Feel like a million bucks and treat yourself to a fine Italian pizza at Il Gallo Nero before you walk over to The Elbow River Casino. The atmosphere and decor are chic Italian and the friendly and attentive wait staff make your pizza even tastier! Love it!
Stopped by with a large group (8) before a concert at the Saddledome. We had reservations. After a bit of a glitch, 2 of us parked at the restaurant and only 1 vehicle per table, assume just in advance of Saddledome events, so I had to move my vehicle. Not sure it is fair for a table of 2 to... more
My son and I went into this restaurant on our way to the Casino. We were not familiar with it, but being in the area, decided to give it a shot. We were not disapointed. The food, the service, the decor and the price were all excellent. The menu offerred a number of choices that tempted us and the special sounded delicious too. This is definitely a place I will eat at again and again.
Great smaller place, close to the Saddledome. We stopped here for a quick drink before an event. Even though the place was packed the staff were wonderfully accommodating and wanted to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. We sat at the bar and it was very fun. I'll be back
Good pasta and veal selection. Daily features are always good. Never a bad meal in many visits. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.
My husband had been here for lunch with a colleague and suggested we go for our anniversary. When we lived in Ontario we were spoiled with Italian restaurants with homemade pasta and thankfully have found one here. We started with the calamari - fresh calamari with a crispy breading, nice. Next was a beet salad. One day we are going to remember to tell them to skip the salt - otherwise it was... more
Food was very good, priced almost a bit high for location compared to other very good Italian restaurants in the main core but the service was odd. Have been there a couple of times and last time experienced confusion as to who is serving who, wait staff who have forgotten they were to bring something, and the owner who comes... more
Gallo Nero is what I would call a comfortable favorite. The food is consistently excellent, the service is terrific, but also wrm and friendly.
The restaurant serves Italian/Mediterranean cuisine. Many, many people tell me that the Lasagna is the best thy have ever tasted, anywhere, including Italy. For years the owner, Claudio, resisted putting Calamari on the menu, but they...

Mediocre food and inattentive wait staff... sadly that's all I took away from the meal.
I loved the caesar salad! The dressing was great! My husband's seafood lasagna was good. I enjoyed my pizza! The tiramasu was good! A great place to go before a game with friends!
My first time to this restaurant despite driving by all the time on my way to flames games. It has a great atmosphere, and the service was good. But I must say very intrusive. They were so many waiters, and bus boys running around that it was irritating. All were very nice, but were just around too much! I had... more
We chose the restaurant based on its location: perfect if you want to have a meal before heading to an event at the Saddledome or Stampede Grounds. You can leave your car in their free parking lot.
Liked the atmosphere very much, modern and charming at the same time. The food was good, kids and adults found appealing choices on...

The quality of the food says it all for me. Co-owner Claudio has created a modern cosmopolitan restaurant and bar with a simple but fantastic italian theme to the cuisine. Pasta is the best I've eaten in Canada, and rivals that of northern Italy. Service is warm, cordial and professional. Near the Saddledome, this place is a must for an... more
LOVE IT everytime I go. I started going to da Palos when I was a kid. Claudio and the rest of the amazing staff have been like a second family to me and family. the butternut squash ravioli at Il Gallo is the MOST delicious thing I have ever tasted in my life, which is part of the reason I frequent Il Gallo (along with the service and atmosphere). My husband orders the succulent rack of lamb... more
We came with a party of five and we felt the dishes where overpriced for the quality. When we voiced our concerns with the food the waiter shrugged his shoulders and appologized. Very dissapointed!!
I have been to Il Gallo Nero twice. The first time I went with a bunch of girlfriends and it was very pleasant. It was a later visit on a week night, the restaurant was almost empty, and I had the seafood lasagne. It was very tasty, so I did not hesitate to book a reservation for a me and my husband for an anniversary dinner. I had told him how delicious the food is. He started with the... more
This restaurant is the perfect blend of homestyle Italian cooking with a friendly anatmosphere. Originally, Il Gallo Nero's owner Claudio owned the successful and well-riputed Da Paolo's on 17th before selling it and opening this place. Claudio knows how to blend an atmosphere in which the service is attentive but not invasive, the food is decently priced and a comfort to the stomach. This... more
Having been a patron to Claudio's various restaurants in Calgary over the years, I wish to commend the chefs and staff at Il Gallo on consistently providing excellent food and the staff for their attentive but never overbearing attention. We have brought friends, family and visiting business colleagues to enjoy their carefully prepared dishes and we wish them continued success.
Whether you live in the suburbs or right downtown, it's not difficult to find an excuse to try Il Gallo Nero. Although it's a very popular spot for a pre-hockey game meal, my finance and I often find ourselves eating there instead for a nice, romantic dinner. Claudio, the owner, is outstanding although the food clearly speaks for itself. The menu is more than appealing and moderately priced.... more
We went to Il Gallo Nero for a friends birthday on a weeknight and the service was TERRIBLE. Generally speaking, the server was not attentive or absent the majority of the evening, despite the restutant being mostly empty. The night started with not being offered a drink menu for 15 minutes. Then another 15 for a food menu. The food came in a reasonable amount of time, however the servers thumb... more
Went out for lunch with the work team on Thursday to bid farewell to Nick before he leaves to go back to school. Upon being seated, we were offered a very nice mineral water. After... more
I attended a lunch today hosting some media from Chile...there was about 15 of us in attendnace. Claudio, the owner of Gallo Nero, and his team did an amazing job. We started with some delicious calamari and then they presented several pasta dishes family style as well as a tremendous veal dish. Service was warm, attentive and surprisingly fluent --... more
After closing the chapter on the originl Da Paolo, Claudio reopened and rebranded as Il Gallo Nero one block east of his old 17th Ave home, and has created a wonderful new italian eatery. The interior is much more a male styled chop house, but don't be swayed as this is also a family inspired restaurant as well. Creativity in the menu selection could be considered a bit bland, however the... more
Very good Italian, and at a reasonable price. Good wine list with lots of old world. Can get very loud inside, to the point of having difficulty speaking with the person right next to you. It depends on the night, and where you're sitting.
This lively bar and grill near the Stampede Grounds serves classic Italian dishes with a contemporary flair. On the menu are items like braised short ribs with saffron risotto and gnocchi with truffles. Plus, a long list of homemade pastas that change weekly. Entrees: $$$
