My wife and I had a very decent dining experience at Pipa's the last time so we had purchased a Groupon with the intent of trying more things on the menu. I was really hoping to try the fish stew and we loved the dessert from the last time.
When I called to reserve I found out the name of...

Had a groupon that was purchased last week. Visited the location on Friday of the weekend. 'Pipa' is closed and is now renamed something else. The menu is no longer the portuguese/ brazilian mix. Despite it being a Friday evening, the renamed restaurant appeared empty. Asked the person at the entrance why they would have groupons posted when they knew... more
Our waiter seemed to have no idea what was on the menu, and my friend ordered several different cocktails only to be told over and over that they were out of something so would she like to try something else? We started with the pao de giajo, which are hot cheesy buns which are apparently gluten free - they were... more
This was my third time to Pipa, although it has been over 1.5 years since my last visit. I don't know what happened to the interesting authentic menu of my previous visits, but the current menu is very small and has lost many of the Portugese and Brazilian offerings that used to be on it. My favourite item - the... more
If you have grown tired of fish and chips, then give this a try. It offers a creative Iberian-based menu. Indeed, tasteful options -- tapas and entrees -- that my party enjoyed (save for the salt cod). I had spaghetti and meatballs and I was really pleased with it. Quite simply --- recommended.
Quiet Monday evening meal with friends. Three of the items we ordered were not available that evening, although the server didn't mention this until we ordered. Food took some time arriving given that we were the only patrons in the restaurant, but dishes were hot and the food was quite good on the whole. The Brazilian fish stem was very... more
I had never heard of Pipa and tried it as part of a Groupon offer. I have read a lot of the other review of the place and would agree with the positive ones. It's funny how we all can have such varying opinions.
Though I ate there almost a year ago, I still remember the server, Sammy. The place...

I have been to the Pipa Restaurant twice now, once in the evening and once for lunch. Both times we found the food to be delicious with flavours very different from our usual eating habits. All items were served in a timely manner and the waiters were very attentive helpful. The decor is from old Halifax, stone walls, and the... more
I would say, Pipa Restaurant, is a hidden gem at downtown Halifax! It's a small family-owned restaurant, located at the heart of the downtown area. Its within walking distance to the local theatre and Halifax Metro Centre.
We were dinning at Pipa on December 14th, before catching our flight back to Toronto. On our previous three day staying in the...

Four of us went for a birthday dinner. Firstly we went there specifically for fish stew - were out. Seafood rice them - out! Took 2 hours to get our meal! Olive oil on the table so we thought we would get bread while waiting - nope! If we didn't buy Groupon we would have left! Steak was done incorrectly.... more
One evening I was surveying the numerous restaurants on Argyle Street, not far from the Prince George where I was staying, in search of a light dinner. The menu board at the entrance of this Portuguese/Brazilian restaurant listed "vegetable stew" as one of the specials of the day. Thinking that this would be perfect for a late dinner I decided... more
We weren't too sure about this restaurant but we're glad we ate here. We were looking for a restaurant that served fish but didn't think we'd end up in a restaurant that served Portuguese/Brazilian cuisine.
I chose the Halibut Stew and it was very tasty with lots of fish and flavour. My friend said the Pipa's Spaghetti & Meatballs was...

Walking by the restaurant earlier in the day, we noticed the sign "Portuguese/Brazilian Cuisine"...that's all it took for me to stop and, after reading their menu, decide it would be where we ate for dinner. Great and extensive Appetizer listing - Order their Chorizio which came aflame in a dish with side dish of mustard, sauteed onions and toasted thin... more
My husband and I decided to try Pipa as it was offered on a Groupon Deal. When we arrived at the restaurant we were warmly greeted and decided to sit outside. Our waiter offered us drinks and gave us menus.
When he returned with our water, I ordered the Chicken Piri Piri and my husband ordered the Lobster Empada with...

I ate brunch at this restaurant in Halifax as I wandered in out if the rain. Staff were super friendly and accommodating. Food was fantastic. Had the fish stew and the Portuguese sandwich. Portions were tasty and HUGE!
Will come back every time I return to Halifax.
What a great find - we stumbled on this placeon friday night - I had low expectations, given past meals in Hali - good but not great...but was blown away. The space was dark and cozy with a full crowd on a friday night night...lots of energy and local vibe...definitely not a quiet or sleepy spot.
Our server was great...

We had a great meal at this charming restaurant in the old Carleton Hotel building. I had the Seafood Rice; can't remember the name of the stew my companion had but both were very delicious. We shared Avocado Creme Brulee for dessert, very different flavour but very good. I would definitely go back.
If you are looking for a good restaurant, you have got to try Pipa. I love this place! We went for dinner and our server Sammy, who had a great sense of humour, recommend that we try the kale soup and fish stew Moqueca de Peixe, which was fantastic. Their cheese and cassava bread is like nothing you have ever... more
The service was very good, food very tasty. The restaurant has a cozy feeling, old and rustic charm. I ordered the Chicken Piri Piri. Free range chicken cooked to perfection, lovely assortment on my plate, salad, rice, vegetables, chicken with fresh tomato chunky sauce. Loved it and would order it again. The menu is varied and unique, lots of seafood.... more
Hadn't seen any reviews for this place but was excited when we saw they had chicken piri-piri on the menu. Having tried this dish in Portugal we thought we knew what to expect. Alarm bells should have rang straight off when we walked into the place and found no-one there to greet us. We waited a few minutes before anyone... more
Complete garbage I must say. The service is horrible and when I asked to speak to the manager to inform them of the rude attitude of the server I was informed that the server was "one" of the managers? i told her to get someone higher than her so she left and came back and told us that the manager... more
Pipa's is a very unique restaurant in Halifax and situated in the entertainment district of Halifax on Argyle. The restaurant has a room to host a great event...a must try
Went there on a Saturday Afternoon arrived around 3 pm. Ordered two dinner items and two appitizers. Food was good. Service was a little slow and even though there was not a lot of other patrons there was no flow to the meal. When the final bill arrived presented my Groupon coupon and was told that this was not valid... more
I recently had dinner at Pipa for the second time and, again, it did not disappoint. The service is great, the decor is quaint, and the food is like nothing I have found any where else in Halifax.
My boyfriend and I had seafood and rice and pork & clams for our mains and tried the red wine sangria and...

