nicely situated without any hotel amenities other than a restaurant downstairs, easy walking distance to downtown close to all restaurants and attractions, being there means not having to rent a car, close to residential area as well for a stroll
It may not be the most up-to-date hotel, but the vibe is awesome. The moment you step into the lobby , it suddenly feels like a blast from the past. The room I slept in had a crooked floor and outdated furniture, which I found incredibly charming regarding the fact that it is the oldest and still-standing hotel in Victoria.... more
When I told my Dad that I was staying in an older budget hotel in the heart of Victoria's downtown, he said, "Is that the Dominion?", and I said surprised, "Yes... it is!" He said, "Oh wow... I stayed there when I was in grade 11!" which would have been back in the late 1960's. "Well, I'm sure it's been renovated since" he replied.
When we arrived at the Dominion, I had recognzied this old...

We stayed at an older place called the Dominion. It was in downtown Victoria, but very reasonable and ok for a hotel. It had very friendly people working there. THis is a picture of the lobby there.
Our price included a free dinner in the restaurant adjoined to it (which was VERY good), and a free breadfast in their other little restaurant. I think the cost was about $49/night. (Canadian...

The hotel looks nothing like the photos. Its pretty run down, but is undergoing renovations. The major problem we had was that we had arranged for a crib, both at the time of booking and I also called ahead and made sure one would be available. Well, when we checked in, guess what...no crib. They said the only crib that they had available was in use. I indicated that was unacceptable as I had... more
Well I'm not so sure about the "Grand" but the Dominion is certainly "grand" value for money. We stayed here in mid September for just $79 CAD and this even included breakfast, a packed lunch and a 3 course dinner. The rates are even lower off season, I have seen the room and all the means advertised for $59 CAD.
We had a quiet room at the rear of the hotel with a view of a wall so I can't...

The Dominion is one of the oldest hotels in Victoria. The old restored building ha a lot of character and personality. It is not located directly on the Inner Harbour, but it's a five minutes walk. It is still in the heart of downtown Victoria, walking distance for most attractions. It's close to Fort street - the antique shops street.
Unique Quality: Location and atmosphere
We paid $80 per night for a luxury suite which is cheaper than a standard room over at the Empress. Plus the price included vouchers for dinner and breakfast.
Unique Quality: This is the oldest hotel in Victoria. The architecture is very nice and the entire hotel was in the process of being restored when we were there.
What a shame; this hotel was definitely below average, despite having the potential to be excellent. The hotel is located only a short walk from the central waterfront area, which was our primary reason for choosing it. The room was very dated, although relatively clean. The bathroom was poor, the pipework noisy, the reception staff not particularly helpful, and the... more
On arrival, I was very warmly greeted and told it was my lucky day as I had a free upgrade! Delighted! I have to say the room was ok, nicely decorated, looking out at a brick wall with a fan from the local restaurant running all the time, but it was ok, I just dread to think what I would... more
After carefully looking at many hotels online we decided on this one because it is a decent location and the pictures made it look amazing and romantic.

Hotel was old and needed some renovations but was overall clean and comfortable. Good downtown location with easy walking access to restaurants, shopping, etc. Decent breakfast buffet was included. Good value for what we paid.
Good service, older but comfortable rooms and great free breakfast. The waffles are a great start to the day. Free internet which shouldn't be a surprise but spent almost $300 for a fancy room in Vancouver and they wanted another $17/day for internet plus $1.25 per local call. This was a good choice for us. Right smack downtown as well... more
Nice hotel, a more retro-style. Convenient location, only about ten more minutes walking distance to city's most popular landmarks. It's a lovely hotel.
Stayed overnight with my teenage cousin for some downtown "girl time" together. Check-in was quick and friendly, and we received a complementary upgrade from a regular 2-bed room to a suite with a king bed/pullout couch.
The suite was very nice, spacious and clean with a bedroom separated by quite heavy glass doors (great for when you are sharing with...

