The restaurant offers a very comfortable, yet contemporary interior. The atmosphere as a whole does indeed satisfy the yearnings of a mind bent toward whimsical creativity.Become enchanted by the Handi dining experience... Succulent kababs, drenched in flavorful Indian spices... A rarified cuisine, coupled with a complementing beer and wine list, is what Handi offers
Worst ever. Got a groupon and got the nastiest korma ever. It was literally white. Nowhere does it say but I guess it's their secret 'policy' that you can't get anything to do with seafood. Odd, because they charge almost $30 for 'fish' literally unnamed fish. Double the cost of any nearby place. Then they auto gratuity a party of two. Happy to tip on the full amount guys.. I get a groupon, but... more
Not good. Naan is flat and small in comparison to traditional naan. Was not a matter of freshness; rather prep and recipe. The palak/saag (spinach) was gross; seriously, it left notes of rose water and aromatic Indian incense on the palette. Was also greasy... super.
Handi is hands down my favourite local Indian restaurant. The food is amazing and the owner is delightful. We actually had our wedding reception on the deck at the old location and we go back every year on our anniversary. I can't say enough great things about this restaurant. It's a bit of a hidden gem now that they've moved but I'm so glad they're not gone. I highly recommend heading to West... more
Food is great. We've been getting takeout here for the last few years we've been living on the north shore. We've dined in only a handful of times and the most recent time, I was really offended. This was probably 3 weeks ago. I am a Chinese female and was dining with my boyfriend who is a white male. I was not acknowledged when greeted. When asked if we would like anything to drink, he would... more
Handi in its old location was a dream restaurant with an awesome deck had many happy lunches and dinners. Food was always good but the layout was inviting and made one feel like you were in an old restaurant that had been there forever.
Jump forward to the new location and the smaller location is different and I miss the old charm from the original location. Food well that just got better and...

We used to order from this place. However this place has become horrible. After the last two times, we will never order from here again. The previous time we ordered tandori chicken and it came absolutely raw. It took one hour on the phone for a manager to offer us (at least) a refund. Today, we had guests who decided last minute to stay for dinner. We figured we'll take a risk and order again... more
Little gem I found one evening after shopping at Park Royal. I've came back a few time since the initial discovery. Prawn Goa Curry is one of my favorite. It's family owned, very friendly.
Maybe a bit closer to four and a half stars really, Handi has been in the West Van area for a bit shy of a decade now. Since moving from its much larger space on Marine Drive (remember that wonderful deck they had?) a couple of years ago, Handi has settled into its new home on Bellevue. Although much smaller, the new space is still inviting with a warm decor and friendly staff. The service is... more
I've been eating Indian cuisine for years and unfortunately Handi did not meet my expectations. The service was excellent, but when my partner had gotten up to change our order with the owner, he was given attitude that you wouldn't expect coming from someone who is running a restaurant.
The naan bread and rice was unfortunately overpriced for the amount we were give, but thankfully the...

Excellent. The lamb was probably the most tender I have had in some time. The sauce with the entree was a good flavor complement. Looking forward to experiencing it again.
This is the worst restaurant I have ever been. Online it states that they are open until 11 on Saturday. We reached there at 9.10 pm and the lady at desk asked us to leave by 9.30 pm. We were confused as for how will they even serve us that fast and we have to finish and leave. We we're a party of 5 and had to leave because of this.
Disappointing flavours, good enough service although they never checked to see if we were happy with the meal. The eggplant bhartha didn't taste of eggplant at all, just a tomato sauce. What really brings this place down is how dirty the bathrooms are...begs the question how clean is their kitchen? Hand sanitizer everywhere...good job really?
We were served Chicken Biriyani after we ordered Vegetable Biriyani. There was little/ no apology. The Vegetable Biriyani served a second time also had chicken bits in them. We are not going back here.
We went in with no expectations at all, and came out surprisingly satisfied. First of all, all of the individual entrees came in their own individually heated dish so they stayed fairly hot/warm throughout the meal. Second, the entrees were tasty. The butter chicken was creamy, sweet, and yummy. The chicken tikka was tangy, spicy, and provided a flavor explosion with every bite. The naan was... more
Terrible. Portions were shockingly small and of poor quality (ingredients, preparation). It's like they're hanging on to their glory days and just trying to get people through to the door to gouge them.
I love Indian food and will pretty much eat it anywhere but this place was hands down the best I've had. The only complaint I have is the lack of service. The server didn't check on me once the whole hour I was there. I wish I could of given the tip straight to the kitchen and none to him.
Great food! Great price! Friendly delivery driver! I order from here all the time. The spicy butter chicken is my favourite. Also, the veggie pakoras is delicious.
We went there this afternoon for their buffet and I found it to be reasonably priced at 13.50 including tax and very flavourful. I think it one of your more typical Indian Lunch buffets with limited options but at the same time the options were delicious. I will more than likely go there again pretty sure its only a weekend buffett
Great food, very friendly staff and incredible food at reasonable prices!
This was my first time there, and we had the following, which were all great!
* Vegetable Pakora
* Butter Chicken
* Vegetable Jalfraize
* Plain Naan
I will be coming back here often!
This is one of the best Indian Restaurants in North America. Great tasting, great ingredients, great quality, great presentation, great service, great ambience, great location. All in all a high, well deserved FIVE stars.
This place has gone down hill!!!! We just ordered take out. The bill came to 70$ for about 3 dishes and they forgot items in our order. The butter chicken was soup with no chicken and the chicken tikka was maybe 5 pieces of chicken both dishes cost around $15 each. I will never eat here again. The portions are unexceptionable and when we called about the missing items she was unable to help... more
Amazing meal... Our new favourite go to local Indian restaurant. Ordered Butter Chicken mild, Chicken Tikka Masalaa Medium, two Naan, rice, Mellon Splash, and Mango Swirl. Both drinks were not blended but complimented the meal with citrus and sweetness. The Masalaa had great texture with a great blend of herbs. The Butter Chicken has a thick cream that had a long lasting sweet flavour. This is... more
Wonderful!
I had been on a hunt for a few days for a traditional Indian restaurant to bring some work guests to as a "Farewell Dinner". While it was for dinner and getting dark when we got there, the location is right across from the water and is perfect to go for a walk along after a meal.
Handi was more than accommodating for our party of 27 in the middle of the week.
We has a mixed...

