“Easy call 5 Star”

The Ridge At Manitou Golf Club
One of the top courses I have ever played. Spectacular scenery in the heart of the Canadian shield. The undulating fairways were in pristine shape. The slope ratings are high and the greens can be treacherous. The layout is kind to the average golfer with large landing areas but seldom are the greens on the same plane. The holes really play individually and we saw other groups only occasionally. The next closest group was almost two holes behind my foursome and it seemed as if we had the entire course to ourselves. The cart is included in the price and is the only way to navigate this course. The driving range is isolated with all the balls you will need to warm up.

This course was private until this year and it runs like clockwork with all the appointments. Staff members are vigilant and helpful. The clubhouse is a beautiful rustic log house that fits in wonderfully with the terrain. The patio overlooks the lake and some golfers arrive by boat. On a sunny day the views are spectacular. The best golfing experience I have ever had.

“Very good shape early season”

Anderson Links
Played this course in early June. While many of the other local area courses were experiencing spotty greens there were no such problems at Andersons. In fact the greens were quite fast and true. They are multitiered and the pin placements were very challenging. The fairways were also in good order and it made for a great day.

The driving range is just off the highway but I did not try it. The Club house is under construction and looks like it will be spacious and well designed. In the meantime the facilities consist of trailers - no great appeal.

“A Great Find”

Taste of Japan Inc
My first visit came following a recommendation from a friend. It was a recommendation which I would heartily second. The exterior is unassuming and easy to miss. The interior is tastefully decorated. The service was exemplary, our waitress both knowedgable and cheerful. There were a number of speciality selections available which were not on the menu. This added to the unique experience which included first time tastings of soft shell crab and sea urchin (I was counselled that this item was not to everyone's taste but was quite satisfied with the experience). In addition we were fortunate to be on hand when the stock included some imported libations beyond what the menu offered. All in all a wonderful experience.

“Great Tapas”

Don Alfonso Restaurant
The environment is excellent. Depending on the day and time you can have a quiet private meal or a communal feast with much socializing and live musical entertainment. The staff is excellent and knowledgable. The choices and flavours are varied. To make the most of your meal, especially if with a large group, I recommend combining some of the many tapas dishes. Exquisite.

“Delivery Treat”

Indian Clay Oven
My first order from this restaurant was quite satisfying. The price was reasonable, the delivery time quick. The beef korma was excellent and the chicken bhuna rates almost as high. I regret not trying one of the specialty rices but will do so next time. The only negative aspect was that some of the roti were charred. All in all a very good first impression.

“Slow”

73 North Restaurant Lounge
Both drink and food service is slow even when not busy. Food is so so. Breakfasts are acceptable.

“Should be better”

D'ARCY MCGEE'S Irish Pub
The menu is more varied than most pubs and the food quality is above average. I recommend the lamb shank with garlic mashed potatoes. The seasonal menu additions and specialty beers are a plus. There is an excellent selection of draft beer. The location is ideal for anyone working near or visiting Parliament. The seating can accommodate larger parties but it is best to call ahead. Avoid being seated at the bottom of the stairs during the winter unless you enjoy dining with your coat on. The patio is extremely popular in the summer.

On the downside this is an extremely popular spot. The long term staff members provide good service but the newer members (seems to be a lot of turnover) do not always keep up and during the busiest times. Friday's after work, you may have trouble moving because of the bar crowd. My last such visit my group decided to leave after finishing our meal and waiting 15 minutes to order drinks. We received the wrong bill twice over the next twenty minutes before having to go to the front desk and asking for the proper bill. That, combined with the poor managerial response to inadvertently cancelling our reservation for a group of 14 (offering three seats at the bar) make it difficult not to give a poor rating. However, if you go at the right time you may be rewarded with an enjoyable meal.

“Comfort food with friendly service”

Amber Garden
A great selection of eastern European dishes, beer and liquor. The owners are very helpful with suggestions for those unfamiliar with the choices. In my large group, the meal started off with the restaurant made perogies, which were devoured by all and were the best I have eaten. The schnitzel with potato pancake was a huge hit. My selection from the game menu (wild boar) did not disappoint and the vegetarians at the table were accommodated to their satisfaction.

Service was excellent especially when it came to choosing an aperitif, beer or digestif. The restaurant is small to medium sized but we were allowed to dine at our leisure and relax after our meal. All but the biggest eaters at our table left with part of their dinner to go. A wonderful night out.

