go to theatre for sure.

I know...this place is just cray. If you've never been here, prepare yourself. The voyage down the Alice in Wonderland insanely huge staircase to the cinemas is a trip and a half. I don't suffer from vertigo, but each time I hit that descent, I take a second to centre myself. Cellphone reception? Forget about it! Just grab some greasy popcorn from the concession stand and claim a seat in the... more

Wonderful cinema to see a film. Cheap on Tuesdays, only $5.00 per adult admission. Great candy bar, reasonably priced as far as inside theater purchase goes. Saw "Les Miserables" here Christmas day, was a pleasant experience. Screens are of a small size, however one grows used to this as the movie progresses.

If I'm ever in the mood for a movie and find myself in the Toronto core then Rainbow Cinemas is the first place I look to without question.

The price and atmosphere are what keeps me coming back and if you haven't been fortunate enough to see a film here then make this the next place you visit.

The only thing I can think of that I would hope they change would be the seating. Being 6'4" tall,... more

Just your under-average cinema. It's no comparison to Cineplex or AMC but it's still good and well known for their cheap Tuesday movie prices ($5.00)!

This cinema plays movies that have recently came out compared to the Carlton one which plays it a few weeks later sometimes. Hope you're not expecting comfy seats though.

I love this little cinema so much I based my 4th year thesis on it. Really..I did.
There is so much I could write about this place so I will keep it short.

It's cheap as heck, and even cheaper on Tuesdays. It's right next to the glorious St. Lawrence Market so you could potentially have the most interesting dinner and a movie date night. Or even better on sundays why not go vintage shopping at... more

Overall: Really well priced for new releases, somewhat basic-style theatres

Location: This theatre's located near St. Lawrence Market, adjacent to Hot House and Metro. It's about a 10 minute walk from King Subway Station.

Movies: Has most new releases. All theatres are pretty similar. They use Texas Instruments DLP projectors.

Prices: Cheap and good
Tuesday: $5
Seniors and Children 3-13: $6... more

Free refills on large popcorn - need I say more.
Oh and they offer free topping.
This place is amazing. It has the feel of what going to the movies use to feel like before Ciniplex started to rape you every time you walked through the door. The screens are not massive and it does not have the best seating but the staff are super friendly and helpful.

I have a soft spot for this place. Its a blast to the past, and I just love the ambiance and atmosphere. Sure the screens are small, the sound isnt the same as you are going to get at a newer theatre, but its cheap, and you can pretty much bring a picnic. Its just a fun and cozy place.

Y'all know I love my deals. For that reason alone, Rainbow Cinemas FTW!
Tuesdays are $5 for errybody - bring yo mama, bring yo kids, bring yo boss.
No Student ID required. And if you try to get a student discount, they won't let you. Cause it's already so darn cheap.

Otherwise, regular days are $7 and $6 with Student ID!

I LIKE that you have Tuesday movie for $5. That price can't be beat!

HOWEVER, know that the screens aren't that big and the seats are very limited when it comes to blockbusters. Watch olde movies at this theatre, not movies you reaaally care about! Like, don't come to Rainbow to watch Avatar 2. Don't come for a 2+ hour movie when the seats are like sitting on bricks. If you end up having to... more

This is my usual location to go to, so I make a point of doing my shopping at the Market then heading in for an afternoon movie. The prices are slowly creeping up. The concession stand is still way over priced. The staff are nice. The bathrooms are clean.

When you walk into this place it's easy to pass judgment quickly because it's old and small when you walk in. However, seeing a movie for $7.50 nowadays is almost impossible... $5 on Tuesdays.
Each theater is somewhat small, about 120-130 seats, and the screens are smaller than you might expect also. But the picture and sound were both great and the size of the room/screen didn't detract from... more

This quaint little movie theater has actually grown on me. Sure it doesn't feature all the razzmatazz of theaters at Yonge-Dundas or the ones on Richmond, but it has a really charming, homey feel to it, and it's super close to my apartment. You get a great movie going experience without all the frills and the fuss.

Every year I feel like Toronto is becoming more and more expensive.

If you're ghetto fabulous like me and appreciate the finer things in life, but also know when to pinch for some savings then Rainbow is the cinema for you.

If you do not love Rainbow Cinema, we will never be besties.

