I came here with my wife, cousin and friends and we enjoyed it very much. It has very good food, great service and a nice ambience. We recommend it.
This is one time I wish I could give zero "dots" because our most recent experience did not even deserve one dot!
We arrived early for dinner and there were only a few other tables occupied. Our waiter seemed more interested in shining the glassware than in waiting on customers. He finally took our order and brought our salad within...

Ambiance is nice. Service is good. Price is alright. We had Filet Mignon with shrimps and scallops. The meat was very tender, one of my best steaks. Might have to make a reservation, since it is quite busy.
Stopped in for an early dinner on a Monday evening. I wish we hadn't. The veal Marsala was tough and the sauce jelly-like and tasteless. The risotto with shrimp was garlicky but otherwise tasteless. The location is nice and the place busy...but I do not know why. I won't go back. Yuck.
Recommended by our B & B, and we were very pleased. Good food, service, atmosphere, and price. Like the BYOB policy with no corkage charge. I had the scallops - nicely presented and seasoned.
There is nothing special. Definitively an ordinary Italian restaurant. The foods and prices are "just" correct. You can bring your wine and perhaps a good place for a group of friends.
On a cold night in Montreal, we were looking for a reasonably priced option in the Plateau section of the city. Our guide book had given this place a positive review, so we gave it a try. We purchased a bottle of wine at the well-stocked store across the street, and we were seated in this relatively small local restaurant.... more
We were a group of 12, heading for a show at Place des Arts, so there was a time constraint, which we mentioned to the waiter. The service was prompt and attentive, the food was to everyone's liking, I had a seared yellow fin tuna done to perfect and a very large portion to boot!. We all got out in... more
Nice looking restaurant but the food is only okay in my opinion... would not go out of my way to go to this restaurant. Service was good though.
Le restaurant est joli, mais la cuisine est seulement acceptable à mon avis.
Ok I would probably give this a 1 star based on food alone. They used to have an amazing gnocci but now have removed it from the menu (why???) so I got the fettuccine alfredo which was....... not good. honestly felt sick after eating it. Just not flavourful at all. So food is not so good, but where this place makes up for it is the experience, when you go with friends with one bottle of wine... more
I have gone to both the St Johns, and St Denis locations. I am never disappointed. I love to go on Wednesday for their great deals on pasta and mussles, coupled with bringing our own wine means date night can be extremely affordable. I also go there for our yearly staff dinner, normally a group of 20-30 waiters and waitresses... more
I was 2 years ago that I had been here. The lasagna was so yummy that I cannot forget.
We had a reservation for 30 persons, but unfortunately only 8 showed up. The manager came to us and yelled at us for being only 8! Love this place. Great food. Good prices.
It is our go-to place.
And "apportez votre vin".
The food was very average, nothing really stood out for me! Also kind of overpriced.
The interior is very pretty though! Great location on the cute little Crescent street.
Food was good but I will never say this was the best Italian of French food I had in my life. Go to the Crescent location instead of the St-Denis one. More space for the customers on Crescent and staff was friendlier (we tried both places). We went there as we had a 100$ voucher we received as a Christmas... more
Great restaurants. The best European restaurants in Montreal on Crescent! Food is always good and fresh. Staff is friendly.
We went to l`academie last Friday.
Middle of the road food, I had a steak and it was medium well when I had asked for medium rare. they offered to change it but I declined.
they offered a free desert.
My spouse had past which was good.
this restaurant is one 3 floor but it is noisy.
great staff.
I'm not a big fan of l'academie in general. I've been to one in the south shore and it was awful. When I went to the one on st.denis I was very skeptical. This time it wasn't terrible but it wasn't great! I'm glad they had a special because or else I think their food is over priced for what... more
Good food but arrived at table not properly hot so a disappointment, we were guests of a friend so did not say anything but would have done if not being paid for.
They have English and French menus, you can bring your own wine in.
Very busy and seemed to be so all night
L'academie is well..... L'academie. You don't go there for the fantastic food (let's be honest, it's not all that great) or the service (it took our waitress 3 tries to get our bill right which in the end was still wrong). But you go there for the cheap dishes and BYOW.
L'Academie offers good food at reasonable prices and is located right in the heart of the Plateau district of Montreal. I had a pasta dish which was fine, nothing to rave about, but a good meal just the same. Outdoor seating was available on the street and there's great street corner ambiance to be had. One feature I liked is... more

