Do you ever have one of those weeks? A week that makes you want to just curl up into a fetal position for a while? What is your escape from such a week? Come Friday evening, some people may choose to drink – maybe a glass or two of scotch, some beer, perhaps. Not me. I go seek my comfort food at my usual spot: Chinese Roast Pork (sui yuk)...

What I love most about Vancouver is its Chinese food. This place was amazing. Feels authentic. I can't say for sure because i have never been to China. I had the peanut oil fried cod. Delicious.
My husband and I visited this place and it was great. There are lots of choices on the menu and they don't disappoint. I really enjoyed the hot tea and soup we were served.
Old Chinatown in Vancouver is undergoing a revival. Gain Wah Restaurant has been there for many years and still offers excellent authentic Chinese food at very reasonable prices. The décor is not fancy, but you will not be disappointed in the meal or in the friendly service! This is one of our favorite Vancouver restaurants. The congee, noodle soups and... more
Chinatown is undergoing considerable upheaval. On the one hand, ethnic Chinese are choosing to live in Richmond or Burnaby or on South Main, and are moving away from the traditional core area.
On the other hand, gentrification and Occidental inroads are encroaching from every quarter.
So I was a bit shocked to drive down Pender and Keefer Streets on a...

We ordered the curried vegetables with soft noodles, and the braised cod and tofu hot pot. The dishes came out within 10 minutes, and we liked them. The food we sampled was fairly simply prepared, but that was not a bad thing; we also found the dishes were good quality and not too salty or oily. I found some bits... more
Walking around Chinatown, we were looking for a place to eat. A local artist could tell we were looking around and asked if he could help. We told him we were in search of great Chinese Food. He told us that his favorite place was Gain Wah, located a block or two away. He said it had very plain décor,... more

Not the cleanest. I've been to other places that were a worse.
Occasional flies flying in front of me while eating or flies into my food.
Other beggers coming in as patrons bugging me for some money while I'm eating. Annoying... Chinatown....it is the broncs...

I have been eating here for about 20 years. I'm having trouble sharing because it's my secret and I don't want a line up to contend with. The building is overdue for condemnation or demolition but food is as good as it gets. Found this place because my tai chi club master told us all to eat there so we... more
My friend and I had reservations at a fancy restaurant downtown for our first and only night in Vancouver after a long trip to Vancouver Island. We decided to eschew the reservations and go for Chinese in Chinatown after seeing some great reviews for this place. We were not disappointed! The staff were very kind and amiable. My friend had... more
I read an online review of Gain Wah when searching for something to eat one night. So I walked the five blocks or so and found a fairly quiet little canteen style place, just off Main Street. Generous and very well priced portions, very tasty food. It's been there a long while and had a change of ownership, I believe,... more
Arriving in Vancouver that afternoon we heard that vancouver's chinatown is great so we walked over to chinatown at 5:00 thinking that we were going to arrive around six. We walked by multiple stores but then we stumbled upon Gain Wah Restaurant. Right away we were greeted by a cheerful employee. She seated us immediately in a round table in... more
If they didn't have beer, I'd never have spent more than $7 on my meal here.
Cheap and cheerful traditional Chinese comfort food is served up at Gain Wah Restaurant in Vancouver's Chinatown. There's nothing glamorous about this joint, just simple and wholesome food that will leave your belly full and your wallet light. The BBQ duck congee is will warm you up from the inside out, while the gai lan will nourish. This Chinese diner has been a mainstay in the neighborhood... more
