Serving Fine Steaks and Wine Since 1959
History
Established in 1959
Founded by the late Harry Barberian, Barberian's Steak House is Toronto's authentic, original steak house experience. Today Arron Barberian manages this jewel on Elm Street.
Serving Toronto's finest since 1959. Over 2,900 selections on Toronto's most complete wine list
This is one of the first steakhouses I've been to and I found it to be a treat. The meat is so juicy and tender; it's perfectly cooked. The other elements of Barberian's Steakhouse, the atmosphere and service, are just as great.
“Don’t let the name scare you”, this circa-1959 steakhouse in the Downtown Core is a “classic” for “mouth-watering” cuts, an “exhaustive” array of wines and “professional” service in “cosy” digs with an “old boys’–club feel”; some say “time has not been kind” (it “rests on reputation”), though “nostalgic” types still tout it for a “high-end” treat.
Not getting enough protein? Get thee to Harry Barberian's upscale steakhouse, which has been going strong since 1959 (his son, Arron, has since taken over). The room is cozy in a clubby way, with dark woods and framed newspapers. The menu rarely changes, but you won't hear any grousing -- the crowd is too busy sipping martinis. The highlights are the eight steaks, from 9-ounce sirloin to... more
Barberian's is one of Toronto's most famous steakhouses. This bastion of meat, once considered slightly off the beaten path on low key Elm Street was founded in 1959 and has served its share of the nation's Prime Minister's, celebs and Hollywood royalty.
Great service, ambiance is good. steak was good but I guess was to hyped about the place got disappointed a bit with the steak. Price was reasonable but hard to get a glass of wine Under 30 bucks. Escargots were very disappointing maybe more garlic butter to add a bit of hype to it.
I've had better for better price. Drinks are well served, and pop-overs are delicious. I would return.
#sucks: Steak was undercooked, had to return it and I never do that! they ran out of beer. I had no access to my pellegrino until I asked him, guess he thought it was expensive wine. ..never again!
Hy's is the way to go!
Had a great dinner out with friends last night. I had been to Barberians a few years back and was not surprised to discover little had changed. This place originally opened in 1959 and I'm pretty sure it looks exactly as it did back then. This place is very old school and you can immediately tell they have a lot of "regulars" -- people hug and high five as they enter and the guy at the door was... more
Old school steak house at it's finest. We received great service from the moment we walked through the doors. Loved the complimentary pickled platter they bring to the table. My steak was cooked to perfection as was my husband's. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service. We mentioned to our server that it was our first time there - they brought us out a complimentary dessert (chocolate... more
Wow.
Barberian's is something of a legendary spot. It's an old school steakhouse, not the kind of place you find many of anymore. It's not changed much over the years, though I think they've had to adapt a bit to modern era realities (the dress code is less stringent than it was in the past, I think...)
You're here for steak, probably. Really, really good steak, and you're not afraid to pay...

Consistently poor service every time I've been here. Meals components are severely staggered across all courses, mistakes in orders, and they don't fix it. Sadly, once the waiter realises he has flubbered everything up, he stops caring because he realises that there is going to be no tip for him or the kitchen and then your dining experience spirals even further down hill.
My advice: Buy the...

Had dinner with my wife on our last night in Toronto. Service was very slow and the restaurant was not busy at the time. There was no atmosphere in the place. Many staff walking around. Wine list is massive and very pricy.
Had a bottle of Malbec from the house wine selection. Ordered steaks and a side dish of onion ring. Waited over 30mins for the food. Side order was not delivered and waiter...

If you are looking for a mouthwatering steak, cooked to perfection, do not look any further, the Barberian serves it at a more reasonable price than Jacobs.
We had dinner here this weekend and it was simply amazing! We both ordered steak and it was so delicious. The service was wonderful and we even had an opportunity to check out the wine cellar which was beautiful! We will definitely be back again!
always a great steak, and the service and ambiance is unique and special. The private room downstairs is a great place for 'power dinners' and parties. Best wine cellar in the city
I thought I would be giving this place more stars, but maybe it got hyped up too much in my head?
I ordered the centre cut top sirloin steak with potato and my friend ordered the grilled Atlantic salmon steak dinner with rice. Despite it being a steakhouse, I think I enjoyed the salmon over my steak.
Both were very good, but I do have to give them kudos for cooking that salmon steak perfectly...