“Individualized Meals”

The Mongolian Village
The one area that stands out about this restaurant is the personal selection of the ingredients in your meal. The meal starts with soup and the main is a stir fry made up of ingredients which you pick from a salad bar style area starting with vegetables and noodles and moving on to a variety of seafood and meats. Finally the diner chooses any combination of a dozen cooking sauces. Payment is by weight with the costs ranging from $13 to $25. A good time was had by all and everyone had left-overs to go.

“Great place for groups”

The Prescott
An old-style tavern. Cheap but hearty food. This restaurant is renowned for its meatball sub and square pizzas. This is a good choice for the university crowd looking for an inexpensive night out or the business group looking for a quick lunch.

“Pub and trivia”

New Edinburgh Pub
This is a typical pub with a relatively small bar area and somewhat larger dining area that can accommodate medium sized groups. It also has a roof-top patio in the summer. The NTN trivia is a draw for the after work crowd and is popular for some prime time slots.

Staff members are friendly and quick to recall preferences if you are a repeat customer. The food is of the usual tavern style with the Tandoori wings standing out. A nice variety of beer is on hand both in draft and bottle. Prices are quite reasonable.

“Great Chopped Liver”

Dunns Deli
Didn't have the same experience as some of the other internet reviews. Ample portions. Timely service even during high volume times. The chopped liver is awesome. Good value.

“Wonderful experience”

El Meson Restaurant
Some of the best Spanish fare in the city. The seafood is mouthwatering and the service was top-notch. Our waiter was new to the restaurant but was clearly experienced and absolutely on top of both the food and wine menus. Without intruding the owner also offered assistance and even offered a complimentary after dinner drink. Before leaving I had to thank both and promised I would be back. This is a promise I plan to keep!

“Phenomenal”

Brooktstreet Hotel Corp
Excellent, knowledgeable yet unobtrusive service. Great wine list. Relaxing ambiance. How can it get any better? With the first bite! Advertising about the award winning chef is no hollow boast. Every course is a wonderful treat. You owe it to yourself to try the cuisine.
If you want to sample the fare at a reduced cost, you might want to try the table d'hote or the Sunday buffet.

For those having friends stay from out of town, the restaurant is found in the Brookstreet Hotel, which also offers great quality and top notch golf deals. Just can't say enough about this restaurant.

“It's all about the pizza”

Willy's Pizza
This pizzeria offers other food as well but the pizza stands out. This is a take out or delivery only restaurant. There is no "30 minutes or free deal" but they have always met their quoted delivery time.

I noted another web comment in which the reviewer detailed a very poor experience with their experience upon ordering. While I would not call the telephone personnel ebullient, I have always received professional service.

“Good time had by all”

Duck Restaurant At the Lodge
The menu is not the most expansive but is nonetheless varied enough to accommodate a range of tastes. In addition the chef has clearly mastered what is advertised. On the occasion of my last visit, the surrounding tables consisted of a young family with children, a more elderly couple and a party of former university classmates. At the end of their meals I overheard compliments and praise from each table, sentiments that are the best form of advertising and which I wholeheartedly share. Plus the view of the lake is quite nice.

“Exquisite”

Empire Grill
My first visit was with a group of nine out of town visitors who universally loved the food and atmosphere. They were so impressed with the service that they conveyed their appreciation to the manager before leaving.

For my part, I thoroughly enjoyed the beef, bison and elk carpaccio and the perfectly cooked rib eye steak. This is a top notch steak house and the pricing reflects this. Highly recomended.

“Excellent Service”

Baton Rouge
Attentive service is assured because staff serve all tables and are attentive to the needs of all patrons without being intrusive - a testament to excellent training.

More importantly the quality of the food is A-0ne. While renowned for the succulent ribs, all of the wonderful meat and seafood courses are cooked to the diner's preference and the sides are substantial, so be prepared to take away left overs.

Very nice wine list.

“Enjoyable night out”

East Side Mario's
The trivia and variety of screens for sports fans should appeal to those who are looking to be diverted while they dine. However, the lack of seating in the bar area is a drawback.

Discounted starters between 4:00 and 6:00 are a great bargain. The fresh baked bread is also a hit. Prices are reasonable and the calamari al diavolo is highly recommended.

The staff are young and enthusiastic.

“Great Menu”

Royal Thai Restaurant
The choices on this menu will please a wide range of palates from those with a more conservative taste to those who enjoy exotic spices and uncommon fare. During my last visit I was accompanied by a number of south Asian friends who guided me on a novel gastronomic tour. Staff was helpful and the meal unfolded at a pleasant pace.

Located near the Market area of Ottawa, this is an excellent spot for tourists who can walk to a variety of downtown attractions.
