Been going there for years. Atmosphere is great and the food has always been top-notch.
While staying in St John's, the locals we were with took us out to an amazing supper at Oliver's. We has a whole bunch of appetizers from the ocean, and they were all wonderful. The crab cakes and scallops are a must. Next time I'm in Saint John, I'll be going back.
Went with colleagues for dinner. Great newfoudland specialties (cod, scallops). Had a great time!
Great food and friendly staff. A great lunch experience - especially for a business lunch - very professional.
Oliver's is my favorite restaurant in St. John's though I usually only get there on a special occasion. On Thursday, May 29, I took my adult daughters there for lunch. It was the first time either of them had been there. Between us we ordered and all tried the: soup of the day (Lobster Bisque); cod chowder; cod tongue appetizer... more
Excellent, affordable choice for lunch. Service was friendly and efficient, sea food chowder really hit the spot.
Enjoyed the whole experience of Oliver's. Only problem was that the appetizers were very pricey for the little amount you received. Main meal was very salty for my taste.
Great variety and selection of spectacular food. Served hot and delicious. Serving staff are very attentive and helpfully. I love this restaurant.
Great atmosphere - Nice, quiet and intimate. The food, as usual was fantastic. The server was very friendly and attentive. The Newfoundland Berry Cheesecake is to die for. Great place for couples to enjoy a nice meal. It is my favorite place to eat in St. John's.
I previously reviewed Oliver's after visiting it a number of times and noted that the quality of their food and service had gone downhill....I am excited to say that since then friend's of ours wanted to go there when heading out to brunch and it was delicious. After 2-3 visits since then the quality of their food seems to be... more
Had a work lunch here recently- really enjoyed the food I ordered, and the food ordered by colleagues looked great as well! I had the seafood chowder and pan fried cod. Looking forward to coming back with my husband so we can enjoy dinner or lunch with a nice wine selection as the wine list looks great. But of course,... more
This place is one of my favourite date restaurants. The food is consistently fantastic, and the service is always great. It's just big enough to not feel cramped, and small enough that the staff can be attentive. Always a go to when looking to impress.
Nice restaurant at Water Street, owners managed to have a tiny space with a great ambience combined with superior cousine. Professional staff and great service. Had dinner with some colleagues and really enjoyed the service.
Showed up without a reservation but were accommodated with a table. Service was friendly and helpful. Food was good as always. Can't go wrong by eating here.
We just went back to St. John's Newfoundland for my 55th birthday March 2014, my girlfriend mentioned for us to do my birthday dinner at Oliver's, the service, food and wine was perfect. My next trip to Newfoundland Oliver's will be on my places to eat. Thank you to the staff of Oliver's for making my birthday dinner the best.
My husband and I have travelled a lot, and recently moved home to Newfoundland and have been on a search for the best mussels in town- I think we found them at Olivers! Went to Olivers for Valentine's Day dinner with 2 other couples- it is a smaller, more intimate restaurant, perfect for a cozy datenight dinner, but also good... more
Awesome place, excellent food. Been there many times and I was never disappointed. The atmosphere is great. THE STAFF ARE FRIENDLY. The seafood platter is to die for. The Newfoundland berry cheesecake is out of this world.
You know, I just left St John's a little while ago on my way back home. We had lunch at Olivers today and I knew I was going to write about it on Trip Advisor but to preserve the memory in my mind before it lessened, I wrote it on the airplane and now I'm going to paste it in.... more
Only ate here for lunch one day but it was tasty. Had a nice glass of wine with chowder soup and a sandwich. Service was good. Price was a little high, but a nice and cozy little spot made it worth it.
Since relocating to St. John's a number of months ago we've been impressed at the high quality restaurants here and last evening we were lucky enough to dine at Oliver's Restaurant on Water Street. Last time we tried to go there we couldn't get a reservation.
Oliver's is smaller than most restaurants seating maybe 50 people. The service was terrific,...

My family and I are regulars at Oliver's and we pride in this exceptional service and magnificent tasting food. The filet is my favourite and we always have a baked goat cheese and they're both to die for. I think it is extremely hard to master a good seafood chowder but the chef and kitchen staff at Oliver's does an... more
50 seats. Across from the working shipyard, a beehive of activity.
