December 2010 re-visit post here

Original post below:

This was a far cry from my usual pattern of seeking out new eats. First off, this mission required an extended drive way out to the community of Port Moody – a quaint little place with an older downtown core near the water but... more

Location SUCKS especially if you're using buses. I heard they have awesome cake rolls, puddings and strawberry daifuku, so I always wanted to try their baked stuff.

I don't know the rules of this cakery, but do I have to order if I want to buy anything? I walked in there with my husband at 11:30 on Thursday and there was 1 lady standing behind the counter, looking at us like "You're not... more

just love their strawberry and green tea rolled cake.
(best of all, it's Not too sweet!)
You'd better go early to grab what you want especially on weekends.

Japanese-castella at its best! Purchased my son's birthday cake there. 8" round Chocolate castella cake garnished with very subtle and light cream and lots of strawberries and blackberries. The cake was ever so delicately sweet and fluffy, the cream was also light and just right, and the fruits were fresh as well. If you are into the Japanese style cake, I'd definitely recommend that you check... more

The only reason this place didn't get five stars is because the location really sucks, especially if you are bussing :(

Anyways I decided some pudding might make finals week better so I decided to make the trip out. When I was in Korea this summer all I ate was pudding, but I found it hard to find good pudding here. WELL, NOW I HAVE CAKE-YA!!

I bought the original, matcha, and royal milk tea... more

Very friendly hardworking ladies here make awesome fluffy cakes. They recently did a fantastic job on a custom birthday cake order for me. Only criticism I could make is they are a little skimpy on the fruit sometimes when things like strawberries are not in their prime season.

Delicious chestnut cake, great service. I called the morning I needed the cake and they offered to set one aside for me. Chestnut is my dad's favourite type of cake and it definitely did not disappoint.

I picked up some green tea shortbread cookies too ($2 for 4 cookies) which were quite crumbly but delicious.

Will definitely return for more high quality desserts!

If you're in the area and love desserts then check this place out.
Got all their Caramel Cream flavours and the Matcha Cake Roll. So good and I know they sell their stock to other Japanese shops like in Richmond (Izumiya market) so you can check them out there if Port Moody is too far away.

Cake Ya is a lovely Japanese bakery located in Port Moody off the beaten path on Clarke Road (a few blocks away from Rocky Point). They specialize in cream pudding with a Japanese fusion twist: Custard Creme Caramel, Match Creme, Black Sesame, etc. As you are prepared to pay for your goods, you are immediately distracted by the beautiful cake rolls: Matcha Red Bean, Chestnut, Strawberry... and... more

I ordered chestnut cake from Suzuya near Nikkei Center.
They can delivery Cake at Suzuya once a week.
The cake was defrostedone.

They sometimes send some cake to Events at Nikkei Center.
Those cakes are also not fresh.

This place is a hidden gem! I bought the Chestnut cake once and now my mom is hooked! If you like the chestnut cake at Anna's cake house then you MUST come here and check this place out. The chestnut cake is not too sweet and they give you LOTS of chestnut filling. Oh and their black sesame shortbread is really good too :)

I'm not exactly sure what Japanese cakes are, but I like it!

I bought a semi-sweet chocolate cake to share and it was delicious. This cake was more dense, but soft and not too rich. It wasn't overly sweet, which my husband liked. Next time I'll try their macha sponge cake with cream filling.

If you don't want to drive out to Port Moody, you can buy them at Suzuya Japanese Market.... more

This is a "Cakery", not a regular bakery. They don't carry things like bread.

Have tried: Soufflé Cheesecake, Mont Blanc (chestnut cream), and Chocolate Banana Roll Cake. I liked the cheesecake best, followed closely by the roll cake. Mont Blanc wasn't as yay as I had hoped. I think I was thrown off by the huge loaf, since I've only seen single-serving ones before. By the way, all their cakes... more

I like this place! Has the Jap style min blanc that is not too sweet. Also had okinawa style shortbreads but not much to say about that. It was this really white shorbread cookies sprinkled with sugar? At first I thought I had to bake it more? But the mon blanc was excellent and other desserts look very yummy. The hours are bit off as it closes at 6, I can barely make it by the end of the day... more

* Japanese cakes *

What an unexpected location for a Japanese cake bakery - all the way out in Port Moody. Go figure!

I would have never have found this place if it wasn't for Sachi M's (yelp.ca/user_details?use…) tip. Thank you, Sachi!

This very small little bakery was staffed by two Japanese women who were busy at work behind the counter making fresh cakes, custards, and daifuku. It seems... more
