“Seafood at its best”

Nautical Nellies Steak & Seafood House
Whenever I visit Victoria, which is fairly often, maybe once per year, a stop to Nautical Nellies is a must! They are the epitome of West Coast cuisine, offering some incredible selections on their menu. You can't resist their oysters, and they have oyster happy hours and specials all the time. Another favourite of mine is the oyster shooter, which is a shot of vodka and a little bit of Clamato juice, you drop an oyster in and down it goes! Great local beer selection as well. This is a favourite restaurant of mine, Canada-wide!

“Terrific boating lessons!”

Cooper Boating
Two years ago I took sailing lessons through Cooper Boating with some family members. It was a wonderful experience and I've hoped to return for Level 2 ever since, but haven't had the opportunity. It works like this: you get a boat and an instructor, and you bring your own sleeping / living gear like sleeping bags, clothes, sailing shoes, bathing suit, etc. They provide the food, however. Vegetables, breads, soups, meats, etc. It's all paid for through your lesson prices. You pack up the boat and sail off, going from port to port along the George Strait and learning the lessons throughout the day. There's a practical exam at the end of the trip where you demonstrate certain abilities, including knot tying, and a written exam as well. With the completion of your test you'll be certified to sail a boat up to the length of the boat you learned on. It was a terrific learning and LIVING experience!

“The best coffee anywhere!”

Starbucks Coffee Company Ltd
Even if I'm headed out somewhere else for breakfast, I will always stop at a Starbucks for coffee on the way home. They make really good drip coffee, and their espresso drinks are world famous. Today I will be getting a venti (large) Pumpkin Spice latte which is a seasonal drink this fall. Delicious!!

“Cheap Diner Feel”

Phil's Restaurants Ltd
Phil's restaurant is in line with Smitty's or Denny's for the type of atmosphere and quality of food. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but giving an expectation of what it's like. The feeling of being in here for coffee and pancakes in the morning (and they make good pancakes) is very welcoming. It's an affordable restaurant that's really good for families, because they have a kids menu with smaller portions and a fun activity menu for them too. I think this is where I'll go this morning! :)

“Really Delicious Breakfast!”

Nellie's Kitchen
Nellie's is a chain of breakfast restaurants in Calgary, and one that I wish they had in Edmonton too (where my first home is). They make home-made tasting food, and have all the regular breakfast fare and then some! Eggs, bacon and toast, but also pancakes, sandwiches, and some other organic or veggie inspired dishes. The 17th ave location is a really popular one, so expect to wait especially in the morning on a weekend.

“Tough Location”

Nellie's On 4th
Nellie's makes great home-made food for breakfast, like eggs and bacon, eggs benedict, etc. Anything you can think of for breakfast, and they're vegetarian friendly from what I can tell. I say this is a tough location because it's kind of downtown, in the Beltline I suppose, so trying to find parking in the morning can be an annoyance.

“Another Location, Please!”

Dutch Pancake House
The Dutch Pancake House is the absolute best place to get pancakes, but the only problem is that there aren't enough locations. If you don't live in the south west, to get down here for breakfast can be quite the trip. They offer lots of fresh fruit on their pancakes, as well as your typical breakfast sides like whole wheat toast and juices. It's the pancake recipe itself that makes this restaurant irresistible!

“A massive winery!”

Mission Hill Family Estate
This is not a vineyard, this is a wine complex! The Mission Hill Family Estate produces dozens of different wines each year, and must make thousands upon thousands of bottles. As you're no doubt aware, they can be found all over Canada. If you are in this region, no matter what time of year, you must stop in for a tour. Compared to some of the other wineries, if you visit them as well, this will blow you away. Enjoy lunch in their restaurant if you want, it's a real treat. I wish I could explain this better, but it must be seen personally.

“stunning red wines”

Blasted Church Vineyards
Blasted Church wines are known for their zany labels, illustrated by someone whose name I can't recall, but in a very recognizable style. Let that not deter you from the wines themselves, which are quite delicious. They focus on red as far as I know, and that's mostly what I tasted myself. They're quite good and can be found at many liquor stores, so keep your eyes open.