Seared Scallops - pesto, pinapple curry - perfect texture,
Seafood Fettucine Primavera - a lot of fish and seafood. Very tasty, not drowned out by the sauce. Two huge chunks of garlic bread. Other dishes looked great - steaks, additional seafood dishes, pastas. A chicken special described by the...

Myself and my boyfriend went to your restaurant last night for my Birthday. I have to say, what a disappointment. I had heard good things from a few people which is why I chose to go there. We had the baked goat's cheese to start and the bruschetta was hardly cut up. Maybe that is just the style of the... more
Got downtown on a Sunday and realized we'd hadn't really eaten yet. Oliver's sign was the first one we saw and the Toutons with blueberry molasses was a draw for sure. Waitress was friendly and forward. I waivered between two dishes and she decided for me and that was right what I needed at the time. Eggs Benedict with goats... more
Located in the centre of St. John's, Oliver's is the perfect choice for a romantic dinner. Restaurant manager Laura Costigan was our waitress and we appreciated her straightforward attitude and friendliness. The creamy seafood chowder and the crab cakes got the taste buds fired up although a multigrain roll would have worked better than plain bread with the chowder. The... more
I ate there twice during my stay last week in Saint John's. Had great seafood, and fantastic spinach salad. Worth stopping for sure, you can even buy hand made wool socks at the bar!
Walking past, this looks nothing special. Inside is decorated well, the hostess very welcoming. The menu has a managable amount of choices and there are some good daily specials. Portion size good. the food was a little heavy on the cream side. Overall a nice expereince
First it's a cosy place, very comfortable but most importantly the food is good! The prices are fair, there's a variety, and the wait staff is friendly. Would definitely recommend.
Although the restaurant is small, it is clean and cosy. Staff is efficient and friendly. The presentation of the food is very appealing. My steak was cooked perfectly as ordered. The garlic mashed potatoes were very good. Brussel sprouts could have been cooked a little longer. The atmosphere was unhurried and we enjoyed a long leisurely dinner. It was lovely.... more
We were looking for a good place for dinner, our first night in St John's. Oliver's had a lot of pretty good reviews and the menu looked pretty good. We didn't have reservations but were able to get a table.
The place does fill up pretty fast at dinner time. The servers were pretty good, very prompt and greeted people...

I have just returned from a lovely evening at Oliver's Restaurant, where I had dinner with some colleagues. The ambiance is very good, the server was pleasant, and the food was outstanding. I have had my fair share of halibut, but the dish (pan fried with a velouté sauce) was outstanding. The fish was so fresh it was practically wiggling... more
Went as part of a group. Servers, kitchen staff were excellent did a great job accommodating 80 of us. Had the seafood platter, all the fish was done to perfection. Try it you;ll like it.
Eat here Oct 2013. appetizer almond crusted goat cheese etc was so so do not recommend this, however the entries were really good.Hard to find a good place, not a greasy spoon, to eat open in St. John,s on a mid Oct Sunday evening. This place is on Water Street and not far form our hotel which was a plus.
This is one of my favorite places to dine for a casual fine dining experience. Food is consistently excellent. Staff pleasant and accommodating. Ambiance is warm cozy and quaint. Recommend a reservation as it is small.......but that is part of the charm. Love to go there on cold or rainy nights which makes it even warmer! Always feel good value... more
I normally love Oliver's. Love the atmosphere and food usually.
Nice and quiet but this time a really loud group came in and spoiled the atmosphere.
First time I had steak there. Would not recommend. Many other good choices.
The first time we tried to go for dinner we were a group of 5 and the waiting time was one and a half hours, so we didn’t stay. But the ambiance looked great and people seem to be enjoying their meals, so my wife and I decided to return a couple of days later. We weren’t very hungry so... more
Food was fantastic. Wait staff were knowledgeable and friendly. Cozy and warm, looks pretentious but isn't. I'm a prairie boy so I had the seafood platter and it was great. Crab Cakes as an appetizer were excellent.