Room was nice, clean, quiet, no smells. The location was very convenient. The mattress was somewhat uncomfortable, but it's hard to complain at that price.
Because we checked in later, we were supposed to have a basic room but got an upgrade. The outside of the hotel is less than impressive but the room we got was amazing. It was spacious and decorated nicely. But it was a room facing the street and there is a bar across the street, through the windows we could... more
The Dalton is in need of a spruce-up but despite our initial concerns with off-site parking and ageing lobby and hallways, our room was clean, comfortable, quiet and the bed allowed a great night's sleep. Reasonably priced for such a great location close to everything downtown Victoria has to offer.
even though it's an old hotel, the location is great. the washroom is really big and the room is clean. there was no hair dryer though, and the coffee machine is quite old.
I suppose we shouldn't have been surprised that their 'standard' rooms had no A/C, but it was 25 degrees outside and over 30 degrees inside. The 'standard' rooms are only slightly larger than the bed. The staff however, were very nice and did their best to accommodate us and find us a room with air. I did look in and see some suites when the maid was on our floor, and they looked very charming.... more
It was clean, friendly staff and accommodating, outside the room needs cleaning and the elevator is iffy
Old and a little tired, but ok as a place to sleep. Nice central location within walking distance of everything.
The room was too small considering we have booked for 2 adult and 2 kids. Parking charges are $10 but it is very small parking lot. Not more than 10 cars can be parked there. Hotel receptionist was not friendly. He replied my queries as if he was doing a favor for me. It is okay hotel if you are looking for cheap accommodation in Victoria.
the hotel had its best times maybe 40 years ago; the rooms are small and stale; the beds in bad condition - causing back pain; spartan breakfast but: good choice of organic tea - and: the Hotel is very centrally located and the rooms to the court are very quite.
This hotel is good value and close to the center of town. The room was a little dusty but the bed was clean and very comfortable. Unfortunately the staff were not very friendly (several times we walked past the reception desk on our way in/out and nobody said hello. In fact the only time the staff interacted was when we paid and at check-out. The breakfast was very basic complete with... more
Too expensive for the age of the facility, needs major upgrading of carpets etc. and lack of available amenities. For e.g.. no hairdryer, no air conditioning. Parking expensive for location and lack of security. On a positive note, the Tap House Restaurant next door was excellent.
There was a terrible plastic breakfast food served on plastic dishes. With a little effort, environmentally courageous steps could improve overall feeling.
Once a lovely hotel, now a bit bedraggled, but the staff was so helpful. Gave excellent recommendations for restaurants and a super afternoon tea experience!! Parking is available right next to the hotel (we did not use it as no we had no vehicle). Located on Yates just two blocks from the main thoroughfare, Government Street. We were generally happy with the hotel, but our room on the west side was above the bar which was intolerably noisy on the Saturday night we were there.
This hotel looks nothing like the photos shown . We stayed in the standard room and the fixtures and fittings looked like they had not been replaced in thirty years . The towels were threadbare and the bathroom barely functioned . The tv would not work and to be honest it was so noisy we probably would not have been able to hear it anyway . There was no hair dryer did get one sent to the room... more
We stayed on 4-6 July as it was on a wedding accommodation list as well situated and good value. The room was old fashioned which I do not mind and fairly basic. The hallways smelled of human urine and the comforter had a stain on it. Such an awesome old building that has been let go and needs to be gutted.
Clean and nice hotel, close to downtown and very close to bus stop. Good and helpful staff.
Elevator was slow One thought might be is When they clean a room for the last time They should make sure the alarm clock is turned off It was a suprize when it went off at 6 am in the frist morning Shower handle was challenging to work But I would come back again Thanks Dwayne
The city was great but the room left little to desire. The picture on the website is not what you get. Not even close.
Terrible, terrible hotel! It is the worst place I have ever stayed in. The rooms are old, smelly and dirty. It was so gorse that we worn our flip flops when we walked around in the room. It is the sort of place were you would see prostitutes working from. It needs to be torn down and replaced.
I wound not recommend this hotel at all!!! The room are very old and smell terrible. It feels like the type of place were you would see a heap of prostitutes hanging out!! We had booked for two nights but left and found another hotel after one!
The rooms in the hotel were really small and dingy. That's fine I didn't expect much from such a cheap place. The staff was friendly and the room was clean. However there wasn't hairdryer in the room which I found very strange and inconvenient. The feel of the entire hotel is very old and outdated. One more thing to... more
Bed sheets had blood stains, hotel room was clean besides that. Great location close to everything. Continental breakfast didn't include much
This hotel was the only one in our price range that still had rooms available. It was surprisingly nice. We showed up around 6:00 pm because we walked around the city that afternoon, and the front desk clerk upgraded us to a boutique room since it was so late. The room was very comfortable, and we loved how it was decorated. We will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Victoria.
Staff is great. Very pleasant and accommodating. Room was small, and old, with no air conditioner and open window with blinds out to a brick wall and other rooms. Parking is on the street for $10 a night. Location is good, but price was a bit high for the room quality. Breakfast is make your own waffles, cereal, some fruit, bagels etc.
Very outdated, I felt uncofmterable walking through the Hotel. The room was not worth the amount that I had paid for it.
The lowest price I ever found. Good location. People are nice. Very simple breakfast included. Old Room, bad lighting, noisy if let the window open.
Great location, close to a lot of night life and shopping. My first impression was the parking. Apparently they had parking right outside the hotel (saw at least 3 empty spots during our stay) but gave us parking a block away so we had to lug our things down the street. The room was clean. No screen on window so couldn't leave it open to air out. No air conditioning. But it was not too hot even... more
The location of this hotel for where we were going was great. The hotel itself is run down and the rooms look nothing like the picture. The furniture was old and marked and the TV was about 14 inches and the batteries were taped in the remote. The bed was very low to the ground and the bathroom was very small.
Clean rooms and friendly and serviceminded staff. A nice stay for a couple for some days in Victoria. Grretings from Bente from Norway.
Stayed one night on a weekend. Check in was good, staff courteous, booked a standard room with Queeen bed. There are a few things that were really great - the location (right downtown), staff (friendly) and rooms (clean and fresh). The Dalton seems to be the most reasonable in downtown Victoria. It was in a great location for walking around in the "tourist" area. Good hotel, older, but well located. Small room, but big bathroom and quality sheets on the bed. Windows opened, but was noisy from a fan. A bit expensive for what you get, but didn't have the breakfast buffet, that was included. The staff was friendly and helpful. Would I stay there again - maybe.
Good location and friendly staff, but the guest rooms are badly in need of update. Everything was old, felt a bit dingy. TV small and reception poor. Breakfast was less-than-basic (bread, jam, and whole oranges - that's it), wi-fi was unreliable (would go out for hours at a time, routinely). For this price, you can do much, much better.
Overall this is a more than reasonable hotel situated within walking distance from harbor and restaurants. It comes with some (paid) parking and has a pub right next to it. The hotel looks a bit tired/outdated but they are gradually renovating rooms and staff made a real effort to be hospitable. We would recommend this hotel but suggest that there are a few things the management could improve... more
My husband and I stayed at the Dalton for four nights while I was attending a conference in Victoria. Rooms are definately in need of remodeling. TV is ancient. Rooms are very small.
A lovely two star in the middle of town. Location and cheer are strong points. What was lacking in facilities was always made up by cheerful staff bustling to help out. Recommended.
Great value! Rooms are quaint and small, but just what you need if you aren't spending much time in the room and more time exploring Victoria. No complaints, however if you have loud neighboring rooms you'll be able to hear... more

