The Econo Lodge Downtown, an Ottawa hotel, offers free breakfast and wireless Internet access to all guests. This hotel is near the Royal Canadian Mint, the Parliament of Canada and Rideau Canal
Within walking distance of downtown. Place somewhat shabby. Good staff. Unable to control the heat. Very comfortable bed. Excellent Internet connection. Moderately clean. Neighbourhood still in pre-gentrification state.
The hotel has come a long way over the past 3 months. They have painted the exterior and started to clean up the interior of the rooms. Great location and you can't beat the price and the free parking. Also free internet and the rooms are very large with a comfortable bed. Free breakfast in the morning. Room is a little musty smelling when you first open it up but if you leave the window open... more
cheap, clean room close to downtown. Perfect for one or two nights stay. Breakfast is good.
Stayed one night. The staff was friendly. The interior is easier on the eyes than the exterior.
It was a disturbing first evening in Ottawa. First thing after parking and coming out of the car, was approached by homeless person asking for money. Although that is not the hotel's fault. Then, when approaching the service desk, roofing in the "carport like" area is destroyed. Going to our room, we noticed the hotel rents for long stays, door were open on the ground level, really giving us... more
As the title says, we had very low expectations and the hotel lived up to them. The room had an odor and is very dated. I wouldn't say that there was anything good about the room but it provided us a place to sleep in a good location. Free parking was a plus. The hotel was packed so they must be doing something right. Overall, it served its purpose and the price was right.
Hallways and general facility was not good. Moldy smell. Rooms were better and included amenities not in all. Over priced - should have Motel type rates.
Reasonably priced, the Hotel Service and Cont. Breakfast is acceptable. Airconditioning is weak, otherwise the room was clean. Staff helpful. Moreover it's walking distance to Byward Market and Parliament Buildings.
This was one of the worst places I have ever stayed at. I have stayed at other Econo Lodges before and could not remember an experience worse. The room smelled of smoke. My throat was sore the next day. The carpet was stained, the bed covering had holes. Overall would never stay there again, and absolutely would not stay in any Econo Lodge again after this experience.
It is not the Hilton but it is cheap, it is right downtown and most importantly it has free parking. The décor in the rooms are dated and the hotel has a motor-court or motel like atmosphere to it but you can't beat the price and the location and the fact that you don't have to pay $40 for parking. There seems to be a lot of monthly tenants in the hotel too. Staff was great and nice that you... more
Room telephone was not working, connection was not restored till we left. Air conditioning was very poor - even with max setting room does not get comfortable till well past midnight.
Probably one of my worst ever hotel stays. Not clean. Bad smell & lousy place. No WiFi.
depressing ambience, you have to keep your curtain closed, other wise anybody can look at your room.breakfast terrible. for that kind of price it is a rip off.We cut our stay , we could not stand it. Only bed was kind off comfortable ,but blanket I was afraid to touch.
Got what I paid for. A cheap room. Rooms in desperate need of a complete makeover. Tired and unkempt.
The price was great, but the place was kind of a reck. Though it appeared some effort to renovate had been made, the quality of work was very poor and the rooms (especially the bathrooms) were already deteriorating.
Very convenient location close to Ottawa downtown core. Cozy but comfortable, clean rooms. We walked to parliament hill and enjoyed beer at a bar on the main shopping street. We feel that everything is within walking distance. This is most important for a visitor.
Room did not seem clean, although beds and towel were OK. There was a definite odour of smoke in the room even though I had asked for non-smoking....it was obvious that spray had been used to try to cover up the smell but it did not work effectively.
This place is a little run down BUT, to be fair, it was undergoing some renovations when we were there. I'm sure it's on the upswing soon. The price seems to be far better than other hotels in the area and it is only a short walk from the Market area. The staff were very friendly and treated us with a great deal of respect.
