Built in 1688 by a French soldier, l'Auberge Saint-Gabriel was the first inn in North America. The architecture has been preserved to create at unique fine dining experience with chef, Eric Gonzalez
Excellent restaurant! from the food to service and from the service to the overall atmosphere all fantastic. you should try!
This restaurant is a must when visiting Montreal. My friends and I had a great meal. The atmosphere was perfect as well.
On our yearly trip to Montreal, we look forward to our annual dinner here. We have always had a creative meal orchestrated by the chef and his helpers in the kitchen. The wait staff are always very helpful with questions about the menu. This year was different, though the wait staff was as helpful as always, we were let down by the kitchen. The chef's that we had experienced in the past were... plus
Excellent eveing with great food and serice. Although I have been there before, and found this restaurant very good, they really have kicked it up a notch.
Beautifully prepared and presented meal. Classic atmosphere, both in the dining room and outdoor courtyard.
We went on recommendation of a local friend. Venue was upscale and lively. Food was at a high level in terms of both presentation and taste.
Have gone here several times and it was always great but this time. The food was just OK and the service was slow even though we told them we were going to a show.
Our meal started with mini fish coquette that we were not expecting, I you don't like fish it could have been a turn off. The mushroom tart and the pear, parsnip and caramelized onion veloute were excellent. Our chateaubriand was perfectly cooked at medium-rare. We didn't realize that the chateaubriand had two courses. Unfortunately, they came one on top of the other, so we didn't have time to... plus
The most outstanding feature here is the historical setting and building. The service was excellent and the food authentic & filling. A great experience overall
Was in Montreal on a business trip and we had three different people recommend this place for dinner. Went with my team and everyone loved it. Very cool decor, would be especially cozy and romantic in colder weather. Service was excellent...they were very accommodating of our limited timeframe (had a show to catch). The food didn't blow me away but I would still go back. I did hear that the... plus
Recently attended a catered event at the Auberge Saint-Gabriel as part of a professional conference. What a pleasant evening! The Auberge is a wonderful, historical landmark in Old Montreal. The service was excellent and the food amazing. Looking forward to returning there for dinner on my next visit to Montreal.
This was our second dining experience at this restaurant. The menu recently changed because spring has arrived so we could not order the same thing that we ate over the winter. Our food was fresh and delicious as usual. The service is impeccable, the sommelier is excellent, and the ambiance is as if you are in another time. We have recommended this restauarant to family and friends and we will... plus
The experience as a whole was really nice. It was a memorable night, for sure.
First of all, the service was great. The wine connoisseur seemed to be quite knowledgeable and helped us choose a really nice red Canadian wine.
The food was great and really interesting. The renowned chef had great ideas and the dishes brought out to us...

We tried this restaurant because it was a pleasant walk from our hotel. The food was delicious. Wonderful combinations of things to make wonderful dishes. Our waiter, I think his name was Jann but not sure, was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Mains are in the $40 plus range, but such care and time to prepare them was evident in the... plus
We were a party of 4 and had reserved for 7:00 Pm. Tables are spacious and staff are attentive. We tried the discovery menu 8 services with the wine pairing ( 7 wines). Now mind you that this is a dinning experience and if you choose this menu, it will set your pocket book back a few bucks (160$ per... plus
The food is mediocre. The portions are ridiculously small. The prices are ridiculously high. Don't waste your time and money. There are so many better restaurants in Montreal.
It is said that this location has been in continuous operation since at least the mid-1700's and has the first liquor license issued in North America. The restaurant is much larger inside than it appeared from outside, and there are interesting craft pieces on the walls. The food was quite good, although we felt overly-expensive.
Went there for a company holiday dinner.
Service was great, staff was very friendly, the decor is inviting and comfortable. That was very good.
Then dinner started... vinegrette on the salad was fatty and oily with barely any vinegar, bland.
Main course was described as a nice slow braised beef with pasta. Turned out it was basically a bite or two of bland braised beef on top of what could...

Weekend getaway to old Montreal. Had a fantastic tasking menu dinner will equal level of service. Very nice setting. Will go back next time in montreal!
Second visit, overall not as impressive as the first. All courses had above average presentation but overall food quality was just average. Interior fireplaces and very nicely done. Preferred a summer visit where we had dinner on the patio.
Have shared before, ate here first in 1974, have returned four times in the past two years. The chef us superb, the wait staff so friendly and efficient. Wonderful meals of seafood and lamb. Great memories, still being made!
I'll preface this review by stating I don't consider myself a foodie.
My wife took me here for my birthday and at first I was a bit skeptical as I never really bought into this tiny portion, all presentation over-priced "haute cuisine" french bistro scene.
All I can say is that I was shockingly surprised once the food started arriving!!...

