Pretty good service and atmosphere, but the food is honestly not that great and certainly overpriced. My deluxe unagi wasn't bad but wasn't worth $20 either.
The food was average for Vancouver sushi. Prices were on the medium to higher side. The restaurant service was good.
The service in the Karaoke bar, however, was terrible. Within minutes of sitting down, we were told that there would be a minimum charge of $5 per person. We said no problem, as we were planning to drink. About half of us ordered drinks or snacks. Most of us just ate at the...

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The staff at the karaoke side kept hassling us to buy a drink when we stated we would once we looked at the menu. They kept demanding and pointing to the menu stating 10$ minimum and 5$ minimum for the restaurant . We were trying to hangout and drink and it became very uncomfortable. I will never come back. They constantly hounded everyone in out... more
Their tuna tataki with garlic and pepper is divine.
Some sushi are overpriced for the quality, yakisoba wasn't greatest.
Hot sake was average.
I had always wanted to try this place out so when a friend suggested it as a meeting point I was more than happy to check it out.
The decor is very traditional Japanese, with Baseball game playing on TV to ensure that you feel like you have just landed in Tokyo.
The waitresses are sporting Kimonos and all staff were really friendly.
We ordered a bottle of the Premium Sake which came to the...

It's first week of Dec 2015, I just heard this place is moving. I plan to check out the new digs next time I visit BC. Please don't go too far and keep making awesome food at fair prices.
Good luck Kamei Royale on your new endeavour!

Wonderful time last night with friends. Jack did a great job at the sushi bar. Tempura (salmon, oyster, prawn) was delicious as was cooked meat salad, sushi and sashimi. Service was excellent.
Service was bad. Because no enough waiter and waitess. Price is reasonable. Food only ok! But Beef Udon' beef very tough!
Wow was here a year ago and it rocked , the service today was so bad I'm thinking WTF over
Sushi chief was great !! 100% ,
Food was OK but this place has got up its own back side and just rude , manager didn't give a F so that's why I doing this review . 20 mins for a hand roll ! And on a Thursday night at 8.30pm and the place is half full on seats and the sushi bar has 7 seats with 3 people...

I have been here for many years since I was a child and the food is amazing as always!
I usually bring my family with me since the portions are quite large for one person.
Things I commonly order are:
-Nabeyaki Udon
-Seafood Salad
-Crunch Munch Roll
-Ultimate Unagi
-California Roll
All of these things are sooo delicious and a little on the cheaper side as well.
Service is very friendly and...

This place hasn't changed much over the last few years. I'm almost hoping for some new choices, some innovation! It's a Japanese fusion-ish restaurant with some interesting sharing plates. The only changes they've done is omitting some dishes. I remember a really great fried fish platter that seems to be missing today.
Dinner today:
- Panko Oysters - Small, so very small. Note to self: do not...

One of the best places to go for Japanese food in downtown Vancouver. Expect to pay a bit more than your usual Japanese restaurants around, but when you look at the quality of the food it is far better. I do love coming here for lunch because their lunch boats are awesome! I haven't come here for dinner in a long time but I'm sure the quality and service are very good.
An all time favourite of mine.
I usually go there with friends or family since this restaurant offers great food, great service (most of the time), and great environment. It's usually relatively quiet during dinner times but during lunch times on weekdays it could get quite busy. Line ups form fast here so reservation is recommended.
Personally, I enjoy their yuzu mojito and their sashimi...