The goal of that chain is to provide better than average food at a decent price and they deliver. Food is always nice, tasty and fresh, service is fast and very efficient. great little cafe/rest for a quick lunch or dinner. They do a 10 dollar quick lunch with soup, a main and coffee - very good value for money and perfect for a little break before venturing further into the busy streets.
I was expecting a lot more because of the amazing reviews I heard. However, I was left a bit disappointed. My pasta was.. sweet? My partner didn't care for if either. On the other hand, the service was impeccable and the price affordable.
My experience at l'Academie was great. It was pretty busy for a Tuesday night, lively but not overly loud. The service was prompt and unobtrusive. I had the duck, which was very delicious!
It saddens me that this place has such subpar reviews. This was the first restaurant my friends and I landed in after getting sadly rejected by another restaurant down the street. We had just driven for a few hours and just wanted to eat. First of all, this place is three stories. Holy c@!p. But not only is it three stories, the service was SPECTACULAR for us. We ordered the food and it came... more
Discounted gourmet food from culinary students in a city like Montreal? Yes please. Make sure you get the mussels. They are the best I have ever had
The atmosphere is exactly what you're looking up when you're going to a preplanned visit to a restaurant
This restaurant exceeded my expectations. The service was warm and efficient, and the tables covered with white tablecloths. The menu (offered in French and English versions) offered fresh mussels prepared, in your choice of about 12 ways, pasta in a variety of preparations, salads, delectable desserts, and excellent coffee. It is a BYOB place, with a liquor store nearby. The... more
You ate in what felt like a gym - crowded and noisy.
The seafood pasta wasn't anything great and really expensive for just a large portion of noodles, sauce and some over cooked squid. I was turned off by the service that made you feel like a number. Never went back.
I really enjoyed our trip to L'academie. We all ordered the house special-a main entree with a soup or salad. I had chicken stuffed with prosciutto and ricotta. Delicious! Two people at the table had a fish dish which they enjoyed and the last had linguine with mussels and shrimp, another hit.
Unfortunately we came on a night when a...

Montreal is known for its unique" bring your own wine" restaurants. What started as a liquor license loophole turned into a restaurant category over the past 25 years. If a restaurant did not have a liquor license patrons could bring their own and the establishment charged a corkage fee. Originally this was limited to a few Greek style entrepreneurs who... more
Normally this place was OK. But we went there recently and the service and food were both Disgusting.
Our server was an Asian guy who told us the calamari was only "pretty good" but better than the muscles.
That was the vibe to start our night: a server who didn't even like the food. So we ordered with that great attitude as our starting point.
We got snails, calamari, and the cannelloni.

100 characters is just to many when you do not have much to say. I was disappointed, food was cold and was not impressed at all.
I don't understand why so many people wait in line to go eat there.
The cuisine is correct but you'll find better elsewhere.
It's probably a good place to go for a large group since they can accomodate big tables
It's main quality is that it is very well situated. The food is so-so, the service so-so. There are so many other interesting restos in Montreal with better quality for the price.
Though the food is fairly cheap for a downtown restaurant, the three times I went to L'Academie I had a mistake made in on of our orders or food arrived in a wrong sequence (entrees after main course) and/or tepid.
Food quality is barely above average and not very impressive for a downtown restaurant, especially considering that there are plenty...

