Saint John's BEST VALUE for $$$$$$, whether it's the mouth watering porterhouse & striploin steaks, the BBQ chicken and rib specials, maybe a burger, or perhaps a seafood special... Over the last 25 years the Portland Pub has tuned into exactly what Saint John needs when it comes to pub grub. Affordable, Dependable, and Delicious (and not necessarily in that order!!!!)... Daily specials, best... more
I am a Realtor and I just adore going to Portland Pub after a long day of house tours. It feels so homey. Yes at times the special events that go on are not announced that often but in the big scheme of things it is still a good food, good people place.
Never had a bad experience at the Portland Pub, not sure what the others are talking about. Food is fine and the staff are good.
We booked our annual get-together for a large group. It was my suggestion to use the Portland Pub, which turned out to be a huge mistake. We were not told of any events going on there that night when we booked for about 15-20 individuals. When you go to a pub, you do expect some music/noise, but nothing prepared us for what we would endure. There was a charity auction going on right behind us on the 'other side' of the pub. The auctioneer was using a microphone turned up full blast and yelling into it simultaneously. We were right near speakers and could not even hear the person next to us. We get together and meet once a year so this was extremely disappointing. When we asked the waitress if he could maybe 'not' use the microphone as it was extremely abrasive and we couldn't even catch up on what we'd all been up to at all - it was even hurting our ears, it was THAT loud - her snottily-delivered response was, "Well they're here every week and I'm not doing anything. They can do what they want." I wasn't saying don't have the auction, just not yell AND use a microphone - pick one or the other.
No offer of anything other than that. There were even some sort of barriers there they could've closed to block off some of the noise between the two sections of the pub and she refused to do that as well. Nice.
The kindness continued after our visit - we all left much earlier than we had planned and the night was pretty much a wash. I felt badly because I had mentioned the pub as a good central location for us, etc and the food was usually decent, etc., so I wrote a letter to the manager to let him/her know about our experience. To this day (almost a year later), I have not received a response from this place of business.
So the message we got was: you group of teachers and your business mean nothing to us. I refuse to go back to the pub ever - this is not how you conduct business.
The food is wholesome, tasty & quick. Jennifer & staff are very welcoming. Been many times and still will keep doing so.
Went there today (Sept 17, 2013) for supper as it was in walking distance of my hotel. Got a quick beer but the food waitress was more concerned with taking money from the regulars it seemed than in taking my food order. 15 minute wait to order food is not acceptable in my mind. Food was just Ok. There are... more
We arrived in St. John, NB a little late after a half-day on the road, and this establishment was recommended to us by our hotel personnel. It was clean, service was good, and the steak that my wife ordered was both excellent and priced right. I had the Greek salad and baked potato, and both were done well and very... more
I just worked a 9 hour shift and wanted a nice, quick home cooked meal. I ordered a steak and mashed potatoes and really all I wanted was mashed potatoes. Got it picked up by a local delivery company only to open my food to a burnt steak ( I ordered medium) and fries smothered in gravy. I didn't bother... more
Just got back from having breakfast at the pub, we had steak ( cooked just the way it was ordered)
eggs, toast and grilled home fries. Service was excellent, and the food hot and yummy. Now that summer is over we are back to our Sunday ritual, breakfast at the pub. Anytime I have been to the pub, I get...

There was no way this bar was interested in making any money....we practically had to beg to be served a second beer. Our food order was slow which would have been OK if the staff had been even slightly attentive. I think the food server and the bartender were at odds but also noticed other tables getting their orders before... more
My parents are crazy about this place and we've been to it on numerous occasions. The food is nothing to rave about. The service, although the staff are so friendly, is absolutely slow. The atmosphere is that of a typical dive bar.
I like the Portland Pub. I like its lack of pretention, lack of ostentation. Ok, so it's in a strip mall, it's true. And it's not going to set the world on fire in any culinary sense, but I don't go to places with "pub" in the name for that. What it does have is a genuine, down-home, slight hole... more
I went to the Portland Pub and yesterday and noticed an increase in customer service from the servers than usual. Keep it up=:) This is a great place to have a reasonably price pub fare and filled with "colourful" characters to people watch. Out of our three orders, two of them were wrong so they still need to work on... more
Not stuffy and a whole lot of excellent food. If your looking to get pampered, not the place, but if you want to relax, have great food and enjoy life the Portland Pub is the place
1. This is a storefront in a strip mall. Expect the opposite of the picture posted.
2. When I walked in, the waitress, standing 10' away at a register, purposely would not look at me. I kept staring and finally said, "Can I just sit anywhere?" She nodded.
3. While no one was rude to me, regulars get a distinctly...

Just moved to Saint John, and was told to check this place out. The waitress was rude, the place was dirty, we felt like we were bothering her. I wanted steak because, we were told it was a good place to get steak. But ordered burger and fries instead just so we could get the heck out of there faster.... more
We had lobster rolls which were decent enough and came with a generous pile of tasty fries, and were a bargain at $10. Staff was friendly but preoccupied and slow. And there's the weird thing where the waitress doesn't do the cocktails so you have to wait for the drink guy which in our case meant going thirsty for the... more
The food is good & the staff are very friendly.
Always good & very quick service.
If you are a regular the staff remember what you drink & how you like your steak etc.
This is an ok local pub. The food is diner style not so much pub style. I would go there for food not drinks. Too many hammered locals at 10 am. Disconnected servers. The drink guy comes around on his own and you pay him apart from the waitress. Order triple of what you want because you will never see... more
Little pub nestled in the heart of the north end. Wide variety to choose from. Steaks, fish, chicken or fresh homemade burgers.
I was there for a steak and stein a few weekends ago. It was horrible!
Girstthe waitress was rude when we told her someone doesn't eat steak. She said, I have too many substitutes
Then when the food came (about 1 hour and 20 mins later), the fries were raw, veggies soggy and steak was right fatty.
My boyfriend told...

We decided to try this restaurant based on Tripadvisor reviews and were disappointed. Our welcome into the restaurant was an afterthought and very matter of fact. The service was not only poor throughout, but very, very slow. We felt that the waitress couldn't care less whether we were there or not - we appeared to be unwelcome. Certainly the poorest... more
I had heard so many great things about this place that we decided to try it out. We tried twice. The first time, we waited more than 20 minutes for service before walking out. I would understand if the place was busy, but there were only 2 other customers, and they weren't eating, only drinking. The waitress was too busy... more
This pub not only serves great sandwiches and fries, but they have really good steaks. They carry several kinds of beer. Moosehead beer is brewed in St. John's
they are having great 25th year specials.
Excellent liver & onions, good fish & chips, excellent sirloin steak
This little pub is about 10 minutes from the motel but well worth the short drive on the freeway to get to it. Had a delicious steak and the MooseHead Light Beer is excellent. Typical pub interior but the food was served hot and quickly, beer was frosty and our waitress was friendly. Can't get better then that !
The service was fast and the food was excellant. The price was also right!
There has been a party there every time I've gone. Portland pub serves great food and drink. Try the mussels, you won't regret it.
Pub. That says it all. it has that feel and the food is your typical above average for what you pay for. Great place for a lunch or a light dinner.
Quaint little pub, seemed to be a local hangout-which added character. The local beer is Moosehead, the red type was very good.
We stopped in here for lunch one day, making the effort to try out different places in our city. There is a long bench seat that frames the entire 1st dining area. Try not to get stuck on that side of the table, it is not the most comfortable seat. We ordered a Reuben and a club, large portions, greasy... more

Have been here several times over the years and have always found the Striploin quite good and very reasonably priced.
I have had some very poor service although the food wasn't bad.