When I first saw the menu I thought it was priced a little high. Worth every penny, best New York strip I've ever had. Everything about the steak was awesome. Juicy, melted in your mouth and very flavorful. Even the bread and vegetables they gave you before the meal were good. Definitely try it and ask to see their wine cellar with over 25,000 bottles it's very impressive.
Although food is a good quality, the very inflated prices are not justified. This place is just not worth the expense.
My experience here is awful. The restaurant was recommended by several friends who were with me and they were surprised at how bad the food and service are compare to their prior visit. We went on Victoria Day. The restaurant seemed deserted and short staffed. Our waiter seemed to be rushed and trying to spend as little time with us as possible. A few word here and there while walking by. I... more
The decor was interesting: red walls, exposed beams, guns/rifles on the beams/walls, and the women's bathroom must have been added not too long ago, it was in an odd place. It was stocked with mouth wash and such though. The food was better than expected, they definitely know how to do steak and do it amazingly well! They also had an amazingly impressive list of wine. This is a great go-to... more
$100 meal at a fine dining STEAK HOUSE and can't get the steak right?
Came here with my buddies on Friday night. This meal was hyped up for us - and was definitely looking forward to the steak all day.
Not much of a beer selection, 2 IPA's with one of them tapped dry at 8:30pm. Not the greatest beers either but did its job. Later switched to an overpriced Italian Merlot - definitely not worth...

We came here for Tarim's very belated Birthday and probably hyped it up in our minds. It was only my first week eating meat again so I was extra pumped.
The food was pretty good but not blown out of my mind. Honestly, my favourite part of the meal was the bread. The wine was wayyyyy overpriced. The service was super lacking - either because it was a busy night or because of our age.
I would...

Went here with a friend awhile back for lunch. It is pricey, but was it worth it? YES! We both got the 16 oz. Rib Steak that they are apparently famous for - recommended to me by the waiter. I had mine with mashed potatoes while my friend had onion rings (they are huge).
I thought the service was very good but it might have been because we went so early (there was no one there at the time) but...

Dinner
Ordered: Rib steak and salad.
Food, service,ambience: 4/5
Value:3.5/5
Repeat: not sure
notes: Extensive wine list, setting is more like a saloon/parlor.
For great steak, it just doesn't get any better, with the added bonus of one of the best wine cellars in the City. Old and a tad eclectic ambiance yes, but who cares? Go for how a steak SHOULD taste. It's Old School to an art!
Barberian's is a unique experience in dining in Toronto. The place feels about as old and stale as anywhere in the city, but if you want a trip back to the 70s its not a bad bet. The service is pretty good, if anything a little too in your face. The menu, like the decor is about as classic as it gets and likely hasn't changed in 20 years.
The steak was decent, but nothing compared to Jacob and...

Before this evening, the last time I dined at Barberian's was 25 years ago. Decided to give it a shot for my partner's birthday as he craved steak. We had made reservations a few days ahead and we were 15 minutes late due to the Green P down the street rejecting my credit card. Not a problem, we were warmly greeted and shown to a cozy table in the corner. The coat check lady is lovely and... more
Very friendly and approachable place, most of the wait staff are very kind and easy going, not stuffy at all. Started with a martini and my husband and I both had a Greek salad, for a starter it was pretty large, we could have shared. The restaurant had a variety of wines to choose from and many of them are affordable (the bottle of Rioja we ordered was $45). We both got the prime rib steak... more
The ambiance is what one would imagine for a steak house in 60's, 70's or maybe even 80's. We are talking dark interior, servers in vests with immaculate attention to detail, a wine list that goes on forever. So if one seeks those qualities I would say this place will be enjoyed by you. However things have changed even for a steak house one needs to up their game for food.
We were here in a mid...