expensive for what you get.no taste and portion really small.went with a group of 6 --none liked the food..I would eat elsewhere next time or hire real chefs.
well located, they offer a daily menu at lunch and it is not expensive. One could bring its own wine if they want to have a sip of wine. Service is kind. Settings is interesting as well.
The food was salted so heavily that it was impossible to taste. The staff were attentive but when told of the chef's heavy hand with the salt simply pointed to the large number in the restaurant and said "noone else seems to care" perhaps their wine covered over the problem?
It's a BYOW, although food is overpriced for it's quality. I usually love crowed place but here, it's way too much. But the service is good.
Food was ok, but somewhat basic. Not up to Montreal's standards of dining. Overpriced for the almost franchise type of eating.Seems like food is cooked from frozen as opposed to fresh.
I had dinner with a friend at L'academie last summer. It was full - good thing we had a reservation. Food was nice especially for the price. Service was so so
I have eaten at this restaurant on two different occasions.
The service level and meals were good both times. Not an expectional restaurant
The mussels are super good! Since it's a BYOB you can bring the wine that you really like! The duck was good too, but the mussels are a must!
We went here on a Saturday for a friend's birthday supper. She had made reservations 2-3 weeks in advance for a group of 25 for 9pm. She was given a long speech about having everyone there on time otherwise her reservation would be given away. All 25 of us showed up by 8:50, but the hostess refused to seat us and she made a big stink about us blocking the entrance way (which, mind you, is... more
The food is not bad. It's fairly cheap too. But, I dunno, it's not great either. The atmosphere is alright. It's a place you can go for a decent meal at a decent price.
Not a bad BYOB. We ended up there on a busy Saturday night, but we were seated within five minutes for a group of ten. Service was slow at parts. The bread was good though (fresh and still warm). I ordered a Filet mignon, and it was delicious (nice and tender with great flavors). Pricing is a little high for small portions though (I would have expected slightly more sides with the beef.... more
This is just a neat restaurant all the way around. It is also a bring your own wine place so you don't have to pay for overpriced wine. The service was by an excellent young man who just knew how to be cool but not cocky. Loved the place on a really neat busy corner with lots of glass to... more
Firstly, this is not haute cuisine, but quite a nice restaurant for a group of friends. Good lively location on trendy St-Denis, and a SAQ outlet nearby.
Service was excellent and the mussels large and delicious. Everyone else was happy with their choices.
Nice set up and good meal for the price. The laval branch is very good specially for promotion from Sunday to Wednesday for pasta and mussel.
The food is OK, not amazing, but they have a good lunch deal and I love any place that's BYOB. The St. Denis location is conveniently located near an SAQ so you can stop in there and pick up a bottle or two and then go eat some mussels and pasta.
First, this is our favorite BYOB restaurant. It is so convenient with the SAQ is right across the street.

We visited several Academie restaurants (in Montreal and Laval) in the past few years. Our impression was always the same: trendy chain of restaurants where you go to be seen but definitly not to eat.
The restaurant let you bring your own wine and offered very delicious mussels and pasta. The service was awesome. We enjoyed so much that we spent 2 nights in a row in our 3-day stay in Montreal.
Ended up here after Tasso's was closed(Sunday). Fantastic ambiance- three stories high with a great patio and open window concept. Bring your won wine and no corkage fee makes this a plus as wel (SAQ right across the street is very convinient.)l. The food was decent but the experience was great. Really romantic and the window view gives you a great setting. . Definitely worth going to if you're... more
This was the 2nd time at this nice bring your own bottle place. There is a provincial liquor store across the street and we chose a Mouton Rothchild white and a 2004 Chateau Labegorce Margaux red.
To start, we had escargot, fried calamari and mussels. Soup du jour was a veggie puree. Two had beef and I chose duck. Red meat was tender but breast was a bit tough.
Nice-looking yet cheap restaurant. Pastas are great, even if you have to wait for a bit to enter. Discovered only afterward that my (delicious) lasagna was part of the special, so got it for only $13!
Was too hot to go home on Monday and looked for place with air, decent food and prices. We were extremely surprised by this popular Italian BYO. Very noisy and crowded, but if that doesn't bother you, great place for the... more
I suppose it's a good place if you like bringing your own booze, otherwise they pressure you to order lots of food and the food is not really the showcase. I had the pasta and the price was right, but there are just better options.
Solid 3 stars right down the middle. They never accomplished a top performance. But they are consistently good enough.
For the money and considering its a bring your own wine, L'Academie gets a C grade! Why eat at home when you can go out for a minimal cost?
Food is decent. Service is so-so. It is a so-called fast / semi fine dining. What can you expect from a bring-your-own-wine place?
The quintessential French restaurant. If you want to give an out-of-towner a speedy does of French-style cuisine, you can't go wrong with L'Academie. It skirts the line between a high-quality bistro and a cheap BYOW restaurant; just a few blocks from Prince Arthur and ten times the quality of any of the tourist traps there.
I have never had to wait long to seat a modestly-sized party; the...