Extensive wine list.
Good, good, good.
We arrived without a reservation and were told the restaurant was full and politely asked to come back in 45 minutes. When we did a table in a good location was waiting for us. The service was very attentive and friendly, the menu was extensive and the food excellent and well presented. Prices were in line with St. John’s better... more
We stopped in here for an impromptu brunch and loved it. The frittata was delicious, the coffee hot and service friendly.
Really liked this cozy little place. The food choices were very good and the portions were almost too much. At first the service was lacking but eventually it came around. Definitely recommend to foodies that want something local.
On par with St. John's prices, the wine list was excellent. I thought my wife's haddock was a bit overcooked and dry (she liked it). My Lobster was good but not spectacular. The restaurant itself was very nice. the tables were not crammed together as you find with many places in Toronto
I spent a week in the city and this restaurant provided the best service and food so far. I took seafood platter and it was delicious, even could be a bit bigger :) . Stu was hearty and tasty too. they have three waitress for a small room, so you do not need to wait.
We were at Oliver's on August 4, 2013. We had the cod with salsa verde which was so delicious but my husband was still hungry so he ordered another salad and I had room for dessert. The cheesecake is to die for! The waitress was especially helpful and pleasant. We would definitely eat here again!
So happy to find this wonderful restaurant.....seafood is great and staff goes above and beyond for you!
It was our last day of a 3 week holiday in Nfld and we wanted to have a nice lunch. Through Trip Advisor, we found Oliver's and were very pleased with our choice. Service was quick and pleasant. My husband had a lamb burger while I had a chicken crepe with white wine cream sauce, both with sweet potato fries. Delicious!
We learned about Oliver's from several sources, and after our first meal at this delightful restaurant we couldn't resist going back (two times) to try other selections on their innovative menu. We particularly enjoyed their fish and seafood selections. Never disappointed. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. Kudos to the chefs!!! Make a reservation - we saw a number... more
We had a late Sunday lunch at Oliver's Restaurant because it was close to our hotel and it looked cosy. We had a wonderful waitress who was happy to help with questions, knowledgeable, chatty without being imposing and efficient. We ordered a starter and two mains for two of us to share. And our waitress kindly suggested we get all... more
Joined a group of business colleagues for dinner. People arrived over a period of time and they were pretty good about getting drinks and serving the new arrivals. Appetizers arrived fairly quickly but I found the crab cakes fairly bland and average. The must have forgotten to place my order since it arrived much later with apologies. It was an... more
One of the best Chef's in St.Johns. And it is always done right and spotless. Favours jump off the plates. The only thing wrong with this place is the service and the wait. Took the halibut special of the day and though it was well presented ,i thought that a price of 21 dollars was pretty steep for the 3 ounces portion.Come on this is St Jonn's.When I paid for the meal it was showing as a buffet meal 3. Gives me the impression I was took advantage of. Like one the previous... more
tiny little restaurant; great service; one of the sweetest waitresses ever. Cod dish was ok; but my husband's steak was perfect. Thank God we didn't request "more pepper", or we might've lost it! One of the longest pepper mills I have ever seen! LOL Lovely spot; make reservations.
Second visit here for me and it was a good as the last time. I had the Crab Cakes which were lovely and my husband had the Borsch and that was really good too! Seafood Platter was spot on and my husband had the Halibut Special, followed all this with a pudding share the Crepe with Vanilla Ice Cream. Very... more
The Best lightly breaded calamari I ever had. I just tasted one from someone else's order but wish I had ordered it. Is on the pricier end... more
My husband and I were hoping that they would have a fresh fish on the menu and lucky for us they had halibut as an addition the evening we were there.
It was herb crusted and delicious. It was a perfect sized portion served with a tasty rice pilaf and grilled vegetables.
Service was great.
I would recommend a reservation....

Intimate restaurant in the heart of downtown St. John's, Newfoundland. Operating for over 15 years, Oliver's is a favourite for great seafood, steaks, fresh pastas and mouthwatering housemade desserts. Featuring intimate booths, warm colours and a fantastic wine list.
