An historic film and play theatre in Downtown Toronto, Ontario. It was initially known as the Pantages Theatre, then became the Imperial Theatre and later the Canon Theatre, before it was renamed in honour of Ed Mirvish
The Ed Mirvish Theatre began its life in 1920 as a combination vaudeville and motion picture theatre in the Pantages theatre circuit. With its original 3373 seats, it was the largest cinema in Canada and, with its lavish interior - designed by the great theatre architect Thomas Lamb - the most elegant. David Mirvish officially renamed the iconic building The Ed Mirvish Theatre on December 6, 2011.
This beautiful venue has had a tumultuous history. It got its start as the Pantages Theatre in 1920, and its opulent design (by the famous theater architect Thomas Lamb) was widely admired. However, the theater's fortunes sank in 1929 -- not because of the stock-market crash, but because its owner was embroiled in a legal battle. Eventually, the gorgeous space was carved into six cinemas. It... more
The shows are awesome, but the person who approved selling popcorn in the theatre should be fired! You will be listening to people behind you loudly chewing popcorn during the show. When they are finished the people beside you will start. I don't appreciate paying $130 for that! It makes Toronto low class uncultured city. I was very disappointed with... more
The show's name said it all. And rocked we were. It helps if you're a Queen fan but this is the third time for me and they keep changing performers and keeping it fresh. The theatre is like one from the past. Gloriously decorated but with comfortable seating. I'd just like to know who's brilliant idea it was to give... more
The Ed Mirvish Theatre is a spectacular venue to enjoy a musical. The sound is terrific, there are great views from wherever you sit. As long as you attend a musical you like, it's difficult to imagine anyone not enjoying the venue itself. I think some of the poorer reviews of the Mirvish forgets to differentiate between the venue and... more
Have seen many shows at this Ed Mirvish Theatre. All are world class. We have a season subscription and the performances here rival those in New York, where we frequently travel for theatre. Soon, this theatre will be torn down for condo development, so visit it before teardown.
I expected this show to be a lot more "electric" and exciting but it failed to pull me into the storyline....which was too long and boring. The band was amazing and the male lead vocals were absolutely incredible. The lead female singer was quite "pitchy"....I expected a lot more for the $97 that I paid for my ticket. I would... more
Couples night out to see "We Will Rock You" - fabulous show: great talent, great music, great theatre.
I've come here many times with my husband and various other family members. The shows that are performed here are very professional and I've enjoyed it greatly. The prices vary depending on the show. I like to get front row balcony seats so I can get a birds eye view of the shows. I will be back but it's been... more
We enjoyed Heartbeat of Home on Valentine's Day at the historical and lavishly decorated Ed Mirvish Theatre. The artwork on walls and ceiling is a must see. It was an excellent breathtaking show. The dancers were so young, energetic and talented. We were blown away. Glad we bought tickets for the limited Toronto engagement but next time we'll spend more... more
we went to see HeartBeat of Home. The dancing was riveting and music superb. Hope it comes back so I can go again and take the rest of my family.
This is a spectacular musical filled with music, dance, humour, and overall fun. The group is a solid, flawless team of performers. I don't know where the two hours of the show went; this is how mesmerized I was. I highly recommend this show to anyone.
The theatre itself is beautiful, and kept in very good condition. Having been here a number of times to see shows, we're always impressed with this theatre, the sights, and the sounds. Excellent place to see a show.
We saw Heartbeat of Home here, and after seeing Riverdance 6 times over the years, were excited to see something new. This...

Amazing show! I always liked Irish dancing but this show will blow away your imagination! A world-class cast of 38 of the best Irish, Latin and Afro-Cuban dancers and musicians performing for two hours non stop. When you feel like only 15' and surprised it is over you know how great this show is. Toronto is just the first stop... more
Neither me nor my friend had ever seen Riverdance, so this was a first of this type of dance - worth the time and effort for sure. The Irish Dancers are fantastic - juxtaposed to the Flamenco dancers and the Inner City ones - so well choreographed. When you go, keep an eye on the female of trio of InnerCity... more
WOW!!!!!! what an amazing performance!!!!!!!! beginning to end kept us mesmerized. The music, the dancers, the stories were beyond captivating.
Just come back from the theater. What a wonderful experience, despite the miserable, cold weather the show was nothing less than awesome. Great music, great dancing, wonderful cast.
Sexy, electrifying. If you have seen Riverdance and you like it than this show you will LOVE.
I definitely would recommend it - it is must see if you are in Toronto,...