I am so surprised at all the negative reviews. This is a place we have been known to queue up in the snow to eat at. It is always on our itinerary when we visit Montreal. Pros:

Went here with my co-workers. Excellent food. We bought wine across the street at the SAQ and took it to dinner. No corkage fees, must be a Montreal thing. I've been twice now and have had consistently good meals of mussels and duck.
We were a big party of 15 and were seated at two tables on the third floor on a Friday night. The decor is nice with rustic exposed brick walls and large windows overlooking a busy street. It's a very big restaurant with vibrant atmosphere.

Oh, how I miss you, L'acadamie! I love your mussels and the BYOB option, and I've shared some good meals with good friends at your tables. The wait, however, is killer... although usually quite worth it.
A for sure thing! I always bring visitors to L'Academie because the menu is varied (the best are the mussels though!), it's pretty cheap, and the brIng your own wine option makes it that much better!
This place is great. I used to go there everytime I had friends visiting Montreal. This restaurant is loud and very busy, which is great for impressing them :).The food is very good. I think it is relatively cheap for what you get.
Good place. BYOB. Pricey food. Awesome atmosphere.I think essentially it provided a great backdrop for the bachelorette dinner I attended, not so much for the food but for the zen and modern decorations. And also the bring your own wine thing... Helps with an SAQ next door. The experience was fun but mainly because of my group, not so much the restaurant itself.
Best place we dined in while inontreal. Also a good people watcher place. Good service and fine food. Definitely the place to see and be seen. Uber urbane
I'm rating this on behalf of my friends and I, because a lot of what they ordered during our latest visit helped with the overall rating.BYOB/AVV is the popular thing to do, and it's convenient that there's a nearby store to pick up a bottle. I spent one long afternoon for lunch here. The place was empy and airy, bright considering it was grey and wet outside. Such a pleasant place to sit and watch Montreal stroll easily in the rain. Charming place, great menu, nice to BYOW. The escargots are a favorite starter, and their main courses are prepared with care and always delicious. And the prices are surprisingly reasonable, even with the crummy exchange rates for USD. I try to go for dinner here at least once when I am in Montreal.
This restaurant gets pretty decent ratings from me for its ability to accommodate so many patrons, very decent food and providing all this for reasonable pricing.Despite the restaurant itself having a pretty modern and hip decor where they could easily follow other restaurants in the trend of charging higher for style instead of substance, they have had enough restraint to keep the prices... more
Great spot because prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly, it's big so you're likely to get a seat, you can people-watch like crazy (inside or outside through the big windows), and there are lots of food choices. A great apportez-votre-vin pre-going out dinner spot. The food can be hit or miss. The moule are usually my option of choice. Try to arrive early, as they don't take reservations. With a large group, you can spend a long time hanging around, drinking your own wines and get the bill just in time for the clubs down the street to open up. Classic french cuisine at cheaper than expected prices.
Bring your own wine and hang out in a trendy location in the plateau! The veal scallopini is good. as well as the lobster bisque! The lines are long but if you go on a nice summer evening it's not such a bother as it's a busy fun street with lots to look at! Good for the younger crowd who don't mind hanging around waiting.
This was a late dinner and I didn't order an appetizer since I wasn't that hungry. There was no soup or salad with the meal. But, the serving size was large and the veal was tender. I would have liked more vegetables, but the service was good. Not much more to add. It was a quick fix for a late night hunger!
I finally got around to eating at L'Académie this Friday. The restaurant gives off this air of Zen grandeur and European opulence at the same time while serving a fusion of Italian and French fusion cuisine. I second most of the other reviews- great, affordable food (especially the mussels au poivre with frites), comfortable modern atmosphere.
