“Friendly people, attractive prices”

Red Cat Records
I checked online as well as vinyl record stores in Vancouver. Red Cat Records has vinyl record covers (inner and outer sleeve) that are better (thicker) than the industry standard at an attractive price. I’ve purchased hundreds from them. They also sell the popular Spin Clean Vinyl Record Cleaner and accessories such as rollers and cleaning fluid.

These are friendly and helpful people.

“Home Theater and traditional stereo hifi”

Commercial Electronics Ltd
Selling stereo hi-fi was a booming business in the past and now home theater is more popular. Commercial Electronics was one of the premier high end shops in Vancouver and now offers better quality home theater than big box stores. Bang and Olufsen is a prestige Danish lineup of TV's and home theater equipment that will also please the design conscious buyer. Other brands are Marantz and NAD amplifiers and receivers. Loudspeakers are the European Elac and French Focal, the Canadian PSB and the American Boston Acoustics and Martin Logan. The turntable is the prestigious Swiss Thorens starting at $500 and up. This is the store to LISTEN to components and home theater equipment. And there are sometimes good prices on clearance items. The sales people are low key and polite.

“Shop around”

Hillcrest Plumbing & Heating
Hillcrest Plumbing Discount Centre on 212 17th Avenue, Vancouver is a different company from the Hillcrest Plumbing on Main Street around the corner. Service is okay, but appears to be a smaller company than the Main Street competition.

“Most friendly and helpful”

Dunbar Lumber Supply
Dunbar Lumber is for the professional as well as the do-it-yourself handyman. The sales people are cheerful amongst themselves as well as to the customers. I have been shopping here for over a decade for supplies such as drill bits, screws, caulking, electrical switches, lumber and so forth. These are not cheap but quality products at a reasonable price. Don’t be fooled by the small size of the store on the outside. There is packed within an amazing amount. There is parking on the property which makes loading lumber convenient.

“One of the last high end stores”

Hi-Fi Centre
Just a heads up that Hi-fi Centre is moving to 433 Carrall Street in the heart of Vancouver Chinatown in the fall of 2014. See their website. The store is one of the last of its kind, a retail outlet of high end stereo and home theatre components that can be auditioned in dedicated sound rooms. They sell turntables with exotic tone arms and I bought a Rega turntable belt from them. All the sales people are knowledgeable with technical and personal experience. Although the store is not set up for browsing, such as in a big box store, lower price systems (still expensive for the average person) are offered and gladly demonstrated.

“Shopped here for decades”

Kerrisdale Lumber is practically an institution in Kerrisdale. The staff are knowledgeable and courteous in a first class operation. They sell lumber, hardware, paint, home decor items and perhaps the best selection of barbeque cookers in town.

“First choice for electronic parts”

Lee's Electronic Components (2005) Ltd
I've been shopping here for years for electronic parts such as HDMI cable, capacitors, contact cleaner and all sorts of connectors. The staff are bilingual and eager to help the customer. The prices are lower than most and the people are honest. They will be opening an additional larger store on 25th Avenue and Fraser Street, Vancouver.

“Sharpening blades as an art”

Sharpening House
My lawn mower edge was not only sharpened like a knife, but the entire blade was cleaned up to the extent I could read the fine print in the metal.

“Best Vintage Hi-fi and Vinyl Records”

Lotusland Buy & Sell
Weblocal.ca Location Lotusland Buy and Sell specializes in used vintage hi fi equipment as far back as the 50's and 60's. They have the largest and best selection of turntables, particularly Thorens and Dual. Other hi-fi equipment are preamps, amplifiers, receivers, cd players, tuners, tone arms, phono cartridges, tape machines and professional sound equipment. All components are cleaned and are in working order.

There is a high quality selection of used vinyl lp records in jazz, blues and classic rock.

Prices are lower than at audio salons and many record shops. The owner and his partner are hi-fi enthusiasts, glad to answer questions and will not pressure you. The store is located on Alma and 10th Avenue West in a safe part of Vancouver.

“Upscale classic lights with service galore”

Light The Store
I've been going to this store for 2 decades when they were on Broadway, then on Cambie and now in Kerrisdale. Quality and taste is far better than the big box retailers such as Home Depot and Canadian Tire.

Anybody wanting classic design and superior quality will find something within their budget. And the well-heeled will be pleased.

Before and after sales service is amazing. They are low key, courteous and literally know lights inside and out. Give them a try!

This is an update to above review.
In July, 2011 I purchase 2 lamps from Light the Store. I know basic electrical wiring but puzzled over the ceiling wiring. I phoned Light the Store from Victoria, BC and Dave told me what to look for. Clear in his directions I put the light in myself. Great service.

“Straight Ahead Excellent”

Artel Ironworks Ltd
Paul made me feel like a big client. He shortened the legs to my tubular metal bar stool. He fine tuned the cut with a portable grinder so that the legs were standing even. You have to have a fine eye for that. And when the edges were smoothed, he gave me directions to where I could buy caps for the legs. The rates are reasonable. You are not paying for the frills, just straight ahead excellent work.