“great dessert wine”

Little Straw Vineyards
If you are lucky enough to be at this winery in the mid Fall or later, after the harvest when they are going after the late harvest, then you may be able to taste their recent dessert wine. They use late harvested grapes for white dessert wines, which have endured at least one frost, and they are just magnificent. I had to leave with a couple of bottles after our tasting.

“dingy”

Twice the Fun Billiards & Awards
My daughter thought it might be fun to shoot some pool one night after dinner, while we were strolling around town. This wasn't a good idea in retrospect, we left here as fast as possible. Dingy inside and odd clientelle. It was a cool place that offered pool and darts, so I'm sure someone would like it, but think if you fit the bill first.

“magnificent fruit wines”

Elephant Island Orchard Wines
Elephant Island is known only for their fruit-based wines, made from the likes of apples, raspberry, apricot, black currant, etc. The list goes on, each one as good as the last. There's no stopping either, the selections seem to change each year. If you come here for a tasting, expect to leave with an armful of bottles - if you can get any! They sell out every year.

“some beautiful white wines”

Kettle Valley Winery Ltd
It's difficult to remember tastings on the Naramata Bench, because there are so many vineyards within earshot of each other, but Kettle Valley stands out. I remember the atmosphere of their winery, the history behind the name and how they make their wines, and of course the delicious selections they have. A few different varietals, all wondefully balanced, and they offer free tastings. Check them out.

“Best tasting experience of my life”

Marichel Winery
Yes, that is a bold statement. I was here for the Autumn Wine Festival in 2008 and had a wonderful experience with the two owners, whose names have sadly left me. They are a husband and wife team and they make the most incredible Syrah you've had, especially when you compare what they're up against in this region - so many white wines! It's bold of them to offer something so different. Back to the tasting, they were the most accommodating people I've ever met, I felt like I was a guest in their home. A full 45 minutes they spent with our family alone, giving a tour of the vineyard, history on themselves and the wine they make, and we must have finished 4 bottles together in that time, which was a bit unreal. There were 8 of us, mind you, but such generosity! If you have a chance, phone this winery ahead of time and ask if you can stop in. They will treat you like family.

“Spend an afternoon on the tour!”

Sun-Rype Products Ltd
Forgive the multiple reviews on this, if you've found the same search results on this website as I have. I can't seem to verify which of the addresses is correct, so you'll want to double-check this address yourself. On with the tour ... that's exactly what you can do here, go on a tour! Everyone knows Sun Rype and certainly buys their juices on occasion, so it's great to see how it's all made. Kids will have a great time here, it's dirt cheap, and it's not a short tour either so it will really captivate you. I really really recommend this for readers with children, small or even teens.

“Wow, Hophead!”

Tree Brewing
If you like a hoppy beer, like a pale ale, then get your hands on some Hophead from Tree Brewing. You'll be stunned, it's a terrific beer that's gaining recognition. The brewery here actually isn't much to see, we were hoping for a tour but they just had a tasting room at the front. I don't recall, but maybe it just had to do with the time we arrived. Either way, the tasting was good and they had brew that wasn't on sale at the moment because it's seasonal. They keep it around just for tastings.

“A treat!”

Okanagan Spring Brewery
This is a fairly small brewery, but they do offer a quick tour that will fill part of your afternoon if you're in the neighbourhood. Their most famous beer is 1516, which is a crisp beer I just love to enjoy in the summer. It was a pleasure to see how it's made, though I wish they had some sort of collector's bottles you could buy here to remember the visit.

“Stunning!”

Paradise Canyon Golf Resort
The view on this course from some holes, it's just magnificent. You can look out across the Old Man River (right?) and see the hoodoos, especially on one hole where they have you shooting down 200ft or more, on a 100yd distance, so it's like target practice. I came 1" away from getting a hole in one, the closest in my life. Such a terrific course, I could get a membership here and play forever.