My boyfriend took me here for our anniversary and boy, was it ever amazing!
We each had a soup to start, I had the soup of the day which happened to be a tomato soup and was delicious. He had the fresh seafood chowder which was also unbelievable. For our mains, I had the 16oz Rib Steak (roughly $50) and he had the 24oz Porter House (roughly $60) both cooked to a perfect medium-rare. Fries,...

This is the best meal we ever had, to die for! For sure! We give it 6 stars out of 5!
This place is really over-rated. It's like a pseudo-old school steakhouse in that it looks like it should be great, but the food and service don't live up to the trappings.
I ordered the chateaubriand for two which was $109 and we also had two french onion soups.
We ordered the chateaubriand medium, but it came to us medium-rare. Sent it back and they cooked the sliced pieces again on the...

One of the very best steakhouse I've been to. The atmosphere is cosy, warm and comfortable. The meat was a huge 20oz bone-in NY strip, cooked exactly how I wanted it, black & blue. The wine list is overwhelming with its 100pages. And best of all, the service from our waiter CJ, was impeccable! He was on point evey single time, gave us great recommendations around the city and even gave us a... more
If you like steaks, this is the place. They will cook it exactly the way you want your steak. Same thing with drinks, it's never water down. I love the atmosphere, very casual and the servers are professional with no attitude. It's expensive, but it's definitely worth it.
Amazing and professional service from everyone at barbarians. I was blown away. And the steaks... Phenomenal! I had a medium rare porterhouse with side mash and my girlfriend got the filet mignon. My steak was the best I've had. I'm a big steak fan, and mine was cooked perfectly. For dessert we shared the beignets. They weren't exactly what we were expecting but they were good. We thought they... more
Great steak! It is a cozy, small restaurant that serves high quality steak. It is pricey but not fancy. You are really going there to get served a good quality steak. Definitely a top choice for steak lovers! btw, the cheesecake is good too. rich and smooth texture:)
Toronto- Warm and welcoming people from start to finish. The meal was excellent with four of us having each a different steak from the 10oz sirloin to the rib eye to the prime rib. Everyone was thrilled with the meal and sides and the Apple/ice cream dessert was fabulous. Augusto and the rest of the wait staff were top notch. Not inexpensive and a wine list and wine cellar to be envied by the... more
Delicious every time. A definite place to visit while in Toronto. Although expensive it's a great treat.

Once upon a time, three lifetimes or so ago, I acted in, and eventually helped to produce, outdoor Shakespeare. It was a wonderful and loved company that lasted over a decade, and it was a huge part of my little life for four years. Once I was behind the scenes (the world wasn't ready for my silly, nasal acting chops), I was let into the Barberian...

One of the best steaks I have ever. The 24 oz rib steak medium rare is the only way to eat steak. If you are going to eat here you must book the wine cellar. The service here is top notch. They are attentive and courteous. A bit expensive but worth it
I've heard about this place a couple times and finally went to try it when a friend suggested it one day. The restaurant was in an unassuming location hidden on Elm street and I had never noticed it before. The place was fairly busy but service was prompt and decent. The ambience was old fashioned, dark, but louder than I thought. I had the filet mignon which was good on all accounts but it... more
Steak so perfectly done, atmosphere as welcoming and pleasant as can be, exceptional service... It's all like you've come home for a family dinner.
Just because they have vet doesn't mean that it's black tie... So do not think twice.

Can't say enough good things about Barberian's! Fabulous meal with impeccable service! Some of their staff have worked there for 30+ years!!!! You won't find that level of expertise anywhere else. Undoubtedly the largest wine selection - the wine menu is like a novel.. in a fabulous way of course! The Barberian's wine cellar and mezzanine is a tourist attraction in itself!