Captivating performance with energetic dancers and excellent musicians. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
My wife and I attended this show on jan 22nd 2014. I highly recommend viewers to see it. The dancing and music was excellent
This was my second visit to this theatre. Good location in the downtown area. Aladdin was an excellent production with excellent cast. The Genie really made the show awesome.
The theatre itself is a nice venue, lots of character. Flow out of the theatre after the show is terrible, but to be expected I guess. Concessions are typical of this...

I definitely came to the theatre not expecting anything great because we were two young adults, but boy was I wrong! A group of outstanding singers and actors, pulled off an amazing show. The set designs were simply beautiful. And the fact they pull of such specific scenes (without spoiling) flawlessly is jaw dropping! A lot of humour created and... more
Wow! Our boys gave us tickets to Aladdin for Christmas and I was so excited. The movie has been etched in my memory since my kids played it over and over again when it first came out years ago. After going to the show I was not disappointed. James Inglehart as the Genie was fantastic and hilarious, the costumes were... more
What a night we had at the Mirvish with the Aladdin production. This theater is a gem to (re)discover, seeting is great and confortable (no knee bouncing on the front seat).
The Aladdin production is a must see. Pleasure of the eyes, nice songs - great singers, and a fantastic casting. All of the participants are great - even with...

Who ever chose Iglehart to play the genie got it right. I thought I would be disappointed with whomever was going to fill Robin Williams shoes for this character, but he was perfect. The show was high energy, without a dull moment. It is a show for all ages. The costumes and the sets were colourful and detailed. I would... more
We saw Aladdin Show at Ed Mirvish last night, Dec 19, 2013. It was amazing, spectacular. The costumes, the vibrant colour, the lights. Jasmine was so pretty and Aladdin witty, Genie was the best- Hilarious, and even Wazir was so cunning. Everyone performed so well, excellent choreography, excellent dialogue delivery...We loved it ... would like to see it again and again... Five Stars for sure.
A wonderful, old theatre (used to be the Pantages) modernised. And a perfect setting for the new Disney musical, Aladdin.
Very colourful, high energy, poignant and very funny!
And the Genie is over-the-top wonderful!
Special effects (like making a very large man seemingly come out of a very small lamp) are great.
What a show! We LOVED Aladdin. The music, the colours, the settings - all came together to create the perfect show.
I highly recommend you watch it!
We coordinated a charity event here last night that was such a tremendous success! What an establishment! Thank you for your generosity - the benefits of which will have a ripple effect!
I Had really great seats...more leg room..lol...great show.
Went to see aladdin at the Ed Mirvish Theatre. I have seen many shows here and every time it is fabulous. Very good location on younge street, close to dundas square and all great attractions
One of the most amazing show I have ever seen!
Kids enjoyed it very much!
I would go to see this show again with pleasure.
Just went to watch Aladdin with my wife last night November 19th 2013. We had Seats AA 31 and 32, front row aisle seats. The production was absolutely amazing. the costumes so vibrant with color. The actors were all amazing, especially the Genie and Jafar. Music was excellent. It was very neat to be in the front row and be... more
Having seen other Disney Musicals transformed from animation to the stage,
my expectations were more on the Lion King, Beauty & the Beast level- I have to like the music and the singing to really like a musical. The score was generally weak or cute- The one exception is Tim Rice's lyrics and Alan Menken's music for "A whole new...

I had been to this theatre once before to see Phantom of the Opera and they have made some updates since then. One thing that hasn't changed is the small lobby and the tiny bathrooms! The theatre itself is a tight squeeze, but there is not a bad seat in the house. You can bring your food and drinks in... more
I was a bit disappointed in the changes in the theatre since the 1990s when Phantom was the main attraction at the theatre, however this building has a beautiful history, and has housed some fantastic productions. Recently attended the wizard of oz (must say not Andrew Lloyd Webbers best) it was a decent show, however this theatre will always be... more
Welcome to Toronto where all the old buildings eventually are converted to condos... Beautiful old theatre that should be saved. Hopefully they will incorporate the old theatre into what ever they build on top. Easy access by streetcar or a short walk from the University subway line. Lots of restaurants in the neighbourhood but they can be very busy on... more
We enjoyed a good performance of Cats at this theatre. I liked the way we were allowed to bring our drinks into the auditorium with us. We had an excellent view and all enjoyed the performance
Went in August to see the Wizard of Oz. The theater is in a great location on Yonge Street and is well maintained. The show was awesome and they seem to always have major shows like this, Cats and others. The entire family really enjoyed it.
We saw the Wizard of Oz here with the family and what a wonderful historic theatre. The level of detail in the architeture is absolutely amazing and there really isn't a bad seat in the house. We enjoyed our time here immensely.
Walked past the theater countless times and it was my first time to go inside yesterday. Absolutely stunning! Loved all the details and decoration! And great service too.
The Show was spectacular as well, with beautiful costumes and sets. Sure, there are bits and pieces that they could fine tune a bit more, but I had a lot of fun!!
I saw the Wizard of Oz performance and it was absolutely brilliant. Such an amazing show! The music, costumes, and sets were incredible and awe-inspiring.
I sat right beside the wall in the last few rows of the whole theatre, but that didn't bother me at all, I was so taken by the show that I was just glad I...

