This was probably the worst service I've ever had. I was a little nervous ordering my steak medium rare (since this varies from place to place) but our waiter assured me that if it was too rare they could fix that. Our meals were delivered; and we were basically ignored from that point on. My filet was so tough that... more
I had dinner at this restaurant during my recent trip to Halifax. I sat outside on a nice evening and enjoyed watching the people and nice breeze from the harbor. I had the lobster poutine with a lobster tail on the side. Both were cooked properly and very tasty. I was happy with the food. My service was slow but... more
Four of us with a five year old which changes the dynamic somewhat. Kids menu was good. Two had PRIME RIB, one had SURF & TURF, and one had FILET: all were good without being over-filling. Service was good (with a five yr old you don't/can't wait too long) and drinks were good. Nice atmosphere, not loud, not cramped, comfortable... more
Noticed this restaurant as we were walking around Halifax and thought we would give it a try. Liked the look of the outdoor patio but soon realized it was quite loud when Harley's and Tuner cars were accelerating past the patio. After a drink we asked to move inside and were quickly accommodated. The steak and lobster were great. Service... more
Had the twin lobster tails. After eating whole lobster all over the Maritimes and working hard to get at the meat it was nice to have to do little to enjoy this meal...The tails were very large and well worth the price, which was very reasonable. The service was excellent also
Baton Rouge is very well situated in the heart of downtown Halifax, just as you come into the city and close to many hotels in the old Morse's Tea building. From the moment you walk in, you notice the elegant yet classic interior decor, making great use of the buildings rich history and rustic charm. The hostess and bar staff... more
We had just arrived in Halifax and were looking for something near where we were staying so the hotel staff recommended Baton Rouge. I had the prime rib sandwich and my Mum had the Baton Rouge burger both great. They also serve a lovely Malbec if you like a nice red with your dinner. The service was excellent and staff... more
This was my 5th or so meal at this location so I will note first that all my other experiences were very positive. On our last visit however, the service was really slow. We four were seated quickly and our drink orders taken. Then we waited and waited...no drinks. One of the other servers even made note of it and... more
The food was good, the service was okay, but it was a little pricey, especially for Halifax. There was a ton of staff on, but most of them didn't seem to be doing much.
A friend and I were starving after a long day of meetings, but we were not interested in the bar or pub scene - all we wanted was good food and a glass of wine! We stumbled onto Baton Rouge and were attracted to the posted menu (specifically a steak with blue cheese) and were not disappointed. After reading reviews... more
Also was our first time to Halifax. We were looking for a break from seafood (although the seafood is excellent in Halifax!). This was listed as a steakhouse.
Decor very nice. Service a bit on the slow side. As a result, food did not arrive very hot. We probably should have mentioned it but had been waiting and were hungry!!...

Compared it to the Keg and the food meat / steak was not at all worth the price , service was average .the upstairs was dusty and there was window shade for direct in your eye sun light , I never mind paying good money for a meal if it's good mine was cold getting attention from the server was... more
Solid, but not outstanding, choice for steak and lobster. Excellent service @Thomas. Nice atmosphere. Convenient location to the pier.
Children's menu had large portions (burger and fries, chicken fingers and fries). New York sirloin with peppercorn sauce did not disappoint except for size (only offered at 12 oz) but not one of the best I've had. My spouse said the...

This restaurant was in a great location -- right across from our hotel, so we simply walked there.
We came here for dinner with great expectations, and all of them were fully met.
We were seated promptly -- downstairs near the bar. There were no crowds, since Happy Hour was over, it was a weekday and it was off-season. There...