Traditional steakhouse at its finest. Cozy atmosphere. Bread, pickles and carrots are offered right away, which I really enjoyed! My dad and I shared a salad which was perfect. Outstanding. We were in town for a business meeting and I found this place on Yelp. Wasn't sure what to expect and was really really happy we chose this place to eat. The food (oysters, lobster, steak, fried brussel sprouts) and service was excellent and we even got to meet the owner on our way out. If you're in Toronto, this place is a must!!
Worst steak I have. I ordered a medium rare prime beef. But what they offered is a rare portion. Everything is very salted.
I have been coming here since I was a kid every time we visit Toronto. The steaks are without a doubt the best quality and flavour within the entire GTA area. The wine list or wine book I should say ranges from a nice light dinner wine to full bodied ranging from all qualities and prices. This is my first recommendation to all friends and family of mine visiting Toronto looking for a great... more
Very good. Cool atmosphere. Very manly old world charm. Great service. High quality steak. The sides are amazing. The Brussels sprouts are great. Highly recommend the fillet mignon. Generous sides. Jacobs will impress a date more, especially a female one. But this is a great place that offers great steak. Good hang dinner place if u really like steak
Décor
Barberian's is a time warp back into the 1950s or 1960s. The décor is very traditional steak house, wood everywhere and very traditional; I love it. The décor is part museum of Canadiana; I'd want to come in here before dinner service started and just look around at all of the unique pieces of Canadian history that they have. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the traditional feel...

Excellent dinner. I had the beef filet with asparagus and mashed potato. Being in canada I had to have HP sauce with the filet. Service was excellent. Only downside it is a little pricey.
My wife and I tried to remember when we were last at Barberians, maybe 20 years ago, but it doesn't matter since the restaurant hasn't changed a bit. However, we seem to be on a mission to find the best steak in Toronto and despite staying at the Hilton with Ruth Chris beneath, we returned to Barberians because of the glowing diner reviews.

One of the best steakhouses in the city! Dinning there is an experience in and out of itself and the food is remarkable! The atmosphere is so cozy and the dim lighting sets the perfect mood. If you want to impress someone, take him/her there!! Amazing wine selection and service is impeccable!
A must visit in Toronto. Perfectly cooked steak with great service. The waiter was able to find an obscure wine that was delicious and his recommendations were on point every step if the way. Would recommend the escargot, scallops (coquilles saint Jacques), and porter house steak.
This is the ONLY Steak House i will dine at when visiting Toronto...and it's a MUST-DO experience every time. I happened upon Barberian's by chance after filming a show at CTV. My party had a wonderful time there and the owner is a real gentleman. We really enjoyed learning about the history of the place and touring the facility. I now only use Barberian's seasoning on my steaks at home in... more
Amazing meal if you want to pay for it. Great service and food!
I thought the food was ok. You can get a steak at the keg of equal quality and not pay $45. Also $11.50 for a pint of steem whistle is extortionary. The decor is neat but dated. Go if you want to see a landmark but dont expect a lot from the food.
I must mention that my card didnt work and I only had cash enough to pay for the meal, no tip. The server was very understanding. Points to him....

Absolutely amazing food. I was disappointed that they were out of Prime Rib, but I got the rib eye steak. I asked for veggies and was not disappointed. They served the best Brussels sprouts I have ever eaten.
Food was Good.
Service was inattentive, surprising considering we went early and weren't busy.
The waiters are all older and ours seemed to have trouble remembering.
For that kind of money, I was expecting more of an experience.
Great steak! Really enjoyed my meal at this classic restaurant. First time there will definitely be back. Not the cheapest place but worth the price.
This time we enjoyed Rack of Lamb with mint jelly and Baby Back Spare Ribs with hot fruit compote. Everything prepared perfectly to our wishes and served piping hot from the kitchen. Went here on a date with my girlfriend. The food and, of course, the steak, were all as advertised. I found the inside a little odd, a little stuffy, but it was original and unique, so no complaints. The neighborhood is great for a post-dinner stroll and a fun area.
I've wanted to dine at Barberian's forever. Somehow, things never quite worked out until this year.
I went to this restaurant based on the relatively good reviews, and I was completely disappointed. In fact, I cannot say anything good about this place. The stake was terrible - bad cut, rare instead of medium, and flavorless. My wife's filet mignon was also poor, with a lot of fat in it. The soups were also fast foodish. Decor was dark and gave the feeling of dirty. The candy at the exit which... more
"""Still one of the top steakhouses in Canada. I've never been steered wrong on the menu, service is very professional. Even with recent renovations, the atmosphere remains very """"old school"""" steakhouse probably due to the lack of windows and use of tapestry."""
"""I really like this traditional steakhouse. Excellent beef, cooked to perfection. Excellent wine list at reasonable prices."""
I believe this is the most consistent steak house in the city for a high end steak experience. Old school setting and great attention to detail. The wine list is quite impressive.
Superb steaks cooked just the way you want. Make sure you fill up on the garlic breads and pickled vegetables before your salads and meals arrive so you can roll yourself out of the restaurant at the end of the meal.
"""I went there for my husband birthday. The decor was really nice, quiet and clean. The service was very good and the food came in a proper time. it is a little pricey but for special occasion it is a good place to go"""