Food was ordinary. Pasta with salted tomatoes and barely a hint of pesto . Cod with foam and a beet salad with elusive beets .. Ambiance terrific but food doesn't live up to reputation.
This delightfully tucked in place in the heart of old Montreal serves up a spectacular chateaubriand with many hidden treats in between. The server continuously brought us little plates in between each course to challenge the palate. Especially loved the dessert a handmade chocolate bar which topped a brandy Glass however inside the glass was a decadent chocolate sauce... Just... plus
We started with a small salmon appetizer fron the chef. I has chateaubriand which came with a rich and delicious soup as an appetizer. My meat was more medium than medium rare but had large slabs of country bacon wrapped around it, delicious. My Husband had the roasted chicken with the leg stuffed with foie gras which was perfection on... plus
Staff was helpful and offered great suggestions for dinner. We enjoyed a great bottle of wine, and shared the primerib for two, it was perfectly cooked, side dishes we very good. Save room for dessert, it's an amazing experience!
Me and my husband went there to celebrate our wedding anniversary a few weeks ago.
The day before we looked on the internet to find a gastornomical restaurant where we could enjoy the evening while eating a really delicious dinner.
The Auberge Saint-Gabriel is located in near the old port, and was really easy to find.
Upon our arrival a...

My daughter and I luckily came upon this place by chance last Oct (2012). We chose the 10 course option and were blown away by the presentation, taste and excellent service. I still remember most of the courses, but the most important and lasting memory I had was the brilliant use of simple ingredients to create courses that produced different... plus
If you wish to have a Victorian Gothic or Medieval Gothic high class wedding, this is the place to be, The decor with stone walls and personalized lighting, unique architecture, decor and exquisite food makes this place bring magic to any special event.
The service and attention are excellent and the quality top notch, simply put, part of my list of best experiences.

Did not ask how we liked food to be prepared. Small portions. Lamb not prepared well. Beef fillet was good.
My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant by accident as we wandered in Old Montreal. It has a lovely courtyard, and the evening was perfect so how could we refuse. This restaurant is for people who love and appreciate inspired food, done impeccably. Everything from the cocktails to each course is a wonder: Tomatoes du Quebec was the freshest,... plus
Food at Auberge St-Gabriel is very good. Possibly one of the best you can get in Montreal. A trendy place as well, in March, a table full of girls working at UFC was behind us.
Sommeliers seem very passionate about their work and describe well the different wines. Knowing the prices they sell at the SAQ, it’s probably one of...

Wow! The food, service and atmosphere was excellent! Each dish was prepared and served in five star style but the waiter was very friendly and attentive...not "stuck up". It was worth the extra time and amount but well worth it.
Yesterday for my birthday, my friend Maryse offered me the most delightfull present that you can ever dream of... an evening at l'Auberge St-Gabriel. At every service, it was like a magical waterfall of flavors. It was simply like a wave of gastronomic experiences! A sublime ascent to the Haven of every foody in us! I highly recommend it for... plus
- excellent service - good but not overwhelming food. a bit over-priced. waiter was very good - helpful - timely service -
Loved the subtle complimentary dishes between courses. The waitresses knowledge of our dishes was much appreciated, giving information about ingredients and wine pairing. Started with breadsticks baked with finely chopped meat in nickel sized pockets served immediately with our water. Next was a butcher block of assorted breads. Appetizers to follow included Foie gras interestingly paired with... plus
My wife and I arrived late to Montreal due to a flight delay, and we asked the Marriott staff for a recommendation. They suggested L'Auberge, which is connected to the hotel, and both are located in the heart of Old Montreal. The restaurant is in a historic structure and offers insides and outside (covered and not) seating. The staff is... plus
Went there for a dinner reception. The setting is great, an old Montrealais building; good food (though not trendy or sophisticaec) and attentive service. The cracking sounds from its old wooden floor were amazing.
No visit to Old Montreal would be complete without dinner at the oldest Inn in North America - St. Gabriel's! It opens promply at 6 pm and offers dining on its outdoor patio but we recommend eating inside as you can experience history from where you sit. A huge fireplace, stone walls, create an ambiance that takes you back in... plus
Superb décor in historical setting. All food entrees were like right out of a magazine, very stylish as well as tasty. Very friendly staff.
Is it me or is this place gone downhill recently? The amuse bouche was terrible, the salad was overly salty to the point we had to send back and service was incredibly slow. The meal was overpriced and the experience was unpleasant. Still love the bar and how nice Julie is but the restaurant is likely off the list
Knowing most of the great restaurants in Montreal, this is a very good restaurant for a tourist who wants to experience old world charm of Old Montreal and good food. During the day, I find the decor not as effective as the evening. Brick walls were throughout and the decor was interesting and rather eclectic. Food was very good however... plus
Wonderful Old Montreal restaurant experience. Good food, a little pricey, good service. Old world charming building and decor. Worth a visit.
Never coming back here, the food was overpriced for what it was. Ordered the chateubriand piece of meat and was given an overcooked, not fresh piece of filet mignon. When returned, I was argued by the manager that the chef said that the piece of meat was fresh...yet we were 5 people that compared our pieces with one another and mine waa definitely disgusting. The waitress twice filled our... plus

When recently in Montreal, this restaurant was recommended to be by the staff at the hotel I was staying. The atmosphere was upbeat and modern but still had that old Montreal feel.

