Finally had the chance to try Horfrost for ourselves, as so often when we're in town they are not open as their hours are limited. As it was Easter Sunday, they were open, however it was very, very quiet, so our reservation was not warranted.
Started our meal with the husband ordering Oysters on the 1/2 shell. Menu said it...

On our month long drive across Canada, we decided to explore Portage La Prairie while driving through Manitoba and we were so glad that we stopped at Horfrost for lunch. The restaurant gets its name from the hoarfrost that occurs in the area during the winter months ( a somewhat local/natural event). The food used in the restaurant grows in... more
You must stop here and try this place. We ordered appetizers, main course, dessert, coffee and wine. Everything was above par and beyond. We loved the little details such as signature imprinted sugar rounds, real linen napkins. Lovely place to unwind, relax and enjoy quality food. They truly have something special here.
I've been to several high end restaurants in Winnipeg, and never have I encountered one outside of the city, until tonight. Horfrost could truly compete with any of those other restaurants, as everything was spot on. Super friendly and knowledge waitress, casual and cozy atmosphere, great drink selection, the food presentation was incredible, and the food taste was even better.... more
Food is tasty but portion sizes are small for the cost! Have left Hungary in the past. Good atmosphere and friendly service. Change of menu on a regular basis! Sometimes you may need a reservation.
I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the meal that I had at the Horfrost. You wouldn't know just how delicious of a restaurant it is from the outside, as it is in a strip mall. But step inside and be amazed at a beautifully presented meal. Very cool choices too for appetizers and entrees. The desserts were also very, very... more
I have eaten at Horfrost numerous times and have never been disapointed. The food is always great! Everything is made from scratch using as much local ingredients as possible. The homemade icecream is delicious.
We have driven from Brandon to Portage to go to Horfrost with friends for dinner - we find it worth the trip for an interesting seasonally varied menu that emphasizes fresh local ingredients. Last week I was there for lunch with business colleagues. The mushroom soup was delicious and unique, our sandwiches were equally tasty, the service was attentive and... more
Foie gras in Portage la Prairie next to an Esso station? Yes! This is perhaps the best restaurant in Manitoba outside of Winnipeg and would compete with the better restaurants in Winnipeg as well. The atmosphere and location are average - you probably wouldn't tell looking at the outside that this place had such high-end food. The service was friendly... more
I think that events like Christmas and summer holidays are made more enjoyable because of the anticipation surrounding the dates. I have waited over a year to visit Horfrost. Portage la Prairie is a mere hour west of Winnipeg and would be an easy drive for dinner. In fact, if we lived in any other major city in Canada ,... more
Unique and changing menu. At supper they always have a small free appetizer to try and it is always delicious.
This place was horrible will never return. Had a 70 dollar lunch with my friend and it was terrible.
This is probably the most upscale restaurant for portage.
Good place for a fine dine steak.