Room was clean, breakfast very adequate. The hotel is within walking distance of downtown and good restaurants. Most importantly, the staff was wonderful!
This hotel was great for the price. It included a contenental breakfast with a waffle maker that I really enjoyed! The location is close to eveywhere in downtown Victoria. I had a pleasant experience.
Service was great, free continental breakfast was good. The location is great for walking all over Victoria. The exterior noise that was mentioned in some reviews did not bother me, but the noise transfer from other rooms was bothersome. I would not stay again due to the noise.
We were concerned with the age of the hotel when booking but were pleasantly surprised. The hotel has great character and the rooms were wonderful. Beds were comfortable and clean. Our only complaint was the water pressure in the showers in the morning was very poor. Overall our stay was excellent and will recommend to others.
The hotel is extremely dated, the lobby seems ok but when I got to my room, I was shocked to say the least. It was a good price, but not sure it was worth it. I am fairly easy to please, but if I had gone with my partner or a friend, they would have made me change hotels the second night or not even stayed. The breakfast waffles were really great though. Staff were pleasant and professional,... more

although the room was great, I had to hold my breath when I walked to my room because the hallways stank. It would be so great if this hotel could be upgraded. I love the location, I love the history. This hotel has a huge potential.. However, it needs to be cleaned up.
We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. This is THE oldest hotel in Victoria, so we decided to experience the charm. Our room was very small. Based on previous reviews, I was weary at first but our Dalton stay was better than expected........the staff were more than accommodating and helpful, the hotel was older but the rooms were extremely clean and presentable. Overall it's an OK hotel. Pretty much everything is mediocre. Location is good with lots restaurants and shops near by since we don't have a car. The hotel room is old and a little bit dark, but it's clean and well-maintained. Free breakfast (no eggs or meat) saves you a couple bucks. If you're travel on a budget but don't wanna live in hostels, this will be a good choice.