The food was outstanding. Flavorful steak that was tender and cooked rare. Scallops not over cooked and very fresh. Warm enviroment with a few humorus touches. I'm not sure what the cost was as I attended as a guest.
Reborn. Went there in mid-winter expecting same old drab surroundings but was pleasantly surprised to learn that it has been reinvigorated. And teeming with customers.
Cool, almost cold, food, staff that could hardly explain the menu, generous portions and a warm decor..we were 4 and tasted the Carpaccio, the scallops, the greens and the salmon as an apetizer... We had the Chateaubriand as a main meal...the surprise "cuisine molleculaire " discontructed potatoes / meat plate, then the Chateaubriand ( they make a difference on the... plus
Reputedly the oldest inn in North America, L'Auberge Saint-Gabriel is tucked up a side street at the old port in Montreal, all thick stone and wood. It may have been the best dining experience I've had; it was certainly the priciest. Yet with two amuse-bouche (bread-entwined summer sausage; red beet and goat cheese salad) and two sweet treats (dessert of... plus
Really great quality food in a great atmosphere. Good choice of wines, varied menu. Go hungry so you can enjoy the desserts also.
Was here on a business trip. Had a GREAT dinner here with a colleague. They provided a great appetizer and dessert from the chef. It was great. The restaurant had excellent food and comfortable atmosphere . The decorations for Christmas were understated and very attractive. The food was creative cooked and presented , the service excellent . It was not cheap , but worth the price for a special meal----- we went for the Christmas evening meal .
This old auberge had the warmth of an old cottage coupled with quirky decor and creative menu items, both in flavour and presentation. An amuse bouche was generously provided before each course. The food and service were very good. A little on the pricey side so I would reserve this resto for a special occasion. The music was a little... plus
The food was good, however when you consider the price, I would recommend better restaurants like Europea, the Beaver club and Delmo.
I have been there 4-5 times. Food is great. Atmosphere is perfet. Wine selection - superb
I recommend it for business as well as romantic dinners
We chose this restaurant for a friend's birthday after rave recommendations from others. We weren't disappointed. Service was attentive and pleasant with lots of unexpected touches such as several different amuse bouches along the way. We had a leisurely meal and never felt rushed. Plates were exquisitely presented and focused on taste over quantity. While the restaurant filled up after... plus
We dined for lunch which was incredible!! The restaurants there have a menu that offers two or three choices from appetizers/entrees/desserts. You pick two for one price and three for another. After a few setbacks, my friends and I finally managed to dine at Auberge Le Vieux St. Gabriel. We were celebrating a belated birthday for my friend. We all enjoyed our meal choices. This is by far the best restaurant in montreal, you have to try it! We went for the supper on december 25th and it was so good! the service was excellent too.
A knock out interior, good service, over the top food with beautiful presentation in a great walking neighborhood in the Old Montreal area. We loved it.
Amazing food, impeccable service. It's a large restaurant, but with smaller rooms and timbered ceilings, it feels very elegant and intimate. The beef tartar and suckling pig were unbelievable, as was the Chateaubriand. Everything was a work of art. Be forewarned, the wine list is very ambitious. Bottles started at $50 and went up from there. But if i find... plus
Located in one of the oldest houses of Old Montreal, Auberge Saint-Gabriel's restaurant has managed to keep its old charm, with a modern industrial twist.

Foodie heaven. Excellent food, great portions, amazing atmosphere of stone history meets contemporary art. Presentation was spectacular and well worth the price. I went with a friend, but it would be a perfect romantic date or special occasion splurge. Highly recommended.
Amazing experience we had @ Auberge Saint-Gabriel. Try the charcuterie platter at Sheree's bar, oldest Auberge in Montréal, amazing decor, sexy cuisine! You should come!
Auberge Saint-Gabriel has been evolving in the last couple of years. From very traditional and overdone, it has become, under chef Eric Gonzalez' inspiration, one of my favorites in Montreal. Generous, inventive, fresh and always delicious, often copious ! The service is a just equation of knowledge, class and conviviality, always respecting the customer's budget when it comes to wine selection.
Art meets foodies ! I had quite a unique experience in a one of a kind decor. It is a well kept secret in the Old Montreal that is recognized for the creations of the very talented Chef Eric Gonzalez. If you live in Montreal or you are visiting from out of town, you have to try this restaurant.