My husband and I went for dinner at 6:30 on a Friday evening. We were sorry we missed Happy Hour which ended at 6:00. We were promptly seated upstairs and were immediately impressed with the atmosphere-- a renovated tea exporting business. My husband and I shared a delicious house salad and each had the linguini with shrimp and scallops. We... more
Good RIbs and Chicken, decent wine selection at decent prices. Service was fast and attentive but not fake or pretentious, went early, about 6pm on a weekday. Overall, good experience will go back.
They also had outdoor setup, I ate inside, nice building near casino/historic prop.
After dinning in the Halifax area for a week and paying top dollar for any wine, stopped here and found they were one of the few places in the city to embrace corkage. Way to go! The ribs were great and the service great. If your tired of paying $40 (before tax and tip) for a $12 bottle of wine,... more
Traveled two hours with friends to try this place out on good Friday it was not busy at all four of us got the ribs one salmon and one seafood pasta the pasta dish was the only one that was hot the ribs ranged from cold to cold and burnt over cooked and very little taste should have sent it... more
Ribs!!! They truly are the best in the city, and the shoe cut fries are my favourite as well. The only downfall is the ribs are so amazing I haven't tried any of the other entrees yet :)
This was my first time dining at Baton Rouge. I have heard mixed reviews from family members but my personal experience was fantastic. The atmosphere was great. Our warm greeting was inviting! Our order was taken in a timely manner and our food was delivered in a proper time span. The dishes that we ordered we fantastic. The dessert menu was viewed but was declined due to a satisfied belly. I... more
We reserved a table only to be placed in the bar next to a window with a cold draft. So we were moved. Hardly anywhere to hang a winter coat and given the weather, one was needed. We ordered drinks which got lost between our first table and our second table. The waitress seemed disengaged and bored. The beef was... more
Had a great dinner with our two teenagers. A slight miss on our meals was caught by the waiter before serving. His response and management's made an everyday fun night into something noteworthy. We were overwhelmed by the efficiency and gracious attitude with which the issue was resolved. We always tell our kids that the mistake isn't the issue, it's how it's deal with it that really matters... more
Went for a family supper and my daughter described the food as delicious. Service was great and the ambience was comfortable. I would recommend for a decent value for dollar meal in downtown Halifax. Getting into the restaurant if you approach from the North side can be difficult. The traffic is quite hazardous.
Service was great, made a reservation and ended up there early and our table was ready. Was not a fan of the Cesar salad, but the ribs were amazing!! Will definitely go again.
We visited Baton Rouge for Valentines day. They had a predefined menu to pick from for the evening. We started off with a calamari and a caesar salad. This is where my gripes are. They were both bland and nothing special. I have had better at several restaurants in the Halifax area. With that out of the way, now onto the good. I had the prime rib which I have had at other Baton's before and... more
The service was great... Food was just mediocre. The cheese dip was clearly made with cheese whiz or velveeta....the ribs were skimpy but tasty...it's hard to beat the MicMac Tavern. Atmosphere similar to the keg.
My boyfriend and I dropped in on a Saturday evening without a reservation (our only mistake...) but were greeted immediately and seated at the bar. Normally, I'm not a fan of eating at a bar but the dim lighting, full-back high chairs, and spacious counter made it feel intimate enough to not be too "exposed." The bartender took our food... more
I had not been to Baton Rouge before, but it it was on my list to check it out.I liked the look of the restaurant, in an historic building near the Halifax waterfront. Our waitress was friendly, helpful, and very good. Excellent menu and a adequate wine list - it would have been nice to see one or more of the local mini-breweries represented on the draft beer list. Our party enjoyed the ribs and... more
Stopped here for dinner one night before heading to the casino - waitress was attentive, food was very delicious, and great atmosphere as usual! Love coming here because you are in and out in no time, but not hurried whatsoever, with a great meal!!!
We ate at Baton Rouge for dinner in late December. The food was great and the service was very good. Our server was really friendly and took an allergy very seriously, which was nice. We left really happy.
Went with a group of friends to dinner on New Year's Eve and had a great time! When we arrived, our table was ready and we were sat quickly. Our server was very friendly and knowledgable. We had our Christmas party here last weekend and I was very disappointed and so glad I was not paying for it myself.... the Caesar salad was the poorest excuse I've had for a salad I had four croutons, a few pieces of parmesan cheese and some dressing with no taste made of oil.....my steak which I ordered well done... more
We dined there Dec 11 2013 . I ordered the pork chops and ordered it well done when it arrived and I cut it was raw inside with blood dripping out of it. I was really hungry so I at the mashed potatoes. The waitress never cam back to check on our table there for I could not say anything.... more
On a recent visit here, my wife and I decided to eat lightly. She had a salad, which she said was not very tasty and kind of uninteresting. For my part, I decided to have two appetizers: potato soup and calamari. The soup was somewhat glutinous and, I thought, had little flavor. The calamari was inedible - rubbery and greasy,... more
We went to Baton Rouge in Halifax for lunch today. Our meal started off with a great soup, then we had the best ribs we've ever had in a restaurant. They were fall off the bone with an excellent BBQ sauce. This was served with French fries, which were also excellent. The service was very good, our waiter was very... more
This was my second trip to this restaurant and it was not a disappointment. The service was great and our server Mike, provided great suggestions on food and wine. Went to Baton Rouge for their beer and ribs special. First time in the Halifax location. The decor is very suitable for the locale. Nice exposed beams within. My wife and I went to the Baton Rouge to try it out and were pleasantly surprised. The ribs were very good (this is the main reason I went, the ribs) and the service outstanding. I been there twice in January and July of 2013. The location is convenient in downtown close to the waterfront and walking distance from Marriott Harbor front. Drinks and food are average to very good based on the day. The service has always been friendly. Bit over priced for the quality.
I recently dined at Baton Rouge for a business lunch. The service was outstanding where our server Donna could not do enough for us (I only wish there were more people in the hospitality business such as this lady!). I went for the fish & chips (very good) but what was outstanding was the cream of chicken home made soup.... more
Good location downtown and close to waterfront and hotels. Food is always excellent. Staff is efficent and friendly
We ordered surf and turf and were disappointed at how salty the food was! I scraped off the over abundent spices. Even the mushrooms were excessively salty. Steak was good to great. Lobster was a small scampi sized tail but flavorful. Ironically steak was saltier than the lobster!
A nice restaurant in an old historic building, parking can be difficult ( as it is in all of the downtown core), but the Sheraton next door usually has vacant spots underground.
This was our first visit here, and we were here to celebrate a birthday. Our waiter ( Mike) was awesome! His recommendations spot on. The ribs were great,...