What a great experience! The Portuguese & Brazilian menu selections are authentic and varied, prepared with care, and are full of flavour. Not only that, but, unlike most Halifax restaurants, you actually get good-sized portions for your money - and everything is reasonably-priced anyway. One of the best features is the extensive variety of appetizers offerred, all of which are... more
Seek out this gem on Argyle Street for interesting and delicious food. We started our dinner with a variation of a Mohito - try it, delicious! Then we sampled a few of the starters including the scallops, arugula salad, grilled sardines and caldo verde (a potato and kale soup). They were all delicious and nicely presented, but to my mind... more
I've been here twice and look forward to returning. What we had of the Portuguese/Brazilian menu was different and delicious. I found the staff exceedingly friendly and helpful both times. Where we sat the atmosphere was intimate, warm and cozy. It took longer than average to get our food but it was worth the wait.
We really enjoyed the variety and taste of our food. We shared various entrees and appetizers and loved them all. Food was clean tasting.
Pipa is a restaurant tucked away on the far end of Argyle St. It is the only restaurant that I know of that serves Portuguese and Brazlian style foods. I went with friends one of whom had a gluten allergy. This restaurant has loads for the gluten-free diner starting with the bread that is served before your meal arrives. I... more
I visited this restaurant for the first time with a friend for drinks on the deck on a Thursday evening after work. We had a pitcher of red Portuguese sangria....delicious! Not the best Portuguese food I've ever had but the atmosphere and service was good. It is a nice little restaurant with a lot of charm. The sangria was really good as was the wine. But the food was just so so. But still had a good time.
Few weeks ago I was walking Dtwn Halifax with a Frnd of mine ( well 1st date) we stopped by the patio and started reading the menu then the server came up to us and he was extremely friendly he explained every item and he asked us to come in. Went here twice, first time foa a selection of tapas/wine and 2nd time for a meal. The small dishes/salads were all great. Decent wine list well-priced. For the mains we had the fish stew(very good) and the feijoada(never been to Brazil, seemed good but cant really judge). Good, not over-the -top service both times, would go again.
a week ago me and few frnds went there and we had dinner, the food was great as well as the desserts, not to mention the selections of ports. we were served by a dark skin guy by the name of "sammy" I think, he was one of the best servers I ever seen, he knew what kind wine and... more
First visit to Pipa's and would not go back. Service was slow and price was too high for the quality of the food served. Husband had the pork and clams and the meat was very dry and tough with not a lot of flavour to the sauce. I had arugula salad which was ok but figs were dried. Wine by... more
Wish I could tell you how the food was at Pipa, but they never gave us any.

They don't have a very large wine list for a Portugese restaurant; however their selection of house reds is quite appetizing. I worked up the street from Pipa for over a year and never got adventurous enough to try out their Brazilian food. I went in the other day and I was glad I did! We had the Mussels Malagueta, Papa P's Poutine (with Lamb sauce), and the Mushroom Escondidinho.
The muscles were the tastiest muscles I've ever had- the Parmesan cheese grated on top was a nice touch. Their Poutine was very unique,...

Are you like me, and you value quiet as well as good food? I really find it difficult to pay for a good meal out and a glass of wine, only to be subjected to a families 'learning to dine' experience. I feel like it takes something away from the food.

A few weeks ago I was about to write an excellent review on the restaurant but, unfortunately, my opinion has changed completely since we decided to have our New Year Eve's party at PIPA. We dined at Pipa's with friends, on Friday, November 11th., with an incentive to try something different, based on a Groupon purchase for a party of 4. The service was very slow, after being told to sit "wherever we like" it took a server over 20 minutes to appear for drink orders and another 20 minutes to order after dropping off our drinks.

We had seen Pipa advertised and were interested in trying it out (we had an exchange student from Portugal several years ago and had been to a much different Portuguese place in Hamburg) but almost did not go there for dinner the last night in Halifax because we did not feel that hungry. We were welcomed as if we just arrived home. This family run restaurant provided us with outstanding tastes of Portuguese and Brazilian food. great prices on food and wines service was very friendly and prompt.
I will be visiting the restaurant again on our next visit to Halifax.
Went there with friends for the second time last Friday. The lobster soup was great. Very inventive use of ingredients. Simple but tasty and not the same creamy stuff that everyone can do in the east coast. A bit generous with the vinaigrette on the fig salad so you may want to have that on the side. I couldnt have... more
We picked this restaurant purely by luck, as it was one that was still serving dinner at 9:30 in the evening, and from the outside, you would never expect to find the amazing building inside ! I wasn't sure what to expect from Brazilian and Portuguese food, so I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors and spices. I tried the Portuguese-style pork medallions, which came with a nice fresh salad too. Including my drink, the whole lunch cost less than $11. I love the traditional tiles and decor, and our waitress was very knowledgeable. I'll definitely go back to try it again.