Tasty dishes and nice ambiance. Kumamoto oysters and Mao roll. Great miso soup. I'll definitely be back.
This is the place we picked to have dinner the first night in Vancouver and it wasn't good. They had the basics. I feel like since the menu gives you a lot of options, you don't know what to get. When given the food the presentation is c@!%!y. My mom got the Cherry Blossom Sushi roll and a piece of Saran Wrap was on the bottom of her sushi. The service was okay but other than that the food was... more
HAVE AGAIN: unagi sushi and various sushi rolls are very good. But the best part are the "low tables" with space under the tables for feet and grandchildren, who have much fun playing without disturbing other patrons.Friendly and accommodating staff.
This was very disappointing. The restaurant is pretty to look at but the food quality is subpar and over priced. I had the vegetarian boat and the the rolls were sloppily made and the agedashi tofu was mushy and cold. My husbands meal which was the bbq eel boat was equally sad. There are hundreds of better options for Japanese food in Vancouver I would choose one of those.
There's nothing special about the food at this Japanese restaurant--I've been going here for years and never thought to leave a review until I had lunch there this afternoon.
As you might imagine, lunchtime anywhere in the Downtown Core will be a hectic, chaotic situation of rush, rush, rush! One wouldn't expect anything more than minimum service by the bustling staff at any place offering...

Celebs and business people come here to imbibe. There are lots of shaded booths and nice parts of the restaurant to go to meet general business clients. The sushi is also finer than most downtown without being too boutiquey. There's a view of the street from atop the restaurant and the service is exceptional.
The food was good but they ruined it when they charged me $15 for a veg fried rice which was only rice and no veggies and on asking too I was getting a stupid answer the sushi and tuna were cheaper !
I know a lot of people around me like this place. My personal experience is "totally over rated and over priced".
The food was decent, but the service was terrible. For a city full of great sushi and Japanese restaurants, give this one a pass. We were a large party (of 17) which I can understand can be difficult for any restaurant, but Kamei Royale has enough large rooms that you'd think they had lots of experiences with groups. Not the case. Service was incredibly slow. We would ask for something and it... more
The vegetarian options have been significantly reduced and the prices have been hiked up. My average tasting avocado roll was $6 and they charged a $1 add on for hot sauce. They also asked if I wanted tea without telling me that they charged for it, something most japanese restaurants give away for free. All in all, its average, overpriced and I won't be back.
Cute restaurant right on Burrard Street easy to walk to from hotels. Cute location and setting. Loved the decor and layout. Very cozy feeling. Staff was very friendly and knowledgable. Food was fresh and delicious. A must for sushi if in Vancouver.
Well established traditional Japanese restaurant in the heart of downtown Vancouver on Burrard St. and Georgia St. It's on the 2nd floor of a mall-type building and you'll find the traditional restaurant adornments throughout. About half of their seating is in semi-private enclosed 4-top tables on the outer edge of the restaurant separated by light curtains and partitions built in. It's a nice... more
I ordered a sukiyaki pot last night for dinner, it was soooo salty that i had to ask for a glass of water and poured it into the hot pot. It only came with some vegetables and 6 slices of beef. $27 was too expensive for the taste and portion. The deco was out dated, looks like an old western pub lounge. The service was great and the staff was friendly. The food quality and price don't match... more
Delicious and affordable for lunch. They take lunchtime reservations and are usually quite fast although tracking down a server for something additional is a pain.
I wouldn't go here for dinner as it's quite pricey and there's better cheaper places for the same taste.
Not a high end or proper sushi house. It definitely feels the part with the interior design of the place. Don't get me wrong the sushi is great, it's fun, tasty. It's in a category of it's own and i'd definitely recommend it. I've had stuff here that i've never had anywhere else and would come back in a second. If I want high end high dollar sushi there's other places i'd go.
When you are looking or a quick meal in downtown Vancity, this is a sure bet.
Kamei royale has been around for years. It doesn't seem like much changes. They have fresh sushi and the prices are reasonable.
Went for lunch. maki boat ($12) was best to be shared given the portion size. The Cherry Blossom roll (~$10) was a nice concoction, a smaller portion compared to the previous. The green tea...

I love that the brown rice here is purple! That being said, the restaurant layout is a bit odd, the restrooms were difficult to find, and it is usually very busy here. The price is a bit high for sushi in this area, so I like this for corporate events more than personal adventures.
I use to come here all the time when I was younger. But since I've moved back to Vancouver from Japan, Kami was not as good as I remembered.
I've been here for a few times, and I thought I could finally review it. First off, I would like to say that I really like the interior design. The place always seems busy and the service is good. The food is delicious and I almost always order the tuna tataki when I'm here. However, this one time, I ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl, and to my disappointment, the chicken was quite hard.. I like the ambiance of this place. Dark furniture in dimly lit space. I like how the menu has not only pictures but English and Japanese descriptions. It reminds me of some restaurants I've been to in Japan.
Don't get the salmon and cheese dumpling appetizers. Orang cheese in a Japanese dumpling is wrong in every way. The sushi and sashimi is good.
They flame your creme brûlée table side!...

