"Bluegrass plus beer" and an "amazing room for live music" make this Ossington basement saloon a "well-known secret" that draws in "interesting characters" with its popular roots bands; patrons perch on barrel stools lining the chicken wire–topped bar, and Sunday's popular bluegrass brunch is "one of the best hangover cures in Toronto."
This basement honky-tonk has quickly turned into a mecca for roots, bluegrass, and country rock in Toronto. High-profile singer/songwriters like Ron Sexsmith (a local resident), Serena Ryder, and John Doe (of X) have graced the small stage under the disco ball. Excellent Mexican and Southern-accented food is on offer, and the bar stools fashioned from wine barrels are a fun touch that pay... more
There’s something that differentiates The Dakota from other trendsetting bars on gentrified Ossington. Maybe it's the gun as the door handle. Maybe it's the fact that the live music here is bluegrass and country rock without the Billy Ray Cyrus kitsch. Whatever, it is, it's attracting groups of students, older male country fans and the curious bystander to break out the plaid and enjoy the... more
I have yet to go to Bluegrass brunch and am hoping to edit my review to a 5 after I do.

Came here for their Saturday morning Bluegrass brunch special and was pleasantly surprised. All you can eat breakfast with a live bluegrass band playing was fun. The food was nothing original, your basic breakfast fare but it made it up in droves with the atmosphere.
I went here for the firs time to see a small show and had a great night out. It was very busy, but it was a friday night, so it's to be expected. The prices are on par for the area and venue, as was the crowd.
The only downside was that there was a decent wait for drinks. Maybe more staff would help? It could also have been that specific night though.
Overall, i def go again.
Rustic basement bar, serving Southern-style pub fare, where roots acts hit the small stage nightly.
This Ossington basement saloon was one of the first spots to put the ‘hood on the map, reeling in country and southern rock crowds from the get-go. It’s become a standard music venue for those in the roots scene, and is not only one of the most photogenic bars in Toronto (all bands love to get their photo taken on the Dakota’s stage), singer Serena Ryder even used a mock mural of it as the... more