Despite having been customers of Handi for years, I have to go with a 2 star because of their lack of ability to solve problems. Over the last 2 years, we have had a couple issues with their take out and delivery services. First issue- a delivery order was received missing our lamb rogan josh. We had been charged for the dish and tipped on it being included PLUS a not-so-small delivery fee.... more
I have been at this restaurant a couple of times. The food is perfect. The staffs are caring. Sometimes the dishes are not clean. I still recommend my friends to come here and have food.
Best chicken tikka! I would recommend surely.
Friendly service and nice location.
Also had chicken tikka masala and lamb methi which were good too..
Best Indian food ever!
tried so many different ones on the lower mainland but this one is a winner!
Too bad they moved to their new location..the previous one had a very nice rooftop patio and great view.
New location... not so much!
Food is amazing!
So sad. When this place was on marine drive it was one of our favourite Indian restaurants in Vancouver. We went with a big party. First, they couldn't handle all the orders--got some wrong, some dishes took way longer than others. Second, the food has gone down hill. The curries are just not as tasty--don't know what happened. Third, the menu/restaurant blatantly lied in stating they serve... more
When they moved I think they forgot their chef. I went to new location and it was horrible. I ordered vegetable korma with medium spice. It was frozen peas, carrots and cauliflower mix in a very white bechemel sauce. There was no seasoning, no spice, and no flavour. And frozen vegetables??? For real??? Grosssssss!!!!!
I visit Handi weekly because I love their the butter chicken so much!
I have tried at least 10+ butter chickens from various restaurants and this is the best by far!
The garlic naan and calamari are also amazing!
Note that they have moved from their previous location next to the cop station.
When my wife likes Indian food the restaurant deserves five stars. She constantly complains that that Indian food is mush. The texture of Handi Cuisine was perfect. For myself the spice was right on.
Handi's is by far one of thee best Indian restaurants we've been to. The people are always really nice and they have always got our order right which as we all know these days it's about a 50/50 shot!
I normally order the Chicken Tikka Masala or Butter Chicken and holy smokes is it GOOD! So far I've only got dragon nose once because there was a little too much spice. I'm a real baby when it...

This place can't be beat for curry on the North Shore. I recommend: sleeve of Pale ale, calamari starters, butter chicken (medium-or hot if you like) with garlic nan bread or 2. No rice required unless you are really hungry. Our favorite restaurant in West Van! Service is a bit slow sometimes, but the curry is worth the wait.
Asked for HOT and we got HOT!!!!!
Butter chicken and lamb were great. Only criticism was that we ordered naan and got only two small pieces. At most other Indian restaurants we usually get twice as much and it was just average garlic naan.
Nice view of fishing piers from our table which was next to window in back.
We went there many times, got take out food. Our order has always been with some special requirements, which they catered for without any problem.
We love going to the upper section which has a wind protected, open section. On poor weather days, we sit next to the windows. The resaurant dining area has a lovely view of English bay...

My boyfriend suprised me by going to Indian for valentines dinner. Best Indian ever!! Food tasted fresh, super yummy! Good cocktails, good service, would highly recommend it!!!!
I always go for the buffet on the weekend and it is fantastic! Love this place so much. The butter chicken is good (especially when you dip the naan in it) and the dessert is also very very good. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone (who isn't on a diet) :P
Just when I think there's no other better decor than Salam Bombay in DT, now I ran into this one in west van! Sure doesn't hurt that in the back of the resto, you can get a partial water view of Lions Gate too.
Ever watching my diet, I decided to opt for a few appies, the chicken samosas & Fish Pakoras--yeah right, both deep fried lol. but seriously, i was getting tired of butter chicken!

