Francophiles seek out Hervé Martin’s “cosy”, “very European” “hidden treasure tucked away” Downtown in a Robson Street courtyard for its “unpretentious”, “well-prepared” pricey French fare and service by “personable” “waiters who’ve been there forever”; regulars revel in the antique decorations and “old-world charm” with “no surprises”, finding it all “lovely and romantic.”

Hermitage is exactly what every city should be lucky enough to have: a romantic bistro-style hideaway that delivers consistently well-executed food, a friendly demeanour, and a comfortable atmosphere. Chef/proprietor Hervé Martin holds strongly to his French roots. Sweetbreads with honey ($27) are rich and satisfying. The West Coast bouillabaisse ($27) is dense with local fish and shellfish.... more

An excellent place for a very fancy meal. The staff were courteous and very helpful. Only thing I wish was improved from our meal was if the wait staff would've advised us that our appetizer and main were very similar (both were a sea food with pastry dish).  Other than that, I'd highly recommend you go here.  The food is so delicious, with just the right level of richness.

Unfortunately Hermitage will be closing at midnight on February 14, 2011 owing to issues with the landlord.   This is a wonderful restaurant, with terrific food, impeccable, professional service, and suffused with the warm personality of the proprietor.  The good new: M. Martin and his crew will soon be opening The French Table,  Main & 23rd.

Old traditional style French. Reasonable, but not great. Had the veal chop and it was overdone. They charged $5 for bread? What the heck.. r we in Europe?

My husband and I go to the Hermitage every time we are in Vancouver, we even got engaged there. We love the beautifully prepared food and attentive waitstaff. My husband always pre-orders the Steak Tartare and Pommes with homemade Mayonnaise, it is the best he has ever tasted. I love their charcuterie items the most. Our dining experience has always been top notch. I would highly recommend the... more

This little restaurant is Very well hidden in the back of a little plaza off Robson street, but we were greeted by a Very Friendly gentleman who took our jackets and even went as far as to gather the trailing edge of the tablecloth for us when we sat down.Their beer on draft was VERY NICE, and there was an extensive wine list too. I had chicken breast stuffed with chorizo and parmesan flakes... more

This place was probably the first French restaurant I've been to. I actually liked the decor of the place, it's very.. cozy? I don't know how to describe it. I guess it's dated in a good way.The waiters that work here.. well, they were nice. I'm just being mean here, but their voices were a little irritating, especially when they laughed really obnoxiously.I remember having the tomato soup... more

Horrible
February 20, 2010

Horrible, will never come back. I've never had such service at a fine dining place before. Everything was below average other than the decor which was cute.Service: "Hi" . "What would you like?" That summed the my service. There was no "how was the food", no "thank you" at bill, no small talk whatsoever. it was not a super busy night. It felt like I was dealing with robots who at the same time... more

Fantastic holiday dinner here, a really special evening. I was a bit nervous bringing our challenging toddler for a fine meal, but our waiters were exceptional and charmed our little guy with toys and special attention so we could enjoy a fabulous meal. A highlight from our holiday trip to Vancouver. As first-time visitors, we were treated like family. The restaurant was beautifully decorated for Christmas in Old World style, cozy and intimate. The menu was a perfect match for the decor: classic French cuisine, just like you wish your grand-mere used to make. Everything we ordered was just perfect, and it was great to get taken care of so well... more

If you have the good fortune of being in Vancouver, BC (Such a beautiful City) for business or pleasure - please do yourself, and anyone lucky enough to be with you, a favor and have dinner here. Can I just say the lamb, the lamb the lamb - I would almost consider moving to BC just to eat the lamb. A true understanding of food and how to treat each ingredient. The Hermitage has the most authentic French "feel" I have found in Vancouver.  The owner is front and center greeting patrons in true gallic fashion.  The food is superb, the wine list quite good, and the service is properly attentive without being intrusive.  I don't go here as often since I found Cordon Bleu five minutes from my house, but if I want french food downtown, this is where I go.

Don't be fooled by their advertisement for their prix fixe menu. As soon as you tell the server you want it, they will treat you as second-class diners the rest of the evening. Poor service. They charge for BREAD! I could think of twenty restaurants in Vancouver to dine at before ever recommending this place. Don't waste your time or your money. Reminded us of a wonderful bistro on a side street in Paris that was the highlight of our France tour. The indoor dining room makes you feel like your are in the owner's own house. We felt like we were family - the service was exceptional - and the food better. The waiter's wine suggestions were right on the mark. Well worth the time it takes to find it.

A very French bistro - inside is very traditional French, while outside on the patio, you get good French food, while people watching along Robson (shopping district). Fancy French foods, served by waiters in tuxedos. A must not miss dish - the Grand Marnier souffle - it'll take 20 min to prepare, but well worth the wait.

As French as the West Coast gets. In other words, the food is ok (but not really of French quality), and the waiters are actually friendly and responsive. Can't have it all now, can we?