This place is old, dirty, has uncomfortable seats, they only have popcorn, and it's five-frickin-bucks to see NEW movies on Tuesdays. Oh right, it's also next to beautiful St. Lawrence Market. Like, come on.

This is the theatre that we normally go to most often. You really can't complain about the cheap ticket price! The films are current and the theatre itself has an indie feel.

I'm a super big fan of this place considering I'm always on a budget... I just moved here less than a year ago and it's almost the only theatre I go to in the city. We usually see the flicks a few weeks after they come out -- so the theatre isn't usually that crowded.

Cheap movies! One of the few places I will go when I want to escape and watch a movie on a day off alone. Also the frequency of odd experiences, somehow add to the day/evening.

In the evening, there is usually a staff member playing the piano in the lobby. Some of the negatives: Older theatre, a bit dirty, smallish screen.

I know some of the other reviewers have complained about cramped seating and small screens, but I feel I need to remind them that they paid next to nothing for their ticket (especially on a Tuesday! $5?!?! It's cheap, and it surprisingly gets the latest movie releases. Sorry the secret is out. This is the place to go if you're on a budget and you're in downtown Toronto.

Now granted the venue is out of date no doubt compared to Scotiabank Theatre or AMC however if you're thinking of renting or watching a movie this is almost the same cost.

I am not a fan of this cinema. I guess their matinee Tuesdays draw a crowd here. I still can't justify watching an action flick here for non action movies it might not matter . The seats are not comfy and the sound system and projection is not exactly audio/videophile material. I would rather wait for the weekend and watch the matinee show for 6$ at AMC Dundas.

What a fantastic cinema.

We come here for cheap Tuesday's $5, the smaller lines, the old cinema feel and the respectful, adult patrons.

You can take your own food, and get a free re-fill on your popcorn. They are the only cinema that has popcorn shake and the staff are lovely.

Cheap as chips, even on a normal day.

Any movie worth seeing is here.

Parking is generally available.

Very decent little movie theatre for the price. It doesn't have the largest screen, seats, or sound system but in the end you get what you pay for. The price well more than makes up for it, so I'd say that because of that, this is my fav movie theatre in Toronto thus far.

Rainbow Cinema takes the stress out of seeing a movie. You don't have to fight through throngs of people to buy tickets and the theatres themselves are usually less than half full. It's also nice to get away from the bastions of consumerism that are AMC and Scotiabank. When you go there you have this kind of "we're all in this together" feeling.

You are also allowed to bring in outside food... more

Came here for a movie after dinner. Very eclectic theatre. First and foremost when you enter the lobby it has art on display cases. You then proceed downstairs to the actual cinema area... The walls are lined with graffiti of movie characters... Very strange. The theatres are all very tiny and everything is just outdated. I would definitely opt for the more modern and spacious cinemas.

I used to think of Rainbow as the out-of-date theatre in St. Lawrence Market -- not in my neighbourhood and lacking the technology needed to experience certain modern films to their full potential. But now the reasons I wasn't so initially thrilled with Rainbow are why I love it.

I'm not really into seeing movies in IMAX, and I'm definitely not down with 3-D either. A good film is a good film... more

I love to see movies here. It's half the price of a normal theater and you still get to see the latest releases. I'm not interested in paying extra for a slightly more comfortable chair or a slightly bigger movie screen. Just give me a place to sit and a movie I want to see.

This place is kitschy cute and cheap, and that's why I like it. You can go to the cineplex (for $5 more!) and get the same experience no matter what coast you`re on. What's great about Rainbow is that it's unique: the dated decor, small screen and seating area, and the Pong-era intro animation made me chuckle. I'm not old enough to know nostalgia for pre-cineplex times but part of me wishes I was.

Best popcorn in the city bar none ( the worst is AMC)

Not sure if they use a syrup mix for their colas, but it is the coldest and best tasting Diet Pepsi anywhere in the city including 7-11.

The pre movie animation is funny and unique, not sure if they were going for the pre CGI feel, but it does give you sense of nostalgia for going to the movies in the 70's.

Who cares if the screen is smaller and the theater smells a little like wet dog on rainy days? The S.O. and I have seen four movies here so far. That's a combined savings of $64* versus going to one of those mega-mall cinema chains with screaming babies in the audience.**