Although the buffet food is good, this restaurant does not deserve your patronage because the host, who was never friendly to begin with, was rude and insulting to us on our last (and final) visit there.
Horrible experience. Brought my girlfriend here before we went to see the fireworks, and ended up missing the fireworks due to a rush emergency to the bathroom. The food was terrible, the server was old and going through the motions and the restaurant was dirty. Floor was dirty and windows had bird poo all over them. So when the outside... more
Mixed experience for me:
liked:
# friendly and helpful staff
# relaxed atmosphere
so-so:
# plates are ok if you're hungry
didn't like:
# dirty sidewalk in front of the restaurant
# worn down carpets, overall a bit shabby
# one menu card was not clean with sauce spilled inside
# too expensive for overall experience
I went here during the opening, food was great. Now the food tastes rushed and the sauces taste like they are from the packet. They also push alcohol on you and if you do not order, you will not see the waiter again.
Tea lights under each serving plate were incredibly effective in keeping the curries hot. The Shahi Paneer was amazing (if you like Paneer Tikka Masala, the Shahi is even better) as were the Dal Handi and the Vegetable Jalfrezi.
A beautiful restaurant, too! Most customers were sitting upstairs on the waterview rooftop deck, but we were more than happy downstairs in the inside dining room.

I love Indian food but was very disappointed by Handi- their butter chicken sauce was like canned tomato soup with cheap curry sauce added (Sorry Handi). The Handi Oloo... more
We have ordered this dish as takeout/delivery a couple of times from their Dunbar location. Cafe Mumbai was my Kits butter chicken go to for the longest time until it closed down a few months ago. I have found a worthy replacement in Handi on 4432 Dunbar.
Well priced, 15 minute service and tasty garlic naan.
Excellent Indian food, pleasant staff, good take-out (take it down to the beach), and a nice outdoor patio overlooking the ocean.
Handi is hands down our favorite Indian restaurant in the Vancouver area. Of course, the acclaimed Vij's is phenomenal and we enjoy that for a special treat.....but for a casual, value priced meal Handi can not be beat. And honestly, in my humble opinion, the authentic flavours here can hold their own, no frills required.
We have tried almost everything...

This is our regular "go-to" Indian restaurant. My husband craves their delicious butter chicken (it's not as sweet as other versions) and I love their prawn goa curry. The food here is delicious whether you are ordering a la carte or eating from the weekend buffet. There are plenty of vegetarian choices. The dishes are not overly spiced or hot. There are so many different typeso Indian cuisine but I consider these people to offer the McDs of Indian. Anyone can find something to eat here.
Friendly staff and nice decor. The dishes are a la cart and easy to share- the serving dishes are set on heaters so the meal stays warm. I haven't tried anything here that I didn't like. The butter chicken is heavenly and the naan is light and fluffy. One of my very favorite restaurants in Vancouver.
This place has the best indian food. Great atmosphere and great prices.
I really enjoyed their patio on a nice sunny evening. Nice and spacious with lots of shade if that's what you like. The servers were all very polite and helpful in describing the different dishes and the food was also very good. Love the little cone papad they give you before your food, they're perfect for dipping. The prices were average for an Indian restaurant, but combined with the groupon... more
Excellent service, warm inviting staff, savory menu.
I've never actually sat down inside this restaurant, but I get their food to go whenever I'm craving curry. The Ambleside location has a patio with a view that is probably nice in the summer. The awesome thing about Handi, is they actually know what hot is. I asked for hot, like "Indian hot", this one time, and I was actually sweating through my entire meal. If you like spicy food like I do,... more
one of my favorite restaurants! great food, so authentic and reasonable prices. portions are great for sharing, just watch out for the spice, I can only handle the mild!
The food here is good. We love the Dahl Handi. The ambience is standard, nothing special. The service is ok at the restaurant, but multiple times when we asked for our leftovers to be packed they didn't pack it all. Even the next time when I specifically requested that they pack everything, including the rice & bread, they left some out and only packed some of one of the leftover curry dishes. :(
BEST Indian food I've had in all of Vancouver (at the West Van Location). I eat out at least 3 times a week and have tried most restaurants in West Van and Downtown ... this one's a winner.
Can't beat the food, the service is friendly (not fine dining but it works), and the setting is beautiful.
Was brought here by my daughter and husband as it's their favorite indian in the area. we had vindaloo's and Tikka's which were all good, but a bit too mild (guess the locals don't really appreciate too much spice). The atmosphere was reasonable and the service reasonable.
Terrible service!! This is the one on Dunbar Street. I'm afraid they are busy only because there is nothing else in the neighbourhood. Excellent mango lasse, I'll say that much but the staff and owners didn't really seem to care about the customer too much. Please send your money at a restaurant with better customer service!
Visiting Ambleside and trying to find a restaurant when we came across Handi's. They have outdoor seating on the second floor with spectacular views of the water and ships passing by. Our 'to go' butter chicken and chicken tikka masala was dessert-like, to die for, unbelievable. Beautiful, tender chicken in the richest, most delicious sauces that you could eat as soup! The curries have an amazing smokey taste to them, too. Naan bread is so fresh and soft...melts in your mouth!
horrible service and mediocre food

Insulting treatment, poor customer service. Don't eat here!
