"Book in advance" at this "quirky little" Little Italy hangout where a "half-meat, half-vegetarian menu" draws trendy twenty- and thirtysomethings who feast on "delicious" Canadian plates spotlighting "fabulously fresh ingredients"; the "unconventional" "urban-lumberjack-chic" room can get "noisy" and it's not cheap, but "engaging servers" help keep most happy, so "reservations are a must."

Woodlot is a charming Canadian-inspired restaurant and bakery on Palmerston on the eastern edge of Little Italy that's gotten quite a bit of buzz since it opened in 2010. The name is a no-brainer — greeting you from the street is a woodshed and chopping block, no doubt to feed the beast that is their beautiful wood burning oven, where most of the kitchen's creations get their heat treatment.... more

Chef David Haman has a lot of guts. With wood-fired pizzas all the rage in the big smoke, the former Lucien staffer built a wood-burning oven from scratch with no intention of taking on Libretto for the city's best pie. Instead, his carte focusses on what can best be described as Canadian comfort food: the generously-sized venison pie, rustic cabbage rolls stuffed with braised duck, and a... more

Great food, nice atmosphere
August 10, 2014

We ate dinner here with friends I hadn't seen in 15 years and had a great night. They recommended the place, and we're glad they did.
Nice casual atmosphere, great service. Great cocktails, though I don't see the awesome tequila one on their current list.
The Hen-o-the-woods Mushroom starter is outstanding, as was the burrata and heirloom tomato salad.

Average food, disappointing service
July 27, 2014

Based on other reviews, I had great expectations about Woodlot.
The venue is cute, however it seems they tried to fit more tables than the space should have resulting a crowded restaurant upstairs.
The staff was friendly but it was really disappointing be waiting for the main dishes for more than one hour after receiving the appetizers. My dish was... more

We have been dying to try this place ever since the reviews in EnRoute and other Toronto magazines. Now we know why it was virtually impossible to get a last minute reservation in the past. We saw people showing without reservations at the door. One big table on main floor with a whimsical snail sculpture and smaller tables on the second.... more

Woodlot is a gourmet restaurant that really focuses on the quality of the food served, with most of their offerings being fresh and handmade. A variety of breads such as cinnamon raisin, multigrain, rye and sourdough are baked here, in addition to having an a la carte menu that consists of caramelized onion soup, oysters, rainbow trout, iron steak, polenta fries. Vegetarians have plenty to... more

Woodlot features seasonal menus based on “creative Canadian comfort food,” and their hand-built wood-fired oven is where all the magic happens. You’ll find hardy, delicious dishes at this cozy restaurant—and the freshly basked bread is not to be missed!
