i came here with my husband on a date and thought it was going to be a classier place, from what i had read about it. but it was okay, just not a fancy place, just trying to be i guess.
Cilantro's casual and friendly atmosphere hides behind a forlorn stucco storefront that would look New Mexican if it weren't on an urban strip of 17th Avenue. The walls hide a tucked-away garden courtyard with a veranda bar. The food here is always excellent, eclectic with feints toward California and Santa Fe. You can snack on sandwiches, pasta, or burgers (in this case, an elk burger), or... more
It was my cousin's birthday and we were looking for a patio to celebrate with fine wine and delicious food. Cilantro was a great choice.
We started on the patio with a couple glasses of wine and the pear & Gorgonzola flatbread - a long-time favourite that is still delicious. Then shared the feature prawn salad before had to move...

Expensive but worth it. We had their Pulled Elk Pizza. My mouth is still watering just thinking about it. Here's a link to their menu: www.crmr.com/wordpress/wp-content/upl...
we made reservations at Bar C for Mothers Day through Open Table on line reservations. When we showed up to the restaurant the note on the door said they were closed but we could check out Cilantro next door. so, that is what we did. the first person we spoke to at Cilantro said they were booked full and had... more
I have been to this restaurant a few times and have always enjoyed the food and service but after tonight I was very disappointed and will not return. I made reservations 2 weeks ago and when I got to the restaurant we had to wait 15 minutes before being seated to clean our table. When the table was ready they... more
We ate at Cilantro 2 weeks ago as a family of 4. Our meals were enjoyable however the wines are very expensive and we all felt there were better value restaurants in Calgary to where you can get pasta!
This restaurant was nice and quiet, but could get loud if full. Good service, average food. It will not be my choice the next time we go out.
We have been wanting to try this place and while in Calgary for New \years Eve, we made a reservation. Nice quiet table, excellent staff a. I had beef and my wife had the seafood pasta, both well prepared. Several wines by the glass and some very nice cocktails. A feature menu and lots of nice choices on the regular... more
Cilantro has been a favorite for years, especially for its BLT and vanilla crème brulee. Tonight's chef must have lost his/her grip on the salt shaker. My BLT was so salty I couldn't finish it (and I'm a dedicated salt addict). There was so much salt that it obliterated the taste of everything else. The pickled veggies that accompanied the... more
I was visiting my daughter and she suggested Cilantro for lunch. It was a chilly day so we sat upstairs overlooking the patio and veranda. It was lovely. We decided to have several different appetizers to get a full sampling of the menu. Each one was even better than the previous one. The seared salmon fishcakes and the beef tenderloin... more
I had forgotten how much I enjoy this restaurant. It has been around for ages and for some reason I hadn't been back for year. I rediscovered it on a lovely August afternoon. The service was excellent as was the food. And the patio remains one of hte best in the city.
We absolutely loved Cilantro. The food is all prepared fresh using local/organic ingredients where possible and is beautifully presented.
They had some very interesting cocktails, a great wine list and really yummy salads; the nicoise salad was absolutely fabulous.
This restaurant has a wonderful patio and very welcoming and superbly attentive staff - our server had a great sense of...

Last minute reservation.
Nice patio. Took forever to take our food order, but once in, food started flying in.
Food was ok. Mushroom soup seemed like chooped in a blender with the consistency of a sauce, more than a potage.
As for the linguini bolognese, the pasta was more like a bucatini and the sauce was too dry.
Good selection...

This was our first time to this restaurant and we enjoyed it immensely. We sat on the patio on a lovely summer evening. The food was great, the service was fantastic and we would definitely go again.
This is your date night extraordinaire spot if you can get onto the patio. It's expensive but for the most part delicious. One of my friends ordered the pasta special and basically got linguine with a bunch of mace on it - oddly made you want apple pie.
The lobster bisque is OUTSTANDING but they only make it once in...

This restaurant was good, not great. As far as expensive restaureants go, this is probably one of the better ones in Calgary... but I still expect a lot when I pay a lot, and I wasn't blown away by the food here. Good atmosphere though.
Although I've heard great things about Cilantro for years (22 and going strong), I've just never managed to make it there. I don't live nearby and it seemed too much trouble to bother. Well, I'm going to bother from now on. Everything that makes a dining experience - food, atmosphere, wait staff, seating, decor, portion size, wine list - was... more
Cilantro has been around for many years and it has remained very good to excellent all the way through. Favorites are the sea bass and black pepper linguini. Recommend the patio.
A nice evening with friends in busy 17th Ave. Staff were very attentive and we enjoyed a nice selection of wine by the glass. Meal arrived in good time with all guest served together. From the comments, all entrees were good quality. Mine was excellent and imaginative. A nice night out, at a restaurant that didn not over or underdeliver... more
We were "restaurant hopping" one night, where my friends and I went to different places and sampled their food and drink.
The night we were at cilantro was quite a cold rainy evening, and, although the hostess found us a table, we had to wait outside for it because there wasn't any seating waiting area. When we were taken to...