The one star is for the quality of seafood only. The service was a zero. Several initial choices of Japanese food places were too busy and we were hungry so since this is close to our hotel, thought may as well give it a try. We r from California, so this experience really placed a big doubt on Japanese cuisine in Vancouver forever! We sat at a sushi bar as it was "too busy" even though there... more
Good sake list. Sushi is OK. close to the convention center so you get a ton of biz people...which is OK because I went to vancouver on business. Large selection and good ambiance (not too loud, but lively, has private rooms everywhere). Service was good - no complaints.
This place is a little difficult to find - it's upstairs above tiffany's.
Very fancy store at very high end street, but very cheap and not fresh materials. Feel like cheap store stuff.
I've never complained about Kamei but it's also nothing to write home about. Ever.
Kamei has been around forever and serves your standard Japanese fare for non-exorbitant prices with perhaps above average customer service (but really, only because customer service at many places are terrible). Nothing is wrong with it - wouldn't tell you not to go, and I'm never very opposed to going, but know...

Decided to try this place after a local recommended it...great choice indeed!
Excellent sushi - interesting rolls and sake!
Very nice service - definitely will be back!
If you like Japanese food, this is a good place to eat for lunch, but don`t be late because the kitchen closes earlier than you think.
This is a huge restaurant, right next to the financial district and quite busy during lunch. The atmosphere is surprisingly good considering the size, the space is highly segregated, with multiple bars and a ton of dividers. The menu itself feels a bit tired, their offerings are fairly standard, with a lot of lunch boxes and boats. I was happy to see that they offer a black rice, and I a... more
What's with the televisions everywhere!? Sushi was OK but overpriced for the standard.
I've always wanted to try this restaurant and finally had the opportunity this past weekend. It is very centrally located downtown, on the upstairs right above Tiffany's on Alberni and Burrard. As soon as I opened the menu, I could tell that this was going to be a very pricey meal. But when the food arrived, it was outstanding in it's presentation and taste. The food came a little bit on the... more
If you go here you must try their spicy tuna roll - most amazing spicy sesame sauce ever, I crave this on a regular basis, my friend and I make it a point to come here at least once a month to have it. Very creative and delicious rolls, they offer whole grain rice too which is great. Kind of lame that they recently started charging for the cups of tea that before they served complimentary to... more
2.5 to 3 stars
I haven't bothered to review this restaurant before but I have insomnia so I figure some late night writing may help me sleep. Kamei is a larger establishment with semi-private Japanese screen rooms which remind me of the early 90s. I imagine a good portion of their business comes from tour buses since i saw a group come in awhile ago and figured that's how a mediocre restaurant...

I've been a long time customer of this place, and through renovations and staff turnover, the professional feel hasn't changed. Staff are always upbeat and polite.
Food has always been good, but some might question the cost of certain dishes for what you get either in quality or quantity. I would agree that the price is a little high for what you get if you've been spoiled with Octopus Garden...

THIEVES! Sushi was amazing, I was so happy to find a great brown rice sushi place. Unfortunately the service was terrible!! My girlfriend did not tip and I only tipped 10%. After I go to the front to pay then... more
Had lunch here with a friend. The food wasn't great (didn't justify its price) but the atmosphere was great and it was a comfortable spot for lunch. My friend insists this place is better for dinner so I'll probably be back at night to check it out.
First, I had reserved a table for 5 under my own name. The fifth member was a bit late, and asked at reception for my table. They couldn't find either the table or the reservation. He waited in the lobby for an hour. He was not in any way attended to. This is astonishingly poor hospitality.
Second, the food was markedly inferior to the very pleasant Kamei Royale on Broadway. Above all, the...