"""I confess, a big piece of charred meat is not my favourite dish. I do like the selection of wine and, after all, that's what matters. Isn't it?"""

like everything bout it the servie and all the staff the food specially the lise of wine so many to choose frm just awesome
This was a second-chance visit and another (final) disappointment. You go to a place like this for the steaks, and they are average at best. My filet was tough and tasteless, and suffered from the antiquated bacon wrap.
Warm atmosphere, Fantastic food, wonderful service, unbeatable winelist..I can't say enough about this restaurant. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a memorable evening.
We have been coming here when the present owner/manager,Aaron, was still working on the floor. (The owners "kid" - sorry Aaron)The food is fantastic, the wine list is so large that it takes a long time to decide; but, eventually you will always pick a winner. This is your classic steakhouse. Dark, clubby and pricey. We were in the mood for steak, expecting unimaginative but well executed old standards - and thats exactly what we got. I recently went to this restaurant with a party of 10 for a birthday dinner. The food for half of the party was not made as ordered, the ribs were overdone and dry, and the waiter screwed up a few of the couple’s bills. This place was very overpriced. Average steaks, mediocre service and drab decor. Our steaks were not properly cooked. For example, I had to send back my supposedly medium-rare steak as it was much closer to rare. The wine list, while impressive in size, lacks value and contains very few selections under $100 (and even those are subject to a significant mark-up). A very disappointing experience overall.
This place has fantasic food and great service. The owners are very nice and the steak I had was by far the best I've had in Canada (and even the US). It was a very enjoyable and memorable experiance. My only regret was that I didn't see a celebrity, like many others do when they go.
Disappointing. While the french onion soup was very tasty, my steak was only average. Based on the Zagat's review and this place's reputation, I expected better. Not a bad dinner by any means, but certainly not worthy of a second trip given all the other high-end steakhouses that exist.
My massive t-bone was average. Nice flavour but not particularly tender. My wife could barely chew through the shoe leather she was served. She likes her steak well done but not vulcanized. The rest of the food was very good and the wine list is incredible. The service was great and we enjoyed the unique decor. At the end of the day though, this place is supposed to be about steak.... more
we come to Tornto from NYC every few months for work. We have many great steak houses in the city, but non come close to matching the service food and valule of Barberian's. The Host Mr Barberian treats us like the many stars we often see dining in his fine establisment. Keep up the good work
The new part of the building is rather untasteful; however, BEST STEAK I EVER HAD!!!!! Definately worth a try if you love steak, and good sevice, atmosphere, sevice, andvalue.
Still firing on all cylinders 30 years after my first visit!!! The beef is tender and flavorful. I love this place. The staff cant be beat. A Plus plus
Barberian's Steak House is by far the best.
I have been to several countries, all of the US, and only one steak house
came close to Barberian's, it was Ruths Chris in Maui. Suffice
to say, Barberian's is a 5 star steak house. Try it, see for yourself.
Expensive but tender steaks with good selections of appetizers and sides. Dessert list humdrum, hasn't changed in years. Amazing, pricy wine cellar. Canadian art, some famous, on walls of ramshackle old house with a number of rooms and nooks and crannies. Great foundue and Grand Marnier souffle on late-night menu. Professional waiters. Open late. Fun place to take out of towners.
This is more of an upscale place with great food but you can get away with casual clothes...the service is great and the location down town is convenient to walk to
There aren't many places that get IT anymore but, this is definitely one of them. There's solid wines, perfectly aged and cooked steaks, monster shrimp cocktails (with the hottest cocktail sauce, I've ever had) and martinis that aren't light on the pour (a rare Toronto find). There is, however, no multi-million dollar renovations and no giant winged back chairs. The servers don't feel the need... more
Had a great rib steak & a vintage bottle of hermitage what could be finer!!! The service was as great as any we've ever had. Thanks
Incredible wine list, with well prepared steaks. Tired decor but woth it for the wine.
They do know steak at this place, but for the price you would certainly hope so. Hopelessly antiquated interiors and beyond exorbitant prices leave your wallet empty, even if your stomach is full. Lengthy wine list contains many wines you won't find in Toronto, albeit at ridiculous markups.
Outstanding for steak...but the tables are very close together and cramped.
Good steaks, but seriously old-school. Average age of customers is about 72
One of Toronto's oldest steak houses. Traditions are kept up here and they have a fine wine cellar.
Old hat at this stage surviving on a name, tourists and people who know no better
Old style Steakhouse. Bar small and too close to the door. You are there only for the food. Decor could do with a fire!! But best shrimp and place to see the stars.
Great steaks, but the vast, famous wine-list is sickeningly over-priced!
Good old fashioned steakhouse feel with tender flavorful steaks.
Typical old style steakhouse. There are lots of these to choose from. Standard fare. Good value. Ok if one feels like a "hunk of meat" and I do that a lot.
Atmosphere is a little dingy, as if the place hasn't been dusted in 20 years. The crowd, not so interesting. But the steaks are definitely up to par.
A steakhouse as you would think of it in your dreams. The meat is fantastic, the service professional and very freindly and the winelist has the size of a telephone book. The decor is suitable for a meat lovers place and due to it's rather small size the whole place is very cozy. I'll never miss to visit barberian's when I'm in town.
Perfect meat. Old style service. Great to impress someone with service and great quality food, carefully and simply prepared
Although the atmosphere was a little loud, you'll love the experience, the service and most of all the food! Start with drinks in the bar ... small dark and cozy. Have a martini and drink it slow. Enjoy the best oysters and steak in town.
Don't go here if you expect a trendy restaurant. The decor is straight out of the 1960s, swirly carpet and everything. The food is no nonsense cow, prepared to perfection. The waiters know what they're talking about, the wine list is impeccable. Sadly, this restaurant is one of a dying breed, catch it while it is still around.