Even though I got what I paid for - a cheap room near downtown Ottawa - I was very disappointed with the whole experience. The motel really should be torn down rather than any attempt to bring it into modern times. It is like a step back in time with central court for parking and motel like rooms on the ground and second level. It looks like a lot of people live in some of the units as opposed... more
My room was close to the stairs, 3 am - 5:30 people were smoking and speaking very loud, running down the hall, loud music few doors down, call security for the music it took over 30 minutes to do something about it. Booked it night of stay on Expedia, had no issues checking in. Front desk gave us a good room. Although it is in a motel style, the parking lot is in the middle so it feels safe and secure. I wasn't expecting much as it was one of the cheaper hotels located downtown... However it was one of the worst stays I've ever had. The room looked like it hadn't been updated in years, there were stains on the sheets, wallpaper was peeling large gaping holes in the bathroom wall. The floors clearly hadn't been cleaned in ages as there were things like lipgloss under there bed. I would never... more
The room reeked of smoke even after the tiny bathroom window was left open to attempt to air it out. The "queen" sized bed was smaller than a double with two tiny pillows, sheets that did not fit properly and no extra blankets or pillows. The tv was missing a remote or just not working properly. The seals on the windows didn't seem to be working properly as there was condensation buildup on the... more
Needed a clean, quiet room to sleep after a long day to get ready for an early morning start. It was not spectacular, but served its purpose. Two complaints: 1) the bathroom fan, which was tied to the lights, was excessively loud. I couldn't go to the bathroom without waking my fiancé. 2) no coffee packet for the coffee maker.
It is a correct place if you don't like to pay hotel room with many services that you don't want to use (such as gym, business centre, etc.) and that have latest decoration style. It is a place to sleep, take the breakfast and leave. We went there with children and had to explain why people on next room were... more
Hallways and stairs in disrepair. Breakfast pretty skimpy.
Very affordable, downtown and on a major transit route. The facility shows its age but was acceptablly clean and free of bedbugs.
Hotel was enough for my stay. Was out the whole day most of the time. Room was clean. Staff were great! Don't expect it to be like the big hotel chains with nice pillows and stuff. FREE WIFI!
For 80$ a night with a group buy coupon, it's a perfectly respectable hotel well located and with parking. Free breakfast (think limited choices and sustainance more than enjoying breakast) and wifi are available. The room was fairly clean, the ceiling in the washroom was coming apart but apart from that, the room was big, the bed was comfortable, there... more
We rented a room and were very disappointed. The front staff were not friendly, the room was dirty, and building is old, paint peeling. The location is good and is downtown. The rooms are very
small and motel need upgrading.
The hotel staff was very helpful and nice. The hotel itself may look a little run down on the outside, but the room I got was very clean and comfortable, with a roomy bathroom, flat screen TV and good housekeeping. The location is very close to a few popular Shawarma restaurants, an Ethiopian restaurant and a decent mall that is in walking distance. If you wish to take the bus, you can purchase... more
Very disappointed in the over all cleanliness of the unit. It is an aged motel and in need of a lot of repairs. The décor was dark, dingy, and the furnishings well worn. The hotel is in a very bad shape, almost creepy. We were checked in into a dirty room. I will never return there.
Details: Room smelled of incense, TV remote partially working, missing lampshade on floor lamp, crushed lampshade on table lamp, bedside lampshades damaged with " Run for Your Life" written in one of them, phone message light would not stop blinking, damaged hair dryer plug, corroding towel rack, TV/stand dresser is worn and stained and all three drawers broken/falling apart and are stained and... more
The Econo Lodge is not quite the Laurier, but it is comfortable, affordable, and located a fifteen minutes walk from the city's major sites up on Rideau St. All rooms have air cool conditioning, which you'll definitly need in the summer time.