A beautiful old style theatre in the downtown district. Took in the Wizard of Oz musical. Were offering great discounts, definitely worth the value with the discount.
My partner and I attended the new Webber production of The Wizard of Oz in this great theater. The theater is bounded by two streets: Yonge Street ("front" entrance) and Victoria Street (box office and will-call tickets). It's a beautiful theater and well-run. We had 3 young women with 3 young boys sitting in front of us. As they sat... more
From the outside, it may look a bit drab, but inside this theatre is just gorgeous! I have been there twice, once in January to see the wizard of oz, and once many years ago to see Chicago! Everything is so elegant inside the theatre! The drinks are expensive so bring extra money! I have say in the forth row,... more
Maybe like me, you don't go to many theatre productions. And you know the plot of this story. And how can it be better than the movie? According to the literature, for over 70 years attempts to stage The Wizard of Oz have been compared to the movie from 1939 and been considered to fall short. The creative team staging... more
The Ed Mirvish Theatre is a beauty! From the outisde this theatre looks like a typical building on yonge st. but inside it looks like something out of a movie. It really is a spectacle of it's own. From the red carpets to the double story waiting area it felt almost like a movie set.
On to the show... The...

beautiful architecture, great view of the stage from any seat. Been here many times since my younger days. definitly going to be going back to see another show
Was an EXCELLENT performance! We enjoyed every minute of it. Colorful and full of adventure. We got to meet some of the cast after the show, Dorothy, 3 Totos, Glinda, Lion and TinMan came out and it was so nice to talk with them and be able to pet the doggies! Go see it before it leaves Toronto!!!
Absolutely magical. Wizard of Oz has always been a favorite story of mine (don't tell anyone). This was beyond my expectations. Dorothy, Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West were all fantastic with voices that were angelic. The production was extremely well done. While I could go on, I think my review is fairly obvious. Go see this before... more
Went to see Wizard of Oz, wich wasn't that good, however the theatre is amazing. Great acoustics and very comfortable seats with ample leg room (I'm 6'5"). Beautiful architecture to gaze at while waiting to enter the theatre.
Just saw the show for Mothers day. We were able to park in the parking lot ($20) across the street from the theatre (also now called the Ed Mirvish theatre). Great old theatre - we had a nice view of the stage from the Mezzanine level. I would suggest trying to get seats more to the middle as you can... more
Recently took my 85 year old mom, her sister, my sister and my daughter to see The Wizard of Oz at the Ed Mirvish Theatre.......we all loved it!! It is a must-see musical when in Toronto. The theatre is easy to get to and the seating very comfortable. Only complaint is that the ladies washroom is never big enough -... more
Seeing a show here is great because you can experience how this theatre looked like in the early 1900s. It was restored in the late 80s/early 90s by Livent for Phantom of the Opera. Infact, if you are outside of this theatre, on Victoria street, walk a bit south and on the south exterior wall of the theatre there is... more
What an absolutely stunning theatre. Must be a while now since we saw" Phantom" there in Toronto. Very nice.
Loved it!!!!! A group of us went recently, including a 10yr old boy, who was on the edge of his seat throughout the show. I think they did a great job and tackling a big movie. Personally for me it was the Wicked Witch ( Lisa Horner, who is also happens to be the same woman from the Ikea "start... more
Ideally situated opposite the Eaton Centre, the Ed Mirvish Theatre is billed as Toronto's finest vaudeville house in the 1920s. The façade has changed along with the players that take to its stage. Now, after being a comic theater house, motion picture palace and a contemporary cinema, it has been returned to the look that first made it famous. Canon Theater was formerly Pantages Theater.

The historic, 2,200-seat Canon Theatre began as a vaudeville and movie theatre in the 1920's. The then Pantages Theatre was the largest and most elegant motion picture theatre of its time. Throughout the year the ownership of the lavish theatre changed hands until a bitter rivalry between Famous Players and Cineplex Odeon let to an injunction forbidding the use of the theatre for motion... more
