Since 1963…
Granted I wasn’t even born then, but pretty amazing to realize just how long this business has been around. I’d love to see images from its early days (probably in a different location) and visualize in my mind of how it was probably one of the early (and few) restaurants offering Japanese cuisine in this city during the sixties, but that is now filled with so many of them (the...

This is *not* one of those churn-and-burn type of places. You will not get your sushi extra fast or extra cheap. What you will receive here is professional service, and some unique menu items you may not typically find anywhere else. Being in business in Vancouver since 1963 also says a lot.
We were a party of four, with two...

I have been to Aki twice now, once for dinner with my wife and grandkids and once for lunch with a friend. Food and service on both occasions were excellent. My grandkids have some food allergies (food needs to be gluten free) and the restaurant had no problems in ensuring that everything we ordered was edible for them. I believe... more
I went to Aki Restaurant based on a suggestion from the Concierge at the Sutton Place Hotel. Figuring that she would not lead me astray, I took my brother for dinner. Walking in, the room is nothing spectacular, it looks like it used to be a lounge of some sort and they turned it into a Japanese restaurant. There was... more

After being a regular at their old location on Thurlow, I missed a goooood sushi and finally made it to their new location last week. It took about 15 minutes to realize what I was really missing! Everything was as good as always. By far still the best sushi guys in town. Good to be back and see you soon... more
I have gone to the location on Thurlow for many years but only gone to the new location on Pender once recently. I am a little disappointed. I've been going to Aki when it was in Japan town. I liked their second location on Thurlow much better, but the food makes up for it.Their lunch sets are a bargain, my favorite is the black cod set. Dinner offerings include
BBQ goeduck and conch and fresh sashimi such as aji and spot prawns.
This is one of the very last few Japanese restaurants in Vancouver that serve authentic traditional Japanese dishes from the kitchen. Very professional and experienced Japanese chefs, fresh foods, friendly servers, comfortable environment, reasonable prices, great selections on the menu ... what more can I say? Make sure to make reservation, even on a week day.
Good sushi, very good sashimi. Not as delicately cut as some places but didn't take away from the flavours at Good service, good house saki. Service was excellent and efficient.
Ha, I'm the duke of Aki!
I haven't gone there since Corey Hirsh was a Canuck. Or was that Glen Hanlon? Or since Corey Hart was popular.
About a month ago or two I went to the new(ish) location in Coal Harbor. I've been back a lot I imagine, because I'm the duke. I remember their location on Powell, then the one in the basement of that parking lot on Alberni. (The one that had Karoake next...

I'm writing this halfway through my meal, which is lovely, but the service is not so amazing. Our server is sweet; but I've had my food for 15 minutes and several member of my table have not yet been served, which is awkward. I'll be finished before they get served.
Update: the two dishes we were missing (now 35 minutes after I received my food) have been delivered, but they're cold. The hot...

I had heard that Vancouver had great Sushi and after walking around in rain for about 30 minutes, I stumbled onto this place. Watch out for the wasabi though as I used WAY too much and felt the effects of it bringing... more
This place has been around my corner for a couple of years now but for some reason I hadn't ventured out to it as with the overwhelming number of choices for sushi on Robson I tend to navigate south as opposed to north when the craving calls for it.

I heard nothing but amazing things about this restaurant and to be really honest, it was quite a disappointing experience. I ordered: Seaweed Salad, Gyoza, Short Rib and Kappa Maki. Things got weird after that...we ordered the Deep Fried Oysters and what was served was... more
Aki is a small Japanese restaurang in downtown Vancouver. They make great sushi and restaurang feels really cosy. Service is fast and friendly.
Some of you may find this review a bit long, sorry, but I felt this is a minimum to honour a great innovator: Aki Takeuchi.

I take anyone who visits me over to this restaurant, since it never disappoints. My favourite is the Black Cod, but last time I got the Nabeyaki udon noodle soup, and loved it. Always the best ingredients, and the prices are reasonable!
I had a sushi platter for $11.95 as part of the Aki lunch special. This is a large restaurant with a bar area and the staff were very attentive and polite. The fish was fresh and it was truly a delightful lunch.
NOTE: the restaurant is now on 1368 West Pender St, Vancouver
A reliable place for lunch. They have a great variety to suit all tastes. Box A is everyone's favourite; i have to force myself to try other things, and i'm never disappointed.
Other great things to try: chicken teriaki, butter salmon, and my personal favourite...beef and tofu. Don't forget to spoon some of the brothy sauce onto the bowl of rice.

'Meh. I've experienced better'. --- that's what Yelp gives as the description as a two star rating. I feel bad giving this place only two stars, but that was exactly my feeling when we walked out.

The people who come to Aki and only eat sushi (and subsequently write reviews only about the sushi) are missing out on what makes Aki unique. Highly recommend this place, great alternative to the long lines on Denman.
I returned to Aki restaurant tonight and had a chirashi sushi once again. It was excellent once again. Sushi chiefs gave me a soy source braised black cod for free. It was also great. I keep my review as it is. Aki is the best Japanese restaurant in town from my (or Japanese) point of view.
Aki Japanese Restaurant was one of my favorites on Thurlow and Alberni in Vancouver Downtown. For one I felt it offered more traditional flare and cuisine authenticity. Food (sushi and maki) was very good (but not great) and not expensive for the quality. Service was friendly but with not refinement. Wine is sold at a reasonable price. Decor is simple but with the grill in the middle of the place, the ambiance is fun. Hard to find from the street!?!

At this price point, I can't think of a single japanese place in Vancouver that compares, so 5 stars it is. Our group went for lunch today and had Black Cod, Salmon Shiyoyaki, Curry Katsu, and the Sashimi/Karaage/Short Rib set. Everything was fantastic.