I'd received a number of recommendations for their ribs & chicken combination but found it lacking. The ribs were "fall off the bone" as advertised but far too salty to taste good. The chicken tenders were 2 minuscule pieces of chicken battered in the same coating as the fish. It was odd to say the least.
The appetizers and soups...

Myself and four coworkers went there for the first time for lunch. Each of us enjoyed our meals. Large portions. The soup of the day was included and delicious. We shared a very large piece of chocolate cake. The restaurant has a unique layout with a large upstairs area.
A nice restaurant in downtown Halifax, also easier to get too if you are staing in a nearby hotel, otherwise parkign difficult. We've never required a reservation as it hasn't been that busy. This has been our 3rd time and altough we love Baton Rouge in Quebec and Ontario, this one hasn't been as good in comparison. Great veggie sandwich... more
Went for lunch and chose from that menu. It was conveniently located and in a great old historic building. It was fairly empty, but it was late for lunch. Service was fast, friendly and professional. There was a great wine list, very impressive.

Four of us went to dinner - all very much enjoyed our meals. Spinach dip was very good. They brought a small dessert for a birthday with a sparkler on it. Waitress was very attentive. This was my first visit and was not disappointed! The server was attentive and friendly. The ribs were terrific! There should have been a vegetable included with the ribs and potatoes in my opinion. Healthier and more color would have been a good addition. Prices were affordable as well.
Good downtown location in Halifax opposite the water front. The food is good and the service is good. The menu choices are good and the prices are fairly reasonable. There were a few staff Christmas parties happening while we were there, so it was a bit noisy. The overall atmosphere is quite nice. We will go back again!