I can tell they're renovating certain parts. But skipping details, like they 'forgot' to finish. It's not clean. Sheets are, bathtub and carpet are. But matrass has stains, hairdryer is dusty etc. And SO MUCH noice at night. First night angry man yelling in hallway. Second night people talking and third night guests arriving: floor is stone/cement and makes the suitcases very loud.... Not to... more
Good value for the money . Bit shabby but for a hot shower and bed to sleep in its worth it. Close to down town and walking distance to the parliament buildings and rideau canal
I enjoyed my stay, the staffs are there to assist you when necessary.
Although it's not the most welcoming hotel from the outside (and the hallways had a bare concrete floor), the room was comfortable and clean. A comfortable walk into the centre of the city.
It was adequate for the purpose of our trip. We needed to pick up some visaa for a trip to Africa and the hotel was just minutes away. It only took a few minutes to get to the downtown market and other attractions.
Location is excellent . Rooms are very dated . The sink the the bathroom war barely hanging on the wall so I did not use it . Over all they tried to keep the room clean . My first try at the place. I wanted to go cheaper because I was in Ottawa only for one night.

We checked in @3:30am. The staff was very nice. He allowed us to have 1 more hour beyond the check out time. We really appreciated his kindness & understanding.
Was clean and hallway was under renovation. Room and bathroom was clean and comfortable however TV broke down. Old box style TV and they didn't have a replacement easily enough. Other than that for price, $75 a night was okay as close to Ottawa sites and Gatineau as well.
It was a good location for a tourist, but the condition of the hotel needs a bit of updating. I've been to other hotels , even cheap ones and is not professional to have rusted sinks especially in a downtown hotel. The TV's are outdated and it was shocking to see an old TV that is not a flat TV. With something as simple as a flat TV it can reduce space and make the room setting a bit more... more
Its no 5 star, but it was all we needed. The breakfast was better then I thought. Only complaint would be, having been beside a stairway it was very loud.
The parking lot was very poorly plowed
The front office was modern , very clean and desk personnel very nice.
The main section of the motel reeked in some areas while others were ok
The hallways were bare concrete.
The stairwells were in poor shape.
The bed and living area were clean and well maintained

As of Nov-Dec 2013 it is under renovations (corridors are all naked concrete & unpainted dry-wall) so beware. Location is very good, close to the embassy district, lots of restaurants nearby.
Was disappointed with my whole experience. This hotel leaves a lot to be desired. My room was not fresh, carpet had not been vacuumed in a while and the hallways looked like a construction site, quite dark and scary. The "continenta" breakfast was the most disappointing. Motel being renovated. Owners trying to make improvements. New doors, windows, bathrooms etc. but work still in progress. Beds comfortable. Bathroom clean. Door has no soundproofing at all. Staff was friendly. Street and sidewalks torn up for construction makes access awkward but nothing to do with the motel. A cheap place for a comfortable night sleep but not much more than a sleep.
Room was clean, office staff were very helpful (e.g., walked me to my room)
We booked based on price and close to downtown market + shopping areas. The doors were not painted the carpet is pretty old. Bed is okay and the bathroom was clean. Truly, this Motel is not that bad. Yes, the breakfast is not exactly gourmet, but for the amount of money that you save, you can go somewhere else. It is close to everything downtown and you have free parking, you save again. It. Has clean rooms, coffee makers, microwave, and refrigerator.
The receptionist was very pleasant and helpful although the breakfast was terrible and the room was smelling. We changed to another room that was brand new but the renovations were not done yet and so the door was not painted, etc. I would not suggest that to a friend. Maybe when the renovations are done.
Me and my boyfriend were here for 6 nights.
The Breackfast is amazing (Waffles, jams, muffins, tea/coffee, cereals, juices...).
Everything was clean and the receptionnist is very friendly and really want to help you.
The prices are very good!
Strongly recommend it!

You get what you pay for. Hotel was undergoing renovations. The Breakfast was not that great. Muffins, danishes and croissants etc were crusty. You are much better off paying the extra and go to a comfort inn. The Wifi was unreliabe It kept on dropping out. Don't take your teenage daughters there. I only stayed one night thankfully!!!
Yes it's the standard cheap hotel...stale smell and not very clean, only coffee no tea. These things are almost expected for the price they offer. The staff were friendly above and beyond the call of duty, we were very impressed. The rooms were "grubby", stains on chairs and carpets, also in the bath. Spent most of our time seeing Ottawa. The rooms were ok, could be better without motel smell. There was a lot of road construction which made getting to a little difficult. We could have done better with sometimes flickering lights and hiddened rooms in the hall next to the stairway. We did like the walking distance to downtown and price.
Having read the other reviews and checked out what can be online we were not surprised by our accomodations. The hotel is a little dated but we chose it for the location. We were able to walk to Byward Market and also to the Parliament building. So renovation work was underway at the hotel. Breakfast was basic free waffles, cereal and toast.
Needed a bed close to downtown for an early meeting. The Econo Lodge had a great price and was a short walk to Byward Market. Okay, so for the price of around $60 - $80/night (depending on how far in advance you booked), you just can't complain.

“ The motel room had been slightly updated but the entire facility didn't appear renovated. Some improvements were in progress. Very convenient location (5 min walk to downtown), plenty of restaurants and supermarkets around, bus near the entrance. Quiet, clean, friendly and helpful staff. Bad note: furniture a little worn out, 2 drawers broken, air-condition too noisy, wireless internet signal too weak and often loose the connection. About what you would expect for the price.
“Good for price and cleanness, breakfast was miserable.”
“The hotel is fine, and the staff are fair. Its not anything more then that. Basically you get what you pay for, and this was an affordable stay. However this was a very clean place. I have to admit that this hotel was one of the cleanest I've stayed at.”
“For the price and location it is very good for tourists. The staff is friendly and the breakfast had some variety. The hotel was 10 min. from center, on the bus line, and in a very diverse area with lots of different types of restaurants to choose from. It was also easy to get to by car.”
“In a case hotel works on its morning breakfast choices, it will help their business greatly.”
“Overall, nicely run. Friendly staff, clean room, cable, coffee maker, continental breakfast. Would be nice if they had some fruit with breakfast.”
“We were not supplied with coffee cups although a coffee maker was in room. There were only enough towels for one person and there were 3 of us.”