From beginning to end, Cilantro does not disappoint. Their use of fresh ingredients and wine selection, combined with an intimate ambiance…makes Cilantro a must stop in Cow Town!
It was a special occasion that called for a special location. Hence, this restaurant. We were here when it first opened, and many times since. However, we have not been back since 2005. The patio is the best. Sheltered and classy, just like the rest of the restaurant. We had the goat cheese and a shrimp appy, both excellent. That... more
You must try the Tenderloin appetizer and the peanut butter chocolate cake - both to die for! Sea Bass as an entree are excellent too. Beautiful patio, great service, wine list and atmosphere.
Great ambiance, food and service. Chicken and pancetta pizza = fantastic. Great caesar salad ans top it off with a mouth watering Peanut butter chocolate dessert = mmmmmmmmm.
I have not been to Cilantro for approximately10 years. Back then, it was a quiet restaurant, timely service and ambience suited to a meal with a loved one. The food also represented West Coast and even local produce. How things have changed. Well some haven't - the decor is the same as then - all tables and walls the worse... more
Had an excellent spinach salad but my friend took the waiters suggestion and had the shrimp done with Asian salad - wow it was good! I had the black pepper chicken pasta which was good but again my friend took Ryan's advice and had the chicken flat bread pizza - the best. They are known for their pizzas and we... more
We were there in a decent sized group. Not only did all of our meals come out together they were all hot and there were no complaints. All ten of us had a very lovely evening.
You would not think it from the outside but this restaurant has a neat patio/garden, it is well enclosed so you don't really know you are in the middle of a main through road! Nice food but not anything special.
We got a table upstairs by the pizza oven, which added to the coziness. Ambience was very very good. Food was quite good. Very inventive menu. Sadly, though I crave the taste of cilantro, there wasn't any on the menu; and I didn't find out until AFTER THE MEAL from the waiter that the chef always has a few handfuls... more
Went to Cilantro on a Saturday night at approximately 7:30 pm. Although we did not have a reservation they were able to accommodate us, albeit at a somewhat awkward table (right beside the waiter's prep area) - at the last table available in the restaurant. It's a smaller restaurant, so the conversation volume seemed a little loud. Very good server,... more
I have long wanted to try Cilantro as I have heard many good reviews about it and boy, they weren't kidding. I think this is one of my new favourite upscale restaurants in Calgary. We were choosing between Cilantro and Petite, which I have also heard good reviews about but chose Cilantro for it's more varied menu and cozy decor.... more
Shawn is the best server here hands down, meal takes awhile but is worth it, small and intimate but worth every min and dime. Their steak and risotto combo is the best in town hands down.
Come on - I said it's average - doesn't that sum it up? Price, ambience, food quality... average.
New Years Eve. The noise in the restaurant was simply horrendous. One rowdy obnoxious group ruined a special evening, not just for our family but for many of the other diners also. They were not just loud, but also stamping their feet, banging their chairs. Totally unnecessary behavior. The staff were either unable or unwilling to do anything about it.... more
Although the food was very good (if over priced) getting hit on the temple by a cork thrown by one of the waiters really ruined my birthday evening out.
Behaviour that I wouldn't expect in a fast food joint was in evidence in this restaurant. Apologies were made and an attempt at compensation was offered but I would have to...

Great place for lunch. We didn't have dinner but we heard it was good also.
We had the best sandwiches we have every had. Well second best so that is saying something. I had the Meat loaf sandwich. Out of this world. It was made with ground beef tenderloin. My wife had the tuna sandwich which she loved. The waitress...

On arrival, had to ask for table to be cleaned. They hadn't prepared for dinner service. Glass of wine was served from bottom of bottle and tasted as if it was off and had sat too long. Sent it back for another brand from fresh bottle. Waiter kept looking away as if his attention was somewhere else as he's taking... more
Always one of my favourite restaurants in Calgary. You can always count on a great meal, friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere.
It had been a long time since I'd been to Cilantro's, and now I wonder why I stayed away for so long. Fantastic food, friendly, knowledgeable service in a very warm and welcoming environment adds up to a great night out.
First time visit and definitely not the last. On short notice they received us to a really nice table for two, in the back. If you can get the table by the window overlooking the patio and garden area I'd recommend it, my wife was so happy there. We were greated kindly, our waitress was very knowledgable, from the wine... more
The food is interesting and very good. The portion sizes are generous – we had an excellent meal sharing a salad, “flatbread” (pizza) and desert, having plenty to eat, and resulting in a very modest bill. The service was outstanding – knowledgeable and friendly. When the server correctly sensed that one of us was not absolutely happy with our shared... more
I am a vegetarian so eating out can be challenging, although the menu hosts some vegetarian options, the server suggested creating an entree for me of portobello mushrooms, mashed potatoes and seasonal veggies, which was delicious. I was impressed with the staff's knowledge of food and drinks. The rustic feel and savory dishes create the perfect atmosphere for a romantic... more
These guys are pros. Catering or dining in.. it is a no brainer.
Its a new age mexican cuisine, and they do put cilantro in nearly everything if you do not like the "soapy" taste of cilantro in your food, this place isnt for you but. its very cheap and the portions are very large. super cheap and tons of tequila drinks specials
The best wild mushroom soup I've ever had
Still good after all these years.
Exceptional food, classy environment
Great atmosphere excellent service this is a must for a special occasion.
Not very good service, cold food

Visited on June 2nd, 2006, after a favorable memory from years ago. It was a hot and sunny day and the attractive patio was all full, but the food and service inside were still great. The waitress was knowledgeable, friendly without being too familiar. This restaurant offers about 20 wines by the glass which is a nice treat if you and your guest can't agree on a bottle; which was our case! ;) I... more
A Southwestern California Cuisine restaurant may now be a cliché, but this place was one of the first and the food is consistently wonderful. The menu includes pizza with fresh pear, gorgonzola and Chilean sea bass with southwest tamale and ancho citrus chili sauce. The wine list is extensive, with more than 20 wines available by the glass. The decor manages to be both casual and elegant, and... more
A rustic decor composed of brick, aged woodwork, and wrought iron adds a certain charm to this casual establishment. The menu has a Mediterranean sensibility, although it pulls influences from California and Asia as well. Wood-fired pizzas are extremely popular, crowned with exotic ingredients and flavorful sauces. You'll also find chicken breasts dressed with savory toppings and a wonderful... more
