Marias has a wonderful facility, typically decorated in the greek style with wonderful atmosphere. Unfortunately, neither the food nor the service live up to this setting or atmosphere! If you go to either of the two restaurant locations--West 4th or Denman Street in Vancouver, you will the find the service obtuse and disinterested. The food often takes forever to get to your table, even if the restaurant is not particular busy. Explanations or apologies or acknowledgement of the delay is hard to come by, and one gets the feeling nobody cares if you come back or not, because apparently, there are plenty more customers like you out there that will show up for one meal before deciding to take their money elsewhere! If you order take out or delivery, you will be given a standard time estimate that bears no resemblance to reality, and you will be given an equally stock set of excuses when your food does not materialize in any reasonable time frame! If you wish to avoid russian roulette with your restaurant or delivery experience, avoid patronizing this business!
Maria's Taverna is the most classic version of the city's Greek eateries-the menu features the usual superfluous baked pasta and pizza options (ah, the Greek classics), the red wine is always served way too warm, and everybody seems to be enjoying themselves, regardless. Basics such as chicken souvlaki ($16.95) and saganaki ($7.95) are better than the competition and the Cornish game hen... more

Authentic Greek Fare
Both of Maria's locations manage to deliver an authentic Mediterranean look and feel without being cliché. There are, of course, the mandatory splashes of blue and white painted trim, mimicking the colours of the Greek flag, and pretty pictures of Santorini. It is a Greek restaurant in Vancouver after all. The Kitsilano location has been around since the late 1980s, and...

We had a large group (18) at the last minute and they really took care of us. The food was delicious and authentic, the servers were especially caring and as a result we had a very memorable gathering. Would highly recommend.
This was our first time in several years and we brought out of town guests for a special occasion. Service was inconsistent, even to get water refills. 1 out of 5 dinners was served as the first 4 guests finished their meals. Not good timing. Perhaps just an off night but disappointing all the same when these are things you are hoping not to think about when you go out so you can concentrate on... more
A long time ago, I used to only go to Kalamata restaurant for Kleftiko. They still do an awesome Kleftiko. However, Maria's Taverna also does an awesome Kleftiko. In addition they have other menu items that Kalamata does not offer, such as the Tarama dip. We absolutely love Tarama and were so happy to discover that they not only do awesome Kleftiko, but they also do awesome Tarama. Very awesome... more
So happy that our excursions in Kits ended with an amazing meal at Maria's! My partner chose a family meal--about $19 Canadian gets you one of three apps, a few choices for the main course and either baklava or ice cream to finish. Her hummus was a little cloud of garlicky deliciousness, the pita large, warm and delectable. Her chicken... more
Wow,I thought we had the best Greek food out here in Surrey at New York,New York but no we do not.I had an opportunity to try Marias Taverna on 4th Avenue in Vancouver & we were so impressed by the food & the service.I had the beef souvlaki (very good) & my friend had the lamb roast, she said it was... more
This was by far the worst dining experience I've ever had in my life. The food was ok but the service was horrible. The worst part of our dining experience was when we asked for a manager at the end of our meal. Apparently there was no manager on site and when our waitress found out we wanted to talk to a manager she came fuming down to our table and started getting mad at the fact that we... more

With its authentic Greek cuisine and warm hospitality, the family-run Maria’s has maintained a loyal following in the Kitsilano neighborhood for several years. The blue and white décor is classic Augean, the atmosphere cozy and inviting. Start with an appetizer of zesty hummus and pita or a plate of lightly battered calamari. Greek salad, roast potatoes and rice accompany all main dishes. Try... more

Hummus, lamb shoulder, moussaka and chicken souvlaki are all favourites in this cozy, family-owned restaurant, warmly decorated in blue and white. $. L (M-Sa), D (daily).