I loved it the best of any steak house in town, Know what I mean. Juicy succulent red meat after a night on the town is a real tonic. Keep on truckin' Barbarians!
My favourite restaurant. Have been coming here for 16 years from the U.S. regularly. Wouldn't go anywhwere else. Fabulous service and food. Wonderful atmosphere. They treat you like family!
Possibly the best Steak I have ever had!
Another class act in a city teeming with resturants. Luckily we had a native who knew the good places and this is his favorite. I was impressed and pleased.
his is my favorite in TO I love this place!!!!
I you are looking for a good priced steak and great atmosphere then this is the place. The deserts are a must. The wine list is quite extensive and is always changing. Close to downtown or the theatre district.
Having one of the best creme brule's I've ever had, this restaurant personifies everything a restaurant must in order to be called excellent, except the service was not excellent while I was there. Perhaps next time they will impress me to the oint that I get to knock another star up there, but for right now **** is all it gets.
One of the finest dining experiences I've ever had. Superb Service. Incredible food! Located just behind the Delta Chelsea hotel. Reservations suggested.
This place is awesome. Set in an older section of the business district in a nice old white building, the atmosphere is rustic and warm. Great steakhouse! I disagree with my travelguide. I had a great meal there. Will dine there again next time in Toronto. JNJ.
Very good food. The porterhouse was slightly overcooked than the medium-rare I requested, however the steak was tender. You can excuse Barberian's for having a slightly dated atmosphere. The restaurant opened in 1959 and some of the patrons have a long standing history, equating Barberian's with celebration for more than 50 years, which certainly bodes well.
