okay...so i'm a sucker for a stampede

when I worked with CBC i really had the privilege to enjoy the Calgary Stampede to the fullest - seeing all the events and enjoying the buildings - but also getting to have Tom Jackson, Barrage and Fred Penner perform in our tent everyday....GOOD TIMES!

Woo, Stampede! Everyone loves to whine about Stampede like they're the first ones to do it. But just like people that gripe about how Mothers Day is a greeting card company manufactured holiday, I tune them out. Because, even though I dislike steep prices combined with mediocre food, what I dislike even more is a party-pooper. Even though they're mandatory to invite. You know the song:

- The Stampede is very expensive
- A lot of people are drunk there (at any time of day)
- Rides and passes cost a lot unless you grab the discounts
- There are a ton of people there
- Everyone is going to be pretending to be a cowboy/cowgirl

We enjoyed the Stampede very much but its way TOO expensive in my opinion. I almost passed out when I saw the admission for 1 adult is $16.00, thats OUTRAGEOUS. The Calgary Stampede is marketed as the biggest show on earth and it is a pretty big show, but to me it just seems like an oversized amusement park with a rodeo thrown in for good measure. This is probably just because i've gone to it too many times. the real reason to go to the stampede is because of the live perfromances. They almost always manage to wrangle a few good bands to play there... more

Fondest memory: As you can see, at the smaller rodeos, you get about as close to the action as anyone would want to...!!! These are the Chuckwagon Races. They can be very dangerous both for the riders and the horses. But they definitely are exciting!

The wild, wild west at its best! It's expensive, but definitely worth it! Grab a beer and a side of beef and settle in to watch the rodeo!

The Calgary Stampede, in my opinion. But you know, if you can't find a local rodeo outside the city, go to the Stampede and just avoid the obvious junk. Go to the rodeo and the chuckwagon races. They're great!

Favorite thing: Go to the Calgary Stampede which takes place every July. The parade is great and there are always free pancake breakfasts downtown! Don't miss the chuck wagon races either.

Fondest memory: 1988 Winter Olympics. It meant 2 weeks off from University and the chance to see the best athletes in the world compete.

Although it's best known for hosting rodeo activities at Calgary's annual Stampede event, thoroughbred and harness racing takes place here much of the year, and facilities are available for trade shows and conventions throughout the year. Even if you don't make it for Stampede, you might want to walk around the grounds and take in the ambience. The casino operates year-round in Big Four... more
